I was wondering the same thing. I'm using some Redline racing cranks and was wondering if the smaller cranks make pedaling completely silly. My cranks are 180mmsprocket is 44tfreewheel 16tMy feet clip the rear pegs sometimes and during rear wheel tricks when my cranks spin around I have to be careful the pedals don't tag me on the pegs. It seems like most cranks are 145mm or so and that just sounds waaaay too small to me considering I also use this bike as transportation. If I did swap out for smaller cranks I'd really need to ditch the 44 tooth dinner plate as well. What's the smallest sprocket that still is a good gear ratio to be used with a 16t rear? I can't go too small with the sprocket since my rear brakes are on the chainstay.
I have 145mm cranks and they are fine for flat. If you ride other styles, longer ones may be more preferable. Also keep in mind that the frame you are using may determine if you want shorter cranks. On a frame with short chainstays like the Tantra, 145s are great as you do not hit the back pegs as much. With a 11/24 ratio, you shouldn't have much trouble riding out with the less leverage of the shorter cranks.
Yeah I do wanna switch to a freecoaster at some point but it's a money issue really. I'd be spending money on the freecoaster hub, then I'd have to pay someone to lace it to my wheel, then I have to get the smaller cranks and the smaller sprocket and the newer chain to fit these parts. I figure I'd start with the cranks and work from there. I think I'll try to find something 165mm. That should be good. I don't think I'll switch the sprocket until I get rid of the freewheel.
