1 pound frame if not less!
« on: September 16, 2008, 03:06:21 AM »
OK so now that I have your attention how about this for a light frame.  It's sort of an experiment, but what if it really works?  You take a frame that would normally be done the manufacturing process, but instead of leaving it as it, you seal the tubes so they all link together, and at some point out of the way you have a valve like on your tubes.  You then proceed to fill said frame with helium and viola, maybe a 4 pound frame could weight 1 pound?!?!?! ;D
If riding you stop, die you will.  It's not how hard the tricks are, it's how you make them look that counts.

if the frame cracked and somehow caused a spark, it would be pretty fun to watch! ^_^

sparked an idea though....structural foam.

they use it to stiffen auto chasis to avoid going to the extent of installing a rollcage.

pour it in, let it expand and harden, get rid of excess.

i dont know how much it expands and thus the final weight when fully cured though.

helium HAS a weight, it only floats upwards because it's lighter than air - its just like when you mix oil with water, the oil will eventually float to the surface, because it's less dense (i.e. "lighter")

coming back to the frame/tube idea, yes, you COULD link them all up, seal up the holes, and withdraw all the air so it's a vacuum. nothing weights nothing. apart from the valve that you'd need to put on after sucking all the air out, which i'd imagine to outweight the negligible weight you lose from sucking the air out the frame.

on the other hand, structural foam's been mentioned by some other people in another board a while back and it's an interesting idea, i have no idea how good would it work though.. be it off the shelf or custom made to purpose, but for either to be continually effective in weight saving and structurally enhancing, the tubings of the frame'd become worryingly thin..

helium is used in some sort of skateboarding company that i cant remember....but yes they eject helium..and vacume out the air at the exact same time...and there are other alternatives to metals besides what we have tried the last ten years...only time will tell if something new comes out...and works?

look at what superlight mountainbike frames are made out of, and make a flat frame out of that. The aluminum that they're made of is pretty much as thin as a popcan. Probably just as weak in some parts.

As an example, existing insulated gas tanks capable of holding liquid
helium in liquid form have a dead weight about equal to that of the liquid
helium contained therein. A pound of liquid helium when vaporized is
capable of lifting 6.2 pounds of weight. Accordingly, by subtracting the
dead weight of the helium, one pound of liquid helium provides an ideal
ballast increase of 7.2 pounds.
