there is no better or worse every thing youll do with your bike will be personal preference/modification.

i ride brakless but i never really used them only for stopping and stopping from rolling back on tailwhips. i do like brakes i must admit but theres so much hastle with rims, brakepads, having the cables out of the way, fixing them and even having a puncher sucks having to take the pads out. there is alot off work for brakes and i just wanted to have a simple bike so i went just with the front and never really used it so i went brakless

back brakes for a few tricks
and you can learn them brakeless
all balls no brakes
lol
as chase would say.

choose your set-up because you are comfortable with it, not because everyone else is doing it.  That said, it run no brakes since I was inspired by York.  I think I might put fronts on though

How do i make my diatech hombre brakes better? Do i take off the rear brake?

I mean, how i make my front brakes better, and often flatlanders has only front brake, and i dont use very much rear brake, so do i take it off?

the new schol riders or new riders tend
to go brakeless or go with no brakes in the back. that is
fine up to a point as you can learn some tricks brakeless
and no back brakes but the basics and tricks you need to
linkt other tricks together..you need to have both brakes
to feather etc...... brakeless riders and riders with no back
brake but just front brakes tend to get to a point and then
cant progress any further. this is why you see the same
trick over and over again in videos or same type of linkts
being done over and over again. the only rider who really
can go brakeless is chase gouin and he can continue to
progress ta breaking speed.

i think myself that kev is right in this and flatland has gotten
pretty stupid with this brakeless thing and no back brakes
and i have gone back to a full on brake thing to progress.

kevin jones is the father of flatland
and really knows what he is talking about
and i agree with him and like someone else said
seeing the same old linkt or thing done in videos
is getting old for me too.

i wished more new school and new riders go back
to the setup flatland was suppose to be in
front and back brakes where you progress
past a point and not get stuck doing the same old thing
in tricks and linkts.

i know what you mean. but for me i never progressed with brakes cos i could never set them up the way i wanted to and was some much hard work for me. i spending a whole day setting up the brakes and then i would get a puncher and and to take pads or or even lossen the cables to ge the wheel off. i ride brakeless and yes i do agree that tricks are all the same with hitch hickers and halfpackers and steam rollers. it will change soon enough though, with the new genoration of riders comming out

but your blind to the point
THE NEW RIDERS DONT PROGRESS PAST THAT POINT
BECAUSE THEY CANT FEATHER OR  DO ANYTHING
IN LINKTS THAT BRAKE BIKE RIDERS CAN..YOUR ONE
OF THOSE STUPID ARSE NEW AGE RIDERS WHO DONT
SEE AND THAT IS SCARY IN THAT FLATLAND HAS GOTTEN SO
STUPID! THERE WONT BE ANY NEW STYLE OR LINKTS AND
THE NEW LINKTS WILL BE RIDERS WHO CONTINUE TO
PROGRESS WITH BOTH BRAKES UNLESS YOUR NAME IS
CHASE GOUIN BUT THAT IS ANOTHER MATTER!

HAVE YOU EVER TRIED TAKING ONLY ONE SIDE OF YOUR
BRAKE PAD OFF TO GET YOUR WHEEL OFF AND THAT IS
WHAT I USUAULLY DO TO NOT SCREW UP MY BRAKE SETUP
AND UNLESS YOU  ARE NOT GOOD AT ALL WITH BRAKES
THEN THEY ARE NOT THAT HARD TO DIAL IN...THAT IS JUST
AN EXCUSE TO NOT HAVE BRAKES!

geez i was only asking
Title: Re: brakes
Post by: Beail on May 15, 2006, 10:03:39 AM
i run a front brake and the reason i dont run a rear is cos i cant be f'd with gyros, cable routing to the back blah blah..  never really used it anyways!

anyways its a personal choice, ride with what feels more comfortable for you..
Title: Re: brakes
Post by: mutt on May 15, 2006, 07:04:17 PM
true beal
but it is also a matter of progression too
this is not about choice really as maybe choosing
the right frame, parts or whatever
this is totally different in it affects your progression
point and that i think is where the young riders dont get it.
they need to see that you can progress past a point
if you dont have front and back brakes as alot of the
basics and tricks needed to linkt other tricks then you
need back and front brakes on alot of them.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT FRAME, WHEELS ETC IS A RIDERS
CHOICE AND PERSONAL PREFERENCE BUT IT IS WAY WAY
DIFFERENT IN HOW ONES PROGRESSION IS AFFECTED
BY NOT HAVING FRONT AND BACK BRAKES...THAT IS
THE POINT IM TRYING TO MAKE.

hold on. have you ever seen me ride? sorry to say but im dysleic and im dysprasic and i find this sport very hard aswell as setting up a brake. my bike is simple for me to fix. i know how to fix a brake but have you ever tried to move one hand and the other moves? im been riding flatland for this year 7 years or maybe 6 i forget. any how...
i do progress but im not in it for the progression. im in it to enjoy myself, have quite times in the carpark to ride and think. to do one of the hardest things on a bike and is even harder for me than you. you maybe old than me and know people like jesse blah blah. but does it really matter? to me i dont want to progess like everyone else im here to have fun and ride a bike the way i choose. and leavers really hurt too. people like different set ups and all have different opinions. i respect your set up and if you want  brakes go for it. but in the end you cant say blah blah blah when people already thought about what your saying. if new people join our wonderful art let them. if they wear tight trousers or ride brakless there are still flatlanders and are weclome cos they are keeping flatland going. so think what you say. and be nice and no shouting

LOOK GOOGLES
I AM JUST SAYING THAT I AM SEEING THE SAME OLD
LINKTS AND TRICKS BY PEOPLE ON VIDEOS
AND I AM NOT SAYING ALL PEOPLE SHOULD
HAVE BOTH FRONT AND BACK BRAKES
BUT ATLEAST HAVE BOTH BRAKES FOR AWHILE SO YOU
CAN LEARN THE BASICS OR STUFF TO LINKT THINGS
AND NOT JUMP STRAIGHT INTO THE HARD SHIOOT
LIKE MANY OF THE NEW AGE RIDERS ARE
THATS STUPID

THAT IS ALL IM SAYING GOOGLES
SO GET OFF MY BACK ABOUT IT
IM ONLY SAYING WHAT KEVIN JONES IS SAYING
AND OTHERS TOO.
AND YES I KNOW THOSE RIDERS AND SO WHAT??
I BEEN AROUND MANY MANY YEARS
IN A GALAXY FAR FAR...
NEVERMIND
YOU GET THE IDEA!
Title: Re: brakes

come on now kids calm down  ^_^

rite!!!!

it IS personal choice..

Mutt i can see your perspective but hav you ever heard 'where theres a will theres a way' ok u limit yourself to tricks by not running brakes or make them harder but that only opens up the ideas of new tricks or ways around not using a break in ones that do need them..

its like in life everyone makes there own choice! people should respect that choice and if that person realises later that they'd made a mistake then respect the fact that they'll learn by it..

what im sayn is all riders should have support of each other, irrelivant of there setup/tricklist/gender/race/creed/whatever
Title: Re: brakes
Post by: mutt on May 17, 2006, 07:47:39 PM
but this is not about will or way
this is about stupidityof flatland
at this moment and that is something
we must deal with as the new riders are the future
and they are being really stupid in limiting their tricks
and linkts they are doing

that is my point
Title: Re: brakes

mutt i know exactly what you mean but altho the human race is massively diverse many unfortunately follow suite..

Just remember those who stand out are those that stand for themselves..

go out ride, and do it for yourself, not for what people think of it but for some meaning relevant to you. im certain you'll gain much more recognition for it.. then people will aspire to that and the cycle starts again!

Beail is right
if someone whant to ride brakeless thats his why flatland is not only for doing the same stuf is for creativity you create your oun ridin you create new trick is your mind you cand create other links if you put your mind to it just think and create

riding with or without brakes is all about what you want out of flatland.

Some people want to look cool. Others want to learn it all, and progress.

Brakeless is way harder so of course you look cooler without brakes.

If you want to progress at flatland, and learn all the tricks out there, brakes will help you out. (so will locking levers, but that is another story, I still do no handed, bar spin, miami hop hops, but I had to find 15 year old levers to do 'em).

Dialing in brakes is a job. I learned how, and it is very easy for me now (less than 5 minutes total per brake). I even built a bike for Kevin Jones bitd, and he said I did it perfect, he wouldn't change anything. Probably the best complement I ever got.

I didn't learn how to do that overnight, it took years of tearing them down to find out how to make them work perfect.

But, I didn't learn flat overnight either. That too took years and years to get to the Pro level.

I know Chase, he started the brakeless movement, (I was there when he started it).

He now has a bike with brakes and without.

It will be cool to see what kind of stuff he starts doing now with brakes.

I ride with brakes, and since I started riding again I have only fallen on the ground 1 time.

(I have a pic of me wrecking, click the link if you wanna laugh)
http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/glennwmiii/detail?.dir=1c38&.dnm=3aaare2.jpg&.src=ph

With brakes you can save yourself, without you crash more.

So, riders that know how to use brakes (feather, lock, ect) have an advantage over riders that don't. They have a smoother style and will touch the ground less in general.

gm

been there, done that.

gm
geoff martin??
i hope that is not this long haired freak
of a plywood hood who use to spin like a mother
lol
anyways yeah i got  to say flatlland is not for
looking cool and it is for progressing and having
fun and i think alot of new riders have lost that
idea of what flatland is
that is al im trying to say.

Flatland is all things to all people, and we MUST continue to allow that.
Even if it means allowing people to argue the toss about things, mutt is just as entitled to say it's all about progression as gm is to say it's about the fly miami hoppers, or anything else anyone says............

BUT PEOPLE.......please keep things civil, nothing in a free style should be criticized or labelled stupid or you take away its freedom, that's the same freedom that we get to exercise in our speech and I urge you to think of how passionate we all are on here about that!! If we use abusive words to bind people's expression we bind our FREE STYLE .

If you want to stay free on this forum speak freely in a none abusive none limiting way........hope I make some sense here I have had the worst month at work.

Play nice homies.....outie
