Title: 2020 Deco Jackpot v4
Post by: mal on March 25, 2020, 04:42:48 PM
This is my first new bike since i stopped flatland almost 20 years ago.Never thought that this would happen but I am now back to flatland in a full swing, and even got better than i was!

I got back to flat using my last bike,a Big Daddy that now felt heavy as f@ck and the parts were failing one by one.I then made the decision to build a new bike to help my riding.

And it did big time.I still can't believe how light modern parts are.On the first days it was like riding without a bike, like it was a fake cardboard bike or something! It took me over a month to re-train my body to use less force for moving the frame around during tricks.

Anyway,
parts list:

frame : Deco Jackpot v4 2020 18.9"
fork : Heresy Descend 0/15
bars : St.Martin BackToFlatland bars 8" remade by PiR
stem : Arcane 45mm
rims : SunRingle Envy
fc hub : KHE Greyhound adjustable 14mm
front hub : Mission Radar
seat : Infinity flatland pivotal
seatpost : Cinema stealth pivotal
levers : Odyssey Monolever
detangler : Shadow Sano v2
brake front : Diatech Magic
brake back : KHE Spring Hanger
detangler cables  : Odyssey Gyro G3
front cable : Odyssey Slic
tubes : KHE Twiggy
sprocket : KHE spline drive 25t
cranks : KHE MVP 170mm
grips : ODI Longnecks
pedals : Heresy Arrows
bb : Deco spanish 19
hs : Deco
chain : Cult 410
pegs : Salt Plus Echo w/ griptape
tires : Ares A-Class 1.9 regular
bar ends : Odyssey ParEnds

I powder coated the frame, fork, stem, cranks, handlebars and spray painted/varnish the freecoaster as soon as i bought them. These were not the factory colors.

Little mods here and there like cutting some fork, compression bolt, seat bolt, seatpost, upper gyro cable length etc

Weight : 10.8 kg

Hi mal, that bike really looks nice! First I thought the red stem doesn't fit, but now I think it gives that extra special touch.
Really cool that you have a PiR bar now as we discussed in the other thread!I think 10.8 kg is good. Much less and it gets nervous for me. Did you get used to the weight?
How did you make your Greyhound freecoaster black?

Hey Daddy,i wanted something really cheerful as i get motivated by colors, but also something that doesn't look like a matched colors complete bike,so since yellow was the color i would use,it made sense to me to add a touch of red,but only for a part, just to break the strictly yellow/black combo.

I have to thank you for the recommendation on PiR !I am satisfied with the result! I had a really difficult time shopping for newschool but still midschool looking bars!

You are right about the weight,i don't know if i would have liked it lighter,it would feel weird. It still feels weird to me after a month (only had about 6-7 sessions so far because of work/weather/corona situation) and my muscle memory from the last bike still hasn't catch up,but i think in 1-2 months i will be ok with it!I had/have to re-learn all the balancing points, but this is really fast with the modern geometries and weight! Also i don't get tired easily when riding with this light bike,a 3 hour session feels like a 45min with the heavier midschool Big Daddy! Thats big!

About the paint job on the freecoaster (forgot to mention, corrected),thats the part that i didn't powder coat because i didn't want to disassemble it,it also came laced from 4pegs bxm store,i just sealed the space between the covers/bearings/shell really good with blu tack and the rest of the hub parts with paint tape, then spray painted some layers of paint and varnish.I didn't even sand it,since there will be no physical contact with the shell,as it is protected by the spokes and dropouts,i think its ok not being powdered. It doesn't chip or anything.

When things get a little easier i will be on the lookout for news bars so might have to get in touch with PiR.

Im not feeling the ultra generic street looking bars every rider has these days.

Me neither.

I also can't have 2 piece bars.

All my bmx bikes since i was a kid had 4 piece bars and in my head freestyle bmx is always associated with 4piece bars.Since the late 80s (at least in my circle) 2 piece bars were used mostly by racers,we,and all the other freestyle riders around us,all had 4 piece bars.

I know its a mind thing,if you hide the stem clamping area on any 2/4 piece bar you can't tell by the rest of the geometry if they are 2piece or 4piece,they are the same and act the same!

But still!

Hi mal,
"freestyle bmx is always associated with 4piece bars": I could not agree more! Since I first saw a Haro Kneesaver two piece bars were "race bars" for me... I have to "admit" that I have some on some of my "spare" bikes, but my main bike will never have one.
I spray painted some rear hubs in the past because because for anodising I would have needed to remove the steel insert. It worked more or less... For front hubs I preferred anodising but it does not fit the surface of a painted rear hub so well...
But it seems like you have the same feeling like I would have for your bike: A not black rear hub would not do it!

thanks,yes it turned out nice!

The one thing that needs some modding is the seat,as the back of it is made for giant hands i suppose, not comfortable for grabbing.
I am doing this mod today http://www.global-flat.com/smf/index.php?topic=22489.0

I like the Infinity Bikes seat and I got small hands...try using a few fingers and not
all the grooves when grabbing the seat and space your finger grip in the grooves..a
lot just use all of them and yeah it is comfortable to the point of doing that!

OSG called me a day after I gave him one of those seats and say that he had to just
adjust his fingers to using a few of the grooves when grabbing the back of the seat
for certain tricks.
