I have been thinking, who is the oldest flatlander?
By age or by riding years? Retired or still in active?
-
Mutt's the oldest I can think of offhand
-
Also, Dennis rode flatland way past 1989, I remember him still riding flat when he was sponsored by Mongoose
-
i am the oldest period
46 years old and been riding since 1989
off and on as i had some health issues.
but age wise i am the oldest for sure at 46 years old
and ill ride til im 70 years if i can and i dont think anyone
going to break that record.
lol
MUTTS LIVING HISTORY OF RIDING...UNOFFICIALLY
OFCOURSE!
1971-1975..schwinn days and i had a yellow schwinn
stingray i use to ride and jump off hills, curbs etc...look
for me in the joe kid on the stingray video!
1975-1986--raced bmx in ABA, NBL, USBMXA, UBR, NBMXA,
AND THE MANY OTHER SANCTIONS..SPONSORS INCLUDED
CO-FACTORY REDLINE, FACTORY JAG BMX AND BANDITO
RACING...#6 national amateur in 1979 in the ABA!
Rode some Sundays at Golden Gate Park with the
Curb Dogs..became very good friends with Vanderspek
and became a member of the Curb Dogs!
1986-1988---skated vert with the likes of Steve Caballero,
Tommy Guerrero and skated a bunch with Rodney Mullens
who lived in Oaklnad at the time.
1988-1991-met this fat ass kid on a pink gt pro team performer
named Gabe Weed and the rest is history as later i met
Andrew Arroyo, Joe Pioloski(sponsored by lifes a beach),
Eric Emerson. Pistol Pete Brandt, Aaron Dull, and many others
and ride at Golden Gate Park every Sunday!
WOULD LATER MEET Jesse Puente, Leo Dumloa, Nate Hanson,
Richard Z, Ron Mccoy, Sean Mckinney, Day Smith, Edgar
Placenta and his brother Ivan Placenta aka the Flatland Fugutives
and they would come up here to ride with us and we go down there
and we became the best of friends. Andrew Arroyo, Gabe Weed,
myself and Steve Nevias would become the Northern part of the
Flatland Fugitives. Our little group of 13 riders would get bigger with
Sean Peters, Dylan Worlsey and Phil Dolan becoming Flatland Fugutives.
THE JINX OR BAD OMEN OF THE FLATLAND FUGUTIVES?
Tragically Richard Z died in a car accident coming back for the York Jam
with Edgar being critically hurt and Ivan who was driving was also
hurt in the car crash. Jesse Puente was also involved in a serious
car crash later in which his car he was driving FLIPPED OVER SEVERAL
TIMES IN THE SAND DUNES AREA AND THEY ESCAPED SERIOUS HARM
BUT IT WAS A VERY BAD CRASH(read this in the Flatland Kings Book)
Mutt was sick with a brain tumour and almost died in 1995 and had a
5 hour operation but had a relasped that almost killed him with the
complete crash of his immune system and serious lung and respirtory
collasped system. Leo Dumloa also had some health issues and he is
now partly crippled on one side with serious nervous system problems
and can no longer ride flatland and walks with a cane!
Mutt did not ride flatland from 1996-2001 because of the tumour
and relasped and has been riding when his health is good since
tho recemtly he had another bad episode this week where he had
a bad lung/respirtory virus that had him throwing up blood and
ended up in the Hospital once again. He will always have this
poor lung/respirtory problem but wants to ride no matter what
and will when he can..hardcore rider!
-
good to know that some can still ride close to 50. Means i got 30 years ahead
-
yep
ill ride no matter what and when i can
i mean i been thru deaths door almost and know
that i want to ride and love to do so.
right now i still have this respirtory/lung
virus i am fighting and i cant ride still and hating it!
-
Conceptual Mutt.
46...going on 12, that is a compliment. Hope your lungs clear up completely.
There must be riders/Flatterss who rode before Mutt and during the late 60's...he can't be the oldest.
What was Flatland before it was coined as 'Flatland', does it go back to being called
'Artistic Cycling.' and who was the person(s) who developed this style of riding in BMX or has it come about by those exhibiting in such events as the circus/stunt riding during the 20's, 30's?
Neela
-
I remember way back in 88 there was this guy that was 32 and competed in the 18 and over novice class for flatland in the NBL...
He'd be 51 now...
I'm sure some guys here would remember him. He always wore a sweatsuit.
-
yeah i remember him
he does not ride anymore so yeah im still
the oldest rider stil out there riding and the
point is
STILL RIDING FLATLAND GUYS AND I AM THE OLDEST!
LOL
NOT THAT IT MATTERS AS I DONT GIVE A %$#$#$%#%^#
-
so... what age when u start flat uncle norcalmutt ;D
did u ride bmx before 1989 ?
Respect

too bad for you Mutt :)
-
Charlie Patterson in Lake Charles is 42 and is still an active rider.
How come they are no videos of Mutt riding?
-
what about the pioneers?
ron wilton
damn what about Mike Buff?
How old is RL?
-
Hahah Mutt got pwnd.
isnt Kevin Jones like older than yoda?
-
Whats Molintero doing these days?
-
I'll give it to Mutt because it's a great title for him. Kev and I are only 40.
-
I give the title to Mutt too, for not just riding at that age, but having such a long history connected to BMX. Congrats to the other dude also for riding at 55.
Mutt, thats one cool history, if someone makes another history of BMX dvd, you would be a good candidate to document.
-
well i dont know about this guy in Europe
riding and 55 beats me and it is better someone
is older than me but he has been riding for 4 years
but at 55 thats up there and i wonder how much
more yeah going to ride..im very young for my
age and i am actually like in my low 30s in body age
so this is why i am able to ride a long time except
the respirtory and lung problems i have.
i started bmx in 1971 and look at the history of MUTT
i put up and i started flatland in 1989 by the way so
yeah i been on my bike off and on for 36 years.
SCHWINN STINGRAY DAYS 1971-1975
BMX RACING DAYS 1975-1986
FLATLAND DAYS 1989-1995
2003-NOW OFF AND ON WHEN I AM NOT SICK!
36 YEARS OF BMX HISTORY FOR ME!!
-
The oldest active flatlander - thats ME,definitely.55 years old,started BMX 4 years ago,and I'm LOVIN it!!! ;D ;D ;D
Dude, you flat out rock!
I'm 34 and you sir are an inspiration to this 16 year old at heart.
-
I am 38 and as of Nov I will be 39. I still ride as much as I can. I saw my first BMX bike in 79 or 80 it was a Schwinn Mag Scrambler. I thought it was the coolest thing. My parents thought that even $80 was too much to pay for a bike. So I had to garbage pick and trade for BMX parts. I finally assembled a Schwinn Scrambler of my own. My friend Charlie's dad had a paint gun and made it look really nice. My Dad kicked in with a few parts for my birthday. 06/24/84 was my first race and the next day the bike was stolen by a creepy old man that followed me home from the trails while I went in the house to get some water.
I begged my parents to claim it on the Homeowners Insurance. They did after a lot of begging. The result was a Hutch Pro-Raider $239.00 (not the Pro Racer :( ). It had a front brake that I was going to take off until one of the locals jumped on it and did front wheel hops. I was hooked from that day on July 1984.

THE JINX OR BAD OMEN OF THE FLATLAND FUGUTIVES?
Did'nt Vanderspek hang himself?...........
-
Whats Molintero doing these days?
I had some good conversations with Moliterno at a party this past weekend. He is healing from 2 herniated discs and hasnt rode in a few months but is getting much better and will be back on the bike soon. He just signed a lease on a 10,000 sq ft warehouse where he is moving Standard Bykes to and starting his own factory. He is excited because its so big that he will have room to build some ramps plus some room to ride flatland. His girlfriend's parents live near flatlandfuel so they are in town often and flatlandfuel is in the midst of moving to a new place 5X larger than our current space and we are going to have 3000 sq ft of empty warehouse space just to ride in. So Rick is going to come by and ride when he is in town. On top of that Rick had a really nice prototype freecoaster on his bike this past weekend. I am sworn to secrecy on who made it but I am getting a sample from Rick this week to ride myself. But to get back on topic, Rick is 42 years old and can still kill it. Watching him ride a mini ramp is mind blowing. I was bummed he could not ride this past weekend. But he is inspriational because at his age he is still progressing a lot.
-
im 20, im old enough. As long as I dont break my knees again I'll hopefully be riding well into retirement ;D
-
probably that dude in the comic strip B.C. He can ride a wheel with pegs!!!
-
I'd say that both age and number of years riding flat should be a consideration. That shows dedication and longevity.
As it's been stated, I'm not really sure DMC rides flat anymore. Neither do most of the pre-late 80's old school riders that I know of. Haro, Wilton, Osborn etc. How old is Wilkerson? Does he ride any real flat, or just street these days?
I didn't know that Moliterno still rode flat. Nice to know. 42, and he was a factory rider from at least 86 I think (Hutch).
-
Well I'm 39. Just started riding again after of 20 years! Just waiting for a new KHE.
-
OG Marton Szilagyi just turned 37 this August, and he is in top shape, riding as hard as ever.
-
Wow, great list man.
What an awesome thread. Im 30 and getting back into it after a lengthy break.
Always loved flatland, always will.
-
I'd like to see a list of who has been riding flatland the longest without taking a break...
I'd bet Keith King (kilo) would be pretty high on that list... He started riding flat before me, if I remember right. And I don't think he ever took a break...
I would guess he's been riding Flatland for 24 years straight...
-
Mike Sarris is old... (I forget how old, but I would guess he is mid 40's...)
He invented the Miami Stopper, and a bunch of other balance moves.
He is in this video from 06.

I love this thread... makes me feel young!
Just turned 37 and been riding 20 1/2 years straight.

Mike was old back when I was a kid riding in the NBL. His coolest trick was the miami "stopper" which was a miami hopper but standing on the back pegs. You can see it in that video above (he met up with Keith at a show and brought his old school bike).

How old is Mike Sarris actually? Does he still ride?
18 and over class in 1990, that would make him at least 35 years old..
miami "stopper" - I never seen that before.. and he can still do it...
-
maurice still rides. He posts over on vintage often. In fact he just built up a sweet cruiser.
-
HA, The old nbl mag pix are too funny. Talk about the old days!

I had a GT Pro Freestyle Tour, with a chain ring on each side of the cranks.
Home made bash guard...so you would not bend your chain ring.
(that was back when a freestyler rode flat - street - ramps ) less lables!
See the picture above : elbow glide, white tires , big goofy ass bell helmet.
-
started riding freestyle/flat in 82 took a break in the 90s and started up again in 2000, what ever happened to Randy Tischman? I am 38 and still ride. I designed the Sickchild tee...........I ride when time allows. Keep rollin.....Todd W.
p.s. I thought it was called a miami hopper.

-
34 yrs. old
-
wow nice to see the list just when i thought i was getting old...haha...good to see theres still many years hopefully that i can keep riding...
hopefully when my arms and body have degenerated (this is like beyond old though - like 75 -80 years old...maybe more then that...who knows?) i still have my flatland abilities.
..no strength or effort required at all just raw mental technique to do tricks
just me sitting in my cave like an ascetic and riding mentally and then just doing the tricks perfectly after meditating on it for long enough...or atleast thats the dream..
..take care
keep riding
peace

Thanks for the Shout OUT H_Man !!!!!
I have made a deal with a few of my friends...HUCK and Cesar. They can't stop riding until I stop riding. I am not going to stop for about 30 more years.
I will be 70 in 30 more year and I think thats a good age to just hang out and watch and not try to bust out some moves. Even tough I bet I will still be able to bust a wheelie all the way down the street!!!!
At every comp I have been to in the past 3 years. I have always been the Oldest Rider to enter. Yeah I still ride begginer but I have learned alot in the past 4 year and I dont't plan on stopping my progression anytime soon.

woody and maurice are both still riding...
Woody has been riding in front of his house lately, and doing some ramps and stuff at the local skateparks with Alvin Mullins, who is around 42 I think, and was a famous old school pool rider way back in the day.
Wasn't Maurice was at Brian's back yard barbeque last month?

Looking at this there should be an ole farts Jam or comp. Why has no one done this?
-
I've been in the flatland game for a while.... I rode a nice penny-farthing up until the Depression came and I sold it for a carrot. when we went into WWII the rations on metal forced me to ride a bicycle of solid lead, which was tough, but I was a real trooper through it all. I still ride even through my arthritis, and I invented 9/10 of the tricks you youngsters take for granted.
-
DARN ARTHRITIS

Hi,guys,
I'm totally new to this site, and am the oldest active flatlander in my country, both in longevity, and in age.I am only 34, and have been riding since 1984,which is nothing compared to mutt,or kevin jones, but I hope to get there,I live in the Dominican Republic, and there are 3 other active riders from my generation.Nonetheless,it is the same thrill to do a backpacker to cross-footed hitchhiker than to do a cherry picker,at least that's what I think,Flatland is more of an attitude than a tech spec sheet, that should be left for golf players.Anyway,I am glad to join global flat, and want to say hi to pete brandt ,Chase Gouin and jesse puente for being living examples that age ain't nuttin' but a number!saludos tambien a fernando bayone en espana,y a sergio y borja, sus alumnos.(that was a shoutout in spanish to some kids I met in madrid last month, who were rockin'!).Peace.
-
sorry guys, what a jerk I am,(or dork, now that we're at it!(lol)),my name is Jose Polanco, and I live in Santo Domingo,Dominican Republic, been ridin'since 1984,and also ride vert and dirt sometimes.Big up to randy in p.r. for keeping the faith too!and to the mullaly and UND crews,Hollaaaa!

Wow, awesome man!
Thanks Shane.
Hey I didn't get to publicly congratulate you on your Battle victory, you are really tearing it up bud!!
-
I keep thinking it was Brian Scura that was like 30 or 31 back in the late 80's. I remember me and my 13yr old friends thought that was kinda strange, and now here I am 35 and having a hell of a good time and getting strange looks from kids ;D
I saw Scura at a demo in Houston. He would always do one of those forward flips on his bike, we always thought that was bad ass lol. I can't find any more info on him as far as age or if he's still riding. Seems he's still involved with bikes at least at the business end. Looks like he runs Scura Speed & Technology's (SST) making some bike parts. He's also credited as being the inventor of the gyro. Wonder if he still rides? Anyone know how old he is?

I don't know his age, but in 1985 he was riding in the 17 and older expert category... that would make him at least 42...
and check this quote:
At this event Brian Scura proved he's not too old

I'm pretty old now. I'm 45 and I've been riding BMX since around 1976. I had to give up the jumping side of things some years back. I've been riding flat since 83 or so. I had to take a year off once when I tore my knee up. Still riding.
Note to Out Riding : Bill Nitsschke is still a professional touring rider. He does between 200 and 300 shows a year. check out www.wonderwheelsbmx.com (http://www.wonderwheelsbmx.com)

I'm 39, turn 40 in April and I'm seriously riding better, progressing quicker and in better than shape than I've ever been, it's crazy. I'm loving it.

Hey Out Riding...
I will get you Julia's and Randall's last names. I forget off the top of my head. Also, John Yull, David Larocca and I are all "comeback" people. We haven't been riding the whole time.
And I sometimes ride with a guy named Gary First who is in his 50's. He started riding when he was in his late 30's but quit for awhile, and now has some interest in riding flat again. I'll get you his age too. He actually raced BMX, rode trails, street and flatland...all at the same time.
Thanks for adding all of this...it's encouragement to me, and I'm sure others. We never thought it possible to ride well into your 50's! Only time will tell how old we will be riding at!
-
my real name is chuck schroth.
-
Just spoke with Gary First...he is 55 years old. I stole a picture of him riding trails from his Facebook because he didn't have a flatland picture. I will get a picture of him riding flat soon...

I suppose I better get on the list. 39 in a month. Never really quit, quit but from 1998-2002 had enough major knee issues that I didn't ride very much.

Pulled this from you tube.
Josh Marsele (aka Axlepeg) stopped riding flatland from 1990-2008. He's recently logged about 25 hours back in the saddle and got some footage which I edited together with his direction. He's 36 years old and riding a 1983 Skyway TA race frame.
Axlepeg BMX Flatland Freestyle how to flobots handlebars (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNS7mfu2Hpo#)
might already be on the list not sure. but he is sick.
EDIT 2min and 35 seconds epic

Jake Umberger 37
riding flat since '86.
Never actually quit, but slowed down a ton from 2002 to 2004 (marriage) and 2005 to 2009 (divorce). Now riding full on and loving it.
Actually decided to pick it up more/again to quit smoking. Figured out that cigarettes replaced the rush I used to get from riding. Riding is cheaper and better for you.
Take that as a lesson kids! Don't smoke!

I'm not nearly the oldest, I turned 40 this past August. But I do ride, started in 1984-96, took time off from riding to start a family around 97-98. Got back into it early 2008 after checking out a few videos of Jesse Puente(former riding buddy) and Rad Dad. I purchased a used Mongoose from craigslist and slowly got back into riding. I now host an annual jam, and hope to grow it into a contest series at some point. I love riding, and hope to get my sons involved over the course of the next few years...Ride On!!!

Nice Ruedog! Welcome to Club 40!!

Hi there! My roots are in flatland, which I still practice a bit. I began in 1983, but "officially' in Dec. 85 with my first true freestyle bike (MT Racing Trickfox). Around 2003-04 i began getting much more involved with street and park riding, but still doing some old school flatland stuff here and there. Now, I'm 40, nursing a broken knee since March 2010, and looking forward to my comeback, which already has slowly begun with, ironically, flatland...
Mutt, Moncho and all other old schoolers rule!

I am 42. My Schwinn Scrambler was stolen in June, 1984. It was replaced with a Hutch Pro Raider. My parents did not believe in spending a lot of money on a childs bike. Turns out it had a front brake. The day I got it I took it for a ride and one of the local riders stopped me to look over my bike. I was embarrassed since all these guys rode P.K.s and GTs Red Lines and real Hutches I had a $200 knock of.
So he jumps on it and starts doing rock walks, front wheel hops back wheel hops and I was blown away. I mean it was only '84 so bikes really weren't designed for trick riding but I was hooked. By the following summer I had pegs and all I did was ride. I quit racing by '86
