Jason, REALLY nice line. Your jump looks so ridiculously smooth, not even close to touching your bars on the ground.
Duncan, sorry about the lack of music. I cut and paste files together in quicktime as my digicam captures in .mov. Last time I put music in, it only seemed to play on my copy of the file and not on the one on youtube (despite me uploading that file). Take it for what it is; really raw footage from an hour before it was uploaded.

awesome, guys! glad you liked. i tell ya, the best part -- i recently started riding again after about 15+ years away. i'm 30 now, and never pulled a triple hydrant when i was riding full-time as a kid. to think i'm learning new things now makes me so happy. and so does spreading the flatland joy! awesome, gang!

2.) how do u keep that squeaker goin for so long? i get at max 2 scuffs in before falling.

dude im on for like 30mins a day...i just came back from a 2hr session.... so is it bad asking questions? And u dont think i push myself to do my best? I push myself to try new approaches, new styles and foot work and placement and stuff. And also use all my energy in the tricks i "try" to do. I usually dont ask u questions so y are you so mad?

Look man I'm not mad. Don't get me wrong I understand the position you are in because at one point or another everyone was there. What you have to understand is that the basics are the hardest. It took me less time to learn all the tricks in the link that I posted than it did to learn decades. Wrap your mind around that for a minute.
f*cking tell yourself you WILL land the tricks you're working on or you arn't coming in. Push yourself until you can't move. It's the only way to move forward. Ground rules won't teach you that, that's all in the heart.

Hey gang, although this vid is nothing amazing, for me it is and I know you can all relate to this feeling. I got back into riding a few months back after about 15 years away; when I stopped riding (why?!) the smith decade was just coming out and I thought it was the coolest trick ever, more or less. But I was a puny kid and any kinda decade-type trick was too much for me.
Now, I started trying them the other night and came this close:

Like I say, nothing amazing, but surely you guys/gals can relate to how totally stoked I was to get this close to a trick that I've wanted to do for so long. It felt so good! Next time I'm out, I'm pulling this freaking thing.
Here's a few more vids. Hey, nothing incredible, but considering I get out for about 2 hours a week, I'm overjoyed at what I managed to re-learn. Man... nothing beats the thrill of riding! It's hard to say, since I've been riding flatland off and on for about 6 years I'd say, with a lot of long breaks since I was skiing pro at the time. But, honestly, the last year and a half have been my most serious, try and ride everyday times.
Riding in spots like a garage is weird for me. My style is lots of rolling and less scuffing, so I like to have ample room. I almost get this vertigo feeling in my garage with the flourescent lights and always going to the right. It's weird, but I ride a LOT better in the daylight. I have trouble riding at night too under lights, but that's prolly cause I don't do it enough to be used to it, like my garage.

Really nice video and riding. You got a lot of cool switches and you put them together well. I especially like the hang 5 - bike flip/tailwhip - halfpacker. I remember Dave McDaniel first doing them in a Flatland Manifesto video, and you, off the top of my head, the only other guy I've seen do it.

A few people have done them. Raph used to do them out of like.. triple brakeless whiplashes and nose wheelies. I've done a few of them but jesus christ that is a hard hard HARd trick.

TJ, that halfpacker pivot is stupidly hard to get man!! I've been trying it every session and only gotten one clean... But yeah my full link I was thinking had the half packer pivot to steam to turbine wheelchairs to halfpacker barflip out to spastic forkwheelie mc circle whip out.
But thats kinda like hiros stuff.. I have some other stuff I landed but didn't film... one of them being a pedal type boomerang over top tube to mc circle.. I'll try to film it one day!

I've hit it a bunch.. but it's really hit or miss for me. Some days I like playing around with halfpackers where the brake is on the outside.. so I'm forced to try it more often, but some days I just don't have it. I often have to kind of hop a bit because my feet are so damn big they get in the way. I wear a size 13 so pivoting tricks are next to impossible for me.
I spoke with shintaro misawa yeeeears ago at metro jam and asked him how he pivots so clean. He took off his shoe, handed it to me and said something like "eehh small feet" then I took off my shoe, handed it to him and he just started cracking up because my shoe was easily twice as big as his.

Well, I'm going to try get hold of some axle converters so that when the back pegs are on the axle won't slip.
And when they're on I'll be a backwheel rider for a couple of months. ;D I can't believe it's been over a year with no back pegs!

Hahaha, everyone was always on my case about the lack of music on my other videos. I had to convert file types multiple times to 'edit' this video.

The whole turbine thing isn't really my natural style (and I get dizzy quick). I did try a flip to wheelchair turbine before (didn't go too well), and I've been thinking of the step to halfpacker mid turbine thing, so we'll see where my riding goes in the near future.

Some nice riding. I've never been into street/park myself, but I can definitely appreciate the skills/balls involved. I saw the whiplash down the icy steps on MTBR. That's just crazy. Looks like you really do live in Alaska. We have 50 states, I personally don't know why anyone would choose that one. I HATE cold weather.

yeah - im a little slow with the opposite foot.
vince tried to teach me a trick "ankle death" is like whiplash with out taking off your foot.
hence the ankle death name. its eazier for me to just step on the top tube tho.
like I said up there ^ we were just messin around. that vid is not ment to be taken serious.
it was just fun in the hot FL sun!

I am extremely motivated to learn new stuff. it comes from me riding a skateboard 12+ years and already having dirt jumping skills from the mid 90's on a gt mach one. haha.
im working on a new variation of front peg g turn spining half lash / cyclone thats going to absolutely murder when I figure how to get the ride out dialed. - or be even crazier if I can link it up to back peg turbines/scuffs in tight circles out. would be ultra!
me - drew/emerge - and vince/heavenlygripingbeast all had a crazy session today 5 hours of riding hard. - in a covered parking garage to stay safe from the sun. was totaly awesome.
I also built up an "un bike" and was riding that thing all over today, one footed + double footed-one handed for balance. - I managed to take a nice carve on it, rolling foward circle, then scuff to backward circle - was so amazing to do that on un bike. its super sketch not having frame to balance you out. makes you dialed over the wheel for balance.

word up i'm about 90 pounds more then 220 but built real solid i like to call my self shootin size
i'm also 6'1 rick is sick rollin some of the hardest tricks in da book and make it look easy at 220

You have to drop your shoulder down which ever side you go. You will have to find the right angle in order to get it tight, takes some time. In order to scuff around, I go as tight into the circle as possible and wait for my tire to pivot, then I just feel when its right, I kick my foot around and give a good scuff, which should propel your momentum in the opposite way, and should keep you going. I hope that helps.

You mean make front wheel tricks more fun. I've found recently, that if I'm in a rut or lacking motivation, changing the seat height drastically, either up or down (down as of most recent), changes the feel of lots of tricks and motivates me to ride harder.
Jim, you gotta try some cliffhangers and let me know how it goes with that seat height!

word! I tried cliffhangers for the first time the other day, but it felt crazy with my seat like that. my butt's too big to fit in that gap :wub:

I think that eXcite always haven't destination "to participate in contests with Matthias riding style". I think it's just for increase his riding level. And then he can just generate his individual high-level riding style.

It looks really sad though. To go out of your way to ride like someone else is pretty bad. I understand using someone else as a stepping stone, but when your entire web edit consists of using someone elses style and tricks, it goes a few steps beyond simply using the tricks to move something else.

Haha, I have tried whips from pedals with a street bike. And from pegs it's definately easier! It's easier to whip and control your jump. But if you get the feeling, then it's no problem for both variations.
Uh, I can brag that I learned those quickly :D I landed few rolaids and whips after trying them for about 3 hours overall.

Whoppers are stupid easy without cranks. Without dragging out the scooter comparisons, I landed one on a razor scooter 3rd or 4th try. Part of the trick is being able to muscle the bike around. Without the weight.. well.. It's hardly the same.

razor scooter comparison is pretty stupid.
It is easier, but I suggest you try to land a whopper with both feet on the frame not on the pedals. That's the crankless problem..landing.

so lately iv reinstalled my front break so that i can do the 180 thing(the half rockwalk) and then try and go into it like waldemar fatkin.

i dont think you need a front brake for that if its what im thinking of, most street riders can do it and they almost never run a front brake. just sharply turn the wheel super fast while rolling and lean/hop to the direction you wanna go

Thanks, Tod. I've been working hard lately, that's for sure. Up until three nights ago, I'd only been out 7 times since I re-started again after a 15 year break.
Last night was my third in the parking garage and I could really notice my balance getting better. I sessioned hang fives for over an hour and made huge progress.

Thanks. That session, those two in the vid were the only two I tried that session. Besides the obligatory dork wheelie, the boomerang was the first trick i learned. With brakes. ALL the way around. If it ain't rough, it ain't me.

I hope so. What I noticed that I was doing wrong was when I came around on my fire hydrant, I was leaned way over to the left with my leg far out. Great if you want to carve it with a lot of speed, but not so great if you don't want the frame coming around to you at warp 9. Haha. When I slowed down and tightened up my fire hydrant, the whip part was much more manageable. Plus, I was more centered over the bike and balanced.

Yeah, bend your knees more and stop scuffing with the side of your foot. Try to hit the ball of your foot when doing spinning tricks.

it seem like fire hydrant are less manageable with the newer geo that bikes have now days. when i was mess around with fire hydrants ,i would spin 3/4 away around the bike than pull it up to spin the rear made it easier. cant do what your trying though , good luck

its cool TJ , ive known ive had this problem for a while . it just took watchin this vid to make me try to change. which is why i think its a good idea for anyone to get one of these cameras and analyze their riding. :beer:

I think that's exactly it. I'm holding on to a habit from riding 30 pound bikes with offset forks. The new bikes come around much quicker.

Can you do xhand steam?
In My oppinion it's important to know how to pump them properly too ...
You are almost there, i can see that you're only having problems with the xhand steam, the fire hydrant thing is OK...
Oh, and why don't you try turning hang5 to the right? It's easier if you do them with your left foot.

I'm getting better at the crosshanded steam but it's something that I'm working pretty hard on. Still not all that great at finding the balance point yet. It tends to get super tight and spinning too fast for me and I have to bail.
I've actually been trying to get the hang five to go to the right lately. Most of the time I'm happy to let it drift to the left because my main problem right now is getting into them and keeping 'em going.
Here's the 2.5 version of my video from a couple of nights later. I managed one really great hang five as well as pulled off a fire hydrant to funky chicken. On the funky chicken, you can really tell how the floor is slanted in my practice spot from right to left. When I'm going around it's downhill, uphill, downhill. uphill. Haha. It's not a really dramatic slant, but enough to make you have to adjust.
I'm not sure what that peg wheelie is called where you switch hands and grab the front peg, but that was the first time I'd tried it in a few sessions and I managed to spin one full circle before I lost my balance. Personal best on that one.

Thanks, ortho. This stuff is hard and unless you're one of those lucky buggers with immense natural ability there's no easy way to get to being a good rider other than constant bailing and repetition. Lather, rinse, repeat. ^_^

I last rode about 10 years ago but I sure wasn't doing hang fives or anything rolling like that. I was a pretty mediocre rider for the most part (steamrollers, funky chickens, decades, boomerangs...hell, I couldn't even peg wheelie!). So for all intents and purposes, I started out again in November, when I got my new bike. Had to relearn everything- especially because I don't run a back brake now. That was a bit of a shock to get used to. Haha.
And don't worry about using your brakes in a fire hydrant- at least not on the initial turn. I'll occasionally use it when I'm bringing the frame around to a side squeaker, but only if I really have to.

You may feel like you need to push the bike over, but that's working against you. Fight that urge and try to keep it vertical and you'll have more luck doing them.
I get into them from a firehydrant. Check out my 2.5 video just a few up- maybe it'll help you a bit. The less you brake and squeak, the easier they are. I find when I panic and grab the brake it screws it up every time.

Thanks, Maz. I've been fooling with the messiahs. Had my best crash with one of those and am SO mad the camera wasn't running. It was hilarious- I bailed, the bars got caught up in my feet and I went flipping into one of those white columns. ^_^

If you do it out of a firehydrant, it's easier to keep it going since you have that backward rolling momentum. Do a firehydrant and once the frame comes around, immediatly grab the seat and start kicking. It's also an advantage by putting your thumb on your brake hand on the bars and keep your arms stiff (don't grab the grip with your thumb, put it where your lever attaches to your bars). It helps keeping your bars from "folding". It looks as if your treating it as a squeeker. This is wayy different from a squeeker.

yea be careful with the messiahs man...dont lean too far forward when youre starting...
you can always lean a bit less forward and just have the rear wheel fall back to the ground and start again but once you are flipping over its going to be too late to do anything about it..

i ride 2 times a day, some times 3, for an hour at a time. i practice this for around 20 min's
each session in the garage, when i'm lucky enough to ride outside, i practice longer rolling tricks. i've only been on the LTF about 2 weeks. any tips is always appreciated.

Well, the LTF is going to make things harder to learn these and other under the frame tricks on because it has zero room near the tire, but if that's what you want to ride then go for it.

Watch how he kind of pulls the frame towards him and notice how when he's squeaking he kind of lets that inwards movement of the whole bike take effect. You're trying to do them in a straight line and it's goofing you up after a few tries because you don't want to let the bike lean. You're also stepping out of the trick wayyyyyy too early without giving it a good go. You have to commit to holding onto it for a long time and considering I never really saw you get squeakers dialed, you might be be at the right stage to learn these.

The thing you aren't doing is centering your body as well. I didn't mention it before because I didn't have a good reference to go on but Matt describes it really well.

i'm just trying to get some sh!t dialed before April, and i'm probably freaking out.
i'm not getting any time out side to practice half lashes and forward steams.
would it be better to try and learn it as a backward carl?

It's a really good way to build up strength in that position and it will make the trick easier. Go for it.

Nice stuff, Jerr. I'm working on half hikers as well and wish I could do Karls as smoothly and controlled as you. Seems like a much easier way to get into a half hiker than swinging it around from a double footed steam like I do.
I liked that whiplash hop out thing too. Might have to try that sometime.

quick show @ ghetto basket event series #4. I just put my bike(scooter) together and I didn't warm up at all, just had to do this, that's why 2 fails.

Backwheel hitting is just like putting a foot down.
Its a fault.
You can do that "freestyle no rules" thing as much as you like, but at the end of the day you don't see anyone taking up this sport beacuse they can run around on the floor making airplane noises and call it "flatland".

all of the main tricks/switches I landed in the first hour, really that sh*t is easy. I didn't film anything hard, just something new.
hah and footjam decades are really easy! ok rolaids gave me some foundation to start with. But I landed my first decade from the ground in 7 tries. A bit more and I did it from peg manual.

it really doesn't matter which direction you go. maybe decades are easier, so it's better to start with them. but rolaids are more fun! oh gosh haven't done a rolaid for more than a week!

Haven't watched many flat videos lately. But, I love Tompkins Square Park. I once drove for two days to NYC, and when I finally got there I just hung out there for the night. I'm also very happy that Julia is putting out footage. I'm hoping to see more from her in the future. Atosphere is always good in a video, too. :mellow:

Too bad that movie is bull crap. Watch the real documentary. Gives a much less "hero" perspective of the kid. (I still enjoy the movie, just the kid shouldn't be portrayed quite as heroic as he is in the film.)
One hell of a good soundtrack though.

Nice riding. I think it's weird/cool how you do hang fives and peg wheelies regular footed and steamrollers with the other foot.

before winter i was doing those crackpacker steps with a return to backwards and then to forward but i stil cannot learn crackpacker spins.
I think this foot change is weird ;p, but it's better for my ankle indeed ;p, becouse of that it's hard now for me to link stem roller and hang5 for example but i'm learning stem's on regular foot, and hang5 on other :D

Frame looks really nice. The humidity is killing me as well though the past few days, yesterday I actually opened the door to go out riding took a deep breath and was like "nope" and proceeded to the basement to ride. This part of the summer is pretty brutal but every now and than you get those really perfect days.

damn i didnt see this yet. . that looks like such a dope spot too. quiet and peaceful. looks like it fullfils all of my requirments for a good spot . nice surface, privacy, not too polluted, good air quality. etc.
its not really related to this video but can you do pedal steams? and barflip pedal steams? i was watching one of your other videos the other day and it seems like the sidepedal-karl-barflips you do - you could just turn your foot the other way. ofcourse then it will be a backwards pedal steam roller though. anyways nice work man. nice to see some real flatland .

Its actually sh*t rough and the white lines are a bastard but yeah atmosphere wise its really nice its a college and secondary school surrounding it .Have toyed with pedal steams but nothing to serious yet .....
