Justin had a really nice spinning hitch to no hand spinning steam, Spinning crackpacker, and a very difficult over the headtube on the pedals timemachine.

Malte Orth, I liked the dumptruck in and walkover to end the link, also liked it was one long combo..

Post by: 2flat2furious on May 31, 2012, 09:34:06 PM: Just want to chime in and say that the judges are out of their minds if they think rennace had less difficult tricks than Huck. Variety shouldn't trump difficulty in that case and I think it's stupid I wasn't made aware the battles were going on.

I find it fascinating that Tanhga is using his left foot(peg foot) for front wheel tricks and right foot(peg foot) for all backwheel tricks.. I don't know that I have ever seen this, it does make his riding stand out as unusual and difficult, and in flatland unusual and difficult is good!

Vova, although a little repetitive is amazing, and he does have two different ride ins to the rest being the same combo. Also he has that really nice almost 8 rotation time machine with 5 rotations being on his non primary foot on the pedal.

I need to think about this one a while, there is a lot on my paper, lol ..

Like Flattech said some of his combos are repetitive but he's got different ride ins and his tricks are really difficult. The only thing I saw difficult in Tan's run were the stubbleducks and that jump into them while the rest wasn't really up to par with what Vova is doing.

for example the way he close the crackpacker is really cool, also the way he starts it (from the inside)
it's harder to go in riding with the foot at the inside of the circle;
the triple stubbleduck and the way he starts it it's also pretty hard.
also the fact mentioned by flaTTech of using different foot for front and backwheel riding is interesting.

vova did some hard tricks like the pedal time machine and the half whip to close his combos but the first combo is almost identical to the second one except the fact that in the first one the start is much easier than the start of the second combo he could have won if he didn't toched the ground with the front wheel at the end of the second combo making it a single better combo and if he did something different at the start of the video.

I also noticed the inside crackpacker and subtle pumping it, and that weird rideout. I really wanted to vote tanhga, but I just can't bring myself to do it. If he was doing all those tricks on the same primary peg foot, it wouldn't stand up to what Vova threw down in difficulty. I would guess the way tan rides with different primary peg foot for rear and front wheel tricks is a quirk in the way he learned them. I am kinda amazed by it. If he had done that timemachine on on his right foot and then directly after did a timemachine on his left foot the opposite direction, I vote tan in a heartbeat...

Because I believe difficulty should be weighted slightly more than originality, or in this case just the quirky way tan learned his stuff, I think I got to go with Vova. Plus, I really can't see a world where vova's riding doesn't make it past the first battle in expert, that is some master sh*t right there!

Huge props to tanhga! But my vote is for Vova.

You can't say if it's special or it's just learned that way - it's more difficult. Overall, the really difficult things I saw was the stubleducks, other that that, others were kinda single tricks, but props for the cool crackpacker ride in/out!

Vova showed some really good moves, repeated maybe too much, but the overall difficulty was good. Nice control from inside steam to mccircle and back to regulars with the hitchiker turbines. He put the front wheel down on that combo - the combo ended there for me.

So, great riding from both of you, this was a good battle!

My vote goes to Vova!

I'm sure he was trying to get that pegwheelie from the 1/2 whopper in the first combo too.. Hope he gets it next battle!

I know what your saying about the tanhga thing, and I agree to a point. I would never judge on something that wasn't within the video, but this goes both ways.. What I mean is I can only assume that is the only way tan knows how to ride backwheel and frontwheel because that is the only way shown in the video, so it is his "normal" way of doing it, and for some reason it felt more comfortable to him when he learned it(although that is an assumption). And yes because it is harder to use a different peg foot for front and back, I still gave him more difficulty because that is what he showed. But tan would be taking it to a MUCH higher level of difficulty if that was his opposite way, and he proved that in the video. There is a reason why you see in flat vids all the time a rider do something in one direction and directly after in the opposite. I can do mc circles perfectly in both direction, and other tricks too, but in a battle vid if I only show one direction that will probably be meaningless to the judges. Another way at looking at it is with the way skateboarding is judged. A skater chooses a stance or direction they stand on the board early on in there skating, and if they ride switch they are rewarded for those "switch stance" tricks in contests because it is harder for them and shows variety.

But, I do understand what you mean, and I'm sure we are on the same page. And believe me I did judge what was in the runs and nothing more or less...

Also, very rarely will you ever hear me comment over someones style, and this had no bearing on my decision, but I really dig Steffen's style. Real flow is something you rarely see these days, especially outside of the pro class.

Really I thought vova's run was much better than mine, and thats the run that stands out to me so far that should be master. Big variations, snappy style and alot longer links.

Link length is something I've put a huge focus in in the past 6 months and im starting to see some improvement. Hope I get the opportunity to show ya all.

The only person who I've seen do similar is chad....we really started workin on this one at the same time....and there's no video of him doing his variation. He does it regular pedal 5 with his foot starting out over the bar (where I do it starting crossfooted and then side saddle it over the bar) and then on the turbine/pivot he switches into one of his tamahawk frame stand spins that he does in some of his other tricks.

That trick actually caused alot of grief between me and him. When I first posted up the edit of me learning the trick he was furious. Called me up threatening me and telling me what I can and cannot do.......I played it cool at first but when he kept up the act I decided that being in chads grace isnt worth taking a boatload of bullsh*t from him. He's supposed to be someone to look up to....not someone thats going to boss you around, tell you what tricks you can do and where you can ride.

As I saw some original, difficult tricks, the thing is that the nose turbines with different kicks are all really similar and short, so the variety is not so big + the flow is a bit sketchy. Was impressed by the backwards boomerangs!

bese did a good backwards combo, nice difficulty, really smooth. Love the cliffhanger!

I wouldn't say that Sean takes this with a mile as others said. Just a good edge. My vote goes to Sean!

Agreed!!!! I would pick Gregory just because he used Blockhead for music though :p Bangin song for bangin tricks!

Btw Michele, I used to do hop to wallrides all the time....so....dont ever go street riding with me as your head might explode.

Just pure freestyling on whatever bikes him and his boys could piece together. When I met him he favoured inside foot - same as me. We had a lot of fun riding together and could help each other a lot even though I'd been riding for waaay longer than him. When people who favour inside foot meet another inside foot rider it's a pretty special feeling.

Tanh did well and Vova is good rider. Tanh will be back and Vova will continue. I would have been stumped as a judge and probably have voted for Tanh, but it's a contest and I understand that difficulty has to play out a little more than it does in my day-to-day personal preferences.

I really like Steffen's tech switches, and he was killing that front wheel. With the tech switches parts of Steffen's front wheel riding was more difficult compared to Vova's front wheel. Although Vova had some real nice spinning hitchhiker and nice front wheel too, he also had lots of great back wheel, including a half whopper jumped to back peg wheelie directly into the no hand pedal timemachine. I think Vova takes the edge on variety. He also has that crazy X foot no hand on the pedals time, ridiculous! Vova's overall difficulty may also just barely edge out Steffen's, but really only because increased variety and the crazy ways he is doing those timemachines. In the second one he puts his leg over the toptube first then back and then brings it up over the headtube, that is a big shift in your weight distribution that needs to be corrected mid spin. I believe what sometimes looks like subtle stuff like that is quite difficult, and adds to variety too. In the end I would say Vova gets through to the next battle.

Tough battle. But Mateus had many bangers in his vid. Really nice whiplash jumped to pegwheelie, I had it paused when both wheels were at peak height and was surprised how high he was during the jump, it didn't look like it just playing vid.. He was using both feet and carving both directions in the pegwheelie, harder then it looks. All 4 of his decade tricks were done in different ways. A rolaid from the peg and a rolaid from the frame feel very different to me, I have done them both ways and had them in previous battle vids. He had some hard nose wheelie stuff on the BB and on the pedal, along with the boom with the back tire off the ground. Difficult switch from hangfive to halfpacker. That whopper starting with the feet crossed on back pegs, tough stuff. He also changed up his vid almost completely from his last battle.

Denny had tons of great, very well done tricks. With tons of turbine skills, and great rolling. I really like his vid, and it made the vote tough for me.

But IMO Mateus's run was more original, and had some really difficult stuff in it. So I'm going with Mateus.

I have had serious health issues these past 3 weeks and have only been able to get a few clips, though most are almost a month old now.

I wont have near enough video (barely half) and its not up to the standard. I think mateus is a extremely talented rider and would have edged me out, so I will likely have to forfeit.

Post by: MICHELE on August 27, 2012, 12:19:53 AM: this is the hardest battle that i had to vote, in fact i waited some days to have more time to think on the videos and to watch them more times because both riders are super good they both do hard tricks and they have two completely different stiles.(if i have to be completely honest i also waited to see if some other judge would vote first, not to copy them but to have at leasts something to compare because as i said, to take a decision was super hard for me).

anyway mi final decision is to give my vote to Mateus Beckmann Flatland because he did AMAZING tricks and filled his video with super hard and also original stuff, all the videos he made for this online battles are incredible, he his a really hardcore rider.

Post by: flaTTech on August 27, 2012, 10:24:00 PM: Both riders made very good use of the time limit. Mateus by jam packing banger after banger. Vova with his fast riding and great combos with back and front wheel.

Overall difficulty of the runs is similiar, but for very different reasons. Vova's X-foot no hand times stand out as super difficult in his run, but he has used the trick (and combos) in previous battles. According to the rules of the online battles tricks shouldn't be repeated unless in different combos. Although I am not going to dismiss this crazy trick, I am going to weight it slightly less then when he previously used this trick.

The difficulty of Mateus's stuff was extremely high too. Some very difficult switches and jumps, use of both feet, nose wheelies on pedals plus switch foot on rear peg (shown carving both ways) and both jumped to a big switch. ALL of his no brake decades were shown in various ways, increasing the difficulty and variety. To much stuff to cover..

I believe Mateus takes the lead in originality. Doing very difficult jumps and switches in ways I have never seen. He is also switching up his battle vids by not using the same switches. So, I'm also giving him an advantage because of this, this is also part of the rules for judging.

Both of these riders should be really proud of their riding, they are both amazing riders! Masters for sure. I really would like to say this is a tie, but I guess I can't do that...

My vote is going to Mateus Beckmann.

Post by: ondo on August 27, 2012, 10:50:10 PM: Vova did some really good spinning combos, they didn't have as hard links as Mateus had, but the fact, that Vova had really long combos and could link the tricks, makes up for some difficulty.. and of course, the x foot no hand time machine was the bomb. Really good flow, both front and rear wheel. Wanted to see more variety in the combos.

Mateus did a lot of small banger tricks, which were really original and new, at least to the point that he did new tricks for his final video, so I see this progression and variety he has. Good difficulty and variety. Wanted to see some of the bangers linked in a combo, that would increase the difficulty more.

By this point I already watched the videos again.. Tough choice, I would like to give a tie too. But seriously my vote goes to Mateus Beckmann Flatland.

Literally not a single clip from within the past month. 95% of the clips are from 2-3 months ago.......needed to add some filler in from the previous edit due to being out from riding (health issues, vacation, family etc). Been a crazy long 2 months....alot of new concepts displayed here I meant to hold on until I got them in the manner I wanted, but I guess if I just sit on the clips forever I will never show them :P

PS - i apologize for the editing but its been a while and I needed to vent. The edit (unedited portion) for the comp is from 2:13 - 4:00 - making it less than 1min 50s

Cheers to Mateus, Vova and all the other contestants. The main purpose of these competitions (in my mind) is to instill motivation in us to raise our limits above and beyond what we are currently at, to compete with what we see as 'better' than us. The constant raising of the bar is what makes us talented individuals so lets keep raising that bar until we break the sky. It can be constantly frustrating, and I cannot tell you how many times I"ve thrown my bike over the past 3 months trying to film a link.....but in the end its all worth it as we progress and become more and more talented!
