Title: Who is the best all-around freestyle rider?
Post by: flat1ander on February 26, 2011, 01:50:44 AM
It seems like a lot more people used to dabble in all the different forms of freestyle bmx. Im wondering whose still around today that represents that ideology of an all around bmx rider who can ride everything fairly well.

Chad Degroot seems like hes a fairly good park rider with an emphasis on flatland but I'm sure there are plenty of other guys who are proficient at all the different bmx disciplines.

Basically pick the best vert rider who also rides flatland and you have your winner because nobody rides vert anymore.

I havent really seen a rider that competes pro in flatland and competes atleast expert in another discipline. or the other way around.

Haven't seen him ride in a long time, but Tom Haugen was a good answer for this.

I saw him once at a GT show in 2000 or 2001 and he only rode ramps (only Trevor rode flat)...and Tom could do eight brakeless whiplashes back then.

I was just about to suggest Tom Haugen.I just saw him last Thursday at the local park ,He rode my bike last Sunday and did a steamroller into forward hitch hiker and left the other riders there stun. He`s got his tricks on locked down ,he comes to the park, stays focused and throws down.
I interviewed him for www.bmxfreestyler.com (http://www.bmxfreestyler.com) .Here it is...

DMC
He still can kill vert, you only need to take a peek on you tube to see some flat, street, or park.
Another would be Rick Moliterno...
Tom does rip it up as well. ;-)

Aaron Behnke... Paul Osicka.. Brian Tunney... Mark Webb has some pretty hard flat tricks that never make it to edits.

Edit - Dave Mirra hands down. Double backflips and still can do pinkys wit the best of em.

My kind of topic...

DMC will always be the best freestyle rider ever...

Rick Molinterno actually RACED BMX too.

I can't believe no one mentioned Jay Miron.  He has some SICK flatland links too.

Dave Mirra rode the hell out of everything.

Woody Itson invented the 540 aerial.  Not to bad for a "flatlander".

In the ATX crew...R-Dog(Ruben Castillo"This ain't segregation folks, this is freestyle"), Chadwick Davis, Gary First(55 years old and still rides dirt, street and flat), Cullen(rides flat, dirt, street..all on a 24 inch Cruiser), Hector Dangus(skateboards aswell), Brett and now that I have a Collier, I'll be riding everything again.

Arguments about "best ever" aside, I think any discussion about all-around freestyle riders should include my pal Bill Nitschke. I have a lot of respect for those who can ride everything; I can't.

Watch some old ECD videos... Jeff Crawn (Jersey represent)  before the terrible accident he had was one of the best all around riders.. Triple Decades, hand rails, trails, the smoothest mini ramp rider I have ever seen.

Jay Miron used to tear it up on flatland back in the mid 90s at Huntington Beach.

Kevin did a 540 IN ONE OF THOSE OLD DORKIN VIDEOS. Heard he learned backflips at Woodward a few years back.

is it really street to just do hangfives between transistions?

Excellent post jawn. Just goes to show you, flatland is fundamental bike control, and bike control translates into every single aspect of riding.

Brian Vowell!!
of course there are the plenty of others who've already been mentioned, but BV - he invented the 360 tailwhip, he does the craziest hang-5 park lines you'll ever see - and 10 years before all the new school kids started jumping on the hang-5 band wagon. all around complete shredder of every bmx discipline. i don't want to see this guy's legacy die. he is too incredible and far too unknown. he has a few amazing clips in baco 9 & 10... please check it out!

Dennis McCoy for best all round competition freestyle rider. He's won comps as a pro in all disciplines - flat, vert, bowl, mini and street. I know he used to race, not sure to what ability but I bet he was good at that too.

Yeah, the 360 over the spine to hang-five is nuts, as someone mentioned.  I think he also does/did wall rides to hang-fives.  Damn.

He's not quite on the Miron/DMC level, but Brett Downs is the only person I've ever seen do a double decade and a double backflip in the same day.
