Title: '87 General RL Osborn Pro
Post by: JUGGARNAUT on January 17, 2010, 01:46:31 AM
I bought one to replace the one I gave away. I am going to be building this up and will be posting progress pix.I will also include discriptions of work done to that point. This pic is from BMX Museum.com for comparison purposes and Approximately where I will be goin' with this.
It will be built with ALOT of parts I bought and Traded for on here. Old ,Mid and New School parts to boot! I loved this bike BITD and have been lookin for one since then But they go for BIG $$$$ in NOS condition. So I found this on Ebay with a $200 starting price ,watched it for a week, noone bid except me and I got it for $200 + $35 shipping. So thats the starting point.
FOR THE RECORD ,I WILL BE RIDING THIS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In my area bitd this bike was like a unicorn that none of us ever saw outside of issues of Freestylin'... lol

Personally, the bike I ALWAYS wanted was the '88(?) Woody Itson Strike Zone. The white/red/chrome finish always did it for me whenever I saw pics of that bike. Have fun with the build!

The bike will come with Dia Compe Nippons on the 1" stock forks ,but I'll use the WTP's I had Chromed and this HS I am getting from todborndead. It will fit in the 1" headtube ,but allow the use of 1 1/8" forks. it took a bit of "prying" from me to score this. Thank You Tod. ;D

Lookin' good Juggers.

A always wanted an Osborn Pro...but never had the money.  Like stated before, it was like a unicorn.

I should be able to get those parts out to you sometime this week.  Well, like the early part of the week.

Just thinking out loud here, but I wonder how much Redlines sales dropped when RL went to General.  Seems that a lot of people that were riding RL-20ll's switched over to Generals when he started riding for them.  Makes you think about how influential he was.

Thanks Tod,I'd have to agree with this mostly because they were cheaper and sure, not US made like RL 20 II's.Thier quality was up there with Haro Since Anlun made most Haros then too. I do think there was a shift because He was such an influence then. ;D I can't wait to finish and Ride her !!

@ Splinter, Thank you too Bro.

I think it was a big smack in the chops when Stu Thomsen went from Redline to Huffy!  My friends and I could not believe it when it happened.  I mean...Huffy, of all brands, was one we would NEVER buy no matter who rode their bikes.  I know Stu wasn't freestyle but still...

Sorry, didn't mean to derail the thread, carry on with the General...!

I think the Murray frames were actually better than the Stu Thomsen frames.  I had a Murray X20C frame and it was TIG welded cromoly, not like the standard production Murray frames.  Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the frame Stu rode was the same as one you could buy in a store.  His components might not have been the same, but I really think the frame was.  Pics of him in magazines showed him on a bike with a chain guard and reflectors!!  That really sunk it for me...

I'm betting his was the same as the ones you bought in Wal Mart.  I've never seen a single one with good welds or seen one that didn't have a stamped steel seatpost clamp and a spot-welded brake bridge.  On the other hand, the X20C was cromoly and was TIG welded...at least Murray tried to do something cool.  Huffy just put Stu's name on one of their mild-steel mig-welded bombs and paid Stu big $$ to ride it...

When I was 14-15, I rode an RL Pro (maybe the 88 model). I believe I got it after seeing a General show featuring Sean Leslie (with whom I traded an "X" Swatch for a set of basically homecrafted bolt-on [not threaded] pegs). I didn't keep the frame long because it was really too big for me. It was a sharp-looking bike, though; mine was black and chrome with flourescent stickers that really "popped", if you'll pardon the expression. But to me, all of the color and graphics combinations of the RL (and many other bikes from that period, as well) were pretty excellent.

Though I no longer have the RL, I do have a few 80's bikes that I'd like to restore to riding condition, just as a hobby.  They do have a bit of rust, though, and I was hoping you (or other members) would have some suggestions for removing it. Is it possible to simply polish it out? Or, is there a chemical that makes things easier? Your advice would really be appreciated.

I started Polishing with a Cheaper harsher polish, then I'll finish up with Mothers. The Black RL I had was an '87 ,I bought it From the General Freestyle Team, in '87 the Black ones were TEAM ONLY frames, in '88 they swapped the Graphics and offered the Black colorway. I never even seen an '88 in Black till MANY years later on BMX Museum. I am very Happy to have  this bike again. ;D  More to come!

I can run a 30t with 996's and Fly springs and an 11 in the back. Tried it earlier, just about 3mm of clearance. Like this Zippo I built.

Getting a new chain with shorter side plate to ensure enough clearance. 1/2 x 1/8, it'll be ,you guessed it Chrome! ;D  Anyone know where I can buy some extra Fly brake hardware to replace what I'm using? LMK please. ;D

I just finished restoring my 87 General Osborn Pro. I got it in 87 as a graduation present from my parents. Then my brother had it for a while, then a few years back I gave it to my son who still had it sitting in his shed. I'll post some pics when I get a camera.

I was able to keep it pretty much all original, though I had to powder coat a few things that were beyond polishing. I think the only new things  I put on were tires and pedals and a seatpost. Maybe brake levers too. Changed up the color combination a bit because of the powder coating, new decals. It looks awesome. I loved that bike. My next "bikes of my youth" project is the 85 Haro Master I have waiting for money, and for me to finish my Hoffman Strowler. Now i just need to find a Hutch Tricks Star to complete the collection.

Damn that looks so sweet. I just gave mine a 24 hour soak in vinegar to get rid of the surface rust, the polished it with Blue Magic metal polish and Charmin. I don't know if that's something anyone has ever heard of, but I guess Charmin is the one TP with no wood fiber in it. Polishes up real nice. I hope to have pics up this weekend of that and the other old school bike I just finished. I'll post up some of my partial Strowler too.

Mock up.
Need a longer stem, these bars might be a no go, no probs, got LOTS of bars to choose from, but I'll give 'em a try. Stem will probably be the new 45mm Fly Media model, Polished of course. ;D Will gradually also include their new Levers in Polished as well, but for now I'll go with what I have. I got the cranks ,sprocket and Hoffman bars today from Dave00.
Anyway, the first shot of mock up.............;D

Gyro w/London Mod,basically a new version of what I ran BIYD.Then was a ACS Pro Rotor, spunit 180 degrees and drilled another cable hole ,slipped in anothe cable, got a Spintech lower cup which had Double cable stops and ran Double lower rear cables.;D
This will be a Polished Mobeus with London Mod to the rear Diatech 996's w/ Fly brake hardware for clearance . tried a different Stem (50mm Hoffman) and Bars (8x26 Mosh) to check for more room and more leverage with the wider bars,I think this is it,heres another pic.

The decals on the '87 Chrome RL's are Chrome backed. I'm gettin' a set from AJK bikes. These graphics were only on the '87's.

double check you ajk decals, as I have had a fair few decals off him that the ink falls off or has been printed (or designed) badly.

I've had the same problem with a couple, but it always seems to be the small 4130 CroMo frame stickers. They flake off just taking the backing off of them.

I just had a frame sticker made for a Haro Invert by someone I've had do dirtbike graphics for me in the past. Came out absolutely perfect. Little thicker than what I've been getting from AJK. I sent her a Haro Sport sticker, and a picture of an Invert with the frame sticker. Cost me $15. I hope to have a picture of it in a few days.

I only plan using the main frame decal, the seattube and maybe the headtube seeing how thats all I had left on the OG. I had a VSW sticker on the HT and all the others were taken off.

Hey Juggs....heres a pic of my Chrome Sport.

Okay...gotta ask.  What year is this, and wear are the awful L shaped rear platforms on the Sports/Masters from the 80's?  That was one of the reasons I never really rode a Master/Sport.

Did you hack it somehow, or is this a 90's version I have forgot about?

Looks like a retro sport, I think it was released in 2006...

Hey Juggs...also, did you hack those rear platforms off, or did you get them like that?  I noticed Timo "2 Fresh" hacked his off his red one too.

I hacked my rear platforms off my General.  Seems like everyone did.  I was thinking about how a lot of people hacked stuff off back in the 80's.  I had a pair of Hutch forks that I loved(the dropouts were double thick), but hated the pegs welded on...so I hacked those off too.

Anywho, these Generals are coming along nice.  I love the all school mix.  Classic and functional.

NICE!  for those out the olds school loop, this bike was actually the preferred choice of the evolving flatlander OVER the haro master. The top tube made it lighter and roomier.  Master was still cool because it had the fresh kneesavers.  Best of both worlds going on here.

I don't remember it that way.  The Master was shorter (which probably eliminated any weight savings and made for better handling) and had a steeper head angle and pretty much no one that specialized in flat rode one.

Lot's of people used Sports who did both though (like Wilkerson).  The Sport was a better flatland bike than the Master was a ramp bike, IMO.

I didn't want to be the one to say that ...... I DON"T ever remember seeing that ,let alone hearing that. The Sport was the RAMP bike with S L O W E R  geometry as I remember it.

The 3 bike shops I worked at sold Haro Sports cheaper to get them OFF the floor to make room for the next years Haro Masters and General RL Osborn Pro's.... Sorry , just the way IT was in the Late 80's early 90's where I Worked , Lived and Rode.... ;D  It could have been different where you lived and rode.

I had one and the 73.5 deg HA was really slow, and the frame was a tank as well. When I switched to a Trick Star(invasion tour weapon) it was a world of difference, 74.5 HA and 2 lbs lighter, what a difference.
Haros were the heaviest frames :P

I saw that, I can't run a 25t because of clearance. Macneil just released those a couple of months ago. I could buy a Poverty blank in 30t and Machine myself though.........hmmm...
Good lookin out though. Thank you.

i think you guys are more refering to the 84-85.  I'm speaking more on the 87-88. Team models especially.  By the time they were available in the local shops, kids didnt ride ramps AT ALL around my way. It was all about squeakin, chickens and ropes. The 1" difference i never noticed because they (cant say I because i sure as hell didnt) all had sports.

No, I'm specifically thinking of the 87-88's.  Now, what you claim may very well be true in your area, with the people you know.  I'm just saying that I believe that most of the rest of the world did things the opposite.  Whenever I went to an AFA contest, I don't remember anyone who wasn't primarily a ramp rider using a Sport for flatland.  The only two I can think of is Matt Hofman and Joe Johnson, and they just rode flat to compete in the "overall".

I had one and the 73.5 deg HA was really slow, and the frame was a tank as well. When I switched to a Trick Star(invasion tour weapon) it was a world of difference, 74.5 HA and 2 lbs lighter, what a difference.

I don't remember it that way either.  The 87-88 Master frame wasn't heavy at all.  IIRC, it was around the same weight as the Trickstar.  Later Master's gained some pounds though between the extra grind tubing, to the huge downtubes of later generation Masters.

I was refering to the sport.
My Trickstar was 5.3lbs I weighed it at my work on our digital scales. Even though I never owned a master,, except for my street master, I dont believe that frame was in the same weight class as the trickstar.

Back in the day, I should have been riding one of these instead of an '87 or '88 Master (before my '89)...mainly because it has the twin top tube without the ridiculous frame standers built into the chainstays in the rear. That was just the worst. It made your pegs about an inch long when the bike was upright. I was so damn happy when I got my '89 Master and it didn't have those ridiculous standers on it.

These frames rule as far as old school goes. I liked the Bravo pros too if the frame standers are sawed off.
