Is this guy like the best in the world or what?
Matt Wilhelm (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XwfC8FAf2o#normal)
-
It seems to me that Matt gets over looked a lot...I mean, he places really well in contests and has probably one of the best selling videos right now...I just think he doesn't get the "hype" that some of the other top riders get though.
Definitely one of my top three riders though. He spins SO fast and just kills it!
-
I agree, Matt seems to be a very modest rider. I wonder how much he really enjoys the spotlight sometimes.
-
when i first started out i used to email him all the time and ask him questions and he really helped me out he's a cool guy ;D i think he rides for suelo and hoffman and a few other companies? i'd definately buy stuff with his name on it  lol
and doesnt he ride with front and back brakes?
-
Matt Wilhelm is extremely over looked, I think partially to the fact that he is as good as he is. All his tricks are so dialed, it's almost robotic. It doesn't help that he does many of the same tricks on his contest runs, but on the flip side, so does ever body else. One of my favs for sure.
-
I think he is one of the few real pros, and by that I mean, "ride all day long and win contests kind of rider", he does nothing else in his professional life and flatland is his life for real, food to keep his body alive, clothes to dress, etc. a true flatland professional.
I personally don't like his style but I do realize he is a very skilled rider.

Music production, web design, and video production."

Matt isn't just about riding. He is a very talented musician, and one of the most remarkably kind and intelligent riders I've ever had the pleasure of meeting.
Take his skills on a bike away, and you still have an exceptionally good human being. It's a shame the same cannot be said about all our best riders.
-
yes matt is a great guy, and one of the best. Super cool.

I'd agree with this. He's kinda like the Daniel Dhers of flat. Nice guy, super talented and from what I can tell, the hardest working guy in flatland. But he doesn't have any style. I look at his riding and go "Oh, wow, that looked really hard" but his riding doesn't get my blood pumping in the slightest.
All of that said, flat desperately needs more guys like him to get more exposure. Always did, always will.
-
You see this guy in ground rules and vids here and there online & are very impressed...
But seeing him ride in person is f*cking mesmerizing!
He was my highlight of jomopro.
Even though he may get somewhat overlooked he is definately a crowd favorite.
If the crowds were more involved w/ the contest voting he would prob win 1st place a lot.
-
But he doesn't have any style.
Heh, Matt Wilhelm influenced flatland far more than people realize. When he started busting out the upside-down pedaling megaspin in 1999/2000, no one else was doing stuff like that. A year later, all the best riders at the time (Kuoppa, Meyer, Dolan, Cerra, etc.) were doing pedalling tricks.
-
"Style" is a subjective thing, I guess. I don't see much of it in Wilhelm's riding. But I do appreciate what a great rider he is.
For instance, I'll always be a big Ron Wilkerson fan. Not the most technical guy, but.........style for miles.

Please do not forget to wipe the sh*t dribble from your lips when talking out of your ass. Thanks.

Thanks, man. Oddly enough, you're one of the guys on this board that I had respect for too.

like c _ _ _ e? :P

I agree with TJ. Matt is one of the most genuine guys you will ever meet. He's also one of those guys that is pretty much good at everything he does. Much respect for his riding and commitment to flatland.

I love me some Matt.

I don't think anybody in the flat... forget that... BMX community can talk bad about Matt Wilhelm.

Don't pay any attention to the smack talkers Dion. There are loads of us here that love you. So don't dare quit posting. GF just isn't the same place without you.

matt is the guy that introduced me to flatland thru the ground rules vid that one of my friends ordered. if it wasnt for that, i prob would of never known flatland even existed.

This is precisely why I say flat needs more guys like him.

He doesn't have style? What a sh*tty thing to say, you are a douche. There are countless tricks I've seen Matt do that I've never seen anyone do before, he is full of style. There are only a few riders I've ever seen over the years with his unique style and intensity. Have some respect, don't be a douche.

I said the same thing and got a round of PM's talking about how much of a dick I was sent from frog himself. Careful King, you might get on the mans sh*t list lol.

And the circle of being the forum troublemaker is complete. You've decided to bring PMs into the public forum. Stay classy, 2f2f.
Have you ever wondered if the reason you're always in one fight or another on here isn't because everyone else is stupid and that it might just be you?
Think about it, Mr. Genius.
I said lots and lots of good stuff about Wilhelm. And also pointed out that his lack of a style in my opinion was just that- an opinion. It's a subjective thing. I'm most certainly not the final word on anything and don't ever expect to be.
You guys are trying to hard to tear me apart for saying what I like. Are ya gonna go nuts on me because I like vanilla and you like chocolate? Haha. Cripes.
-

One of the things that I've learned over the years is that people that go on about respect tend to be the least respectful themselves. Interesting, huh?
I think my posts weren't out of line in any way at all. I didn't lie or say he sucked. In fact, I said the opposite. Said he was fantastic. And an important figure in the sport. But hey, don't let overlooking that stop you from attempting to crucify me.
And I'll tell ya what I definitely haven't done on here- calling anyone names on a public forum. It almost borders on respectful. But totally overlook that too, okay? Cool.
-
Anywho, back to Matt...I can see kind of where someone would think Matt doesn't have a good style...the deal is that he is spinning so fast, and does such technical tricks, that he doesn't have time for flash. He hits his links/combos hard and fast...which to me is an awesome "style", but I could imagine people that think it's a lack of style. I think they're wrong, but...that's the beauty of FREEstyle, everyone has "style" and some are more unique than others. What I like about Matt's style is that he tends to generate momentum and speed from thin air. It doesn't seem like he really "pumps", so where does he generate that speed from? The man's skills and bike control are exceptional, and that is great style if you ask me.
-
I have always looked up to Matt and "theking's" riding.
Both DO have style, and both are great genuine people.
Opinions are opinions, but best kept to yourself in this thread.
-
always a fan of matt wilhelm..one of the best role model in bmx me thinks.
and to froghammer.... welcome to global fight, I mean flat.. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Thanks, man. I made some sort of an impression or another in my first day or two because the froghammer/2f2f interaction has made someone's signature! A dubious honour at best. Haha.

The problem is that you said straight up "he has no style". For people who are serious riders like Matt, that dedicate their lives to riding, thats just a shady thing to say. Its one thing to say that behind closed doors, but to come on a public forum where Matt no doubt will read that (if not already) just shows your character. And for the record, Im a very respectful person until I come across a douche.
-
i personally think matt has great style, he looks so at ease but at the same time spins like a tire in fast&Furious
-
I have the up-most respect for you, just because of that reason alone "king"
Hope. All is well.

I like to make Matt sandwiches

How about those abbs of steel at 1:56 in the video at the start of this post. hubba hubba.
