Such a hard question but I'd have to say martti.there's just simply not many tricks he can do,front wheel and back.his stuff year ago was bad ass and his newer stuff is to.can't to much f*ck with him. I feel the same bout justin also.

I would say right now in flatland it is hard to say "The best is..."  There are great contest riders and great session riders.  there are some guys who are really pushing our sport. so saying who is best is all in the eye of the beholder. but for sake of arguement i will say terry, justin, foakes are up top right now. all time best u will get same answer.  jones and chase.

Thats because he and every flat rider is using tricks jones ,chase ,mccoy, etc. invented. So there really is no best rider.Because well it's an opinion. Terry is up there on the list anytime you can literally turn your bike in to a skateboard thats cool.

Go in the fland media and find the two 90's vids they have kevin jones and chase in them

well from when i started i ll say the best riders in my opinion.

most original riders:
kevin jones,chad degroot,andrew farish,chase gouin,martti kuoppa.hiro m,terry adams,jesse puente,jeorge gomez,adam kun,mathias,phil dolan,yohei uchino,alex jumelin,sam foakes,alexis desaulnaux and like 20-30 more

spinning masters: matt willhelm,sean peters,york uno,chase gouin,frank lucas etc

rolling masters:sam foakes,terry adams,kevin jones,chad degroot ,chase gouin...

newschool riders:mathias,adam kun,waldemar,bram...

i should refer kevin jones as he brought most of the tricks to the game so he thought most of them with chase g

i had favourite and favourite riders at different times.

i dont think you can choose one rider only...
but if i chose there would be riders that are killing both wheels

so my favourite riders is:........
B zeke
check him out ..

Kevin Jones and Chase Gouin.

Google Plywood Hoods.

+1

We'd still be doing front peg hops if it weren't for these two.

Jones and Gouin are serious inspirations, but my man at the moment HAS to be Chad Johnston... His pegless stuff is amazing.

The video speaks for itself: http://www.sickchildbikes.com/content.php?section=Videos (http://www.sickchildbikes.com/content.php?section=Videos)  This is really pushing me to ride at the mo!

I think it would be tough for anyone to ever match the sheer inventiveness and versatility of Kevin Jones, especially since it was he who came up with so many of the standard positions still in use today. There will probably never be a comparable ground breaker (speaking of volume of trick positions, switches, etc...) in flatland.

But as for who is the 'best' in the world? Such questions are relative to one's evaluational criteria. Not to mention the term 'best' is terribly vague, which leaves me thinking that questions of this sort are silly and unimportant.

To say who the best of all time is, you have to look at how far ahead of the game they where in their day. There really isn't much doubt that Kevin Jones and Chase Gouin where two of the most original and innovative, not to mention years ahead of most riders in the early 90's.

Who's the best today? It's mostly opinion, though the BMX Flatland World Circuit standings as of 2008 are as follows:
1    Sam Foakes(UK)
2    Yohei Uchino (Japan)
3    Matt Wilhelm (USA)
4    Terry Adams (USA)
5    Matthias Dandois (France)
5    Justin Miller (USA)
7    Dominik Nekolny (Czech Rep)
8    Hiroya Morizaki (Japan)
9    Raphael Chiquet (France)
10   York Uno (Japan)

Terry is my favorite! <3 <3 <3  ^_^

I'm not a big Degroot fan(Dude's a wierdo). But this guy went out of his way to learn all the top pros at the time's tricks, showcase them in a small video/commercial part and then just quit competing. Chad did stuff in 500 miles that guys today are doing and brakeless links that I'd kill to learn. Very progressive for the time. The best? Probably not, but definitely top 5.

.... That is the point you idiot, it is subjective, if there was a definitive answer to a question why would anybody ask, general interest is most commonly found in the conflict between opinions not from studying fact! Like if i said what is your favorite  book or film, there is no right or wrong answer because each individual response would be founded from an honest opinion that relates to that particular persons likes and dislikes.

This question can not be answered. You cant choose the best of an art form. You can of course choose your favorite rider. What we can answer is who has contributed the most to flatland. Kevin Jones and Chase Gouin in my opinion.

I agree with Brandon on this one.  Kevin and Chase really pushed flatland into where it is today.  As for modern day riders, it is all about the style of riding you are attracted to.  The diversity in Flatland is what makes it great.  That being said I don't think anyone in the world would argue that Martti Kuoppa is the baddest mutha f-cka on the planet.

Yeah Erik, I second that. Martti definitely brought forth the next generation of riding. Matthias has the most control and switches at high speed though. I have mad respect for people who can be equally sick on the back wheel as the front wheel. All 3 I've mentioned can dominate back and front wheel.

What proves that the "best" is just an opinion are the pro's themselves. They do the same run(with occasonally an alternate) for years or improve on the same run,but they get different standings every comp. Some flare up on to podiums but some linger up at the top fo awhile. But like I tell my mom( a school teacher) its hard to measure brilliance.

Yeah, I agree K.J  & C.G are Picassos of the Flatland/BMX world. The Asian riders too are have great tech and style.

There is no more best, if one considers this to be an art form. Those who do this sport and have mastered the art of balance and who fully understand the creative process in the circular motion, hmmm...in freestyle BMX theres got to be variations and combos that have not been explored or created, what is circular has no beginning or end so I imagine someone taking things to a higher level through the use of fundamental flatland riding structures or destroying every process/acts by means of chaos in order to create; explore motion/style/tech.  Alright where are you and are you born?  ;D

This thread won't start a debate as long as noone forces there opinion on anyone however the question is very subjective.  I think a more appropriate question would be which rider style is the most influential.  The obvious riders that come to mind Chase Gouin, Kevin Jones, Jesse Puente, etc.  Now the riders with the most beautiful style thats a whole different question.  I love and cannot get enough of Adam Kun, Domonik Nekoly, and Wolfgang Sauter, there styles really stick to my mind.
Title: Re: Who is the best in the world now and ever?
Post by: azflatlander on July 23, 2008, 09:14:27 AM
I think it depends on the Era.

Martin Aparijo ruled the early 80's with his showmanship, originality and style.

Dennis McCoy ruled the mid 80's with combos and links.

Kevin Jones ruled the late 80's with the re-definition of tricks and set up a new style of riding that would be defined today as modern flatland.

I think everybody falls into the 90's under Kevin Jones up until Martti.

i know people are going to get sick of me asking questions but i have one more on this subject... ha ha

how accurate is the world rankings? I hear a lot of people talking about unjustified results, i know again it goes back to the fact that how your view each riders style e.t.c... is subjective but there must be an element of credit given for the technical difficulty and length of each riders tricks and links aside from just what is most stunning to watch. so with that in mind are the current world rankings a fair reflection on the riders real standings?
Title: Re: Who is the best in the world now and ever?

A FEW ERAS
TOO MANY STYLES
AND TOO MANY GREAT RIDERS

KEVIN JONES, CHASE GOIUN, PAUL OSICKA, JESSE PUENTE,
AND CHAD DEGROOT ARE CONSIDERED THE BEST OR TOP 5
AND THEN YOU HAVE TO CONSIDER THE ERAS IN 1982-1988,
1988-1995, 1997-2003, 2003-2008(NOW)

I LIVED THRU THE IST ERA WHICH I CALL THE IST GOLDEN GATE
PARK ERA..RON WILKERSON, ROBERT PETERSON, MAURICE MEYERS,
MIKE PERKINS.. ETC AND THE SECOND GOLDEN GATE ERA WAS WITH AARON
DULL, PETE BRANDT, ERIC EMERSON, CARLY GARCIA, JOE PULUSKI,
ETC 1988-1991 THO EVERYTHING STARTED TO REALLY DISAPPEARED IN
LATE 1990 AS FLATLAND AND FREESTYLE DIED ALOT. THE B.S. SERIES
DID KEEP THE SCENE HERE ATLEAST INTACK FOR ANOTHER 4 YEARS
BEFORE IT PRETTY MUCH DISAPPEARED TIL LATE 1997 WHEN ROSS SMITH,
MARCEL TREMBLAY, AND SOME OTHERS APPEARED AND THE SPOT IN DANVILLE
BECAME THE MAIN FOCUS OF NOR-CAL FLATLAND.

I AM NOT SAYING ALL SCENES OR FLATLAND WAS LIKE THIS BUT THIS IS
WHAT HAPPENED HERE IN NOR-CAL SO I SEE DIFFERENT GENERATIONS
OF FLATLANDERS (IN THE EARLY DAYS OF 1982-1988) AND EVERY THING BECAME
MORE ROLLING AND SCUFFING STYLES AND THE FIRST PLYWOOD HOOD
VIDEOS CAME OUT IN THE LAST OF THE IST GENERATION(1982-1988) INTO
THE EARLY PARTS OF THE SECOND GENERATION(1988-1995). FLATLAND REALLY
CHANGED AT THIS POINT SO YOU CAN NUMBER ALL YOU WANT AND SAY WHO
EVER WAS THE BEST BUT YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT THE DIFFERENT GENERATIONS
OF FLATLAND RIDERS TOO.

I AM AN OLD TIMER SO I SEE THINGS OTHERS DONT AND BEEN IN ALL OF THE GENERATIONS OF FLATLANDERS AND GONE TO MANY CONTESTS AND JAMS
TO KNOW ALL THE DIFFERENT STYLES, SCUFFING, ROLLING, WHEEL FLIPS,
BODY VARIALS STYLES ETC.

THIS QUESTION IS WAY TOO WIDE AND BROAD IN TOPIC TO BE ANSWERED
CORRECTLY AND WILL JUST BECOME AN BIG ARGUEMENT BUT WE ALL KNOW
WHO THE MASTERS OR PEOPLE WHO INVENTED 95% OF ALL THE TRICKS OUT
THERE SO YOU HAVE TO LIST THEM AS BEING TOP 5 FOR THAT BUT TO LIST
THE BEST OF ALL TIME, YOU JUST CANT DO THAT REALLY AS I HAVE SAID THIS
QUESTION IS WAY TOO BROAD AND OPEN ENEDED TO ANSWER IT.

How can you justify who is best when considering the world rankings? They have been judged by the same crew of people that judge the same 20 riders over and over for a decade now.

Not to mention the sponsor and friend ties.

In the 1980's the Contest defined the rider until Kevin Jones. He would gel in a competition but he would own the the practice area at a comp.

Top 5? I don't know if Chase G, Paul O, Jesse P & Chad D would be considered the "best" because they were all proteges of what Kevin Jones was doing. But I agree this topic is an argument waiting. lol

ALL THOSE RIDERS INVENTED STYLES AND TRICKS
SO YEAH YOU CAN PUT THEM AS ONE OR AS SOME OF THE
INVENTORS OF FLATLAND AS WE KNOW IT..MODERN FLATLAND
AND MAYBE YOU WERE NOT AROUND BUT I WAS BACK IN THOSE
DAYS AND LIVED THRU ALL THOSE ERAS OF FLATLAND.

I THINK EVERYONE AGREES THAT THOSE 5 ARE THE INVENTORS AND
PATHFINDERS OF FLATLAND..NO DOUBT... BUT WHO IS THE BEST PERIOD
IS HARD TO SAY UNLESS YOU SAY JONES BUT AGAIN THERE HAS BEEN
MANY ERAS OF FLATLANDERS, STYLES AND GREAT RIDERS AS I HAVE SAID!

WE CANT DEBATE ON SUCH AN WIDE AND BROAD SUBJECT..CAN WE?

thats the problem and they mention matthew, or Adam or whoever
is the new school guy like Sam or even Simon.

they have not seen the footage of Kevin and what he has done for flatland
or what Chase has done etc........they only seen the new and recent riders
and think they are the best ever..watch some videos people!

REALLY I AM SICK OF SEEING NEW AGE RIDERS MAKE COMMENTS
LIKE THIS AND SAY STUPID ASS SHIOOT WHEN THEY HAVE NOT
OR KNOW WHO THE PIONEERS OF FLATLAND ARE.....

YOU WANT FLATLAND KNOWLEDGE AND WANT TO KNOW SHIOOT,
WATCH VIDEOS THAT GOES BACK BEFORE 2000 AND THEN MAKE
A COMMENT! ON WHO YOU THINK IS THE BEST EVER FLATLANDERS!

TAKE IT FROM AN OLD DAWG LIKE ME..I BEEN AROUND A LONG LONG TIME!

BY THE WAY PETE B. NEEDS TO BE APPRECIATED AND RESPECTED AND NO ONE
MENTIONED HIM IN THE TOP 6 OR 7 RIDERS..LOOK HOW LONG HE HAS

Just last year everyone would have been in agreement that Chuck Norris is the best in the world, both now and ever.

Does it really matter who the best is?
It's not possible to say who is the best.

----Kevin Jones was like 3 "bests" all in a row ha-ha, but now-a-days we have new 'leaders' and innovators. There never has been and never will be a one "best" flatlander, thankfully, that's what keeps moving it forward. :)

I don't believe in best issue, yes you have the founders, the inventors, the technical gurus, and the
and the obvious riders in these areas known through western world standards, but is all that best?

There are probably bike or any wheel trick riders who do stuff around THE World that are unknown, they may not even know what they are doing is termed as flatland.
