Ares 16" gearing
« on: April 21, 2020, 09:45:51 PM »
Hey guys, new member here. Always wanted to get into flatland riding when I was younger but never did.

Just bought an Ares 16" STN for my 7 year old on ebay.

I know the bike should come with a 28t chainring as standard, but this one has a 39t one. Is he going to struggle to ride it? I'm sure that would be fine for long distance rides, but surely that's not ideal for flatland riding? I dont want him to struggle or else he might lose interest fast!  ::)

Thanks in advance

Matt

Welcome to GF!Of course the gear ration should not be too big because it should be easy to "ride away" after a trick. But I think it is not so important.
What is the sprocket size? 16T Freewheel?

Hey DaddyCool, thanks for the welcome. Yes I believe it is the standard 16t freewheel. Do you agree that a 39t sprocket is too big?

Hi Matt,
let's calculate: I run 22/9=2,44... and the wheel perimeter is roughly 1,6 m. So I ride about 3,9 m per crank rotation. With 39/16=2,4375 and 16*2,54*pi=1,28 m you would have 3,12 m per crank rotation. So I would say not too bad. But maybe a little less would be good. Less than 32T could be a little too much.

Hey DaddyCool
That is a great help! I will see how he gets on with the 39t and if it needs it I will buy something slightly smaller! Thanks

I will post up some pics when it arrives and see what you guys think!  B)

You have to decide whether you want him to ride or do flat. The tall gear is to actually get out and ride and keep up with adult bikes, the flatland gearing makes travelling frustrating to the point of exhaustion.
