Reusing bottom bracket cups
« on: November 15, 2019, 06:06:49 PM »
Can bottom bracket bearings, say from a mid style bottom bracket, be tapped out/removed from a frame and then reused in another frame? Or do you think the stress of removing them necessitates replacing? I've never tried to tap out a bottom bracket cup, so I'm not sure how damaging the process is.

Thanks

modern frames don't use cups anymore, but i've used the same bottom bracket bearings on multiple frames with no issues.

Yes, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to say cups.  I meant to say removing the bearings and reusing them in another frame.

Thanks.

I always reuse BB bearings, but never reuse headset bearings

Why not reuse headset bearings? Even with the whole integrated/campy/whatever its called bearings?

Yes absolutely due to this system because according to the Chris King editorial, the bearing fitting into the headtube and seating perfectly is crucial to the performance of the integrated headset over time. Any imperfections could cause an issue with tolerances where it would oscillate and wear the machining of the headtube. So in my opinion one way to avoid complications long term ie bearing looseness would be to always use a new bearing in that critical area of the frame.

Ok thanks Metalbmxer, that makes sense. I'll be using new headset bearings then instead of reusing them.
