Shorter Cranks or Smaller Pedals
« on: May 01, 2017, 08:51:25 PM »
Hi Guys,

I'm looking for some input. I ride a WE Bicycles Equation frame with an 18" tt and 12.75 cs.  I'm running 160mm Odyssey Twombolt cranks and Twisted pedals. I'm looking for a little more foot clearance (I'm short and have small feet. While shorter cranks would get the clearance, smaller pedals would be the cheaper place to start. I'm curious what others are running and any recommendations.

Thanks for the help.

Chris

I once used some mini pedals from Wellgo, it worked but they were not very comfortable to stand on.

yeah they are the wellgo Nano pedals. I pedaled all around town with them. not too bad. might be worth a shot!

I used this particular model - LU-P16, they were the smallest and lightest pedals in their catalog.
(92 х 85,5 х 29,5 mm - 292g)
I got them at the time because I wanted to reduce as much weight as possible.
They don't make this model anymore.

In there current catalog you have the LU-P21 and LU-P17.

The downside is the spindels are Boron and not Cromoly.

the LU-P17 was the "wellgo nano" that pat @ flatlandfuel used to sell which I rode. never had a single issue with the spindles

Thanks for the input.

Do you have any insight on shorter cranks?  I'm trying to look all aspects of the drivetrain. How will a 145mm of 150mm crank effect the feel?

Thanks

Chris

You d better buy some moto pedals. Those wellgo are very small and not good for pedal tricks.
I removed them the first week.

I ran 165mm cranks with 12.5" chainstays in the past with no problems.

Is this a new setup? You might find that you just get used to it over time.

If you are still having problems I can't imagine smaller pedals will help much. You really need to bite the bullet and buy shorter cranks.

I'm also short (5'5"), but a decent-sized foot. I have an Ares Contrast, which has a very short tt of 17.8". I was running 175 length,  but had the same issue as you do now. I found some 140mm arms, and wil be going back to them shortly. I can tell you now that you will feel VERY cramped with super-short arms. You may have to switch out your bars to adjust, or you just may hate it altogether.

I'm about 5,5 too and ride an 18.5" Ares with 145mm cranks. I ride about 3 miles to my spot (23/9 gearing) and back and it's ok to me. I guess it depends what type of riding you do. The cranks do feel hilariously small for a little while, but i can't imagine riding with any longer cranks or my toes would hit the front wheel and heels on the back pegs. Is that what you mean by wanting more foot clearance? If so, no, smaller pedals will not help that because your feet are still gonna be in the same place. Smaller pedals stay out of your way on some tricks, thats about their only advantage.
