front hub on the back wheel
« on: June 17, 2016, 12:43:50 AM »
hi,
I want to build a wheel with a front hub and use it as a backwheel (I will be chainless).
the problem is that I couldn't find a front hub which has a long enough axle for backwheel dropouts (there's left only a few millimeters of threads on the axle for the locknuts inside the pegs).

do you know anyone else who rides like that? what kind of hub he/she uses?
any suggestions?

please don't try to convince me to buy a Freecoaster, thats another story :P

Thanks.

You could use a female axle front hub that uses 3/8" 24 thread bolts, then just go to a hardware store and get longer bolts. Hope this helps.

thanks, actually I thought about it but the dropout spacing on the back is much larger than the front and those front female hubs are designed for 100mm fork spacing.

freewheel hubs are hard to find and most cassets are female 3/8 with 14mm inside. and are not so cheap. I wanted a front hub with 3/8 axle so it will be light.

Plus, front hubs has less internals so they are lighter and easier to maintain

but a rear cheap one is certainly an option.

Thanks.

Hi
how many spoke holes you need there?

Yes that's true that front hub widths are narrower than rear hubs. Just use spacers to fill in that space. I believe it's about 3/16" on each side.

masonmar, you are right.
but remember that the axle is a lot shorter so there's not enough threads for the axle nuts inside the pegs.

48 hubs are really hard to find nowadays!

I'm sure you can find a fixed gear rear hub, easy and cheap, without the freewheel it's as light as it gets.

They are mostly 24, 32 or 36 holes, but there are actually some 48 hole ones.

For example, you have the Origin 8 SS-1100 rear hub, comes in 48 holes, sealed, 10mm axle, 120mm spacing, but it's not that cheap.. google it and search for the cheapest price.

Ok, I took my front wheel which is a KHE geisha light.  I used three 1/16" thick washers on both sides to fill in the space.  The bolts that came with the hub are long enough for all the spacing and pegs, but you could always get longer bolts.  I have attached a pic.
