searching for freecoaster please help
« on: February 27, 2015, 08:56:42 AM »
I am looking for a free coaster hub 48h( ideally) 14mm  with a 13/14t drive ... Possible down to a 12t. Does this exist?  Possibly any of the newer currently made free coaster that all run 9T drives can they be switched to a larger drive more like 12-14. I can't run any of the micro gears that are all the rage now due to frame I run ( old standard shaman) has chain stay 990's n chain stays/drop out rubbing issues w/ those tiny gears, lowest I'd like to run comfortably is 36T . Please if have any info on a hub/wheel that would work for me let me know. Want to her back on my bike so badly haven't been able to ride in about 9 yes due to breaking my back( at work) horribly bad ( took 2 yra to walk again) but numerous surgeries  have gotten me somewhat better :)  and all I want to do is ride again. Please point me in right direction

Hi,

first of all I would like to wish you the best for your health! I hope your back will be ready to ride.

About the freecoaster: 9T is very common today, it is hard to find anything else. For KHE-type freecoasters (a lot of companies use the internals from KHE with their own hub shell) you might find a 11T driver, but more was never produced as far as I know.
All the hubs use one piece drivers today, so you can not change the sprocket but only the whole driver. I no driver with more teeth was produced, you do not have a chance. Maybe a good mechanic can weld a bigger sprocket onto one of these drivers, but I haven't seen this and I doubt that it can work properly (a welded sprocket that gets loose can cause a lot of pain by the way).
If you could find one of these
http://www.global-flat.com/parts/part/232
it would be a solution, because here a removable threaded sprocket (min. 13T) was used. But the hub itself does not work as good as the modern ones (this one is more than 10 years old).
Maybe you can find a Taska hub. The older ones also had threaded sprockets as far as I know.
In general 48H is also hard to find nowadays (but they are cheap because of less demand).

Could you weld brake mounts on the seat stays to have more space for a small sprocket? Or do you also have to less space for the chain at the dropouts?

Good luck.

If you have suffered a serious injury in the past, then I would be very careful in picking a new free coaster.
Much of the specs you seek are not implemented into modern design. And older designs were much less reliable, and more likely to fail.

One idea would be to look for an OG suntour coaster. And see if you can get the driver welded to the cog.

Another idea would be to see what comes out next month from profile in terms of their z coaster.
There may be a chance to be able to swap out the driver for different sizes, if it uses a stock profile driver.

If you are had problems with your back in the past, I would suggest you the following.
 1. Buy yourself a new frame which is lighter (Shaman is a heavy and old frame, i know its a great frame, but you won't find any "new model" Coasters that will work proper with that style of gear anymore)
 2. With a new frame you have the opportunity to use a modern coaster, which is lighter, works proper without much maintance and by saving lots of weight your back will be thankful, too.
Sorry for my bad (german) english.......

You could use something like this for the future....

Frame alternatives.....

You're much better off with a modern light-weight bike.

Even if you put all modern light weight parts on that frame it's going to end up 2kg heavier.

I would suggest you sell that frame on ebay or bmx museum and buy something modern.
