So I figured out

What those sweatbands on stems I've seen in videos are all about.  It became immediately apparent about a half second after kneeing the bracket on the back of my swiss miss bars like I was trying to knock them out in the first round.  Put me down for one.

ahh yes.....
my first 6 months riding...
cracked my knee on one of them st martin X stems.... sharp edged crap.
actually split my knee. put a hefty stain on a good pain of jeans to.... lots of blood...
couldn't ride for about 2 months...

Yep same here first bike was a khe equilibrium with Swiss miss bars and sh*t that hurt :-(

It was about 3 1/2 years ago and I can still remember that PAIN

Sounds like everybody gets there eventually.  For reading as much as I did before getting a bike you'd think I would've run across that.  Maybe I did and my 1980s mentality blocked out anything that looked like safely gear.

Like 30 seconds after I did it there was a half ping pong ball size welt on my knee.  Was a little hard to walk for a few, but I figured I'd hop back on.  Shortly thereafter the SECOND one in that spot made me lay down and contemplate life and the choices I made for a minute.
