URGENT: NYB Japan or Cult Freecoaster UPDATE
« on: October 26, 2013, 07:53:07 AM »
Making an order over the weekend and need some advice. I like the design improvements of both hubs, but am not so sure about the availability of parts for the NYB Japan hub.

I ride both front and back wheel and am very hard on my bike. So far I've been on 2 different bamboo hubs, but today snapped the axle and mangled the driver. Would the female axle on the Cult be preferred? Thanks for the help!

Probably the cult with 3-parts axle. Both hubs run highly complex and customized parts that are not available off-the-shelf from specialty bearing or bicycle shops. Cult is an American company and has American distribution networks, probably easier to get the hub warrantied or replacement parts/spares.

those are 2 very different hubs...
having said you are hard on wheels, why not try that new Cult hub? It is made with high impacts in mind..

UPDATE:

Thanks to smsabb, K. Wong, and out~riding for the input.

I ended up selecting the NYB 14mm because of the low weight (16.6oz) and durability of the design. The Cult hub male axle version weighs about a 1/2 lb more (24oz) and I had my doubts about the bearing durability--and to be quite honest, couldn't fathom putting "street" parts on my bike!

I will post an update in the next few days about my first impressions with the hub. I am lacing it to an Ody Aerospace with Gsport nipples, and DT spokes.
