I learned x-foot hitchhikers by just practicing switch foot Karls until I could do them comfortably enough to swing my balance leg behind the other onto the opposite peg. For me it was a process of dialing the switch foot balance, crossing, learning to bail, then letting my weight onto the opposite peg and relearning to balance as I would double footed.

To answer your question directly I advise picking a position you can already coast with both feet on the pegs and dialing in the entry switch footed. The rest will naturally come to you when you dial in that first part.

Pretend your feet aren't crossed. Just feel out the point as if you are rolling normally.

Wear shorts and you will learn em fast. That's what I did.
The pain of burning your legs each time is enough not to f it up.
Also stand on you tippy toes with your legs crossed when brushing your teeth etc.
Muscle memory.
