My bike is on a diet
« on: August 21, 2012, 03:16:21 PM »
So i just started to want to ride my bike more and noticed alot mainly the weight. So i decided to look at parts for sale and see what i can get lighter. Here is my setup:

frame-2009 Hoffman Strowler 18.75"
fork-Zion Luna uncut
headset-united
bars-S&M intrikat uncut
Grips-odyssey
lever-odyssey monolever
brake-odyssey evo2
cranks-flatware twombolts
sprocket-flatware rhode island
chain-kmc basic
seat-khe watanabe
post-odyssey intac
pedals-ares nylon
tires-odyssey frequency g steel bead 1.85
f wheel- vandero2/quadrant custom
r wheel- generix taska/quadrant custom
pegs-gsport plegs

the parts i saw i can make the biggest difference on is a new frame is 1 pound or more.
the klyte 1.75 frequency can also save a pound, tree balsa pegs can give 6 ozs.

if you see anything else that i could save weight on let me know but the wheels im not changing since i just had them built.

I don't suggest spending $$ just to make your bike lighter. It will make your wallet lighter, but that's about it.

Have you weighed it? I bet it's lighter than you think.

Alllll in your head.

Tho if you really want to that frame weights a ton from what I remember. You'd notice the most difference there due to weight distribution (Which has ALOT more to do with how heavy a bike feels than people realise.)

Other than that most parts are competitive in terms of their weight and to spend $$$ to save grams is pure lunacy.

Example klyte tyres are like what - $40? That's $80 on a product that will wear out in a month if you ride semi-seriously on any surface other than sheet glass.*

Primo comets weight less and are a better tyre anyway.

*Slight exaggeration, but you get the point.

Go for the 1.75 klyte freqG. They lasted me a year. All depends on your style. I rarely scuff but ride miles/day.

well some of the parts im getting i need different of like the frame i can save a pound and i think i could use a different type of geometry. and the pegs i could use some longer pegs and metal ones that dont flex. and the tires with the 1.75 width would make a difference with how the bike carves and stuff i think.

Plegs are awful. Just pick up some trees or something and live with the rest. Maybe change to a 3/32 chain since despite all the odds they hold up. Gotta get sprockets/rear cogs to fit them though.

Without spending big bucks on a lighter frame & fork theres not really an awefull lot you can change. Most of the stuff you have on your bike is top spec & pretty light already. As mentioned just get some Tree pegs & maybe some KHE tyres & those Twiggy inner tubes.

Also, 1.85s are going to be significantly heavier than even 1.75, so the jump to a KHE in the rear, or just switching to Klyte 1.75 would be substantial.

JUST RIDE DAMN IT

worry about weight down the line and I rode
a 24.5 LB bike for awhile and then rode a 19.75
LB bike!

get the basics down and then worry about weight!

I noticed my riding is being effected by the weight it's super heavy when trying the lift the back whining trying to bust a hang 5 and I rode DLKs bike which is super light I noticed a huge difference. My plan is:

Frame- flatware waltz v1 or v2 which will drop a whole pound and has a better geo

Pegs-tree balsa there stiffer better life and are grippy which will save half a pound

Tires Im looking at the klyte 1.75 frequency gs which will save half a pound

So three upgrades which will help with riding and save weight is a win win

When I had my Suelo V3 built up, it was mostly aluminum and titanium for the majority of the bike. 18lbs flat, it was awesome having something that light, but my god was it ever twitchy. Back up to 21lbs with the Sick Child and it's back to feeling comfortable again. (Not that I ride the damn thing anymore)
