14mm hubset for new bike
CatWeasle:
G'day,
I'm a flatlander from back in the day-> 1996-2001
Just checking in here for the first time.
I'll rebuild my bike(KHE CatWeasle) tomorrow,
but tonight I am looking at the new gear out there.
I have come across the new KHE Greyhound freecoaster,
but don't want 10s into aluminium.
What do you guys think about the KHE Reverse street freecoaster?
--if I build a new machine.
The advantage over my old SunTour coaster I am looking for is the amount of crank it takes to thread the mechanism. ATM, it takes a good 2/5 of a crank. Is this new gear better than that?
Loving a 14mm shaft-I have to get some new 10 mm axles coz they are bent on my bike.
Any one riding the Reverse?
Cheers and hope yous r finding the links sweet
edit-I have brought up the front hub later in the thread
K.Wong:
get nankai bamboo 14mm axle version instead?

Hi CatWeasle,
that is great to hear! I still have my old CatWeasle frame in the basement... Please post pictures of the built up bike!
Have you already milled the dropout? They are for 10 mm axles, aren't they?
You can adjust the gap of most of the freecoasters. The KHE Astern which is basically the same like the Reverse even has a mechanism where you can adjust the gap without disassembling the hub.
You can adjust the gap of the other hubs by putting in/removing spacers. The reverse is delivered with three. Three spacers means less gap, zero spacers means a lot of gap (about 90 ° I guess, minimal is more like 10 °, depending on your gear ratio).
The first version of the Reverse had problems with the bearings. The later version called "Reverse ACB" has better bearing.
Federal and Alienation are offering the same hub with a different hub shell. The V2 in both cases is basically the same as the Astern and these have also the better bearings.
I have a Federal V2 and a Reverse ACB on two bikes for about two years and have no problems at all. I can recommend both hubs. I do not run my chain super tight, this may cause some problems. But normal chain tension should be ok.
CatWeasle:
The drops on my Catweasel are milled at 14mm. I have Static chain tensioners in there that pack them in to 10.
That's interesting about the adjustment of the mating of the screw.
I was looking at the Astern just now, might be a good option.
I will definitely get the version 2 of the Reverse/Federal/Alienation if I go with it.
Thanks for the heads up 8D
Do you use the Nankai K?
I will have a look at it, TY!
This hub would be for a new bike,
if I enjoy the flat, I'll get the new sealed bearings everywhere.
Should be easier to ride, as everything will be more free.
Sure, I'll post some pics, I decided not to disassemble it anyway, just need a new inner tube. I'll put the shots up in the appropriate forum category.
Enjoy the ride!
edit: Got my bike going!-need some softer brake blocks though. That's sweet u still have that CatWeasel! Mine was smoked chrome originally. I can take some shots tomorrow. The coolest components are the Graveyard chainwheel and LoveGoat pegs. I get puffed so quickly, but hopefully can get fitter eh.
Cheers 8D

I have only used KHE coaster, starting with the very old 10 mm one. Before the Geisha came out most of the riders used Nankai, some like it till today. As far as I know you have to adjust it very properly and maintain it by disassembling it every few month to regrease it. If you know how to deal with it and do not hesitate to do some service, I can be a good option. The ball bearings seem to be very strong, that is what some people prefer. But as I mentioned the bearing of the V2 KHE/Federal/... coasters (including the Astern) are strong enough I think and the roll a little smoother I guess.
I have had my Catweasle powder coated in beige. I wanted a look similar to the old Homeless Soul Bro frame. Maybe I will build it up in the future with some old parts I can find...
