How do you deal with a setback?
« on: April 18, 2012, 02:26:18 PM »

I've been practicing this certain trick for over a year now. About three months ago, it finally started to click a little and then I really started keeping track of my progress.

Overall over the following next two months I noticed that I made continuous progress with the trick, completing x attempts in a half hour. I almost doubled my completion rate. Now, about two months later, I have suffered a setback and have lost all my progress and am back to pulling the trick with the same frequency as two months ago.

I am pretty depressed about it and it is really frustrating. I tried taking a break and starting again, but that did not work. How do I deal with this?

Thanks

You're doing the same thing over and over without really analyzing what's going wrong. Where are you falling, at what point are you stepping out of the trick, why is your momentum stopping?

Those are the kinds of questions you have to seriously ask yourself if you expect any real results.

Yeah. You can seriously get to the point where you are just practising your mistakes.  >:D  I've definitely done that.

Thanks a lot for your responses. Actually I have analyzed it quite a bit. I know what is going wrong. I have a diary and take notes and write down already what works and what does not work, what my experiences were on a particular day, etc etc

Sometimes you have to not just know what you have to do, you also have to be able to do it. Also you have to be able to do it even if everything does not happen perfectly.

In my original post I wrote that I had a noticed improvement after a lot of work. Now I have lost that improvement. That is what I need help with.

Any ideas?

I'm wondering how much muscle memory plays into this. Like your body just learns the wrong way to do something. Do you have your notes from where you were getting progression? Maybe go back and compare what you do different now compared to then? I dunno you prob have done all this. I struggle w this often. In fact it's prob what is slowing my progression up, but slowly I'm making improvements. Trick is knowing when you're going at it mindlessly vs. making conscious awareness of your focus etc. Sorry I wasnt too much more helpful but maybe I provided a different perspective? Gl man.

This is BANG ON. When you fall, you have to work backwards and look at how you fell.

One example: Did you fall forward or backwards? I find if I do a trick and fall/step out forwards a bunch of times I realize I need to lean a little further back, etc...
