how to tighten chain?
« on: June 21, 2010, 04:58:27 AM »
my chain has a bit of slack in it right now, and it's making my hub ghost pedal. in addition to that, when i slam the bike around, the chain slaps the chainstay and has chipped away some paint. do you tighten the chain by moving the wheel back in the dropouts?

Jim McKay: Hey guys. (nohomo) let me show you how to tighten up your BACKEND.

I never use a hammer. I might do a quick video to show an easier way of getting your chain tight that only took me oh i dunno 8 years to figure out.

The Deco. frames all have a built in chain tensioner, its a small allen bolt that works pretty well and you can't really see it. Pretty hidden.

i think Dragonfly did it perfect, putting it through the thick drop out.

Like the video above says, just pull back the wheel and tighten, it does help to have something in the middle to keep the wheel straight.
I don't bother with chain tensioners anymore.

EDIT: They way I tighten mine is by pulling the wheel back with my knee and tighten both sides works everytime!

yeah, i mean you can do it without the pry bar or anything, for example, but I'm old fashioned on that, and the prying is cathartic for me :)

i did it the same way as jim for years, but no i have tensioners
btw, let some air go out of your tire, that will make it more easy to align your wheel good!
otherwise its going to wobble ..

..............what? I cannot think of a single reason why you would need to align your wheel like this.

You can also try "tennis ball tight". roll and tennis ball between your chainstay and tire, roll it strait though, it will stay there while you tighten up your wheel. Then let it go and see if you can catch it before it hits the ground.
PS, if it hits the ground, your chain will loosen within two days, if you catch it, it will stay tight as long as a month!

lol, rob! ;D

somewhat new question: it says on the KHE website that the tanaka fork's brake mounts are removable. how do you do this? i know on some frames and forks they come off with an allen key. i tried that and i'm 99% sure there's no allen slot on the mounts, do you just pry them out? i really don't want to damage the fork so i'm, ONCE AGAIN, referring to advice rather than blundering in on a hunch.
