« on: September 22, 2009, 11:59:47 PM »
i have no real riding spot around my area, and was looking to buy something like this

Matthias' Special Bails Small | Large

basically some sort of big wooden circle, racking my brain trying to figure out how to get one, any ideas?

go to Home Depot or something, by some wood, build a circle deck, top it with plywood or whatnot and make sure u seal it with some sort of water repellent.
might actually be cheaper to have an area paved.
good luck.

+1  IF you are going to be staying there, paving's the way to go.
could cut out some of the cost by digging the area your self.
get some friends together, buy the beer, and put
shovels in their hands.

if you need to go with wood, talk to a carpenter or a handy person.
the deck can be boards or laminent, but it must be level and smooth.
remember that the beam size should be sufficient, don't skimp or
you will get sagging spots in just a season or 2.

they sale handy wood project blue print books at home depot and
lowe's also. that could help a lot when selecting the lumber size and strength.
Just say no to particle board. never use it for any outside project.
regardless of its protection, you will regret it in a year or 2.
hope that gets you pointed in the right direction.

make shure you test your water sealer before use on the ride surface.

thompsons water sealer kind of soaks oils in to the wood to preserve it.
when a friends dad tried to water seal his skate board half pipe
it became as slippery as a ice skating rink.

If you are going to build it yourself versus paying someone to pour a slab, wood is definitely cheaper. I know someone with a paved backyard, and I know someone who built a deck (not for flatland). Unless you know what you're doing, laying concrete is tricky enough, much less getting it level and non-wavy.

No, it's not Mr Dondios. It's Mr Dandois.
Remember, grammar is the difference between "I helped my uncle Jack off a horse", and "I helped my uncle jack off a horse".

I just started getting into flatland stuff about 3 days ago and suck so far, I blame my sh*tty bike and lack of practice.

I think I would probably go with asphalt as opposed to concrete. I wouldn't even think of wood because it would kinda look silly in the back yard, like a half pipe with no walls or something.

Asphalt is freaking expensive though! I once worked for a guy who had almost his whole backyard paved and he said it cost like $10,000.

On another note, there's a house in my area with its own tennis court on the side of the house. I'm thinking about kicking those people out and moving myself in when they're not paying attention. I'd have the net cut down in about 3 seconds. After that just hook up some lights and it will be non stop flatland for all those that are interested.

Seriously though, if that house ever goes up for sale I'd be on it real quick.

I can see you telling them, "No, I really don't need to see the inside before I buy it, it's already got a tennis court."

I know a skater that bought a house just because he was so stoked to have a good pool to ride in the backyard.

you can probaly get paving stones (cinderblocks or bricks) off ebay for cheap, or other sites where peopel give things away for free. People often rip up their gardens when they move into a new house and have nowhere to put them so it shoudl be easy to get them cheap as.
Then you jsut have to dig the ground an inch or two deep, put some small rocks or sand down and lay the cobble stones.
still learning
