How Can I Lighten My Bike?
« on: July 30, 2009, 01:36:48 PM »
I have recently built up my own custom bmx, I had a small budget but it worked. The bike is too heavy for me. When I put the forks, stem and handlebars on the frame it was light and I was happy. Then when the seat, post and wheels and everything else came on it was literally a tank. It is extremely heavy and I want to make it lighter but I don't have much money. I am thinking along the line of a new frame but that's expensive (my frame over 6lbs). My forks are 3.3lbs which i can replace. Wheels are a lot but I know my ones are obviously really heavy, I cannot afford to change them at the moment.
I've got a new WeThePeople Kevlar Seat for free which is light and comfy.
I need a new, light seatpost.
If you have any items that are cheaply priced or free then tell me and i'll see. (I don't care what condition they're in)
Also, tell me how I could make my bike lighter
Cheers
I am listening to offers in PM's too -_-

Very easily. The forks from my old GT jamie bestwick weighed 5 lbs.

Could you tell us what frame and fork you're riding with? My current frame weighs between 5-6 lbs. and my total bike weight is close to 28 lbs., which I don't have a problem with. What weight are you trying to get to?

I am running a 414 Industries Frame with some Diamondback Forks (Total weight of my bike is around 30lbs feels more) I am looking to get it down to hopefully 27lbs if it is possible.
Got any ideas?

Like I said earlier, I used to run an old pair of GT forks that weighed 5 lbs. I switched over to the suelo v2 fork and lost 2.5 lbs. You could also change your tires. I went from GT airbags to redline freaky-v tires, and now run the odyssey chase tires. I also run the suelo v2 bars, which are pretty light.

a free way to make it lighter: take off the brakes, brake levers, gyro (etc.), and the cranks, which will drop the chain and pedals as well.  scoot around until you have the money to afford lighter parts?  maybe run redline tubes as well...won't make much of a difference, though.

Or make 1cm hole to the rim, between each preddefined hole to needles.
First hole must be smaller, 3-6 mm, then make 1cm.
I saw this tutorial on internet, some streeters making this to light bike.
One wheel  = cca 120g but IDk

Diamond Crack forks...ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH

so that is so heavy and try getting some
of the new Primo forks, KHE forks or SUELO
forks as that would make the bike a lot lighter.

SAVE 1/2 POUND EASILY

also go to lighter tires.....KHE FOLDABLES OR
GOUIN'S P LITES  SAVE 2 POUNDS OR SO!

ABOUT A POUND EACH TIRE!

TRY GOING TO 36 WHEELS AND THEY HAVE SOME GOOD ONES ON
SALE AT FLATLAND FUEL AND YOUR SAVE 2 1/2 POUNDS OR SO ON
BOTH THE BACK AND FRONT WHEEL SET!

OK SO FAR YOU SAVED 5 POUNDS

LIGHTER PEGS...3-4 OUNCES
LIGHTER PEDALS...2-3 OUNCES
LIGHTER BARS....5-6 OUNCES
LIGHTER STEM...5-6 OUNCES

THAT IS ABOUT ANOTHER POUND OFF

MCNEAL SEAT/POST AND QUAMEN OR LIGHT SEATPOST
CLAMP.....SAVES 8 OUNCES

FRONT BRAKE ONLY AND TAKING ALL YOUR BACK BRAKES
OFF..SAVES 8 OUNCES

LIGHTER CRANK SET WITH TITANIUM SPINDLE..1 POUND OFF

OK HERE YOU HAVE YOUR TANK OF AN 32 POUND BIKE AND YOU
JUST TAKEN OFF 8 POUNDS TO GET IT DOWN TO 24 POUNDS.

IT IS FEELING BETTER AND YOU CAN GO BEYOND THAT IF YOU
WANT TO BY GETTING A LIGHT FRAME, LIGHTER FRONT BRAKES
ETC...... AND GET IT DOWN TO LIKE 22 POUNDS OR SO!

The Helium Balloons didn't work

Also, I am running 26 spoke wheels already, front and back. Ti cranks cost loads, I am running front brake only. Yeah I can change bars and forks
