don't throw yourself forward so hard. The motion to get the seat up should be very fluid.

someone else mentioned that, but i haven't figured how to get the back end up
without that force.
suggestions are always welcome.

Use your wrists less and slow your push down. Right now you're kind of "tweaking" the rear end into place and then keeping your arms too stiff once it's up there. Use your foot on the peg to "pull" the bike under you more and focus less on the push itself.

I always explain it as follows:

Imagine there is something out of reach and your hands are preoccupied or indisposed. The only way you can get to this item is by reaching forward with your foot and dragging it towards you. That's the feeling of popping into a hang 5. At least for me.

As far as the hang 5 goes, it looks like Havok is shifting his weight and the bars forward at the same time... my "feeling" when I do a hang 5 is to lean forward first THEN push forward on the bars. Get comfortable with the feeling of having your head and shoulders slightly forward of the bars first before pushing the bike into position. If you can, imagine the force on the peg and what direction that force is being applied; until you lean forward, there's nothing pushing "back" on the peg to allow you to pop the back end up, which is why you feel like you can't ease the back end into position. That's why you lead with your head and shoulders first. Or, at least that's what I feel like I do.

Hang 5 pop-up :  The way I learned is forget about the seat, just ease into it the position with the seat kind of hanging back (It'll be hard to roll far because the back wheel is throwing you off but it gets you used to the balance point and kind of a confidence builder).  Then I started focusing on pushing the bars enough to bring the seat up.  This is how I've learned all my tricks so far, easing into them step by step, position by position, instead of 'popping' into them.  More of a 'ease-up' at first, the 'pop-up' will come later as I advance and gain confidence. The pop-up is easily the hardest part of learning hang 5's.

@Mark - That seatgrab to karl was sweet!
