Installing a Back Brake - GYRO
« on: January 04, 2009, 10:01:15 PM »
This is straight from Dan's Comp and a better tutorial than I could have put together.  It covers 90% of what you need to know and others can add their advise from here.

Probably don't need all those tools if you don't have them but crescent wrench and wire-cutters and hammer and towel for bearing cups.  Get some 3-n-1 oil as well.

Might want to use knarps anyway on the top if you are running 6" bars or shorter setup.  The shortest oryg cable is still super long on my bike as is.  Either one on the lever or two at the gyro plate.

Main rules when you get here are 1) get the plate so that it is touching the bottom gyro tabs and to 2) get rid of gyro flop you adjust the bottom set of barrel adjusters L/R when bars are facing forward and top set when bars are backward.

Only other thing is the option to use the London Mod and double single cables for the lower half of the breaking system.  Cheaper to replace and easy to adjust.

I have run an F-Set as well in the past and will try to get a how-to on that for the few people that have it.  It is possible (despite the haters) to get it running and working good without breaking but takes some custom mods.

Is it possible to post a pic of the parts needed for the double cable set up?

i know I need 2 cables and so but I am not sure what more i need on the back brake self.

Asked in a different way
how is the connection between the cables and the brake?
And how do you set them up right?

Thnx

Good post, Claude. I have my rear brake set up with a traditional gyro+cables, and it is the strongest pull I've felt I ever had, and it pulls stronger than my buddies who ride with a rear brake. It doesn't click at all when the brakes are pulled and the bars are spun. I got this thing DIALED.

Rien, you need one of these, it's called a London Mod, and it screws into your standard single adjuster hole at the back end of the frame, and gives you double cables. You then just need two full length cables for the bottom of the gyro, like these http://www.danscomp.com/511030.php

Then you just put on two knarps on the ends of the cables to keep them in your brake, http://www.danscomp.com/489108.php and you're set.

That Snafu set actually comes with everything you need :) So grab one of those and you'll be set.

You can find my bike on this page.
I have 2 cable adjusters so I don't need the London mod I think

The only thing I was not sure of was the connection between the cables and the brake.

Are they really that easy to set up?
Aren't there any problems with uneven tension or such things?

Thanks for the reply Jon

It was the knarps thing I wanted to know

Peace

Yeah it's super easy to setup and allows you to dial the arms in perfectly, so there's no problem with uneven tension, I've found it to be even easier to setup than a straddle!

Grab that Snafu cable set and you'll be sorted.

Not knarps, those are different, smaller, for use in replacing the cable ends at the detangler when you cut off the little balls.

What you're looking for is "lucky bolts".

I've never ran the dual but it looks like it would have some advantages.  I will probably set it up like that on my new bike because of where the cable tab is under the toptube - too close and would make the straddle loop way down on each side of the headtube.  Where with dual I could run them at a better, straighter length.  Seems like Dual would save you $ in the longer run too with just single replacement cables.  I think it will be a little trickier to dial in but couldn't be that hard.

Do you have the London Mod part?

No I do not. I would have to buy one.I do have a stradle cable off of my sons bike.He had me remove the gyro and cables because he is running a single cable to the rear brakes.

Couple questions -

I'm about to do the dual cable set-up (Dual Upper and Lower)  I had my LBS do my Dual Cable Set-up on my 1st ride, but I have a feeling the lower cables might be too long. They loop down and then come back up and he had them zip tied to the DT where the cables go into the London Mod Adjuster. Is this too much slack? (I'll take pics and edit this post)

Also, Can I actually put knarps on the upper cables from my M2 Modulever and shorten them? Shorter is more optimal yes? Thx in advance guys!
