to bmx or not to bmx (update)
« on: August 25, 2008, 11:09:17 PM »
well as alot of u kno im ill, ect ect today i went to the hospital and found out that it was tb i had, but i had a form of tb that attacks the nervouse system, it has destroyed most of the nerves in my right arm, and when i get an op i will loose about 70% or movement in my arm, the infection has also spread to my spine, this answers alot of questions for having a sore bck and my legs giving way.
Just by luck no majour damage there, ill be on medication for that..
thing is i dnt kno wat to do when it comes to riding....im rite handed and i can barly carry a bag o sugar.

should i give up biking for health reason
or
built a bike that is really lite (eg no cranks lite parts)

thing is if i gave up biking allway be like omg why and all that looking at pics of bikes and vids of riding (kinda like waving a hamburger in frnt of a fat child)

sorri for my rant but im confused rite now a bit dwn.

I reckon you should ride m8. Get ya ops out the way then concentrate your efforts where they are needed in physio etc. Take things one step at a time, conquer one part of your situation at a time. Set yourself attainable goals and sooner or later.. you get there mon.

I have terrible wrists.   I cant hardly squeeze anything.
like a brake lever.   it takes all I got to grab a front brake with enough power
to make an endo for me.  and I could only do it 3 times before my wrist is dead.

years of skateboarding and being a stupid kid has left me with both my wrists broken more times than I can count,   and my doctor said he would not try corrective surgery on them for all the money in the world ,  as they are one gigantic mess of shattered bone mass that is fuzed together now.

that being said,   the human body is able to cope with alot of things.

and I ride every day.
and my wrists both hurt a bit,   but I can deal with it.
as I love riding.

both of my bikes are brakless,  as why would I need them if I can even squeeze a lever,
and both of my bikes are sub 20 pounders,   and it has helped prolong my riding sessions having to not lug around a tank of a bike on dead arms.

also riding styles can change,   like the other day,  I was doing hang 5 one handed,  using my front peg foot,   leg proped up against the grip,  and that held the bars steady enough for me to let go with that hand.
I find that I use my legs to  do most of the work for my perticular style of riding,
and thats fine for me.
im not trying to be a flatlanding pro or anything.
but im hyped on riding,  and dont want to ever give it up.

have you seen those crazy dudes with only like 1 leg and a crazy prostetic piece that do running ( marathon running style )   one leged runners who are bad asses.
nothing can stop human determination.

one more thing,   a side note realley:
both my bikes use swiss miss handlebar.  they are light weight and feel nice
on dead arms.  ahha.   seriously,  I like em.  and cant realley ride any other handlebar.
give swisses a try if you get the chance to.

Scottie...  Low blow man.  Illness sucks in any form, but when it threatens what you love, it sucks even worse.  When I was told my elbows were 'playing up' after lots of heavy lifting, etc at work and home, I thought I would have to stop riding.  I can't imagine how you you feel at the mo...

Stick with it man!  I've known two guys (Both called Bandit), who were born with shortened right arms, and they both rode better than me on street, ramps and park.  Hell, one of them rode a big old 1200cc rat bike too!

Here's to a steady recovery after treatment, a light bike, and lots of fun riding!
More off than on, but still loving it! Flatland until you can't!

Keep riding if its what you enjoy. You will need a lighter bike if you have limited strength in your arm though.  You can build an 8 kg bike with parts readily available on the market.
Get well soon.

Ali is my good m8.  ;D

Keep riding man. Sounds like you will need some physical therapy anyway. May as well be doing something you enjoy while re-building your strength. A friend of mine in North Middleton got TB about 5 years ago. It's no joke for sure.
