IMO the best rims are made by odyssey. I have been running 7Ks for years now with zero problems.  as far as spokes go, everything flatland fuel sells is quality so just choose one that fits your budget or color choice.

Both the ones with Sun rims or Alienation are quite good.

Right now I'm running a WTP Pi front hub with a Primo 7005 rim
with the rear I've got a Sun RLite welded rim & a Federal 11t freecoaster.

Both are laced with steel spokes & are good for flat or street.
Pretty light too, compared to my old wheelset.

I always see video of Japanese Flatland, but what's the social scene like?
All the DJ's I've met from Japan have spent like 2 years practicing in their rooms
before they even think about playing infront of others.

Is it harder to learn without help/support from other riders when you begin,
or is militant practice on your own enough to get good?

Scene in Japan is pretty cool. Like i said earlier, 2 guys from Nakoya(mainland japan) came down last week.. Bobby Carter of DiversionTV came out with Fat Tony from ridebmx.com came out a month or two ago.. I dont know how it is in the states because i didnt start flatland until i came to Japan but I cant imagine its too different.. Because of their culture you dont have the show of EGO's that other countries have so you dont have that billy badass mentality.
As far practice.. Im a beginner myself, so i can only speak for myself.. In the very beginning i would pratice with this japanese kid. He would practice by himself everyday he didnt have to work from 3:00pm to about 9pm. He only had a part time job so he would practice like that around 4 times a week and then just practice every other when he got a chance in the morning or the night. Dropped out of school, so work and flatland was his life.. lol.. now he rides street/ramp and focusing all his attention on that the same way.. just trying to get good... So i guess Flatland is mostly a loner sport but it feels good when you can get together and ride with friends and like thinking individuals..
