Ticos Jam 5 report in RideBMX
« on: July 23, 2008, 05:08:27 AM »
Probably some of you have read this article and have found a lot of negativity. I'm not the kind of person who likes to make troubles out of nothing, but when someone puts a lot of negativity in one's culture, then there's a problem. I met Fat when he came here and thought he was a very cool person. I actually helped him to find a place to stay (Pino's house). I really didn't know Pino's place was a mess; however, Pino was very positive about helping all the foreign riders. Well, today I got some printouts of the article and there are some things I'd like to clarify. The first thing that pissed me off is where it says "by the grace of a high power, there was a cement soccer field at a high school right next to our hotel --the only flat surface in miles." Ok, Costa Rica, in contrast to the popular believe, IS NOT a jungle. We have plenty of spots to ride. My town, which is on the way to Samara (the beach they visited), has a veeeery big and beautiful spot to ride flatland, check it out: http://www.global-flat.com/spots/254. Second thing, we DO HAVE good restaurants and very nice people who are willing to take your orders and give you a very good service. You can find bad waiters and waitresses everywhere, not only here so why is that so important to mention in a prestigious BMX magazine? Third thing: "We began to see a pattern of the village locals taking advantage of tourists in any possible way." Come on, that would be as if I wrote that Americans take advantage of everybody to get their own benefits. Can you say Operation Iraqi Liberation? Of course, not all the Americans are like that! In fact, some of the nicest people I've met are Americans, Pat Schoolen for example. Fourth thing: "the toy-like truck made it to Pino's house". Was Pino supposed to pick you up in a Hummer? I'm not going to mention all the bad things the writer talked about my friend Pino and my country in general, but seriously, next time try to be humbler and don't talk so much crap about Costa Rica. If dissing Costa Rica was not your intention, well...you did it.

Damn   The only way I could see him saying those things is if he was trying to be funny... Sure as hell doesn't come off that way. Did something bad happen while he was there?

Well, maybe, but the few Costa Ricans who read the magazine got offended. Me included. Nothing bad happened here as far as I know.

I SENT THE COPIED IN COLOR ARTICLE TO ELIAS..

MAYBE I SHOULD NOT OF... BUT YEAH I SAW THE NEGATIVITY
ALSO AND CALLED PINO UP AND WE HAD A LAUGH ABOUT
THE COACHROACHES AND ALL THE OTHER SHIOOT IN HIS
SUPPOSLEY COACHROACH HOTEL OF A HOUSE.

I SEE ELIAS POINT AND POINTED IT OUT TO HIM EARLIER AND
I BEEN TO COSTA RICA THREE TIMES AND YES IT HAS ALOT
OF JUNGLE AND THE LOWER AREA OF COSTA RICA IS MOSTLY
JUNGLE AND THE TOP PART HAS ALOT OF JUNGLE BUT NOT ALL
OF IT IS JUNGLE AS THERE IS SWAMP, MANGROVES, HILLY AREA
AND MOUNTAIN AND VOLCANO RANGES..DID YOU KNOW THERE ARE
13 VOLCANOES IN COSTA RICA AND 9 ARE ACTIVE AND 7 ARE VERY
ACTIVE VOLCANOES!  "VOLCAN ARENAL" IS ONE OF THE MOST ACTIVE
VOLCANOS IN THE WORLD BEHIND VOLCANOS IN ITALY, CHILE,
ALASKA AND JAPAN!

I HAVE TO DISAGREE WITH THE RIDING AREAS ELIAS AS COSTA RICA
RIDING AREAS ARE NOT AT ALL PAR TO THOSE IN OTHER AREAS OF THE
WORLD AND IM SORRY TO SAY TO YOU I LOOKED FOR SOMEWHERE TO RIDE
WHEN I WAS DOWN THERE AND ALL I FOUND IS SOME GHETTO LOTS COMPARED
TO WHAT I AM USE TO RIDING ON. I ENDED UP RIDING IN THIS MERCADO
AREA THEY TRADED FRUTA Y LEGUMES EN EL TARDE. IT WAS BY FAR ONE OF
THE WORST PLACES TO RIDE AND BESIDES YOU GET ALMOST TYPHOON RAINS
IN THE AFTEROONS AND EARLY MORNING WHERE IT POURS IN SHEETS FOR AN
HOUR AND HALF AND THEN THE SUN COMES OUT BUT IT IS LIKE A TORRID
DOWNPOUR.

YOU HAVE TO ALSO REALIZE ELIAS THAT YOU LIVE IN AN THIRD WORLD COUNTRY
AND I SAW ALOT OF BEGGERS, PEOPLE SELLING STUFF AND ALOT OF THINGS
YOU WOULD NOT SEE HERE SO I BET FAT TONY GOT A LITTLE SHOCKED FROM
ALL OF THAT AND HOW POOR PEOPLE WERE THERE, DIRT POOR. I AM NOT IN
ANY WAY TRYING TO DEFEND TONY BUT LOOK IN HIS SHOES AND WHERE HE
COMES FROM AND EVEN NEW ORLEANS IS SECOND WORLD IN THE U.S. IN
LIVING STANDARDS, ESPECIALLY IN THE SOUTH OF THE U.S. BUT THAT IS
JUST A SHOCK AND MUST OF BEEN A SHOCK TO HIM.

I DONT THINK HE SHOULD OF WROTE THOSE THINGS AND PUBLISHED THEM IN
A MAGAZINE AS THOSE ARE THINGS BETTER KEPT TO YOURSELF OR TALKED
ABOUT SINCE YOU WERE SO NICE TO HIM AND TRY TO BE A GOOD HOST. I
WILL MENTION THAT TO HIM NEXT TIME I SEE HIM AND I THINK IT IS A BETTER
WAY TO WRITE A FLATLAND ARTICLE THAN TO CRITICISE AND PUT DOWN A HOST
COUNTRY WHEN THAT HOST IS SO NICE TO PUT THE PERSON UP!

I WOULD SURELY OF NOT DONE WHAT TONY DID AND I HAVE MORE CLASS
TO HANDLE IT A BETTER WAY! BUT..YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THE SHOCK
THING AND WHAT HE SAW PROBABLY SHOCKED HIM PRETTY BADLY AND HE
PROBABLY THOUGHT HE SAW IT BAD IN NEW ORLEANS AND THE SOUTH OF THE
U.S.

BY THE WAY
I LOVE COSTA RICA AND LOVE IT DOWN THERE DESPITE THE LACK OF
GOOD RIDING SPOTS AND TORRID TROPICAL RAIN STORMS AT TIMES!

all that I can add is that I love Costa Rica. I love the country. I love the culture. I love the people. Yeah, its waaaaay different than the USA but a wonderful place in its own way. Everyone needs to go to the Ticos Jam and visit Costa Rica. It will be a trip you will never forget.

Also, be sure to get a ride in Pino's truck. It is definitely the smallest pickup truck ever :)

Ticos Jam 6. February 2009. Start making plans.

When I got that Ride Mag and saw that article I was very confused... I read it 2 - 3 times and then... I was pissed off!
I met Fat at the before the Ticos Jam, I know he's a great guy but like Mutt said, maybe he was trying to make a funny report about Costa Rica, and he did not know that maybe that thing can offend the Costa Rican riders and why not not, the latin american riders.
We live in a 3rd world country, that's true, we do have a lot of jungle but also we have beautiful cities too... and many spots for flatland and street ridding...
I really don't know what to say... I'm so confused...
I think Manuel and I must have to give more info to the foreign riders about the places they will visit before the Ticos Jam date, so they can figure out what is a BEACH here and don't imagine that they will go to a big city like L.A for example...

By the way... Ticos Jam 6 will be next February 8th!

TO MIKEY, ELIAS AND PINO AND THE REST OF THE COSTA RICA
RIDERS................

I AM SORRY THAT TONY SAID THOSE THINGS AND HE,  I DONT THINK
MEANT TO MAKE IT LOOK BAD OR MAKE COSTA RICA LOOK BAD AND
I WILL TALK TO HIM NEXT TIME I SEE HIM AND YES COSTA RICA IS
A PLACE OF ITS OWN AND THE ONLY LARGE CITY IS REALLY SAN JOSE
BUT EVERYHTING ELSE ARE VILLAGES OR SMALL TOWNS NESTLED
IN JUNGLE, HILLS, MOUNTIANS OR UNDERNEATH VOLCANOS(VOLCANS).

IT IS OBVIOUS THAT TONY HAS INSULTED AND HURT ALOT OF YOUR FEELINGS
WHAT WAS PRINTED IN THE RIDE MAGAZINE AND I CAN TELL YOU THAT THE
COUNTRY IS NOT FULL OF BEGGERS, PEOPLE TRYING TO GET ONE OVER ON
AMERICANS OR TOURISTS.  THAT IS JUST A SMALL THING AS YES IT IS
THERE AND LOCALS DO THAT AS WHEN I WAS THERE PEOPLE MOBBED THE
BUS I WAS ON, TRYING TO SELL ME STUFF ETC AND IT WAS SORTA FUNNY
AND SAD IN A WAY. BUT COSTA RICA IS A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY AND FOR
A PERSON TO GO DOWN THERE FOR THE FIRST TIME AND SEE SUCH POVERTY,
DIRT POOR PEOPLE AND THE LIVING SITUATION COULD BE VERY MUCH A SHOCK.

I WOULD RECOMMEND GOING TO THE NEXT TICO JAM AS IT WILL BE SOMETHING
YOU WILL NEVER FORGET AND PLEASE GET IN YOUR MIND THAT COSTA RICA IS
A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY AND BE PREPARED TO SEE THINGS YOU NEVER THOUGHT
COULD BE SEEN THERE AS IT CAN BE A CULTURE SHOCK AT FIRST SO YOU DONT
GO BACK AND MAKE COMMENTS  OR ARE SO SHOCKED THAT YOU DONT WANT TO GO
BACK TO COSTA RICA BECAUSE OF WHAT YOU SEE IN THE DIRT POORNESS AND
POVERTY THERE! YA ALL SHOULD GO BACK MANY TIMES OVER!

BUT COSTA RICA IS ALSO ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFULEST COUNTRIES IN THE
WORLD WITH ITS LAS SELVAS (JUNGLES), LA PLAYAS(BEACHES), EL CUIDADES
(CITIES) WITH ITS MULTI COLOR BUILDINGS IN SHADES OF AMARILLO, ROJO,
AZUSE, VERDE ETC AND I THINK LATIN AMERICAN HAS THE MOST VARIATION
OF COLOR IN THEIR BUILDINGS IN THE WORLD.

THERE IS ALSO THE MASS AMOUNT OF WILDLIFE WITH FOUR SPECIES OF
MONKEYS..MONO TITI, MONO COLORADO, MONO CARA BLANCA AND
MONO CONGO....AND THE LIST GOES ON WITH PECCARI, 12 SPECIES
OF PARROTS AND MACAWS, TWO SPECIES OF SLOTHS(GOTTA TO SEE
THAT CRITTER..FUNNY LOOKING), ANTEATERS, AMARILOS, WHITE
NOSED COATIS WITH THEIR RINGED TAIL IN THE AIR...SORTA REMINDS
ME OF MEERKAT MANOR OF SORTS AS THEY ARE VERY FAMILY
\ORIENTATED, 5 SPECIES OF CATS IN JAGUARUNDI, OCELETS, MARGAY,
PUMAS OR MOUNTIAN LIONS, AND THE BIG CAT, JAGUARS.

COSTA RICA ALSO HAS A BIG RODENT CALLED AGOUTIS AND IT IS LIKE
SEEING AN RAT THE SIZE OF A DOG AND IT IS SOMETHING TO SEE AND YOU
CAN SEE THEM ALL THRU THE MOUNTAIN RANGES AND JUNGLES AREAS AND
I SAW QUITE A FEW IN MONTE VERDE IN THE NORTH/CENTRAL MONUTAIN
RANGE!

YOU LIKE CROCS, MAN DOES COSTA RICA HAVE CROCS AND IF YOU GO
ON THE PACIFIC SIDE TO THE BRIDGE GOING OVER THE TARCOLES RIO,
THRE ARE SOME BIG ARSE CROCS THERE AND THEY ARE AMERICAN
CROCODILES WHICH CAN REACH 12-14 FEET LONG AND THERE ARE ALSO
SOME ALBINO CROCS THERE TOO. THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF CROCS
THERE IN COSTA RICA AND TWO ARE ALLIGATOR GENUS IN SPECTACLED
CAIMAN AND THE BLACK CAIMAN AND OFCOURSE THE AMERICAN
CROCODILE AND CONFUSING AS IT IS THEY ARE ALL THREE CALLED
"LAGARTO" BY THE TICO LOCALS.

OYE THAT ONE BIG SHELIA OVER THERE, OYE CROC!

WAIT TIL YOU SEE THESE CRITTERS...LEAF CUTTER ANTS AND YOU GO
INTO ANY JUNGLE AREA AND YOUR SEE LEAFS MAGICALLY GOING UP A TREE
AND THINK..WHAT THE $@%#. THE LEAF CUTTER ANTS CARRY LEAFS THAT
THE ANTS HAVE CUT OFF BY THEIR TEETH AND CARRY THEM OVER LOGS,
ROCKS AND UP TREES AND IT IS SOMETHING ELSE TO SEE. THERE IS ALSO
THE FEARED AND STINGING ARMY ANTS THAT GOES ACROSS THE JUNGLE
FLOOR IN THE HUNDREDS AND MAYBE IN THE THOUSANDS AND YOU HAVE
TO RUN QUICKLY DOWN THE JUNGLE TRAIL AS IF YOU DONT THEN YOUR GET
BITTEN QUITE A BIT. I THINK THE INSECTS THRE ARE AMAZING AND THE
STICK INSECT THEY HAVE THEIR IS LIKE 1 FOOT LONG AND IS LIKE SO LIGHT
THAT YOU CAN PRETTY MUCH LOOK THRU IT AND THE BLUE MORPHO BUTTERFLIES
ARE VERY COLORFUL AND THEY HAVE MANY COLORFUL INSECTS THERE IF
YOU ARE INTO THAT!

THE FUNNIEST EXPERIENCE IS SITTING ON THE PACIFICA SIDE OF COSTA RICA
AT SOME BAR.RESTARANTE AND SEEING IGUANAS PLAYING ON THE ROOF TOP AND RUNNNIG ACROSS AND JUMPING ROOFTOPS AND THESE ARE BLACK SPINED IGUANA
OR CTENSAURUS AS THE LOCALS CALL THEM AND THEY ARE NOT AS BIG AS THE
IGUANA IGUANA OR GREEN IGUANAS, YOU ALSO FIND IN COSTA RICA! THEY ARE
VERY AGILE LIZARDS AND YOU TALK ABOUT WEIRD LIZARDS, THE JESUS CHRIST
LIZARD OR BASILISK LIZARD ACTUALLY WALKS ON WATER WHEN FRIGHTENED OR
IS CHASING FOOD...I SAW ONE IN THE TORTUGUEROS NATIONAL PARK AND MAN
TALK ABOUT WALKING ON THE CEILING, THESE LITTLE GUYS RUN OVER WATER!

LOTS TO SEE IN COSTA RICA AND IT WILL BE THE TRIP OF YOUR LIFETIME.

BELIEVE ME!

Dude, shut up with that third-world country thing. We live in only ONE world. I hate such classification.

I agree with you Josh. Yeah sounds to me like there's just a huge misunderstanding that needs to discussed by Fat and Luis. In my opinoin Fat was trying to be funny and the expense of Costa Rica. Not what you guys wanna probably hear cause flatlanders are flatlanders no matter where they represent. Me personally, I look forward to going to the Ticos Jam. My wife and I have talked of buying down there. Hope this doesn't put Americans on the sh*t list with Costa Ricans. Hey Mike Mesa you bought a (Green) G1 Quamen from me like 6 years ago. Fat Tony needs to pm Luis and settle this for sure. Lee/Huck

I live in CR, and i only have to say something so simple, why you can visit some country and make jokes about what is the poverty here??? like say: Third world country? that phrase does not any of funny... a lot of countries have problems, and other dont have the same posibilities than other countries.... but we have some things good too, and those things are more than the bad things, why not be smart and say something about BMX, and if he want to say something funny... try to say something who everybody enjoys...
everyone here need to be carefully to say something about things like that, and if you have responsability to wrote and article in a magazine and so many people around the world will read it, you have a bunch of responsability, not is only jokes and BMX, he wrote too much....
and not is Luis Elias VS Fat, is everyone who lives here, ride here, work here.... is too much my friend... he write to everyone in the world about this
