48 holes or 36 holes?
« on: August 14, 2006, 03:00:42 AM »
Hey guys, I need your advice...

My wheel rims is Himiko Araya. Same with the rims of Matt welhilm.
For the guys didnt knw this:
It is double wall and 48 holes.

My concern is the quality of wheelset and the weight.

So, what is the advisable specs for wheel set.
Is it 48 holes or 36 holes?
Is it double or single wall?
and if possible the best brand for rims you include...

Thanks in advance....

i think 36h rims are enough for flatland and its not so important that its a single or double wall, but i would prefer a double wall rim. i like the odyssey hazard light rims. they are very good

48 holes is stronger,
some people say 36 or 32 holes is strong enough,
but is it really?
It all depends on how you ride.
If you want strong stiff wheels go with 48 holes.

hey i used 36 radial on front and it was cool for a year or so but after that the spokes started to crack and there was 1 or 2 spokes broken each time i rode. and once i broke 6 of them at a time! but i think it was because the spokes were noname and the metal tired or somethink like this. i have now 36 crossed on front and 48 crossed on the frear wheel and it's perfect and strong enough... i ride 48 spokes rear wheel because Taska freecoaster is only available in 48H but i'm seriously thinkikng about getting a Nankai and that's gonna be 36 crossed too

someone said before:
36crossed or 48 radial and that's what i think too

The amount of weight you save when using only 36s instead of 48s is negligible, whereas the gain of stability of 48s is indeed notable.

If possible, I'd always go for 48s.

However, I had to ride 36s on the rear wheel due to the freecoaster I was using. Within one and a half year I hadn't had a problem. But when I fell on the rear wheel one day, I messed up 4 spokes at once.

i use 32 khe pro wheels
and have no problems with them
36 laced save weight if you use the right rims and hubs
and tires..you can save like a full pound for each
wheel....16 ounces.

for example..nankai lite freecoaster hub with araya
7x superlites and the khe premuims tires will save
you a bunch of weight off a typical 48 back wheel set up.

the 36 are as strong as the 48 and my friend old school
george is 6"3 and 220lbs..a big mexican gorilla and he is
going 36 wheels very soon to save weight.

heya sasquatch
no time no hair your arse
lol
anyways the 48 are getting outdated now
alot are going 36 for front and back
or 32 wheels..wished flatland fuel would have
khe 32 pro  but they stopped selling those
they are good wheels with nankai freecoaster
instead of the geisha which i dont like.

wy don't you lace a four cross 36 or 32 H
im riding with 4 laced-cros and is very very strong
if you get out spokes you need more  crossings to keep rigidity

i wished they did sell the rims too
but they dont with the 32 khe rims
i would lace the nankai lite with the khe rim
and i have the ultimate back wheel
also the cost of buying just the hub and rim
and then spokes would be too much...$200.00

Again, Im not saying saying that 36 or 32 hole rims are weak, there are great rims and spokes out there,  but 48 is stonger. You cant deny it.  the weight diference is very small also.
As far as lacing goes, we have talked about it before.
Ive riden 24 spokes cross-laced front and to my surprise the rim stood up to the task !  I tried it on the rear but the result wasnt so good.
So the thing is to get a good rim and good spokes.

Hi,
I have been trying out my new 32 spoked rear Geisha wheel and it seems fine so far, apart from the whizzing sound it makes if you don't pedal back a bit, but Thomas from KHE said the sound should go atfer a few weeks of riding, but I am still not sure on the 32 strength of the actual wheel build.Has any one had any problems riding 32 spoked?

there is a big difference in weight between
a 48 wheel and 32 wheel and enough to
one balance out the bike better in front versus
back and also lose over a pound for each wheel
if you use the lighter rims, hubs..nankai lites
and one of the lighter tires like odyssey chase
or khe premuim which are very light.

there are like 4-5 really like tires that take 1 pound'
off your bike for each tire from say a heavier tire like
any primo except the comet, revenge etc....

the rim itself if lighter takes only 2 ounces between
48 spoked and 32 spoked but add those together
and that is 4 ounces or 1/4 of a pound for both
wheels. i found the lightest rim other than the araya
super 7x are the primo balance 7005 rims and laced
with a 36 nankai lite freecoater in the back and khe
pro front hub in the front is one of the lightest wheel set you
can build up. this combined with using khe premuim
tires which are 1/2 pound lighter than the odyssey
chase tire for EACH TIRE so that alone for both tires
take a full pound off your bike.

the only other lighter setup is the khe wheelset but you
have to deal with the geisha hub and i just dont trust
that hub like i trust the nankai freecoaster and i can also
get all the parts for the nankai when the geisha parts are
harder to come by.

IT IS ALL ABOUT QUALITY AND LIGHTNESS OF PARTS
AND HOW I CAN GET REPLACEMENT PARTS IF NEEDED.
THIS IS WHAT I GO BY.
