Best lube for sealed bearings
« on: June 13, 2008, 03:01:10 AM »
I generally hear references to "greasing" up sealed bearings in bmx land. Outside of bikes I've always used a thin oil or teflon lube on sealed bearings because it gets in there faster. so...on my sealed bearing hubs, is oil or grease a better lube? thanks!

I dunno about everyone else, but its best just to leave them well alone i find.

Just grease where they rest, inside of BB shell, hub etc.

Yep, you can lube up sealed bearings.  You just pop the little seal cover off and put the lube on the exposed bearings.

Basically, the heavier the lube, the longer lasting the effect it will have on the bearings.  The downside is that the heavier lube will make the bearings roll slower.  A light oil will make the bearings run faster, but I've heard road bikers say they need to add oil before every ride because it's so thin.

Personally, I've never had a need to lube up sealed bearings.

Isn't the idea of a sealed bearing not to lube?  If you do lube it you will get dust or dirt in there.  If a sealed bearing went out I just bought a new one.
Hey Meg...check this out.
