odyssey strong island pegs.
« on: March 22, 2008, 03:48:45 PM »
I just picked up my second pair from local bike shop.
I like them alot
they are super fat and wide
makes my feet feel alot more comftorble on them
so I can ride longer with out as much foot pain.
here is a pic of them.

http://coloredtuffs.com/shop/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=545

I managed to get them for $9.99  a box ( contains 2 each box )
I think my local bmx store mis makred their price some how.
cheepest on the net ive found them is $20 a pair.

and I cant seem to find them on odysseys website. - are they a new product?
or are they old and out dated?

anyhow -   I just figured id share.
I do realley like the pegs being so long and fat.
my arches in my feet have gone away a bit -  so foot pain is an issue
when riding -  and the bigger area on the pegs keeps me on the bike longer.
ride on.
im new at this but im learning.

Glad you like them, I designed them back in 1997-98. I think they were produced the same year as my seat (99er) back in 1999. I worked for odyssey for about 5years and those were two of my favorite projects. Glad to know there are still people out there enjoying and using them. I don't here too much about the pegs as they were just too big for most guys but the seat I worked on for about a year (99er) still seems to be a classic. Thanks guys.

As for the peg, they stopped making those awhile back. You may have one of the last sets.

I just got rid of those Strong Islands for the Plegs but I liked those pegs too. They are heavy though. Fit pacman drop outs nice. My riding buddy swears by those things after he rode mine. Not too many 2"X5" pegs out there.

I still got a full new set and there's still some sets floating around Ebay if you look around.

I remember wanting those pegs real bad when I built up my first 'real' flatbike in 2001...a Hoffman EP. Eventually I went with the Primo tubesteaks.

I wanted a pair of those pegs intensly badly way back when. The bikeshop I work at now has a pair in storage thats market at like 20 bucks and it'll go down. I'm thinking of getting them for the hell of it. That and they've got Camacura aluminum barends for 29.99 which will also go down. Pity I'm making my own, I would've snatched those up in a second.

Avoid at all costs. They are heavy, ugly, and oh wait did I mention WAY TOO HEAVY? They weigh more than most steel street pegs.

They are heavy.

2 pegs = 24.2 oz

Which for even FIVE YEARS AGO when they came out was stupid stupid heavy. There is no reason to have pegs designed like that.

Hey, off-topic but I when I was deciding on new parts for my bike, the 99er was my choice of seat, affordable and I hear good things bout it.  Awesome to know who worked on designing it

I love you for making this seat. It's the most perfect contraption ever created.

I had these pegs on my old 2000 hoffman ep.... My bike was over 40lbs back then...
Sure those pegs are indestructible... but man... it was a chore just doing a steam roller...
Im sure you could do rail grinds with those pegs...
I guess if you think your bike is a lil too light and wanted to add a pound and a half, using those pegs would be a good way to do it... I like the design and the length... but just couldn't deal with the weight...

There very nice pegs except they are heavy! Very comfortable, grippy and pivot well. If you drilled them out to lighten them they would be pretty good if you like 2X5 pegs.

I just dumped a full set of them.

4 Strong Islands = 48.4 oz
4 Plegs = 17 oz.

I lost 2 pounds alone just dumping those pegs. haha :D

right now my bike isnt soo heavy.   its long as heck tho.
feels like a race geometry in my frame.
weight doesnt realley matter to me.   im a beginner - and im hoping that
when I get ALL the basics down on a crappy setup
when I switch to a "real" flaland bike I should be able to ride it better,

but there is this little voice in the back of my head telling me to ride
not to worry about my setup being this or that -  and if I can manage
to make it happen on a turd of a bike
then I shoud theoreticly be able to ride anything.

that being said -  I still love the pegs
id hapily gain the extra ride time on big ol fat pegs vs little light pegs that hurt my archless feet.
I remember when freestyle bikes were a "team lift"  item.   haha
im new at this but im learning.
