Hotel information will be coming soon. I have a hotel near the contest special deal $89 a night. The usual for that area is $170 a night, so it a good deal. Stay tuned for more info. We will update our web page by the end of Feb.

Thanks
Scott

$250 dollars? ........ I have $250.

Sorry I'm terribly ignorant here.  Is there usually an entry fee to ride, or is this plain jam styles??? A show up and ride sort of deal. I want to go to New Orleans.

Anyone can ride on Friday for free. Plenty of room and even an empty parking lot next to the contest area.

Only competing pro's are allowed in the contest area on Saturday.

Just wanted to say tickets are booked. I WILL BE THERE.

I'm bringing my camera to cover the event completely. If anyone wants to contribute to getting some footage together but don't feel confident in their editing abilities, if you're shooting in MiniDV help me film so we can put together the biggest collaborative internet video to date for this contest! It NEEDS more coverage and we're the only ones that can do it proper!

Dude.  Just tell your cab driver to take you to Jackson Square.  Everything is right there.  The riverboats, Cafe DuMonde, all the best food in the world, Bourbon Street a few blocks walk.  Go on  a Ghost Tour or a Vampire Tour.  Visit a plantation and see the spanish moss.  Visit the St. Louis Cemetary No. 1 at night.  There is no vibe in the world like New Orleans.  I fell in love with the place and I will go back every year now.

Even if you don't compete, just chillin at Voodoo will be better than taking a chance with your life in downtown Memphis. lol  Been there too many times, they can keep that city.

Once again, big ups to Scott (and everyone else) for all their hard work that's going in to this event.  SO pumped.

It really was actually. But a lot of riders just did not like it. They didn't like the whole picking people out and they didn't like that some riders would advance without even riding.

I have to stay true to the riders while still having a good show for the spectators. So this change was needed. While the Battle Me format is really good for spectators it was a bit unbalanced. This format is very balanced.

Hope to see you all there.

Anyone check the Voodoo Jam site lately.  3 BIG names were just added to the list of pros competing and the beginner and expert categories are growing as well.  This is going to be the best Voodoo Jam yet, no doubt!

They entered expert.

I am sure Brian was thinking it has been some time since he rode in a contest. I appreciate him coming back and if he wants to ride expert I think thats a good decision.

As far as Isaiah goes. I think he entered some small contest in Georgia as Pro but I believe he is still riding in  Expert.  Im OK with that as well.

Making the jump to pro these days is a huge consideration, there's such a gap between top ams and pro's...You gotta like go into hiding for a couple years riding five hours a day to catch up with those guys.  Percy just won expert at FU Unlimited, Isaiah Jordan is super good, along with Bryan Huffman, this comp is worth just watching for the expert...Riding in the same class as these dudes is an honour.

a cool cat for sure, that includes all the NC riders.

You're completely right, there is a huge gap. And the differentiation between expert and pro is becoming more and more hazy. But the way I understood things were, once you go pro you can't go back. Look at Mervar, that dude was out of the loop for like over a decade. Came back and entered pro. Right where he left off. You think if Puente had re-entered competition after being mia for so long and entered expert he'd gotten away with it? Me, personally, if I ever get the audacity to even try and go pro, I'd never consider going backwards. Call it pride or call it shame. Your choice. For me it'd be a race for last place. I'm not rying to hurt feelings or step on toes, just calling it as I see it. Shoot for that matter Isaiah and Bryan ought to be flattered by my outlook on they're riding abilities. If someone even mentioned to me that I have pro link abilities I'd feel obligated to go pro. But hey whatever. Not my contest.

So, if I enter beginner because I don't get to ride but 3 or 4 times a month, you gonna think thats a good decision and be OK with it? Look I'm not out here trying to cause waves. I'm merely making a point. Everyone knows thats the last thing flatland needs is more controversy. Call me a prick !

Huck,

I dont think your being a prick at all and I understand your concerns. Its my call and I think its ok based on this.

Bryan Huffman has not competed in Pro in over 4 years at the least. I dont know the exact stat but Im sure its close. Also his last few contest he entered, he was not even close to the finals. So he took a long break and he has obviously decided to give it another go or to just come out and support..
The last time I seen him ride, the tricks he did could not compare to the am stuff now.
No nock on Bryan at all but being a full time worker I am sure he does not put the time in that Matthias, Terry and the others do.  Given Bryan's experience I totally trust his judgment and I am sure he is coming to support the event, not sand bag.

As far as Isaiah competing at a small Georgia contest.
That contest with ALL due respect, does not have the same level of riding as voodoo. I am sure some guys at the contest encouraged him to ride up in pro to help out the numbers.

Hey same thing for Jesse C. He entered a contest up north as a Pro, if he would not have Steph Cerra would have been the only Pro there.

If there was a complete USA circuit together then I think there would be some rules that would help out your concerns.
But there is not and its not their fault because of it.

The contest in Georgia just does not compare and what Bryan is doing seems to make sense to me.

So while I do agree with your concerns, their decisions have valid points that I must agree with.

But I will tell you this, because of your concerns, I will address this issue to my panel of pro riders and let them make a decision on it.

Also you always have the option to not come to Voodoo and start your own contest.

Your comparisons of this situation to Jesse Puente and you entering beginner have nothing to do with this. If you feel you should enter beginner then go right ahead buddy. I think all the riders know what the right thing to do is and I trust in that. If they take advantage of that trust then they will look out of place and I dont think anyone wants to do that.

Thanks
Scott

i know my opinion doesnt count...but once you go to any event..weather it be four or six years since the last time you have competed..i dont think you should be able to go back....no matter what contest it was or who you competed against....or what rider we are refering to...once you make adjustments for one...you have to make adjustments for all..and to also quote a pro flatlander.."there isnt to much of a difference in am and pro in two minutes..but overall there is a gap" i hope to think that this holds true...but thanks for listening scott... take care...thanks again..and good luck...tim

I've talked and dealt w/bryan quite a few times and he is a very honest, straight forward person.  If he feels his abilities are such that he's not able to ride pro, then so be it.  He's not the type of person to sandbag just to get a trophy.

As for not being able to go back, i never liked that rule.  I remember back in the day experts would ride some local comp or go overseas and be forced to enter pro due to a lack of experts(they cancelled to am class).  When they'd enter the next "afa" contest they wouldn't be allowed to go back to am and i thought that was crap.  They traveled overseas to compete but then must make a choice to not ride at all or turn pro for good just because the am class got cancelled?

Don't get me wrong, when I entered beginners class for my 1st comp 18 years ago, I wasn't happy that I was riding against guy who were CLEARLY expert or better, so I know peoples concerns.  I think thats what kept me away from entering comps and more so just going to ride and be w/friends, but even the beginners are awesome today so People need not worry so much...You'll all do fine!  good luck to everyone@ voodoo!

The fact that this is an issue is ridiculous, who cares, go ride, have fun...So what you don't get first because maybe some guy that should've competed pro competed in am, big deal...No offence to Bryan or Isaiah but looking at the list of pro riders...They could not compete against that...Those are the worlds best, and maybe Isaiah isn't am anymore, but he isn't comparable to Terry Adams either, come on.

^^^^^I would really like to see Bryan H. be involved in this comp and given the insane level of competition that will be present, I think the expert class is a great place for both Bryan and Isaiah.

I understand the concern here.  With this issue come lots of valid and not so valid points.  Because there is no "governing body" within the sport or standards that would distinguish a pro or expert, flatland will always have this problem.  The sport is so versatile, artistic and complex, and the line between classes has become very vague with the amount of progression taking place.  What we all have to rely on is the honesty of each rider with their own riding and the honesty of the flatland community with one another.

In a case like the one raised through these posts, I have to say that I respect Huffman for putting aside any pride that may come with a "pro" status and taking a step down to another class.  He's obviously being true to himself and to the skill level that he knows he has right now.  The same may go with Isaiah's case.  Without knowing the facts, I can only assume that he also knows what class he needs to be in right now and for voodoo.

Without any standards, whose to say when a "pro" rider should step down into expert and vise versa?  Huck's question here is very valid in the sense that at any time a "pro" rider could change classes and become a "sandbagger" in an expert class.  But would the flatland community allow that?  Probably not, which is where forums like Global are so important.  This is where we can raise these questions and keep the sport in check, or at least I would hope so.

Contests are important to this sport and we need more of them.  Every contest will be run differently and have its own flavor and style, but one thing that should always remain the same is the honesty of our riding.  We know where we belong and what we're capable of.  Being true to ourselves and honest with our riding skill and level, will in turn help keep contests honest and true to the sport.

Well, I knew this was going to come up and I almost created a topic a while back about this. So here we go....

1. I absolutely have no business riding against people like Justin Miller, etc. My tricks and ability are expert level and that's where I feel I belong. When I look at the riders signed up for expert, I feel those riders are on the same level as me.
2. Basically my choices were too compete in pro where I don't fit or not compete at all - I felt as if I wanted to support Scott and VooDoo any way I can so I made a decision to drop to where I felt I belonged.
3. I honestly don't want to cause problems, so if that's the case, I'll just come hang out and drink a few beers!
4. I doubt I could even place top three in the expert class so it's not like I'm trying to sandbag to get something. I'm a parking lot rider not a competition rider.
5. Yes I've competed in pro before. I was placing really well in the expert class at the BS contests and I had an opportunity to go to the x-games so I went for it. I got injured shortly afterward which kind of messed things up for me. I'm not trying to come up with excuses, but it's hard to progress when I had my knee blowing out every 6 months. I had 2 doctors tell me in 1999 that I would never ride a bike again so I'm just thankful to still get out in the lot.
6. I don't get paid to ride and I'm not pro skill level so why should I be in that class.

Huck - I completely understand your point and respect that.

Maybe we need a master class.

I feel your dilemna Bryan.  I have an event organized in Cleveland in 3 weeks and there are a bunch of older talented riders in the area that don't really have an appropriate class to enter.  Don't want to highjack the Voodoo thread, but keep an eye out for the flyer it will be up anytime now.

Man, Bryan. I feel like a heal. Dude, please don't let me pursuade your decisions on entering or not. Now you gotta enter. And I'm buying your first drink. These events are meant to be fun and I think a few people can vouch for me that I do tend to take flatland a little too serious at times. And I agree with everyone on here who made the comment that we all know where we belong and most riders are pretty honest with themselves and the sport. So, dude by all means do what you want. I totally respect your decisions. I'm probably just letting myself get too intimidated thats all. But hey, who knows we all have a chance at last place. HaHa! With riders like Diego, Chadwick and Isaiah we all need to be on our best game. These guys don't play. As for a masters class, I do think they need to incorporate something but these events are already jam packed and it would create more of hassle that its worth. What I need to do is stop crying and ride more so I can show all you guys what an old man is capable of. Lol. Yeah Bryan I'm with ya on the old injuries. They suck. Maybe they ought to just give us some curve points based on age. Ha! I Look forward to hanging out with all you guys.

On a more personal note, I'd love to be able to go pro before I hang up the pegs but with guys like Justin and Matthias its probably not going to happen. I just don't have the time to commit.
                   Peace, Huck

To me a PRO is someone who is looked up to, from young guys to old guys, and can ride really well. My riding buddy Andy Copper, is just that to me. He can't do a whopper or a crackpacker boomerang, but that doesn't matter to me. Andy is still someone i look up to as a role model for life and riding.

So no matter if your Lee Huck Edwards, Scott O'brien, Matthias Dandois or Bryan Huffman, you are all PRO's to someone. So dont worry about what class you are to be in, just support each other in this unique and fun sport. (just place yourself were you think you need to be)

That's a great idea...to have a memory of all the local, ams, pro's: Entire family of Flatland Riders from various communities depicted in a shot as one...Neela

I think that's a great idea! It would be kind of hard, though, considering there are 56 people registered (!), and who knows how many others are waiting till the day of the contest to register, or are just going to show up to ride.

Uhmm, just wondering if anyone could help me out with something.  I'm running a 3/8" axel but my forks are 14mm.  I don't have any adapters and it's usually not a problem, but for some reason it's been a bit of a bother recently.

If anyone has an extra set of those washer style adapters that come with pegs and could bring them to New Orleans for me, it would be most appreciated.  Thanks to anyone that can help.

I've never been so impressed with a contest, or with comp riding as I was this weekend. At the venue while I was peeing in the trough there was a 'gentleman' in there, apparently local who found himself absolutely blown away by what was going down on the floor. He was talking in a loud excited voice on his cell phone trying to get a friend/family out there IMMEDIATELY. I remember hearing the words "THIS IS INCREDIBLE! THESE GUYS ARE DOING LIKE GYMNASTICS ON BIKES! IT'S F*&%#$ AWESOME!! YOU'VE GOT TO COME OUT HERE RIGHT AWAY AND SEE THIS!"

As much as I try to not hear what people talk about in rest rooms, this exchange was pretty cool. It was real neat seeing a 'first timer' totally freaking out and getting amped on flatland. I'd really like to thank everyone involved with Flatland Voodoo Jam for a job well done.  It meant a lot to me to simply be there.  Contests like this can accomplish things.

Hey Scott, I noticed a saying on York Uno's shirt, and I was wondering if you might have insight on what it was refering to.  In my mind, it totally fits in with Voodoo jam.  The saying was;

Never has so little, meant so much, to so few.

I'm not implying the job you did to get Voodoo up and running is small, but in the grand scheme of things, the act of simply riding our bikes and doing tricks is pretty small.  Despite that, I don't think there was a single person that was there that wasn't blown away and impacted by the job you did in displaying it.

Thanks again to all those involved.  This was my first Voodoo experience, and it by far exceeded any expectations I could have had by watching previous year's footage (even though I've always gotten goosebumps from the little bits of the atmosphere that carried through on video).  It's a damn shame that every other North American contest is going to fail in comparison after experiencing Voodoo.

Just wanted to say thanks to Scott and Terry for the awesome contest!! This year was my 1st time to Voodoo and I was stunned not only by the contest in general, but the riding was just ridiculous. My motivation is at the top right now, going from riding with someone maybe 2 or 3 times a year to Voodoo was just intense. Also, New Orleans is for sure one of the coolest cities I've ever seen. My body is still detoxing from all the seafood and alcohol. haha. Thanks again guys!!!
