Title: Forks and stem weight 1 vs 1 1/8 ???
Post by: coaster on December 16, 2021, 09:18:41 PM
I'm try to remember how the weight was running the 1 inch forks, stem and headset vs the modern 1 1/8 stuff. Maybe the old school forks are lighter?

Hello Coaster, once I put a Tioga MX 2 1" headset on a scale. It was about 170 g. A shafted DK stem was 520 g (other were heavier I guess). Most forks at this time were in the range of 1,3 kg and more. So I would say on average a modern 1 1/8" system with roughly 65 g for a headset, about 250 g for a stem and 1 kg for a fork is about 600 g or more lighter. And stronger. And doesn't slip. I see only one advantage of a shafted stem: You can change the height pretty easy. Other than that I would say the modern system is much better. What do you think?
