Title: Did you ride today?
Post by: deacon on October 17, 2017, 08:20:03 PM
Well, what you working on, new link ups, variations, trying new parts, or riding new spots?
How was the session?

I got a pile of Fork Glides (riding out about 50% of them now), tried a load of Hang 5's and tbh didn't get very far on them. Peg Wheelies I was getting about 10 carpark spaces, and tried a few Decades but they were too scary so gave up quickly.

Session was cut short because I went out with no tools and knocked my handlebars backwards (bailing forward on Hang fives).
Good session though.

Sad to see such a positive post go unnoticed. So I just wanted to answer, NO. :D

PS: -tomorrow I am gonna bust my brains out.

No riding for me today, we're having torrential rain today but tomorrow is looking dry so I'll be back on it.

Seriously quiet forum though, it's like a ghost town!

Rode a little, but until I get my indoor spot in two weeks there's isn't much time until it gets too dark

Ollie, you are right...
Deacon, I was riding on Wednesday and hope for dry weather tomorrow to have a session. I am practising steanroller combos, hitchhiker combos, tomahawks and decade variations (mainly with brake). Especially perverted decades are not easy for me and I spent a lot of time practising these. On Wednesday I could not land the variations I wanted so I hope for a better result tomorrow  :)

Good stuff. I'm also riding tomorrow, if the dry weather we've been promised turns up. Really really want to land my first decade.

About 15 minutes of riding for me today. Hopefully, I'll get a chance for a longer riding time later this week.

3 hours yesterday after about 8 days off. worked  on forward half hikers from steam rollers which has been killing me for about 6 months now. 1 step forward 2 steps back :(

Just a quick 45 minutes this evening. Loads of Fork Glides, getting pretty consistent. Landing about 8 out of ten now.
Tried some more Decades but still too scared to commit, although did one where I landed with one foot on frame, one foot on floor.
As it's the weekend I'll be heading out in the morning too.

Also, if anyone can help, I've done something to my freecoaster. My back wheel started rubbing against the frame so I moved the wheel. Ack into place and tightened it back up. The cranks now sometimes rotate while rolling (they always stayed perfectly still. There still a bit of slack in the chain. Had a quick google but most advice is for adjusting the overall slack in the free coaster which isn't the problem.  Bit nervous if making it worse if I play around with it lol

Take the slack out of the chain. Just loosen one side and wedge the tire back with your hand then retighten and repeat.

Double session day today. Went out in the morning, got a puncture (lots of glass at my spot, I've sweeped it but more has turned up), sorted it out then had another session :)
Improved my Fork Glides loads, pretty much doing them every time now. I've also started doing them where I spin right round quickly  to land them without really 'gliding' them.
Landed about a dozen tailwhips. Not tried them before but they just seemed to click. Don't think I'm doing them properly as I do them on the front pegs rather than with a footjam, didn't realise I was doing them wrong until I got home and watched a tutorial lol.
BLOODY HANG FIVES!!!!! I find them so hard! When I'm at home thinking about them they seem so easy but when I session them they're nails. Managed one a car park width so pleased with that. Managed to roll one, two car park spaces by scooting into it with my foot on a curb.
Don't really know why I keep posting my progress here but I suppose it's not doing any harm :)

Metalbikes: took slack out of the chain which has made it a bit better but it still sometimes rotates.

Cool!
I would not say you do the tailwhip wrong. Place your feet wherever it feels good...
Keep patient with the hang five, this is definitely not easy!
Good luck and have fun!

Great session today and yesterday. Sun is shining, around 7°C, back on track with old stuff, slowly shifting my focus to new tricks, just as it should be in the new year. Winter has been kind so far. #thanksglobalwarming

Great session this evening. Nothing new, but getting more consistent with stuff I've been learning. Fork Glides every time now. Tailwhips about 50/50. Did a hang 5 three car park spaces!! Absolutely buzzing off this.
Tried some half-lashes as Ido mentioned them earlier but got nowhere with them lol.
Put a new tire on the front too and scuffing felt much grippier. I'm Really struggling with squeakers, others have said they're fairly easy but I can't get anywhere with them. Struggle to scuff and my foot constantly gets caught in the chain ring.

hi deacon, congratulations on the hang5  :D
can you show me a video of you trying the halflash?
I may help you better if I see you trying it.
however, possible common tip:
usually when people learn halflash they put the kicking foot down after kicking the frame, if that is the case lean more forward AND ALSO with the foot on the front peg lean your fingertips forward and sweep the peg towards you (like you are trying to bring the peg close to you under the bike, the it similar to how you balance hang5).

I'll try and film it next time I'm riding :)

Hey deacon,
very cool that you did that hang 5! I remember when I rolled it for a few meters the first times. It is a good feeling, isn't it?  :)
Keep on practising, this is a nice and important trick!
The halflash took a while for me. And I had the problem that ido rosen mentioned: I touched with the foot that kicked the frame every time. I realised that it was a mental thing in the end and I managed to convince my mind that I do not need to touch. Then I could do it.
I did not ride lately because I hit my lower leg really hard shortly before Christmas and it still hurts. I hope to be back on the bike in one or two weeks.

No riding for me the last few weeks.  It has been really cold and now we have snow.  I may try to head to the underground garages downtown.

My new spot is a multi-story carpark. After 7pm I can get a whole level to myself :)
Not perfectly but close enough for a bit of practicing.
Title: Re: Did you ride today?

Not perfectly flat.
Title: Re: Did you ride today?
Post by: ido rosen on January 16, 2018, 09:17:53 AM

I know how your feeling, many times I find spots with good floors but are not perfectly flat.
I think it's like that because when it rains it prevents from the water to accumulate.
I believe that basketball courts are more leveled, but I may be wrong.

Got a good 2 or so hour ride in today! Drizzled on me for part of it, but thankfully never got too slippery. Only got about 15 minutes yesterday before the rain decided my session was over. Sometimes I'll try and deal when it gets rainy out. But, I find that I waste too much time worrying about falling hard when it's wet and not enough time enjoying being on my bike.

Finding a great spot is so hard sometimes (especially in the winter). I used to have some relatively good winter riding spots but last year all the covered playgrounds started spraying the ground with some de-icer stuff that ironically makes the ground almost as slick as if there was ice.

Sounds like you're making great progress Deacon! keep it up man.

Get better soon Daddycool! Nothing worse than not being able to do what you want...

I've been going to a large multi-storey city carpark to ride but on Friday evening got kicked out (I'm a 38 year old and this hasn't happened to me in twenty years since my skateboarding days so felt a little odd lol). I'll need to hunt out another spot but I'm in a good sized city so should be able to find one.

I've tried raining in the wet but it's just not for me, can't enjoy it at all.

Water may well destroy your hubs, bottom bracket and will cause rust around bolts and many other parts. I never ride in the rain, not even light rain, freecoasters are so gentle  O0

ha, I hear ya Deacon. I'm 44 and recently got kicked out of a parking garage by a dude about half my age. I also found it funny that he was riding around a bike mountain bike and here I was on a little 20"er.

You're right Ido about the fact that water is terrible for your bearings/frame etc. But, where I live it rains almost 9 months out of the year and sometimes I just say screw it and ride. I do spend a lot of time drying my bike down after those sessions. But, yeah... still not good for my bike.

As far as did I ride today? Not yet... It's pouring out right now and I may try to ride later at a new school I found recently that has a covered playground area (It's not a great spot to ride, but better than not riding). However, I may just stay inside and take the bike apart and clean it/do some maintenance. Not nearly as fun, but definitely something I enjoy doing as well.

I see what you mean Timmer74, if it would rain 9 months where I live I would also ride on light rain sometimes.
i'm 36, I also was asked to leave a spot several times, but it was justified because I was riding in front of a theater gate and before people would leave after a show the security would ask me to leave so no one would get hurt(the crowd is exiting in it's masses).
I haven't rode today, I'm waiting for my new custom bike to arrive in the mail...

Thank you guys for the kind words!
I tested my leg on Saturday with running and it was fine. So I had a session yesterday and I have to tell you after more than four weeks off the bike it was great! Of course I was not so consistent but could pull a few combos and it just felt great to be back again.
I am very lucky to have access to a hall from a bike club. They offer cycle ball, unicycle hockey and such stuff. I pay a member fee and can go there also on the weekend. When it rains outside and it is cold I feel really privileged to be able to go there! And I do not get kicked out of course. This happened to me as well in the past and it is so annoying...

I'm happy to hear your leg is good again.
that hall looks like a really really great spot, I would gladly pay to ride there.

Great to hear DaddyCool! I'm super jealous that you have a good indoor spot! I'd also happily pay to have a spot like that. We do have indoor skate/bike parks where I live. But, no good place to ride flat in them... I dream about buying/leasing a warehouse to ride in. But, yeah, I just don't really see the wife being on board for that one.

You are right, I am really lucky with that hall. I read here on GF that Dustyn Alt has access to such a hall and then I searched the web for bike clubs in the surroundings and asked many of them. Two answered me and now I am a member of two clubs  :)
One has its own hall (the one shown at the picture) and the people from the other one train in a school sports hall. They both gave me one date per week where I can enter the hall which is not so much. But I can enter one of the halls on the weekend when there is no other happening. So I can not ride whenever I want but most of the time I can have at least two sessions per week which is very good.
I will try to ride in the second hall tomorrow!
Maybe you can also try to get in contact with some sports clubs. I think it is a compromise but easier to be accepted by your wife  ::)

That sounds great. Do you have problems with the bike damaging the floor?
Title: Re: Did you ride today?
Post by: DaddyCool on January 24, 2018, 09:56:37 AM
Hey ido rosen, I guess you are right  ::)
deacon, in one hall I need to use white (let's say not black) tires in order not to cause marks on the floor. When the bikes falls on the ground it causes small dents here and there. I told them that the bike would possibly hit the floor and they said it would be ok. I hope they won't blame me for that in the future...

Hi deacon,
I had a session yesterday. I could pull some good combos but I am not completely back. But I also enjoy a session when I can not pull my best tricks.
What about your last session? Did you ride these days?
