Title: using faltland frame for street riding
Post by: donnyk on August 17, 2013, 06:19:45 PM
Hi~

Riding deco succubus v2 19"

I'm only 5' 5", so I thought it would fit me fine, however these days I'm feeling it to be twitchy for street tricks. It feels so unstable and hard to bunny hop higher than 2 feet.

Have anyone tried using flatland frame for street? How did it feel like?

That should be a decent length for street. What bars and stem are you running? What angle are the bars at with respect to the fork?

That frame is basically a street frame.. as far as construction and strength.

What forks and stem are you using?

Like out riding said basically a basic Bmx frame with alittle lower stand over. Chad jumped off his roof into his pool and I'm sure he has played street/flat with it as well n should be fine

Currently I'm using 46mm stem with KHE cirrus bar which is about 7.25 high And using Aj fork.

Some bro who tried my bike guesses the reason of awkward feeling might be because of standard offset stem& zero offset fork combination.

I thought geometry controversy is only meaningful for skilled riders...

Reason might be just lack of practice LOL

Can u try a taller and wider bar? That cirrus bar may be a little small.

Personally I wouldn't ride zero anything on a hybrid. Stem is good but I would do at least 8-8.25 bar height and a minimal fork( deco , primo strand, older odyssey minimal). The strange feeling could be the lack of full sweep on the bars also

You should try out a 20" Fit Benny L Frame. I've been riding on for Street & Flat & whilst the super steep Head Tube Angle & Minimal Offset Forks took some getting used to, it is a super fun Frame to ride.

Fit Benny L 20" Frame
Primo Strand V2 Forks
S&M Enduro 36mm Stem
S&M Intrikat 8.5" Handle Bars

Pretty much a Streetlanders wet dream! You'll be able to ride both Street & Flatland on that set up, you'd be able to blast around on the streets & It shouldn't feel out of place riding Flat.

That bar and stem together are superb. I really like the sweep of the bars--not too much, just right. Stem is soooo smooth on the backside and holds real tight.

thanks to all of you guys!

I appreciate all the advice mentioned.

By the way, I should try the bigger bar first. ;D

Yes, you can absolutely ride a short flat frame for street riding.  Chad Degroot, Osicka, Jay Miron, Tunney, and others did for years.  I'll tell you though, especially if you are used to a longer frame, it's never going to feel as stable as a 20.5"+ frame.   For street stuff centered around hops and grinds then it will make less of a difference than for jumping big jumps and park riding, jumping short bikes always felt loopy to me.  If you have the means, some riders end up going the 2 bike route, others (like Travis Collier or Matthias) make it work on one bike.

Check out Travis Collier's ride(s) from a few years ago, great example of a good all around flat/street bike

Honestly though, I predict that flatland bikes are going to start getting longer.  Matthias is leading the charge.  Modern street frames are more or less just flatland bike (steep head tubes, short chain stays) with long front ends.  So long as you are not doing a lot of deathtruck type tricks, you don't really have to have a tiny 18" top tube bike.  I ride a 19" Intrikat, but in the past I've ridden everything from a 18.75" Hoffman to a 20.5" Sunday for flatland and I was able to adapt just about everything.  If I rode now as much as I did when I was 20 I'm sure I could adapt to the longer bikes without too many problems.  It's all what you get used to.

I do the opposite, use a street frame for flat, then, no worries... but I wouldnt use a London or StMartin for street.

X2 I struggled trying to get along with my equilibrium but its just too small for me to feel comfy on. Too used to the size of street bikes so ended up with a Sunday frame/ min offset forks short stem & 'biggish' bars I can try flat, do hop candybars and have done handrails that are bar height. Don't think I could/dare hop my khe higher then peg height. :)

i don't know if i wanna swap it like for like to get it alot shorter or swap the frame out with a profile 48mm acoustic  stem so it's almost the same length as the Justice but with a shorter frame  ??? ??? ???

I'm afraid the Benny will always be mine! I purchased my Custom FBM & a few months later i got the Benny! That's how much i wanted one! Ryan from S&M/Fit was kind enough to send me an envelope full of stickers over from America, I have put all the OG Decals back on the Benny Frame & it is going to be hung on the wall in my Bedroom! Maybe one day it will be re-built? But for now, it will take pride of place on my Bedroom wall!

18.9 Flatware frame, zero offset forks, 35mm stem, Deep Escobar bars, tall ass seat post.

I ride park/street/flat with that set up.  Anything will work if you are used to it.  Works fine.
