Title: Terry now riding for Deco Frames + Signature frame coming
Post by: Mr News Bot on May 04, 2013, 10:16:22 AM

Terry joined the Deco team and will be riding one of their frames from now on. He posted a little statement on his website: "As of today I will be riding Deco Frames with legendary Flatlander and all around BMX Legend Chad Degroot. Everything stays the same with Odyssey, maker of best BMX parts in the world, but my new frame sponsor will be Deco. I hope everyone is as excited as I am. Look out for my signature TA frame out soon!"

On the Deco website we found another comment of Terry on the TA frame: "The TA model has everything I have always wanted in a great solid traditional looking flatland frame. It’s not gimmicky, has a simple design, and its built to last. Its still short but long enough to make you feel like a man. Removable tabs and built in chain tensioners to keep things practical. This frame is everything I want between my legs. This is some quality sh*t that will provide tons of fun and give you a happy ending every time you ride it."

For sure we'll see Terry and his new frame in action at the Voodoo Jam

Let's see how creative Deco gets with this frame other than stamp on a previous frame, espceially using the TA name for a frame.. Retro decals using orginal Skyway color scheme and TA Terry Adams name and an all white frame maybe?

I get that Terry is now sponsored by Deco and you want to put your sponsor in the best light but if I was odyssey I would be pissed.  His statement is it's everything I wanted in a frame, so the waltz was not yet he designed it?  Personally I am sure the deco ta or the waltz are pretty equal in terms of quality.  Also he says it is not gimmicky yet the first frame he designed at odyssey had that curved down tube which to me was a bit of a gimmick and a fad.  I still think Tery rips though and I totally respect the guy and all he does for flatland but his statement should of been thought out a bit more.

I get the whole odyssey being pissed about this but if in a years time he's on a different frame it will be the same story about how this ones more perfect then previous models, it's not going to help sales much if he says 'the deco has my name on but it's not as good as the waltz'

His bent downtube waltz came out a time when it WASN'T trendy to have a bent tube. Later, he realized that he could still do all of his tricks with a full straight tubed frame.

Any body who has bent tube frames that they now hate send them to me for free pleaz....Just saying I still like them over the straight tube it's not because of riding style or anything like that I just like the way the look.

Other than a slightly longer (19.5?) top tube and the chain tensioers, I can't see that there's much of a difference or improvement to the Waltz.

Looks like he has both of the sizes on his Deco frames--same as flatware waltz and tango frames.

Improvements: integrated chain tensioners

I doubt odyssey is pissed. Terry probably moved because Deco can offer an additional deal on top of what Terry got with Odyssey. He's been with them for quite a while and gets paid for riding and promoting their parts and I doubt the frame changed anything. With Deco he's getting two paychecks. One from odyssey and now one from deco. That's just how it works.

the odyssey frame came out right when bent tube frames became unpopular, odyssey decided to not make flat frames again, kept TA as a fully sponsored parts rider and he found a new frame sponsor, the end.

Odyssey still makes the Tango flat frame.  I am happy for Terry he deserves to get all he can, it seemed odd that he switched frames.  I would think that Odyssey that sponsors him to ride their parts would want him to ride their frames as well.  It's like saying that yeah their parts are great but the frames I helped design were a bit lacking so I went else where.  Most likely its all good though knowing Terry, doubt he is one to burn a bridge and riding for Chad is not a bad thing.

Didnt terry have a signature frame from ARES also, one that he hadnt designed ?
Because it had been drawn up for Jeff Descrohe, but he didn't want it as he had not had any input in the frame.

Personally I would have chosen the flatware frame of the deco in terms of build quality and detailing.

Shame that Odyssey pulled out of frames for flat ..... But I cant help but wonder if it was due to sales in part due to market size, or due to design.

Maybe they just simply didn't want to re-invest in an other batch of Waltz frames....none of us really know what the deal was, right?!!?

I have a V1 Deco frame and it is on par with any bike out there! Chad and Terry are good old friends and I imagine a mutually beneficial deal was struck...simple as that!

I really don't see much difference between this Deco frame and the Waltz V2.

Deco frame has 14mm drop outs/built in chain tensioners. Overall, both frames appear similar. With the resources Odyssey/Flatware has, I was hoping for a wider range of product offering. I digress here, but a nice simple pivotal seat seat and pegs would have marketed well. Oh well.....

Terry is riding the Deco frame because Odyssey will not continue producing the Flatware frames after these are sold.  Snatch up the Flatware frames while they're still available because once they're gone - they're gone forever.

i also have heard this rumor.  I know they made a ton of the v1's (probably more frames than flat riders) and that said, not everyone would aswitch to it anyways so they may have seen it as a business failure considering how they pump out odyssey parts and sunday bikes frames/components/completes and flatware accessories (non frames)

It sucks that Ody isn't making frames anymore.  From a production standpoint, they are by far and away the best and most thought out flatland frames ever made. People forget just how amazing 41 Thermal really is, and Odyssey employes the best designers that BMX has ever had.  Ever.  It's a shame.  With no more Hoffmans, Odysseys...not a lot of frame choices left unless you want some super short, super weird, easily cracked, super low slung frame designed by a stoner high school dropout with no mechanical engineering experience, awesome.  Decos are an exception to this, they look nice and the geometry is great, but I'm still confused as to why Chad refuses to list whether or not the frame is 4130, and where the tubing comes from. Sanko?  Or something else?  Why won't he say?  He says that the metal is good but if it was a good quality 4130, you think he'd list that in the specs about the frame.  Confusing.

No more Strowlers? Bummer...THAT frame had a good run...kudos to HB for keeping it around for so long!!

As for the Deco material? I doubt it's refusal on Chad's part to list intricate specs x1000....They are chromoly. No need to make up a fake "proprietary" name for the tubing, or some weird brand name description as if the frame buyer knows anything about tubing manufacture!

If it wasnt 4130 it would be super heavy, right??  I love the V1 Deco frame I have, and since it came out they have been getting lighter and more refined!  No problems there.

After asking around repeatedly, no one will confirm or deny what's going on at HB, but since they haven't even released ANY 2013 frames at all and we're already halfway through the year, I wouldn't say the outlook is good.
It would be nice if they'd let their customers know if they're planning on selling any more product.  I don't mind waiting for the bike I want (I missed getting a Big Daddy in the early 90's since they all usually sold the very first day they hit the bike shops- you had to call on the right day or you were sh*t out of luck) but I've been waiting for close to 2 years now.  Not great customer service.

I'm not 100% on this, but I think Terry had two contracts with Odyssey; one contract with Odyssey as his parts sponsor, and one contract with Odyssey as his frame sponsor.  His move to Deco as a frame sponsor has no impact on his parts sponsorship contract with Odyssey.

I know a lot of bmx companies (and smaller mtn bike too) orders got pushed back due to a "bigger" client placing a huge order.  that said i can only assume it's giant bikes.  they are opening a line of corporate stores to compete against treks corporate stores and i'm sure they need stock on hand to fill the stores.  giants complete line (as with trek, schwinn, etc) is about 50-60 models deep (not including excercise equipment.  a small company like hoffman with 20 models will get pushed back every time for this type of thing.

Carbon steel weighs what carbon steel weighs. Regardless of being labeled "4130", "Sanko", "mild steel", or whatever else, it all weights the same.....which is .283 lb/cubic inch. The difference in weight comes from the strength properties of 4130 itself and being able to keep the walls thinner than, say "mild steel". For "mild steel" to take the same stresses as thin walled 4130, it's walls must be thickened, leading to heavier tubes, leading to heavier frames.

At a guess, I would believe that the Deco frames are made from what many factories class as "CrMo" which is usually a seamed tube using a cheap stock metal, common in Taiwan. I dont believe it has the same properties as US grade 4130, but it has served the bmx community fairly well for a good many years. Although many manufacturers who do work out of Asia, often use other tubes (such as Sanko) for what they believe is increased performance in relationship to the design being made.

They wouldn't give me a straight answer either.  I wouldn't think that saying their manufacturer is experiencing delays would bother their core customers much, it's a legitimate problem that HB can't really do anything about, unless Mat wants to fire up the ramp room machine shop again.  Early in their career they never had a problem saying "we're making the bikes as fast as we can, hold tight while we get our production up to meet demand."  The new (proposed) flatland frame is supposed to be really good, I don't mind waiting, but who knows now whether or not it will ever get released.  It's been at least 2 years since I heard anything about it now.  Who's running the show over there?

I have never had a problem using 3/8" axles in a 14mm frame...just use those little rings that sit inside the dropout...never a problem with me anyway!

14mm Drop outs are a huge plus! Numerous "Street" Freecoasters are 14mm & a few have Shemale axles with 3/8ths bolts so we can continue using the average flatland peg! I find with "Street" freecoasters the axles are a sh*t load stronger & there are a few that i believe work better. Like the V3 Federal Coaster has a thrust bearing behind the driver! Crank flips galore!! The Ezra coaster is 14mm & alot of people have been raving on about how great it is & although i wont use one (wont go into details) Alot of people want to & do use them & if theyre running a 3/8ths frame you have to modify the axle or drop outs. 14mm Drop outs solve this problem!

I think 14mm is the way to go even though I've run a 3/8" Nankai for close to 15 years.  It's easier to user those little adaptor collars than breaking out the Sawzall on a $300 frame....
