Title: Over 30 years old - "Old farts" thread
Post by: Mike Dood on July 08, 2007, 02:16:11 PM
I wanna know who is all over 30 here and tell a little bit about what go you back into flat.

I'm 34 and I actually got back into because my grandmother died. She left us a little money and said to buy something you will enjoy! So I bought a flatland bike!!  What else could possibly be more fun and give me joy!!  OK 4 hot honies in my bed, that'll top it but...

I rode from 1985-1991 and did some AFA comps. Had a decent slew of tricks under my belt.  Some of them I still can do and others I can't. I can't do a cherry picker anymore, a decade, boomerang, half lash... I lost those tricks but haven't relearned or tried to dial them quite yet. I don't care what anyone says cherry pickers are tits!!

I wouldn't give up the old days of flatland ever! I remember being 9 years old driving past a parking lot seeing these older dudes on BMX bikes doing tricks! Not on dirt, not on ramp but just in the parking lot! It was so new and so COOL no one really knew WTF it was! I'm proud to say I lived in this time of infancy!!

I been riding a solid 5 months but been back in the scene the last year or so. My riding is progressing very nice I think and very happy with the effort I have put in. I ride everyday a minimal of 1 hour sometimes 6-8 hours. I never really get sore either.

I will add this, Wilhelms Ground Rules DVD was a HUUUUUGE help to me. I don't know if my riding would be where it is without that dvd to help me! It's just one fantastic dvd.

So let's hear it from some other "old farts" here!

I posted this last week but here is a small video of me just freestyling some of my basic stuff... I'm working on lots of ways to link other tricks at this point... like side squeeks to halfhikers.. guess what.... so my approach is dialing in the ride in tricks good now to get to the bigger tricks down the road.

I'm close to riding into undertakers now and that is so cool!! :D

well, i guess ill be the first to chime in here..lol

Im 35,I started in 87 and rode till about 89. i was a pretty good rider back then, i mean i wasnt a mazing  or anything but i had a few good ones under my belt. halflashes, decades, backyards, boomerangs, boomerankles, antriders, cherry pickers, miami hoppers, fire hydrants, miami hop hops, randy rolls, (which i dunno what they call them now, but it was basically a boomerang where you land with one foot on the top tube close to the head tube and then go aaround again), cyclones, grasshoppers, crickets,  tailwhips. I lost most of that stuff unfortunately, some of which i dont even care to re-learn. I can still do tailwhips, firehydrants and back yards. Im slowly getting boomerangs back.

i got back into the scene on and off in 2003, met joe lawler and have basically learned alot about parts and bikes and such. I only started to get very serious about riding again last year. so really im only a year in at this point. but this is definatly the most fun ive had since i rode back in the late 80s and i dont think im gonna stop till i drop dead, reguardless of how good i do or do not get!

its in the blood, it will never leave!

What a perfect point to introduce myself .

I just hit upon this forum as I decided recently to have a bash as flat again, and was looking for some info on the best bike for a 6'3"er nowdays.
I haven't done it for about 12 years. My reason for loosing interest in it was because I got into cars. This has kind of paid off as I became the UK/European drifting champion last year, and own the company driftworks.com .
The reason I'm looking to get back into it is because I'm now 30, I can afford all my cars and a reasonable bike. I also used to find it an awesome way to relax. Oh and I'm a hell of a lot fatter than I was when I used to flatland, so now I've got a nice big flat area outside my workshop, it'll be an enjoyable way to loose weight  ;D.

I was never that great, but as long as I can learn to do hang fives, and lame attempts at hang ten's everywhere again I don't care  ;D.
Anyway, nice to meet you all, and I'm sure I'll ask a sh*tload of dumbass questions later.

Not only with flatland it's a pleasure to meet you on the auto aspect man!!

I'm 37.  I started in 84.  Back when you had to rewind your bars to untangle the brake cables if you did anything that required turning them more than 90 degrees.  ^_^

I rode just about every day till about 89 when I started College.  I rode on an off, not really seriously - just a day or two here and there for about the next 5 or 6 years.  One day I needed some new tires for my car and was broke so I ended up selling my bike to a kid who lived up the street.

As you get older, if you don't want to deteriorate physically, you've got to exercise somehow.  I hate exercise.  I get bored easily.  My son is now old enough to try some tricks and I was showing him on his bike.  That got me thinking....if I get a new bike I can kill two birds with one stone.  I can get some exercise and some of my upper body/back strength back and spend time with my boy sharing with him something I've enjoyed.

I'm finding I've got to relearn most of the old tricks that seemed easy BITD.  Most of it is either remembering the motions or working to get my upper body strength back where it used to be in order to support myself during tricks requiring some strength.  I used to be able to do decades in my sleep...now they're really scary!  Hopefully once I've got my strength back where it should be, I'll get back some of my tricks.

I just turned 34 last week.  Just graduated law school and am currently studying for the bar exam.  It is THE worst thing ever.  I have two kids (ages 1 & 4).  Live in midtown Manhattan (NYC).

I grew up riding BMX bikes.  Started doing tricks in 85.  My brother, my friends, and I had a trick team (the Rage Trick Team) and we used to do shows in our area (NJ).  Soon everyone got girlfriends and I was left on my own.  I rode until about 1993 while in college at NYU during the heyday of Mullaly.  HATED competing, but loved travelling to the contests and York jams just to hang out and ride.  I was in a couple of issues of RIDE magazine in 1992 (if anyone remembers..."I suck at dirt jumping").

After that, I raced mountain bikes (semi-pro XC) and road bikes up (cat. 2) until a couple years ago.  Bought a flatland bike last November because I was starting to feel old.  Been riding pretty consistently the last few months and I'm having a blast.

I'll be at the NYC jam (it's two blocks from my apt.).  I'll be easy to spot 'cause I bet I'll be the only one with kids following them around.

I'm 35, started riding Flat around 86...and never have stopped since.
Finished high school in 1990, went to college here in Puerto Rico for my BA from 1991-1994 (those were awesome riding year). Then I hopped on a plane (along with my 93 GT Pro Freestyle Tour) and moved to Philadenphia to get my Master in Fine Arts degree.
While I was there I got married to my beutiful wife, kept riding mostly by myself, attended the Sproket Jockies Shows (1996, 1997) where I met Day Smith, Dave Mirra & Dennis McCoy.
Later on 1997 I moved back to my country, got a full time job as a fine arts college professor, and kept riding hard. -_-
Currently, my wife & I have two sons, Diego & Sergio (7 & 5).
I attended a national flat contest here in Puerto Rico this weekend where I got third place in Pro class. ;D
I don't have the time I had when I was in my twenties to ride as frecuently as I'd like to and be on top of my game, but when ride a try to make the most out of it.

i'm a 33 year old who STILL can't seem to let go of my DeGroot grips(youth).  it was a schoolday in oct. of 86 when my friend brought a bmx action mag to school. i saw a Schwinn ad with Jason Parks doing a lawnmower in front of a big Godzilla statue, and i said to jim, "dude, i'm gonna learn to do tricks on a bike like that." got my first trick bike on Christmas Eve- a schwinn predator freeform-z. i was 13 at the time. over the past 20 years, i got into all forms of freestyle-flat, street, ramps, park, dirt. now as my body has grown more ache-prone, i basically only ride flat. of course, over those 20 years, i had gotten into some other things, and liquor was probably the worst. it attracted me away from my bike. dang devil juice. not completely away, but enough to say i was more of an alcoholic than a bike rider. i finally pulled my head out of my ass and became a quitter! yup, i quit DRINKING! and boy howdy, let me say riding with a clear head-there is nothing better! i also had a letter printed in the dec. 06 issue of RideBMX titled "20 years deep". even on this day, and i can see for a while more, all i do is eat, sleep, work, and everything flatland. its almost like a drug. some drugs hurt, some make you feel euphoria, some leave you confused- just like riding flat. my days of drinking and partying are done, so now i can put all my focus into squeezing 20 more years out of this earthen baggage my soul resides in on my riding. i guess the only way i will stop riding any time soon is if i go blind or become a quad or lose my legs. i don't compete, i have never attended a big jam and hell, i dont even listen to music most of the time i ride. i'm still learning new manuvers and linking older tricks with my "new" ones. i hope you all get levels of satisfaction from riding that is so hard to put into words you just say "you gotta know what i mean!"

i guess i qualify as an "old fart" in this thread. i tell ya tho, at 31 i feel at my prime.  i never rode bitd, started at 27 or 28 yrs. old, so i'm an oddball in the sense that i'm older, yet all my influences are "new school". big props tho to all the 'older' guys still holding it down. i hope to be a very old rider.

Im 35 and dont think about the old days. I just go ride...I quit for about four years..sorta...about 91 or so but still came out every faw weeks.

I think the "old days" is soemthing I think about for thirty seconds when I'm drunk.

I usually just think about the guys that quit and why.

Whats the point of riding EVERYDAY if all you do is look in the rearview?

I liked the old days only because I was there enjoying them at the time...did you realy pull a link in 1987 hoping it'd be that long lasting memory?

32 here. Started in 88, during the "decline".  Ha ha!  I'm always late to the party!  Rode hard for 4 years until 1992, and then myself, along with all my riding buddies just stopped. Don't know how it happened.  How we could go from riding 8 hours a day to NOTHING, but we did.

We got pretty good too.  Crackpackers, rolling backyards, dump trucks, hang fives, 'lashes, fire-halls, swirlies, double decades, etc etc.  Nothing insane, and even our stuff was outdated at the time, but for a bunch of kids, we were pretty good and damn we had fun.  Looking back, which I do all the time, it was the best years of my life.  Endless summer.  Every year for 4 years.

15 years later, my riding buddy calls me up saying he's been watching flat stuff on youtube, etc etc and he's thinking of buying a bike!  1. I couldn't believe he found me after all these years.  and 2. I was secretly putting my old flat bike back together at the SAME TIME!  Unbelievable.

So we've been out about 7-8 times and most of our stuff has come back.  Boy, the bike sure felt small at first.  The first hour was a write-off. I couldn't do ANYTHING.  But slowly, the "feel" came back. When we start learning new stuff, who knows, but GOD its great to be back on a bike again!!!!

Here's something that came back pretty fast.  Although we used to do a lot more spins and whips in between, LOL!  Hopefully the multiple stuff comes back.

Yep, that would be me too...80s rider, got out when I got into cars.  I was lucky and rode during flatland's boom and lived in a freestyle mecca (northern VA).  Spent many a weekend up at Rockville BMX and many AFA contests, and I've met and/or ridden with most of the greats of that time period (K Jones, Mark Eaton, Hoffman, McCoy, Voelker, Moliterno, etc).

Buying a new freestyle bike has been nagging me for years...but I never took the step of buying a new bike. I recently moved to a new town and met some like minded thirty year olds, which pushed me over the edge.

I'll be 34 in August....ride flat on a street bike with front and rear brakes.   Old school!
I've been riding again since February or so, primarily flatland, but have had the past few months off due to a BMX-related collarbone break (strayed into riding park and paid the price!).  Prior to my injury, I was riding 8-10 hours a week.

I was dismayed at the amount of skill I've lost with my 15+ year break, but I'm thrilled to be riding again, and am having a great time.  I can ride into and out of steamrollers, funky chickens, short hang-5s, cyclones, etc and have just started getting whiplashes back as well.   My eventual goal is hitchhikers, as it's a trick I always wanted to learn back in the day, but never did.   We'll see!

30 years old.
I was into cars aswell, but that was not my reason to stop riding. I just got lazy and i quit way before that!
I stopped riding in 91 or 92. Got back into it around 99 or a little and now im back again.
Got back into it recently and loving it...

Mutt's on the first page, you missed him.

I'm going to be hitting 34 in a couple months or so, but, technically, nothing got me "back" into flat. I was a street/dirt/racer during high school, and a "dedicated" street rider during the 90's, got out of it 'cause I hurt myself very badly, and then got into flat a couple three years back because it was a little more low-impact compared to other types of BMX. I'm horrible at it, but it makes me happy.

Also-I was contacted recently about a 30+ jam goin' on in K.C. sometime in July but the message got erased. If this is still happening please let me know.Thanks.

Allright so a youngin I ride with told me about this thread so I'll post my story too.

I'm 35...live in Tucson.  I rode BMX when I was a kid and started riding flatland in about 1986.  I rode mainly Redline RL 20IIs and I was never awesome but I could pull a few tricks here and there.  RL Osborn was my hero :P  I quit around 1990 or 91 for the same reason I've seen a few of you site...stupid ass cars.  Just playin, nothing wrong with the car scene but I wish I had continued riding.  A good friend of mine (Ryan Sanchez) continued riding on and off and I decided to get back into it about a year and a half ago for fun and exercise.  I got myself  DK Signal and on my third session, I injured my ribs fairly seriously so that kinda scared me off of it for awhile.  I went to the Long Beach Jam in December of 06 and that got me stoked again so I've been riding pretty seriously since then (2-3 times a week).

I've gotten most of my old tricks back and am working on learning some new stuff.  My body hurts alot more than it did when I was a kid but I still love the feeling of pulling that trick for the first time and the comradery of our little Tucson crew.  I'll never enter a comp but I'm definitely back in it for the forseeable future.  I've upgraded everything on my bike now and changed to the new Justin Miller frame last month.

I really like the way the sport has gone.  Flatland doesn't get the attention it used to get but I think its brought the riders closer and is way cooler that way.  Everyone I've met since I've been back has been totally cool no matter where their skill level is and that's great to see.  Bikes are also built sooooo much better now.  The bike I have now is way tighter than any bike I had back in the day.

Thanks to Ryan, BB, Harb, and Jason for keeping me motivated!

See you at the next Cali jam!

Spence from Tucson

I'm 35 started doing tricks in 84. Got serious in 86 and competed until 91. NBL, AFA and smaller local contests. Went to Woodward in 88 and 89, then taught flatland there for the summer of 91. I focused on work and building my career after that and redoing houses for the past 10 years. Now that my kids are getting big, and we are done moving I've got some time for riding again.

Grew up riding in Raleigh NC. Many of the guys I grew up riding with are still involved in the sport. It was amazing to watch the sport start from nothing and grow into a huge sport, followed by a long lull while it went "underground" to today, where I think (and hope) it will get big again.

I see a day where the top 20 pro riders don't have to start a bike company to make a living riding flat.

The best part of being an older rider is the ability to make your own spot to ride. I built my house with a basement with 9 foot ceilings and a large garage and driveway.

And now my wife and I are considering putting in a tennis court...

I just built my new bike this weekend.

I'm hitting 4-0 next month.  I see flatland as something I like to do.  I spent decades looking at flatland a a "thing" following all the riders, videos, contests, progression.  I'm a bit burned out on it all actually.  Now I dont' really even consider flatland outside of my own riding.  I'm happy guys are out there pushing and promoting but I have come to realize that I don't owe anymore than just keeping on the bike and progressing in my own way.

Well hitting the big 4 0 this year. In the long haul of riding the plank(SK8) has been the most damaging on my body. I had major tendonitis from managing a Post Office, that at one time my arm was locked and I had to be in emergency, the inflammation was unbearable. I had some serious close to death injures riding DH. Last year was hit by a car while riding and at the Challenge park while doing a drop, had a fall,  the full suspension landed on my chest. Yeah..I used to think about riding, especially during the events I/ASC put on. The first event We put on was RLAG(Ride Like A Girl), hell in my eyes, some of the girls rode awful, since I learned to ride with guys under their vision. One had to be fully aggressive at all costs. The 80's was nasty to girl riders.
Now I don't do any aggressive riding, my body is changed. I only wish I took up flatland when in my teens or 20's, while I was heavy into martial arts and skateboarding, it would have been a good transition than DH. I still ride the KONA, hardly ride the DK,completely retired from SK8. Once in a while I go to the ASC SK8 camps, and help in skills. My pet Toy now is my Low Rider(Orange Crate) it's a good thing, I don't look my age, since I don't smoke or drink, if any drinking its a few times a year, Guinness for iron and Bombay Sapphire. I try to keep things in moderation.... They only thing I don't like is Riders don't realize how much is available for them. WE didn't have much, let alone parks. Sometimes riders cry too much about nothing...regardless, I now really enjoy and love supporting Riders especially the young when I am still able. They are awesome and should be encouraged as much as possible. Much has  happened in the past year, but I do know, I really love Flatland and all that it is.

I'll be 34 in a few weeks and I've been riding since '85.  Untill 2 years ago riding was a priority.  Now it's more of a hobby than an obsession.

I really miss jumping but 2 knee surguries in the '90 made me recognize that I'd have more longevity riding just flat.  It's been 9 years since my last surgury so the plan seems to be working.

I'm 35. I've been "riding" a long time ago (in a galaxy far far away of course) for a few years. I mean "riding"... At the time it was more reading Bicross Magazine (french mag from that time) and dreaming about the tricks I could do than trying to get tricks dialed. I quited in 92.
Life was good then. I had a good job. Little money in the bank. I was good lookin... ;D
And then in 1999 flatland stroke again. I bought a bike (a Dragonfly Uzi) and started messing aroung. I was in Paris, France at the time. Then I met the guys who were going to be good friends 'o mine : Manu Massabova, Christophe Dassie and Armin Batoumeni. At least, being riding with them everyday motivated and me made me learn tricks like cliffhangers or hitchikers... That's been the time I travelled for flatland : USA (California), Spain, Portugal, Germany, England, Holland... I even entered the Worlds in Beja in 2003 ! (I ended almost last cause I cannot manage with stress but still...).
2003, a big turn in my life. My girlfreind dumped me. I went through the hardest times of my life. Almost passed away from stupid act. Quit my job. Sold my bike and stuff for dirt cheap... Spent a few time in a hospital. 2003 is the year I would never went through ! F*uc you 2003 !!!
2005 turned to be a way better year for me. I started a new pro activity that I loved : designing and making furnitures. I'm my own boss and I do something I love... And I met THE girl. The one I made a baby with. I was away from flatland ! I was saved !!!
And then... Oh no !!!! Somebody told me I could get a Federal Fraction from FF for a few bucks... I couldn't resist and build a bike again !!!! Dam !!
So here I am, riding almost every evening, having fun again on my "child bike"...  ;D
Life is nice right now. Hope it will last !!!!

YEAH MIKE - i got psyched when i watched yer video - I'm 36 and have been busting consistently for 20+ years - it's funny ive been really mixing old with the new lately - boomerangs, decades i love that old sh*t, it rules.

Maybe I should come back when I turn 40 to the contest scene & show these kids what's up (HA HA).

I'm 36, started riding in 82 when I saw someone do a 360 in the background on 'Minder' on the telly. I had to learn..

Had a break for a few years when some twat stole my Aero Reflex. Man I loved that bike.

Good old ebay got my interest up again when I found a NOS Aero Reflex  ;D

Started doing crap oldschool shows on it back in 2003, and soon got me a decent bike.

Never stopped loving it, always preferred flat to any other style. Can't believe how much I'm still into it!

I swear, if I can still ride at 70 I will. Try and stop me.

I'm 33 i started riding in 87 my mom took me to a dyno "in search of fish tour" show and was hooked. I even went to woodward in 1988 when they had just 2 quarter pipes and a kick turn ramp lol. The best time for me was when i was at the 89 afa  bristol  comp when kevin first did the hitchiker and halfpacker.

Thanks man!

I'm working in a lot of older skool to newer skool tricks, I wanna combine a bunch of older to newer stuff... I friggin' refuse to be stuck on the front wheel rollin' around like the riding style seems to be now-a-days. Less seat grab tricks and more overall useage of the bike.

Boomerangs and decades rock! So do cherry pickers and pedal pickers! Hell yeah!!

PEDAL PICKERS? You running a coaster brake? One of my favorite old skool tricks is a PEDAL PICKER to DECADE that was a cool move - that reminds me i forgot about BACKWARDS PEDAL PICKERS, cool stuff.....

I started when I was 19 after seeing the movie rad. I learned some tricks but I was never very impresive. I basicly stopped learning after fwd rolling tricks came around. I stopped riding some where around 93 or so. Back in 2003 my son who was 13 at the time wanted to be in the X games and wanted to learn to ride. I got him a skateboard and one for my self. After being out side with him everyday I kept thinking about freestyling on a BMX bike again. I got a bike rode for a hour and saw I forgot everything. Took the bike back. Watched a video instead and saw Matt Hoffman just about kill himslef and I said to my self I didnt even fall. So 2 days latter I got the bike again learned how to ride all over again now doing some fwd rolling tricks and made www.bmxfreestyler.com

Made a TON of new friends many of wich are on this message board.

Keep on Riding!!

ooo yeah I recently got to meet Chris Day. He was one of my big insperations BITD. He was in the first underground riders that I read about in freestyln. A new BMX legends interview will come soon.

I was at Woodward in late July in '87, '88 and '89.  I definitely remember Bronco and I think Joe Ritch was the other ramp instructor in '89."

In '87 I had only heard rumors of "forward rolling tricks."  I thought it involved sort of "un-squeaking" the tire.  I walked into the barn and I saw a guy learning whiplashes and my fragile mind exploded.  Later that day I got to see scuffing for the first time.  I feel so lucky to have been at camp right as the flatland dam was breaking.

Hey everyone - I'm 30 (so barely fit in this thread, ha) and just recently started getting back into riding with my old pal, JDF here on the board. It's been beyond fun, it's been incredible. I bought a Haro F2 which I know isn't the greatest bike for flat, but for my needs it's fine. I've managed to relearn everything I could do before (we stopped about 15 years ago, after about four years of seriously heavy riding). Crackpackers (well, they're giving me a bit of a hard time, but I'm getting there), Boomerangs, double firehydrants, firehalls, front/backyards, all manner of scuffing funky chicken-esque combos, backwards whiplashes and hang fives.. funny, the same tricks that always got me still get me (why can't I do a whiplash yet? getting close, though!). It's been SO great getting back into it. The only trouble is finding time now! Wish we had all that time like we did back when we were 15. But I look forward to progressing and learning new tricks. I can't believe I've been neglecting this part of me for all these years! Now I just think about riding all the damn time...

Here's a clip of me:

36 in September, grew up on bikes, rode BMX up til probably 87. The last trick I was trying to master back then was the tailwhip, not sure when the detangler and stem with a cable hole came in but we had none of that gear, we'd take the rear brake cable and hook it to the front brake and leave it dangle, the bars could then just about spin one rotation.
After playing with mountain bikes and even buying lycra and a road bike, I just recently bought a new BMX and Matt Wilhelm's Ground Rules DVD...after 20 years I've got that damn tailwhip nailed! A few other basics are just about there. Still much to learn, and still much fun to be had. THE best money I've spent in years.
I just got my younger brother to revisit his youth and buy himself a new skateboard, we had so much fun out cruising together yesterday, love it!

You know what i miss? Zines i remember buying stylin' from dave fox at a afa comp. I could never get my hands on a aggro rag issue though.

I never got a copy of Aggro Rag either - I did buy the shirt when I was 13 and was immediatly forbidden by my folks to wear it.  : ) I don't think I ever went to one of those NBL comps without coming home with at least three zines, four shirts (2B) and a million stickers.

Happy Zine - Jimmy Deaton did this one. - Virginia What happened to that guy?
Ezine - my man Gregg Overstreet, wayy before moving to Athens, before Lifetime BMX, before riding for Diamond Back, before quitting riding - we miss you Gregg!
Slammin' - MY zine! Savannah, GA. scene!  (1989-1992)  That zine actually got me a scholarship.
Wire - Keiran Chapman/New England
The Cookbook! - Hal/2B, full size.  Meant to be a real magazine but never made it that far.  I still have mine, do you?

I never got a copy of Atomic Circle of Chaos but I heard it was good.

Funny how things are SOO different now.  These days you show up at a contest and you've already seen the tricks, the people, the bikes, everything....up to about a week beforehand on the Internet.  Back then we'd only get fuzzy photocopied UFO style photos of insane new tricks that came out months before but were just coming to public awareness.

I rode in the 80's, And had some pretty good tricks under my belt.
cherrypicker,miami hopper,decade,megaspin,around the world,lawnmower etc.
I just got back into it this year.My son rode a skateboard and I showed him some old school stuff on his xgames bike and he was hooked!!!
So now we ride together which is great, he's learning about the brotherhood of freestyle that will make him a better person/adult.
ah the good old days I miss my pastel blue and white Haro sport which I gave away many years back do to girls and cars and girls and did I mention girls. :P

P.S. Is there anyone who rides in Sacramento California???

I'm 35(10/05/72)Wow, I was kind-of embarrass to admit that I was tryin' to get back into flatland. I feared I would not be accepted from the newer crowd. I started back in 1983 and rode undying till 1991. I stopped riding due my bike (a GT Pro Performer Tour team model)had gotten stolen, At that time I had just gotten married, money was tight (still is). I couldn't afford to replace it. I alway keep it (flatland) close to my heart. It was this year, my daughter and her boyfriend kept draggin' bikes to my house wanting to see me ride like I did way back then (very hard to do on a broke down huffy..lol). My wife saw how much I missed and love riding and suggested the idea of getting back into riding. And for that I thank her, plus she say it turns her on and well thats gotta help to..lol. I'm very grateful for this thread I never knew there was so many of us old farts here. By the way the old  fart thing,  I resemble that remark..lol

P.S. glass city flats thanks for being so hospital to a total stranger, Now that's FAMILY.

ok...have a few minutes? heres my story. the (very)SHORT version.lol

well, ill be 34 in Dec. guess u can say i started tryin wheelies and side-kicks back on my banana seat Silver Fox bike after seein some older guys in the city doin bunny-hops and wheelies on their Mongooses back in like 1980 or so. i always thought what they where doin was the baddest-azz shyt id ever seen. i wanted so badly to be like them. well, not LIKE them cuz they were mostly a-holes, but i wanted to do kool tricks like they did and hop over garbage cans like they did.
it wasnt til around 1985 when i was at Lafayette St school library and came across an old bmx mag (with pics of Bob Haro,  Mike Buff, etc. doin this crazy shyt on half-pipes) that i actually said to myself, "THIS is what i want to do".
after about a year or so of beggin the moms for a BMX/Freestyle bike, she finally came home from work one day and surprised me with a trip to this shop in Belleville,NJ. she set a price limit and said i could walk out with ANY bike within that range. i think i was there for about 2 hours trying to narrow my choices. finally, i decided to go with the one bike(at the time, or in that shop) that had an ACS Rotor on it. and that nite, i slept with my 1st freestyle bike next to me, a Mongoose FS-1. it was grey and had white skyway mags. i was sooo stoked.
shortly after i saw the movie RAD, and bytch-it was on from there. every waking moment- i was on my bike trying to duplicate what RL, Eddie, Ron, Martin, etc where doing in the opening and closing scenes of the movie.
after about a year-i had most of the flat tricks down pretty good. the infinity rolls, grasshoppers, crickets, tailwhips, pogos, cherry pickers, and miami hoppers were all pretty smooth and dialed. i would ride in a HUGE b-ball court at a park just a block from my house called Independence Park. the smooothest most beautiful spot u can imagine. sorta simlilar to the Green Mile. thats where i met my 1st freestyle bud, Little Manny. he was just gettin started too.
every once in while we would see some slightly older dudes busting tricks at the other end of the park. Manny was afraid to go talk to them cuz he thought they looked too "thug" and would want to steal his bike.(he rode an 87 Mongoose Decade-teal in color and hooked up since his parents had some money) my way of thinking was different tho. whenever i saw someone riding freestyle-i got freakin excited like a hyper child locked in a candy store. so being the curious cat-i rode over to these guys one day and said "wazzup". that day i met some of the most influential riders/friends in my life. they were light years ahead of where i was. they were already rockin some rolling tricks while i was still hoppin around. so meetin them and riding with them would forever change my way of riding. riding with these guys pushed me to my limits and i began to progress much faster than before. their names/street-names were Kool-Aide, Dev, Dab, Albe, Mike, Fab, Mo, and a few names i cant remember. Kool-Aide and Dev being the most advanced riders.
we would ride at the courts all nite. even after the parks lights went off-we rode in the darkness. the only light being from the street lamps about 100 feet away. it didnt matter if we could see or not. freestyle was in our blood and in our souls. if i had wanked off too much as a youngster and went blind-i STILL would have rode my bike.
like all good things tho, the crew slowly began to fade as different lifestyles and choices came into play. some went and sold drugs. some were "gettin up" and taggin walls. some ran with gangs. and some were locked up or killed.
after a while i didnt see much of Kool-Aide or Dev either. they still rode but had other things goin on aswell.
i later met Nelson Leito. i would see him racin thru the park time to time on his BMX bike. one day he rode up to me and started asking if i knew so and so or rode at different spots outside of Newark,NJ. he told me about this spot in Clifton,NJ called "the bowl" where they had dirt jumps. so once again, my life had changed. not only did i ride a ton of flat-i now started riding a ton of dirt. i met the Dirt-Nerds there. Mike, Mark, Barry, and Anthony. these dudes flew like mofos! i also met Dave Pawson, Ralph Sinisi, Jeff Zielinski, Chris Civello, Joe Tiseo, Joe Miliotti, Rob Dolecki and soo many other awesome friends there.  they all lived in the burb areas and didnt care to come into my city, but i rode up there almost every day to ride with these people. it would be about a 10 mile ride(on my bike)from Newark to Clifton-ride all day-ride 10 miles home. meanwhile hang-5'n or peg manuling down every big hill, grinding every ledge, and jumping every curb there was on the way home. i just loved being on my bike. nothing gave me more satisfaction-not even sex gave me that kind of rush.(not knockin sex tho.lol)
one day i was hangin with my sk8er friends Marvin, and this sk8er phenom- Danny(from Ill Nino)and we got a crazy idea to steal wood from the supermarket behind my house to build some ramps in my yard. we built a few kick-ramps and a 6 foot quarter-pipe. woulda built more and better stuff, but we only stole so much wood before the owners realized someone was taking it and they put it inside.lol
after about a week of the ramps being built-the word was out that i had ramps in my yard and 2 crazy mexicans came rollin thru my alley one day. one of them being Grimaldo Duran. he would become one of the craziest street riders id ever know.
we would take a million trips into NYC to ride at Mullaly Rink and ride ramps and flat, and ride street, chase women, get drunk, see shytty bands play. it was always a good party time with these guys. unfortunately, i couldnt see my partying ways would ever tear me away from my bike. a couple years later(after moving out of Newark and into Toms River)my drinking and drug use would get the best of me.
1 week after moving from the city and into the burbs-i left my bike on my porch overnite and the next morning it was GONE! when i left the city-i had no cash and no savings(much like now.lmao)so i couldnt afford a new bike right away. it was devastating! my soul burned to ride, but i couldnt and i let depression get the best of me. i started hangin with some low-lifes back in the city and gettin wasted all the time to mask my pain and longing to ride.
before long i was just an empty shell and lost touch with the things that once made me happy and complete. FREESTYLE!
long story short-from about 96 to about 98-99 is mostly a blur. i had no bike...my soul was lost...i wasnt myself.
in about 98-99 i started gettin my shyt back together and bought a bike. a cheap deal, but nonetheless, a bike to ride. slowly i got my skills back..somewhat.
2 years or so later-i was visiting a friend back in the city. he was one of my friends from my party times but still a kool guy and friend.(at the time) he was having carpet put into his living room so he said i couldnt bring my bike in the house even tho his kitchen and hallway were NOT getting carpet. i said, "thats fkd up", but he didnt care. he was at this point in his life starting to think he was gods gift to everything so he started treating people like dung.(i just couldnt see it yet) anywho, i left my bike in my Bronco 4x4 and we ran out to Micky Ds for some quick food. when we came back 10 mins later-my bike was gone from my truck. who knows who did it...but we were only 50 feet away from the projects. duh. do that math.
again, i was crushed with no bike.
blah blah blah more long stories short...
just after, i started getting pains in my back. eventually had it checked out and found that i had a few compression fractures in a few of my vertabrae. the doc said it was slightly healed, but it was healing funny. like things werent lining up right. i was told i shouldnt do any more riding...EVER.
shorter shorter shorter story...
few years pass again and last year i didnt have as much pain as in previous years even with doing heavy labor jobs. soooo...i decided i wanted to ride again.
Kool-Aide and i got back in touch last November and in December i had a bike built. ive been riding ever since, but not hardly as much as i used to. i think in the past 10-11 months ive riden about as much as i would have done in a week back in the day. im just happy to be alive again and back on my bike. this old dog still has pain everytime he rides, and i cant seem to get my balance and groove back but i wouldnt have it any other way. even tho it hurts and im not even close to half the rider i was then-my heart is still in it 100%.
ive been able to witness York Jam, NYC Jam, King of NY, Rock and Roll Road Fools, and few other events this year and met some awesome people along the way. damn im sooo stoked to be back! i hope this lasts forever!

FREESTYLE IS IN MY BLOOD! my soul is FREESTYLE!
RIDE ON!

35, Pretty much the same story as everyone else. Started in '83 droped out in '91(kept my bike and piddled a little). Starting again  for fun and for health (I'm fat now).  I love being on the bike even if it hurts more than it used to. As soon as I started again I broke my foot so already a pause. I can't believe how many of us there are. Somebody needs to get a 30+ Jam together like spring '08.

I Got back into riding because i stumbled onto the Vintage bmx

Then, I bought a bike and ran into some oldschoolers near me now in orlando and we've been keeping up with i tas much as possible.  Wayne Keller, Chip Riggs ,and Kip Williamson are the doods that keep me motivated around here.

Great to see old guys not giving it up...

i like the idea of an "over 30" jam. i'm "just" 31 myself haha. i wish i would have ridden back in the day. i don't know my history. i will say that riding at our age tends to really impress our non riding friends. my neighbors have started working out since i moved in haha. gotta loose the beer guts  ;D

Denny from Montreal, Quebec here. Im 39 now.

Got my hands on a BMX back in 1980 and rode until 1991. Never touched a bike again until 2003, thats when a bought a new bike and decided to ride again. What inspired me was when i saw that one of my old friends John Cote aka King of Flatland guy was still riding up until 2000 i think. And of course when a saw a video of Brian Chapman it was all over i had to ride!

In 2005 i got another new bike and did not even have the chance to ride it then bam i put my back out and my knee swelled up and that was because of something else not the bike!. All kinds of problems with sciatica and lower back (it was really really ruff). I lost like 30 pounds, went from a waist 39 to 34 !

But i managed to slowly get my self out of it with physio therapy, chiro, swimming, weight training and diet! At this point i was more focussed and was able to slowly ride again by end of 2005 and more in 2006. Now in 2007 im feeling better and trying to push flatland as much as possible.

Ironically i think the riding helps me alot! if i dont ride for a week i feel it. Anyhow if i can ride again with the problems i endure daily with sciatica and back problems anyone else can!!

MOS...well son of gun! Who says flatland is dead in Ontario?!

Rob Savard(Hello Rob if you are out there, maybe "a bring back Rob to Flatland Jam", last time I spoke to him, there was a 2nd baby on the way and it was no more flatland),suggested to do an Ole school jam along with a young bucks jam 2years ago and if Action Sports Coalition would be interested. I might consider putting something like this as part of The ASC Jam at UTM in early 2008. Everyone is getting old. Holy Cow in 11days I will be 40...AH! Mind you I spend the whole year saying I'm 40 so I can get use to it, I don't really care, only means no more proving crap to anyone, its also nice to be around people who are not uptight about life and who are comfortable in their skin, after all earned every crow line around those eyes.

Anyway, lets make the whole 2008 year, an ole riders dedication year! RadDad are you 40 yet?

I am not a Flatlander, I love the art/sport as said before and I only wish I took it up after Skateboarding instead DH Riding , this has caused much body damage to my overall riding life. I still ride my Bikes though. RadDad I'm thrilled to see your wife taking on Flatland, I wish it was hopeful for me but if I want to keep riding any bike at all, not sure right now. Right now, I support through events, behind the scenes for action sports so be it that is my only way in the present.

I'm so happy to be doing an ART Show representing ASC event posters, and let me tell ya, the black and white poster with Brandon Fenton looks amazing on 18x24' photo paper, and so do the Flatland DVD nite posters....framed very nice. Many people will get to see these from all walks of life, Nov 17th. That's enough to inspire the likes of me to equally support BMX...N

I will turn the BIG 40 on December 3. My wife is planing a Jam for my Bday- still don't have a name for it yet. She has been looking around for a good riding spot to rent for the day. I am looking forward to turning 40 and still having the ablity not only to ride but to make progression with my riding.
I was hardly a very talented rider when I was in my Teens. I would try and try hard but never made alot of progress. In my late 30's I made more progression in 1 year that I ever did as a teen riding. I still have a bit more left in me

In "2008" Progression with be Great!!!!

I can't wait to see what every one is doing then. I am hoping to get a senior citizen discount for comp entery fee..hahaha I want to start up a 40 and Up Class.

Keep on Riding!!!

i'm a 33 year old who STILL can't seem to let go of my DeGroot grips(youth).  it was a schoolday in oct. of 86 when my friend brought a bmx action mag to school. i saw a Schwinn ad with Jason Parks doing a lawnmower in front of a big Godzilla statue, and i said to jim, "dude, i'm gonna learn to do tricks on a bike like that." got my first trick bike on Christmas Eve- a schwinn predator freeform-z. i was 13 at the time. over the past 20 years, i got into all forms of freestyle-flat, street, ramps, park, dirt. now as my body has grown more ache-prone, i basically only ride flat. of course, over those 20 years, i had gotten into some other things, and liquor was probably the worst. it attracted me away from my bike. dang devil juice. not completely away, but enough to say i was more of an alcoholic than a bike rider. i finally pulled my head out of my ass and became a quitter! yup, i quit DRINKING! and boy howdy, let me say riding with a clear head-there is nothing better! i also had a letter printed in the dec.

Don't say that the only way that you will quit riting would be because you go blind; that's unfair to say as for I am doing it now.

44 years old. Damn, I'm 44. It sounds really old when you say it out load. Anyway. Started Flatland riding less than a month ago. My wife bought my bike for me for my 44th b-day because she didn't know what else to get me and was tired of  listening to me say "Someday i'm gonna get one of those flatland bikes and learn some cool tricks." Well, today is the day!!!!

It's nice to see other old farts out there beating their shins up instead of sitting on the couch yelling at the TV about how they could play better "Fill in Sport Here" than those A-holes.

Keep in up guys and remember it's Olds Cool not Old School.

I just turned 36 on the 20th. I started riding flat around 1983 when I saw fred blood doing power mowers and lawnmowers at Harbor BMX race track here in san Pedro CA. Soon after, I met Mike Buff and started riding flatland and gave his half pipe a try (not such a good idea at the time). I was fortunate enough to ride with guys like Pete Agustin (disgustan agustin) that is, Chris Day, El Cid, Frank Garrido (one of my all time favorite memories of any persons personality as a youth the guy was hilarious), Craig Grasso, and just about anyone who rode at the original redondo spot called The Spot (right next to capt kidds fish market). I actually rode there at the underground last weekend. Had a good little 2 hr solo session. I stopped riding for awhile around 1990 when I went to college. I brought my bike when I moved and watched it collect dust for about two years. Then I rode street and dirt for a short stint just to stay on a bmx bike, rode dh mountain bikes for a awhile attaining many injuries and good memories. Right around 1995 I started riding again (flat). In 1996 I started working for odyssey and was very active in the bmx/flatland world up until about 2002 when my family began to grow. We had a baby girl and I quit my childhood dream job to find work closer to home as well as less hours to spend with my new found joy. I went from riding 4-6hours a day to barely being able to get 4-6 hours in a month. Basically I had stopped riding again for about 9months straight and then the car accident happened. Four of the discs in my lower lumbar(back) were crushed and are now miss shappened. My upper thorax (neck) suffered basically the same thing but the discs are worse and when I move certain ways they push into the nerve along my spine which causes me to lose all feeling on the left side of my body. The accident and th e condition I was in after really put everything into perspective for me. I now find time to ride. I promissed myself if I could ride flat again I can do anything I used to. I for sure don't ride like I used to. I have lost just about anything spinning, I have changed my bike setup, everything has been affected. I will say that my nemisis trick has always been hang 5's. Since the accident I have added that trick to my bag. As well I lift weights everyday and do tons of stretching daily even if I don't ride. I now have three children they rule, my oldest girl just turned 5 and I bought her her first bike. It has training wheels and she is learning peg wheelies on them.

Sup all, Im 30 years old, about to hit 31 in 3 months.Im American but live in Okinawa Japan where i ride with the Locals. Originally from Long Beach California, I had many bmx bikes as a kid and teen years.. my favorite was a GT Performer and a Diamond Back i had in 93. Im a snowboarder/Skater by nature... But during the summer while living in alaska in 2002 i needed a hobby .. decided to buy a REDLINE C-Note and start some street riding.
I soon bought a motorcycle and focused on that in the summers... While in Japan i have been into cars.. (S14silvia for you car people). Well, i wanted a change.. took my bike back out and met up with a local flatlanding in my neighborhood. Went to the local biek shop "RideHot" a few weeks ago and he was talkin about how heavy my bike was and that if i bought the parts i wanted he would be ripping me off because i could buy a complete for a hundered or so more... 2 days later i bought a flatland bike and have been practicing every day since.. i love it.. and im getting some of the old moves back.. slowly but surely.

I used to be HUGE into cars... building turbo Mitsubishis...racing them. I still do it but not nearly like I used to.

Simply put cars aren't NEARLY as fun and satisfying to the soul like flatland is. I know you know what I mean.

Im 36 and use to race BMX at the local track here (Oakland NJ). I had a local shop sponsorship and my friends built a track for us to practice on everyday.

Lot of time passed and now Im 36 and overweight. Three years ago I sold my Thruster Tri-Pod from 1983. I regretted it and thought I should fix up my 1982 Supergoose. After it was fixed up I started riding it a little this year. I got my hands on an FBM Angel of Death frame I just did a build on. But I dont have a local track anymore as Im in Nutley NJ. Im not sure I want to do street. I mostly just want to try tricks and flatland looks pretty ideal to get back into BMX and try something different. Plus I saw that Luna frame and fell in love with it recently.

So here I am. Im so looking forward to the spring. Whats my first trick going to be?!?!?1

HA! What's up guys? I'm 35. I started riding flat in 86' and stopped in 90'. I got back into in 2003 after watching some X-games flat contests. My jaw had dropped to the ground when I saw some of pros' riding. The reason for the jaw dropping was because I thought flat had died out in the 90's. Then I started looking at the bmxtrix website, when it was up and running, and found out that the person who started the website, Paul Vail, was someone I use to ride with. Pretty much after looking at vids after vids after vids on the web, I said MAN I NEED TO GET BACK INTO FLAT!!! It was still in my blood after all these years of not riding. I even amazed my wife. She didn't know my old butt could do tricks on an 18.75 frame. LOL!  Within a week of just messin' around I was doing decades, whiplashes, and hangfives like I never left the "game". It was like Michael Jordan when he retired then came back to basketball. THE FIRST TIME, that is. I guess what made me stay into it till this day is I'm not scared to do the tricks that I use to do because I still know the balance points. Hell, I didn't even rack my self doing my first decade after all those years of "retirement". So to end this, NEVER GIVE UP ON WHAT YOU LOVE TO DO! NOT MATTER WHAT YOUR AGE! If flat is in you, IT WILL ALWAYS BE IN YOU!    PEACE!

I'm soon to be 44 and am getting ready to either build a bike or get a complete. I started riding in 80 diong the race thing but we had no track in town so I kind of gravitated to freestyle. We did everything from ramp work to flatland. I rode until 89 when some kid came up on my porch and offered me an unbelievable amount of money for my bike so I took it and bought a car. I really miss riding because it was something that touched my sole in a way. I could go out and just shut out the whole world and be in my own universe. I'm sure you have been there too.

I have a 6yr old boy now and I taught him his first trick (endo) and saw the determination he had  and thrill in his face when he pulled it off just made me to want to ride again. I would love to ride with my boy and teach each other tricks.

Peace

35 y.o. here. Been riding since 88, but stopped for about 7 years [silly me] due to other commitments. Married with 4 kids, did a few trades
[fitting, machining, welding and floor sanding/polishing], run a business, attend most comps n jams in Australia
[Australia is about the same size as mainland USA], and ride every weekend. I still think my riding sux, but I always think of my motto
"the amount of time you spend on your riding = the exact level of your progression", then I realise again that weekend riders will always struggle.
I am convinced flatland is the hardest sport there is, and thats why I have respect for ALL flatlanders, both am and pro.
Flatland forever.

Edit. I forgot to mention my 10 y.o. son is trying a bit of flat with me, but his current bike is a 17 kg Diamond back, and its incredibly heavy in proportion to the weight of a 10 y.o, so I am setting him up with a light flatland bike, hopefully around 11 kgs. I will post pics when i get it [just waiting for my frame].

35 here.  I guess I never got too far away from my bike since I started back in '86.  Back then everyone in my circle of friends rode everything.  I favored vert.  I guess I still do to a certain extent but I'm in a position where I can't afford to get hurt.  I recently changed bikes from my 94 Standard Lengthy to an Eastern Dragon.  They have pretty much the same geometry but my new setup is at least 5lbs lighter.  For me,  its a good all-purpose bike.  Its got a 20" tt so for all you pure flatlanders it may seem big,  but I just love it.  Right now I am doing about 75% flatland and 25% park or dirt.  Flatland progression is extremely satisfying but nothing,  to me,  compares with the feeling of a big fat clean aerial.  In another post I started recently,  I stated that I had rolled a hang5 for the first time since 1990.  I am mixing together getting my old stuff back with the learning of new stuff.

WOW!  I saw this dude practicing out there on that corner every other weekend or so b/c I lived right down that street about 400m.  I had no idea he was 37 and riding for 15 years.  Oh how I wish I was bitten by the flatland bug back then.

I'm not near 30 yet, I'm 24, and I grew up tearing up my neighborhood with my buds on our BMXs.  I still have the '95 GT Speed Series that I saved up my hard earned allowance for, and rode it last weekend actually for the first time in 10 years.  Never actually got into racing, I just thought it was the bike to have back then...now I'm ready to make the transition to flatland, b/c I always loved watching freestylers do tricks back in the day.  "RAD" got me into it all, for sure!  God speed, you older folks...hopefully I'm in your shoes someday and can show my kid something rad on his bike.

Well, look here...I found the old man thread.  Am I too late to join the club?

I'm 36.

My name is Tod, and I have been riding freestyle(we all remember freestyle here) since 1985.  Rode everything up to around 91, and then dropped flat riding to pursue street and ramps mostly.  I took a few years off(five years) from riding to do a little time in the "Big House"...I just couldn't get along with authority.  Once I got out, I had to change my priorities a bit, so I got back into riding.  I've been riding flatland again for about 6 months because I decided that I was tired of wrecking myself riding street and ramps.  Ironically, after I started riding flat again, I destroyed my knee AGAIN.  No more ramp riding for me.  Three knee surgeries and one to go(a full knee replacement), and I refuse to give up the kid's bike.  I dare anyone try to take my bike away from me.

Does anyone remember the General add..."If freestyle was outlawed only outlaws would ride"?  Me, in 1987...

I would change that quote to "Only Outlaws Ride Freestyle". cuz there is just no room for IF.

The best one is from Women of Freestyle or what was WOFBMX:

The best one is from Women of Freestyle or what was WOFBMX:

"Real Women Ride 20 inches"

You're on a role lately...and always have me crackin' up.

i'll be 31 in a couple of months...rode dirt bikes for a while starting around 1990 and stopped in the mid 90's.  got back into bmx in 2000, and decided i wanted to ride flatland.  i've been riding ever since and I don't plan on slowing down anytime soon.

Let's see-I'll be 44 this year, started racing when I was 13. Was there for the dawn of "freestyle" and racing was soon an afterthought. Saw the first ever freestyle tour at Bike World in Howell in '81 w/ Bob Haro & Bob Morales-still have the poster autographed by both! If I had been riding all this time, I might be halfway decent, but I've had other things take me away from riding for extended periods (playing in touring bands, racing cars, having a child, surviving cancer, running a full time business,)  but the cycle is coming back around and I'm feeling like riding again. Never been a "natural" but it's still always fun, even if I can't do a ton of stuff.

Currently running a business doing signs/lettering/pinstriping and racing small cars. If the weather in NJ will cooperate, maybe I can get some riding in!

Dude, what?  Wow.  You have been around since day one.  Man, that is cool.  Well, we are glad to have you on board, and have you still playing on kid's bikes.  That's rad.

Just out of curiosity, are you riding a newer designed bike?

My friend Gary started riding when he was 38,39...went on to do very well at racing, and still rides the trails a bit at the age of 54.

Well I'm 39 years old and I started riding 20 inch bikes in '73. Tricks would soon follow. I raced Bmx for a few years but when I was 13 I got into "freestyle". I rode for the next several years with all kinds of riders from all over indiana and the midwest. I slowed down alot in 2000 due to a divorce and visitation problems with my daughter. I went to nursing school in '06 and in '08 I entered the straight outta Indy jam, 'cause I new it would make me ride. I got back in touch with alot of the Indy guys and have been riding/competing again ever since. hope to see some or all of you guys soon. L8r, Joe

I've got a Quamen G3, if you consider that newer and a bowls (just posted it in the bike pics thread-gotta get a recent pic of the G3) Also in the garage: a '86 Haro sport, an '84 Trickstar, a half built alum 2-Hip Pork, a Rigid F&F and Cook Bros & Vector bars. Not a Tuff wheel to be found anywhere, though.

32yrs old, just split with my wife, and back into the single life again :)  The best thing about it..??   I can go ride for hours on end, and NO one is there to make me feel guilty about it..!!  Yay!!  lol
Rollin' as hard and as often as I can.  Just nailed brakeless decades off the back tyre the other day, and flying to the other side of Australia on Wednesday night for Round 4 of the National Amateur Flatland series.  Freedom, baby..!!
Us 30+ fellas ain't getting any younger, so while I'm still single with loads of time on my plate, I want to ride as much as I can and achieve my Flatland goals before the next relationship and possibly kids tie me down.  My ultimate trick to learn..??   Pedalling Death Trucks..!!

It's funny how young girls think we look appealing from afar, busting tricks, then they get closer and realise 'Oh, he's old'.   lol

Got into it in 1987,but been riding hardcore since 1991 though.

I'm 35. I began in 1995 in Tampa, FL. I saw this guy Mike riding at the USF campus parking lot and got hooked up. That same year moved to Puerto Rico for 3 years to work as a social worker and met some flatland riders (Pedro, Piky, Randy, Moncho) and kept riding for a few years until I moved to Miami. I tried for a few months but work and women kept me busy so I gave my Standard Shorty away to a church and 10 years later I'm back into it. I went to the Voodoo Jam last year to watch and saw Moncho and the rest is history. Now I'm really into it, riding almost every day. Flatland changed a lot from 1998. I noticed that at the Voodoo jam. Didn't know who 98% of the pros were. My biggest regret in life is ever quitting riding and the time I met this drunken stripper at a club and like a good samaritan I dropped her off and didn't make a move or anything...Ha! This year I'm taking my bike to the Voodoo Jam so hope to meet new people.

Just turned 40 a few months ago. Started dirt jumping/BMX racing in the 70s and became way more interest in the BMX Action trick riding how tos by Haro and R.L.

Bought the Haro how to book and me and my buddy tried to learn every trick in there, including vert and "trick ramp" kickturns.

Live to see the advent of pegs, potts mods and rotors/gyros. I rode flat and vert until 87 when I had too many busts/scary experiences and gave up vert for good. Thats when the forward rolling stuff started busting out. I rode until about 90-1 or whenever hitchhikers had just been unleashed. At that point was done with school and had to work full time, be responsible and all the guys I rode with went off to college. Pulled the bike out every once and awhile and busted a funky chicken or steamroller here and there between 92-2004, but I pretty much thought flat was dead. Then I found pedal bmx forumn, met some guys in my area and started riding again.

Definitely took some time to limber after that break and gettin tricks back didnt come easy.
But I still try and have fun doin it.

Hey all,

am turning 30 in 2 months, does that count??

Used to ride alot of street here in oz from age of 14 to 19, never amazing but had a lot of fun and rode daily. Had a bad accident on a ramp and aquired "THE FEAR" which prevented me doing anything after that as i freaked constatnly.

Never rode flat but wanted to get back into bmx without the thought of snapping my bones so easily again and figured flat would help this.
Now loving it, but no were near enough time to ride as balancing work and 2 babies under 2 takes what little daylight i see away haha

Currently on a dragonfly Uzi but am in process of building my "dream bike". Progressing so slowly its almost non existent BUT im loving all of it

Damn-that's awesome! Myself and a group of about 10 or so riders (Skyview Park-then known as the "Tot Lot" locals) rode from Toms River all the way to Howell for the show. On the way back all we could talk about was building ramps and suddently racing wasn't as important to us. I think we spent most of the day jumping up the side of the big jump after the hairpin. Ahh-the good old days!

Was hoping to make it down to Brick, but I'm pinstriping at a Harley dealership on Saturday in South Jersey.

I'm 37 and started in '84. Flatland back then was rock walks and framestands. And Eddie Fiola, RL Osborne and Martin Aparijo were your heroes. I quit in '88, and made a return in '94, to find new heroes: Kevin Jones, Dennis McCoy and Chase G. After not following the scene from 2000 to 2007, I was surprise to find out that riding and bikes have really changed. GT almost dissapeared-- along with the heavy bikes. Street riders use race bike(no matter what anyone says they're racing).
Now I'm back and am not going to quit. My 7yrs old son is riding with me and having fun.

Have fun
AJ

Hey now-
Hendrix will ALWAYS be cool, and fullsize vans with cool paintings and a mattress in the back? You think those lame? Come on...everyone that had one was boning chicks in the back of those at their local drive in. Plus, if riders were driving them, it would save them a few bucks for finding a room at York Jam! ;-)

38- These shins have seen more abuse than a skinny blonde kid in Federal prision. Today you can go on u-tube and just pick& choose! It's pretty cool, but there's something to be said for being part of the pioneering days. I still probably know more lawnmower variations than anyone! Touring around w/ the lucas bros. circus(NAFA)- wishing we had just 1 sk8park, making due w/ what we had or made. My son is 14, he has 6 parks to choose from, and does big 360's, etc... The 2nd gen. is upon us. Hpoefully ALL of bmx continues to grow& prosper.
It still makes me laugh when I see things like figure sk8ing w/ so much prestige, publicity& $. People just walk by when there's gnarly flat sessions going on( I guess they can't fathom what's really going on).

I'm 39, and I got back into Riding a year ago, after getting in touch with some old friends that I rode with BITD. I started riding freestyle in 84 on a HUTCH Pro Raider, then got a GT Pro Performer with a gyro and axle pegs.
I rode steady until 95, when I moved to Seattle, and slowly began to ride less and less each year unil 99 when my son was born.

Now I ride when it's not raining real hard, and I don't have a bunch of stuff 2 do. I plan on riding until my body can't handle it anymore.

So, recently at the Texas Flatland Roundup, we had a 30+ non-expert/non-pro class...and it seemed to be pretty popular.

What do some of you old guys think?  I thought it was a good idea...perfect for someone like me(36) who is just getting back into flatland.

Would you guys like to see more of this kind of class at contests?

This post makes me want to explore the "Cougar" in me...LOL!

I think actions sports has hit over the 30 mark and hey...still riding mode...speaks volumes and documents how things have changed, its not so much the youth based sport as it used to be...N

Great idea, to have a 30+ class on its own at a comp, but then you have the likes of "Buffman" who can hold up good competing with 18+

That's why it's 30+ NON-EXPERT/NON-PRO.  Huffman doesn't count...he would be sandbagging the class.  I think this class is aimed at 30+ riders who dropped out for a bit, and wouldn't mind entering a comp, but have no place in a beginners class and would get killed riding at the expert level.

Tod, it certainly is "a bit".

Beginner/Expert whatever the skill..great that you all are riding. People in the industry or what not need to see/know that this just proves riding is blood thick...we don't stop even with all the changes in our personal lives be it up or down. Once a rider always a rider, the only thing that will do us in, is death...even after death a park manifests in a riders name.

Keep On, Keepin'On... -_-

I'm 40, started doing flatland I guess around 83-84 after realizing I wasn't much of a racer. I stopped riding for the most part around 1988 pretty much because I didn't have anyone to ride with . I've always loved watching the X-games and things like that, and always missed riding. A couple of weeks ago while surfing Youtube and just googling various things I came across a picture of my last bike (not the same one, but one that had been restored). I'm always looking for some kind of project to do, so I called my son and asked him if he still had that bike I gave him. He did. So I went over and picked up my 1987 General Osborn Pro, which I'm in the process of restoring. I became addicted in about 5 minutes into working on it, and decided I wanted to ride again. I've since bought 2 other bikes to work on/ride, and hope to build a new school flatland bike over the cold New England winter.

I haven't actually had a chance to ride because all my time has been spent working on the bikes, and working my job, but I can't wait to get back out there, throw on the Ipod and just have a good time. I've recently been diagnosed with diabetes and my doctor told me the best thing for me is exercise, and riding my BMX bike beats staring at the wall while on a treadmill any day.

I get alot of strange looks and chuckles when I tell people what I'm working on and that I plan on riding again, but I don't care. I'm pumped to get going again and that's all that matters.

Good little story Rad......best of luck with the riding.

Make sure to eat lots of high energy food (to keep up the energy to ride), it will probably help with the diabetes too (my dad was diabetic, I am lucky so far).  The more I eat the better I feel, like when I was 20-something again.  Lots of trail mix, granola bars, fruits/juices & honey all the time keep me going.

I can't believe how many people have similar stories of getting back into riding as I do.
There are so many people who used to ride in the late 80's that took 20 years off getting back into it. Maybe it's a mid life crisis thing with most of us refusing to let their mind get old.

Either way it's a great way to exercise while having fun doing so.

The only bummer with me is riding alone, I used to love riding with other guys encouraging each other, it helps with the progression.
