Title: today i bought a pushbroom
Post by: 2flat2furious on May 19, 2010, 02:18:19 AM
So after getting my third flat in a week and two pieces of glass stuck in my hand I had to dig out with an exacto knife in the course of filming for my battle videos I finally sucked up 20 bucks and went to lowes and bought myself a pushbroom. I proceeded to spend about an hour sweeping up the area of the lot that I ride in. All in all I think I swept up around 25-30 lbs worth of dust, sand, and gravel from my spot. I didn't go back out to ride, but I can't wait to see how different is is now that it isn't so rough. Here are some pictures I took on my phone of the kind of semi-before and after shots.

I had gotten most of the rubble out of the way around this point, but you can still see the line where I haven't gotten to yet.

That's a huge freakin' crack down the middle that I can't cross without getting stuck on. That's about as far as I go in my links and for how big the place is, I really don't have a lot of room. The section on the right is where I ride and it is cleaned off at that point. The section on the left is where I used to ride before it started getting REALLY bad. The left isn't swept, the right is. Big difference!

You can still see where there are "lines" of dust and what not in the lot that I just didn't get. I was exhausted at this point because I really had to press down into the asphalt to get all the gravel out. After a good rain what is left will end up dispersing throughout the area anyway and it won't be as prominent.

This is my tire right now. It's about 5-6 days old. I usually change it when pieces start coming off of it. But it's cool because....

I keep a lot of spares.

Still need to pick up all the clutter from papers and rummaging through books and other things after my final exams, but I will get around to that later.

Anywho, yeah, that's my spot, my tires, and my plight.

I still think its amazing how fast you can kill tires riding on that spot.
lol
I swear tire companies can just send you the prototypes to try out in that lot....

Odyssey sent me the plytes yeaaaaaars ago. They came with some silver sharpie marker on the side that just said "P-LITE" next to the odyssey logo. They are actually worse for that spot than regular G's because they're slightly softer.

Dang dude...your spot looks really rough.  And that tire...wow!

I find that keeping spots swept and clean is good for "business" anyhow...your less likely to get the boot.  We keep the OG pretty clean, and the county(who's garage it is) seem to not care that we are there.  It's cheap, clean-up labor for them.

Looks good.
I use a Gas powered leaf blower on the street in front of my house, fast and very effective.

Shyt. I've been looking all over for my push broom lately because I've been working in my wood shop a lot this spring. Now I remember where it went. I left it at the ball court back in November!

I keep a pushbroom in the car with me.  The courts have tons of acorns and leaves and such that clutter up my spot depending on the season.  Bird sh*t has been my current nemesis.  WTF!

I`ve been thinking of doing this to an abandoned tennis court I found.

I am a very lucky rider to have a spot where the city cleans up the place every few days with a industrial grade blower and a vacuum attached to some weird looking go-cart thing.  Even though I still have to hope for a steady rain every now and then.

"Rick, your car was parked behind my minivan so I took it to the mall...it smells like gas...what's the leaf blower doing in here? I can't fold the seat down because your bike's in the trunk...is that blood on the steering wheel!?!?"

Sorry Honey.

Man....your tire wear is nuts. I've always heard you carve and wondered how fast they wear down.

I push broomed today @ the LB spot. bo's got a nice one. Some bum decided to smash his mickey's 40 at our spot, i was picking up pieces all day even after the sweep.

Two of my buddies came by the other day to practice some tricks or dick around at the b-ball court a block from my house. We started out riding on the b-ball court, then moved to the skate park 25 yards away then back to the b-ball court.

Some stupid teenage girl was babysiiting these two small kids (they couldn't have been older then 5 or 6,maybe even younger) and right as my buddy Caleb rides in front of where she is sitting she throws and smashes a glass bottle five feet in front of him...

He yelled at her and she said something like "it's only glass" to which I replied back "yeah it's only glass, which will pop our tires, and if I happen to fall down doing a trick I could get it lodged in my hand or anywhere on my body!"

I then went on to tell her that tires aren't cheap,at least no flatland tires..

Such a dumb child, such a bad role model for those little kids...had she thrown it in front of me I would of grabbed her by her arm and walked her across the street to the police substation!

TJ...I would have rode that lot after you cleaned it,in fear of coming back the next day or so only to find it all messed up again.

I had work 45 minutes later so I wouldn't of had time. I also hadn't patched my tube at that point either. Seeing as I just did that now, I'm still going to have to wait 3 more hours to ride until I can go out when the cars are clear. Sigh.

I would have given her two choices.....clean it all up or citizens arrest for litter and vandalism. That or a bitchslap to the FACE.

Girls sometimes have extra stupidity because our culture frowns upon feminine violence. I think we are equal and a girl should get her ass beat for the same sh*t a guy would get his ass beat for.

So today was my first session out on the lot post-brooming.

WOW.

Night and day. I'm still going to go through tires like crazy, but it's clear from about 3 hours of riding on one tire that the wear is more even, and it's not nearly as rough. I kept goofing up on things because the surface feels so much faster.

Sooooooooo stoked I bought a broom.

Man girls have always had extra stupidity (not all of them, but a lot of them).

Unfortunately I cannot agree with your thinking and to be honest (and please don't take this too personal),if I saw any guy I would have to walk up and stomp some ass...that is a big no no in my book .No man should hit a woman, unless that woman is trying to kill him,and even then there are other things a grown man can do to overpower a female if need be.

TJ,glad you got to ride your lot without it getting all f*cked up again before you could.

I find myself cleaning broken glass off the b-ball court from time to time...how much you want to bet it was all done by that little girl...

So I cleaned up my room today. Get jealous because yes I can ride in here lolololol.

The lot is so much nicer now and my tires wear down at a much slower rate. I really should have cleaned up that place a while ago. It just was really bad because of all the snow we got this past winter that tracked all the sand and gravel into my riding area.

it is hard to tell what kind of surface that is. Looks like a brick/tile surface which would awesome to have as vinyl is kind of awkward to ride on. Definitely want to see some vids of riding in there and not breaking any windows.

Nice,I'm jealous...I live in florida and just the other day I commented to somebody about how I was about ready to waste money on a climate controlled storage unit....I may be florida native, but this heat gets to even me.It's no fun going out for a ride and starting to sweat before you even get the one block it is to your riding spot.

let me know if anyone can find a super-wide push broom anywhere...

sometimes I try sweeping the court up at my place but after about 10 minutes i realize that i have just waisted 10 minutes of my time and if i keep up with even trying to sweep 1/2 the court i will of ended up waisting my entire session.  It doesn't help that someone decided last summer that it would be a good idea to install a sand volleyball court right next to what was already a slick b ball court, with no wall dividing the two.  Windy day = sandy court = slide outs when riding and broken ankles when defending. >:|   no not literally broken.

I need a Biiiiger broom... like 5-6 feet wide would be awesome.. heh

i love my tennis court...people rarely play tennis there, and since it's part of a park district, it's ALWAYS clean. like, even in winter some times.

Not likely. The town I live in is VERY small...1.4 square miles small,0.9 square miles of it is land, the other 0.5 square miles is water lol.My family has been here a long long time,I have had family in office (mayors and commissioners) and I know people who are currently in office at the city hall (which is where the sub station is located).

1, you spelled billy's name wrong. and 2, i recently found an AMAZINGLY nice spot, about 10 to 15 times larger than my current spot, perfectly even, and smooth all the way around. its a practically unused full street hockey court or whatever they're called, and the surface is amazing. like a tennis court but more spacey. too bad kids actually use it to play hockey  but they can get mad cause those skates f*ck up the surface WAY more than my tires do, and theres no signs posted. maybe i can actually get some of my tricks down now
(oh and this is on topic cause my old spot was at a school, immediately bordering a childrens SAND playgroud)

So after about a week of riding at my newly cleaned spot I've noticed that my tires, while still wearing out pretty fast, and wearing out more "evenly". Usually pieces actually get ripped off the tire around this point and holes show up in the tread, but right now it's actually getting to the point where the center is smooth rather than perforated. Pretty stoked on this tbh.  -_-

Want to really change your spot?  Go to home depot and buy a 5 galon bucket of blacktop sealer and a brush.  Spread that out and it'll smooth up the area by a million times.  It'll be fast, easy to clean and way less harsh to your tires.

I did this to a spot at the York Jam years ago.  Ask anyone who was there about the difference it made.

I was there but I didn't notice a huge difference at the time. It also isn't my parking lot to be messing around with so I don't know if they'd be okay with me sealing their blacktop...

All blacktop sealer does is turns perfectly good asphalt into slick as sh*t garbage....please avoid.

Those tires really make me appreciate riding in tennis courts.....unreal.

Just curious as to why you bought heaps of the p-lyte version rather than the harder rubber? Did you get them at a massive discount?

Also I reckon riding in a small spot encourages the rider to adopt a cooler style, and way more spacial awareness, so it's not all that bad surely. I'd hate to go through tyres that quickly though..
