Yea, it just sux seeing beginners riding the "up-to-date" frames and parts and riding brakeless and not doing too good.  Just because it's what everyone ELSE is doing.  My thought is that you NEED to learn bike control first.  And brakes is where you start.  If you don't want to use your brakes, then DON'T GRAB THEM!!!!!  I think Chase IS a trend setter and is ahead of everyone's time and will always be.  I guess now-a-days it's just the younger state of mind.  You have to have the latest and greatest parts, the latest clothes, and try to do the latest tricks.  I know of guys that can do all the forward rolling on the front wheel tricks and can't even do a decade.  I guess this is why I'm loosing interest.

What kind of frame is Chase riding?

I asked him that question in an email. He said it's a frame KHE made for him. He said it is NOT his Flatware prototype.

Not to be rude, but telling people that they're riding the wrong way (which is your own personal paradigm of what riding should be) goes completely against the grain of what you're saying here.

You guys are going off on trendy guys, who are the trendy guys putting out videos right now that you have a problem with enough to know what they're doing is "wrong" or however you want to say it compared to Chase?

Gonna get this thread to 4-5 pages before you know it!  -_-

Stubble I don't think it's anything to lose interest over. You're still free to ride however you like and I think there are a lot of other guys out there like you so you're not lacking for support here on Global. Things change man and kids are kids. There was no shortage of these types when we were kids too... theres always a ton of crappy practitioners in any hobby or sport in any given era. I try not to get too hung up on it because there is so much more awesome stuff going on in the flat world right now that overrule the BS. Tricks like the decade are still very well represented in serious flatland. Those kids will prob learn them eventually if they haven't already given up the bikes entirely for girls, cars, or partying.

+1

Definitely not anything to lose interest over.  Stubble, man...this is FREEstyle.  You and I know this, just do what you do man.  I still rock both brakes...and Matt Wilhelm and Dowker just won their classes at Fight with Flight, rockin' both brakes.  There are those that still ride with both brakes, I just think you don't see them postin' up all over the internet to much.

Oh, also...I ride with a guy(Alex) who is 16 and is an amazing up and comer.  He rides a Strowler and loves to learn old tricks too.  I've seen him doing framestands, bar-hops, etc.  Those kinds of old tricks, plus any and every kind of new rolling/pumping combo you can think of.   He's learning decades now.

But yeah, love these videos.  Chase is definitely always steppin' up the game.  Ironically, he basically started the no brake trend, and now is going back to revisit riding with brakes to master even more tricks/links.  With out a doubt in my mind, this man's bag of tricks is deeper than any other flatlanders.

I mean I kind of am. These older dudes always tapdance around what they mean by trendy newer riders, but always refuse to mention who these guys are that upset them soo much. What's really ironic is that subscribing to the idea that Chase's style is somehow superior is the same thing as adhering to any trend. So either these guys are the pot calling the kettle black or they are too scared to actually mention who it is they dislike so much.

I agree with Stubble, I am so sick of being "Force Fed" what I should ride and wear,it's still Freestyle ,Ride how you want and Ride what you want.

Most of the guys that post up web videos are young guys that just learned the newest treandiest tricks or got the newest greatest bike parts.  There are PLENTY of other dudes out there just riding that don't bother to tape stuff or go on the forums much.   Either they just don't care for the whole online community or maybe they just prefer to spend their freetime riding and aren't too worried about the latest video to drop from Japan?
Rad Dad, don't lose faith man.  Keep riding for the sake of riding and enjoying yourself.  Maybe you contribute TOO much to the online community and need to take a break to keep from getting burned out?  Your efforts are definitely appreciated, but at the end of the day I would rather know you are out riding and enjoying it than stressing about editing a jam video.   ;D

I just find it funny these old guys have so much hate for being "force fed" anything new (which still makes no sense to me since the only fashion police in flatland are the ones bitching about the lack of decades and brakes) yet can't point to a single person on the internet they think is basically curling up to every fashionable trend and whim.

In other words, they should be very quiet and not speak about trends and their aforementioned problems with them until they have the balls to point to what they're talking about. Otherwise it's just old dudes being grumpy old dudes. Either they're okay with being grumpy old dudes as it stands now or they have lots of people in mind and are worried someone might think they're talking sh*t if they mention those particular people.

Basically it's the cowards way of talking massive amounts of sh*t on whole segments of the riding world without being held responsible for it, and it's insanely funny to watch them get defensive about it instead of just being men about it and clarifying.  -_-

I'm old and trendy. I get ribbing all the time and it makes me laugh.  Aside from pure originality, everything now or in the past could be compartmentalized as part of some "trend".   If being 'trendy' means staying current with what is going on right now, then I fully support that; as well as quality that holds up through the years.  To be dismissive to any style of riding old or new is a non-progressive attitude.  I thought Chase's video was beastly. very, very nice.

THE TRENDS HE SET WAS IN PUSHING THE LIMIT...NOT DOING OTHER

I liked the nose pivot scuffs, but TBH it seems like Chase has turned back the clock in terms of tricks and style etc lately, if you compare this to say "The function victim" with allot of riding and balancing / breakless stuff. I guess he is more into scuffing at the moment?

Just an observation.

This doesn't make it ANY less difficult. That last switch he did from backyard to megaspin on the frame with the bars backwards decade out is crazy crazy crazy hard.

Did I say it was any less difficult?
My observation was more so a change of style, almost reverting to that seen on Dorkin / balancing act.

I would like to add though, that nearly every chase thread on here is a hot bed of views.
While any other rider can have a video posted up on here, and posters can be openly critical in any mannerism, the chase fanboyism is scary.

If threads involving chase are going to be such a hot bed of discussion, maybe its better if a person who posts up a flick, locks the topic immediately so that no comments can be made.

I TALK TO HIM ON A REGULAR BASIS AND FUNNY TJ
THAT KEV HATES YOU AS MUCH AS I HATE YOU AND SO
DOES CHASE...YOU MADE SOME BIG ENEMIES THERE KIDDO.

HIS RIDING JUST EXPANDS EVERYTIME I SEE A VIDEO OF HIM
AND HOPEFULLY A NEW VIDEO OF HIM WILL BE POSTED SOON.

BY THE WAY HE RIDES A KHE THAT WAS CUSTOM BUILT FOR HIM
AND THERE ARE NEW ODYSSEY FLATWARE PARTS COMING OUT
THAT ARE DESIGNED BY HIM..HE DID NOT TELL ME WHAT AS IT
IS TOP SECRET BUT HE TESTS EVERY PARTS HE DESIGNS AND
GETS BACK TO THE HEAD DESIGNER AT ODYSSEY. HE IS VERY
PICKY ON THINGS AND WANTS THE PARTS TO BE PERFECT AND
THAT IS WHY THE FLATWARE STUFF IS SO GOOD.

I LOVE THE FLATWARE CRANKS AND TOLD HIM THAT AND IF I WAS
NOT USING THE MAGNASIUM PROFILE CRANKS THEN I WOULD
PROBABLY USE THE ODYYSEY FLATWARE CRANKS OR QUAMEN
CRANKS!

WE ARE LUCKY TO HAVE A PERSON LIKE CHASE DESIGNING PARTS
THAT ARE REALLY GOOD PARTS AND SUCH AN INFLUENCE FOR THE
YOUNGER RIDERS! BESIDES HE IS A REAL GOOD FRIEND OF MINE
AND I DEFEND MY FRIENDS WHEN THEY COME UNDER ATTACK..YEAH
HEAR THAT TJ!

embrace that! and hope that when some of you get to be his age, you are still even able to ride a bike, yet alone bust some crazy shiot like he continues to do! im 36 now and i know my time on the bike is very limited. i shouldnt even be riding at all. im just one good bail away from not being able to walk. so yea, im stoked to see old farts still busting out! i always thought id be one of them. i hold tight to the old and cling anxiously to see what the new brings daily.

also, i am a firm believer in knowing your bmx roots!
look at any other sport and and most people know the roots of their sport.
know your roots! embrace what others have contributed and done before you. without them, you would not be where you are today. then, of course, move forward and continue embracing the future, occasionally looking back to say thank you for freestyle, thank you for bmx.
just dont get caught up in the narrow mindedness of just living in the past, or just living in the future.
i love that ive been here to see all the changes in the sport. i wish more people were able to witness it for all its worth. i also LOVE where this sport is going and i do not take any of it for granted. what i do HATE is the attitudes of late. maybe some older riders respect the past more because back then there werent all these high and mighty attitudes. it was more of a brotherhood/sisterhood of riders that loved and embraced the riding and each other. today there is too much hate for fellow riders, and many of us who were there back in the 80s/90s n such are turned off by the new attitudes of hate within the sport. i dunno..but maybe its something to think about...and improve on.
good things are on the horizon for bmx, flatland, freestyle, whatever you want to call it(its all the same), but bad attitudes are gonna tear this sport down that so many have worked so hard to build up. it honestly brings a tear to my eye...these attitudes.

You new school idiots dont know shioot about the riders who set the trends and
continue to set the trends........THAT INCLUDES YOU TJ AS YOUR NEW SCHOOL
SMART ASS IS AS IGNORANT AS IT GETS!

Is there anywhere that is easily accessible to learn about the history instead being told us "new school" guys know nothing about old school stuff?

Theory, the history is very vast now.
are you looking for chase history or general flat history?

I would love to know more about the history of flatland in general and pick away at it from there if anything catches my interest.

23mag.com is a good place to start.  The Dorkin' in York boxset (DVD's) will also get you started.  Good place to catch the Plywood Hoods and Chase in action.

I love how this is turning into a discussion about respecting the old school when that was never my point. It's the flagrant disrespect of ANYTHING new school that got me talking. Maybe some of you should try reading the thread to see that.

I have to agree. I see people on here and I don't understand why this school is better then that school, and that's final.

It's like cars, on one end you're ALWAYS going to have some people who think old school muscle is the end all be all. On the other end, you will ALWAYS have people thinking new tuners are the end all be all. After that, you will have people like myself who just appreciate cars for what they are without hating on one type, new or old. Cars evolved from what they once were to what they are today. I can appreciate where they came from, but I certainly enjoy what we have now more then what they had then....

So PLEASE, stop trying to impose your likes to the others, let's let everybody be themselves, otherwise we'll be running in circles for ever.

I had just assumed that by "kids these days" you had a few of them in mind and that you might offer up their identities in order to shower them with your benevolent wisdom.

Quote

Surely someone on these forums is exemplary of doing this correct? I mean, who in your opinion isn't "doing too good" by your standards? I just assume you are under the impression that there are all these younger guys who "don't get it".

As I said before, I just wish all these kids would get rid of their tight pants and spinning steamrollers, put on brakes and do some decades because they're doing this freestyle thing all wrong!

Nothing against new school flatland.

In fact I love how its progressed!

But there is something about seeing a guy you have looked up too for more than 15 years who still kills it.

Chase has always been one of the most inspiring riders for me.

In my mind he rides flatland the way it should be ridden.

I'm sure that's largely due to my age and the years of videos, magazines, jams, sessions and contests I've been to that Chase was too that makes me feel this way.

But WTF! The man can ride a bike and make it look good!

He deserves props! Chase rules!!!!

BUT the riding sucks COMPARED TO old Chase's riding!

I mean that in general AND especially compared to the riding he did when he was brakeless. I can't imagine that Chase would deny that. Nobody has taken his hardest brakeless rollade stuff further yet.

Did he put the brakes back on because he was too far ahead of his time and need to get back to reality???

Good point. You're right on the money there!!!

Chase is completely unequalled in all phases of his riding. I just like the brakeless rollade stuff best because the combos are soul-destroyingly difficult EVEN FOR Chase. It's impressive that he can do all of this stuff like it's a walk in the park - But I just liked it better when it looked like he would fall off any second and had been trying for hour upon hour already. Personal preference I guess...
