Title: Who are the best flatlanders who have totally quit riding?
Post by: Stereolab on January 14, 2010, 09:04:14 PM
Andrew Faris is an obvious one...Who else?

(Note: this thread is not to judge/criticize riders who have quit; riding is everybody's personal choice regardless of how skilled or popular he or she is.  I'm just wondering how many riders have just totally quit and moved on from flatland.)

Has Jason Brown quit? anyone know?

I believe so... I'm sensing a Canadian theme here because I was going to say Dan Rigby, who I think may have stopped due to nagging injuries? All of the Canadian riders were awesome; even Dave Osato and Miron were busting out back then. For now though, at least we still have Cory Festor and (possibly) Cory Strat holding the torch. Royer is probably just deep underground right now.
In the U.S., I'd say some folks who possibly quit who were up there bitd are Andrew Arroyo and Leo Dumlao (who was also a casualty to injuries I think. Mutt would know for sure... =). I miss having Andrew around in the sport... also, Sean Peters. Man, so many folks from the mid-school era that didn't stay in it.
Overseas... I remember seeing clips and pics of a rider named Larry Bull from the U.K. that was doing craaaazzy stuff that was really far ahead of its time.

Almost too many riders have stopped now that I think about it...

Bram Verhallen....

For sure. Although I'm not sure he's totally quit, has he? Who knows. He's an enigma wrapped in a riddle, possibly wrapped in bacon.  ^_^

In terms of old-school guys, I'd say Andrew Faris.

Andrew's been done for 8 years now, he's down to talk about riding and everything still. Just busy with other things and has turned his "diehard" dedication to what he's doing now. Jason Brown has been done for years, but rode a bit last year. Ditto with Sean Peters and Dumlao. Durbano's done now too. That's too be expected though.. people quit and move on, but the hardcore guys stick with it.

Rigby still rides he has knee pain and is busy with being a married working man. Steve Roy still rides, albeit more ramps than flatland, but he still shreds. I don't know about Edgar P.  Cory Strat is DEFINITELY still riding and progressing. Kerry Gatt is riding. Day Smith is riding. Jeff Desroche is riding. Andrew Arroyo is riding. Paul Osicka is riding. Stephan Royer is riding, but has been busy lately. Travis Collier's riding and progressing. Bram still rides. Jesse P is still dope. Dylan Worsley is back riding again and getting it done. Steve Mulder is riding.. just you wait...

Ross Smith is still riding.

Just about all your favourite riders growing up still love riding.

I think with the Internet video era going on, we assume since we aren't seeing web edits from each of these guys then they must either be hiding or have quit... I just don't think that's accurate, some guys just don't film a lot and perhaps they're waiting for an opportunity to show their stuff. Scene is still going strong. I just think with how global flatland has become over the past number of years and the aging of some of the XGames era pro's has made North America look especially bleak.  A lot of these guys aren't showing up to the North American events, but perhaps there isn't a lot that appeals to them in terms of coming.

Maybe we need a better platform for some of these guys to show there tricks, via DVD or the like. If any of these guys came out and dropped a bad ass video part online it's hard to say whether it'd be something anyone mentions by the end of the week.  So, what's their motivation? eeerr.. How do we help motivate?

lol...aint alot of motivation on this thing i tell ya........

there's no real infrastructure in place fro flatland to survive once you are'nt in first place........most ppl don't even think past a parking lot or bike parts.its the curse of a flatlander................but all thise names were the reason to push riding back then...........do we learn from our past i guess not............

As far as the best flatland riders that do not ride any longer, the name that comes to my mind is Richard Z who died in a car accident in 94 (I believe) while returning home from the York Jam when someone fell asleep at the wheel and they crashed, so the story goes.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with this guy, he designed the Graveyard bars, refined our coaster shells and even did cross foot half packers way back in the early 90's.  Then if you had ever seen him spin a time machine, it was like watching someone become animated.

I personally feel as though there should be a documentary solely about this guy and what he has done for our sport and the bikes we ride.

Dion Geaney from New Zealand. Kerry Gatt will know him and possibly Mutt. I got a chance to speak to him a while ago and at one point was considering getting into it again but then he vanished.

I have never seen him ride apart from vids but he's a pretty good rider. I bet he'd be in a similar level to Kerry if he still rode.

Parris Whakarau another NZ rider as well that has just passed away recently who used to ride with Dion and Kerry. RIP.

Yeah...that video is awesome Byke...thanks for posting.

I REALLY liked the clips of Larry Bull.  Seems he was way ahead of the times...like Andrew Farris before Andrew Farris.

Nice.

Oh also, Byke do you know John Yull by chance?  I was riding with him yesterday and we had a bit of a bunnyhop 180 mini-session and he was trying that rollback boomerang that Larry Bull does in that clip.  He made the comment to me, "That's an oldie but goodie".  I thought that was odd, as I had never seen that trick before Steve Mulder did it, but apparently, it is an old trick.

Jesus Christ! No wonder Larry Bull got a degree in computer science! The guy's so f*cking technical! If only he would've kept up! There's no telling where flatland would be right now!

I see Sean Peters cruising around town a lot and riding in some lots from time to time. I don't know if that's what everyone is considering "still riding" but he's always on an Azrael when I see him around.

Mike McPhaden. He used to ride with Desroche years ago. He was ahead of his time as far as the rolling stuff goes.

Marsan up in Quebec. Jesse Cantore in PA.

is he the guy who did cliffhanger kickflip in La Revolution vid from 02 ?

I remember the name John Yull, but not from the UK riding scene but more so the homeless trash video. He was real good. He was a UK rider who emigrated to the us as far as I remember.

I have no idea where he works, sometimes I see him with a fishing pole. Maybe he's a fisherman.

Mutt-
I saw him the other summer. He was riding his old black Azreal, with a backpack and a fishing pole. I was out riding with Trey Leeper, and he rides up to Trey and I and starts talking(hes an old friend of Treys). Talk about crapping my pants. Trey told him to bust out some of the old stuff, and Sean threw down some stuff, but really wasn't prepared. I wish he would get interested again, his spinning style was just awesome to watch.

Larry Bull / Today = http://www.cems.uwe.ac.uk/~lbull/ (http://www.cems.uwe.ac.uk/~lbull/)

This guy used to ride flat? I swear I've heard the name before. Got any vids or links to vids of him riding?

Small bit here at  26:50  .... I only had a quick scan so there should be more on that video

Just those few clips in SOB, those were all I ever had: - we turned up for just about the only UKBFA contest I ever got to, and Larry was there on an old Hutch racebike he had found in the back of the importers warehouse, and Grant Smith filmed a few clips that I stole for SOB ;-)

Meanwhile, here's a magazine interview Larry did looking back on riding.

John does live in Texas. And that wasnt him that tied together sneakers that was John Stapleton from Conneticut. I guess you can add him to the list also.

Yes, Huddleston lives in Austin...been in touch with him a few times on the phone, and he has been wanting to come out to ride.   He's a pretty busy guy though, and hasn't made it out YET.

Rick, sorry about the confusion as to John.  Huddleston was in the first Dorkin'(or maybe it was the second one) riding in his basement...which is how he got the wild spinning style he was known for.

Saw him SHRALP'in at an AFA Masters...he was on fire!  Like a top that never stops.

Doses...that's an impressive list.
