KHE,

Excellent job with both video production and trick tips. Shows great initiative. The sound was easy enough to hear on my computer, no big deal. Just got back into riding myself after 10 years or so, and have been picking up hang-5's, despite rarely trying them bitd. The wall-leaning technique seems like it will be really helpful, I'll have to try it out.

Thanks, and great job

Good Job.

Should be very helpful to some but you forgot to include bailing OVER the bars.
Yeah I try to step down quickly like you showed whenever I can but if you are going kind of fast, sometimes it's too late & you have to kind of push the bars down and hop over them.

True.. very valid point!! Was just more to help prepare for the forward tilt ;) I was always able to apply that bail with good effect but after a serious session i had a monster of a blister on my foot from the constant friction... Very painfull!
I hate seeing myself on cam, i felt kinda dumb when i made it!! Hence i keep looking round all shifty in case i was being watched.. lol

Good man, learning to use your arm's & balance the bike on the spot help's your mind log your balance point... I hav'nt been out much, weather has been sh*t here too... Today was the only day i been able to ride all week.. By the time im home from work it's dark now!! Suck's...

this was SUPER helpful, especially about getting comfortable bailing! that helped a lot!

i learned today that the key is to use your arms to push down on the bars so that the seat gets wedged in your crack. i actually managed to balance about 2-3 seconds before falling today! the hardest part is getting into the balance point, maintaining it is really natural.
Title: Re: How to... Hang 5 video by me!!
Post by: ortho on November 08, 2009, 12:07:52 AM
I was trying to do it stationary in my apartment and darn if I ain't too short to stand straight enough on the peg. So i got out a big gallon of pain can and stood on that with my other leg. haha im sure i looked like an idiot, but I think it's helping a little bit. I at least feel more comfortable in that position now.

I've been working on Hang 5s for like 2 months now! That balance point is just kicking my butt. I usually try it about 30-40 times every session and i'm hoping that it'll freaking "click" any day now. It is definitely the hardest trick i've tried yet.

BTW if you want to do dialogue on a video in the future you might want to try an external mic closer to your face. It sounds a million times better. You prob already knew that but anyway... great video thanks for making it!!!

thanks for posting the video, I really liked the vibe for the last half the video. You gotta make a whiplash how-to next.

some questions: How much did you experiment with seat height? because I've been through nearly all heights. Started off with the highest so I could push the seat up easily, but it made it hard to maintain balance, so I started putting it down slowly. I still can't find that point, but I'm going to keep lowering it. It seems like the lower it is the easier as most of the weight is balanced, rather than being slightly heavier towards the back and is forced in that position by pushing the bars forcing the seat up. I've attached an example of a low-seat hang5 rider, Brian Tunney.

Also, did you experiment with leaning forwards and back? when I had the seat high, I leaned forward a LOT to make up for the lack of weight in the front, as the back end wasn't near the middle because the seat kept it down. But I keep bailing like that, so that's why I've been lowering the seat a lot, to get a even balance on both sides. Ideally I'd like to hang5 like Raddad, he does it with his back up straight.

I also can't try getting into position from standing, just not tall enough!

oki eh when im standing still i can get the back end up but when im moving and retry the motions either nothing happens or if i throw my self forwards the backend lifts up,,,say the height of a juice can than i slam down.....its frustrating

Ok, here's a way to learn how to find the "sweet spot".  I actually built one of these back in 1987 and it helped me learn a bunch of mostly forward as well as backward rolling tricks.  That was 22 years ago!!!!

I put a brake on it and this is what I learned:
-Hang 5
-Squeeker
-Steamroller
-Forward/backward sideglide
-Forward/backward elbowglide
-etc.

Once you learn a few tricks on this, then you'll get the idea and help you "commit".  Try it, you'll be surprised.
Here's some examples:

Ok, here's a way to learn how to find the "sweet spot".

how exactly did you find the sweet spot when there's no frame to counterbalance? it seems like it only teaches you how to balance yourself, but with hang5's you've got to learn to balance yourself and the rest of the bike evenly over the front wheel.
I've tried just about everything so I'm willing to try an unbike, it might help.
Title: Re: How to... Hang 5 video by me!!
Post by: Stubbleduck43 on November 08, 2009, 06:08:32 AM
For me it just came natural.  You don't just quit trying it on a complete bike by any means.  You just use the unbike as a reference of what you need to do.  Get on your complete bike and compensate the trick with the complete bike weight.  It just gives you a better idea of where you need to be on rolling/balancing the trick.  Once you learn that, you'll be able to do stuff on both, the unbike and your bike.  It also learns you on how to bail in various ways.  Try it, what do you have to loose?

oh I see what you mean now, yea it should give you a good idea of how the rolling of a hang5 should feel like. I'll give it a go next time.

here's the best unbike video EVER by shinde, he even rides with the bike and pulls it off, as in literally pull the bike off while riding! ;D

You gotta make a whiplash how-to next.
Ok, soon as i get the chance i will make one... ;)

How much did you experiment with seat height?
When i practised the position against the wall i could feel my seat was too tall cos when i got in the postion i was basically holding up the back end... Same if it was too low the bike would want to tip forward all the time. Im 5' 7" and i can just hold it in the spot. Put something under your foot on the other side. Put your other foot on the peg stand up straight with your knee slightly bent. Shoulders directly over the pegs arms fully forward with slight bend in elbows. This is not easy to explain... I may make a little follow up video to this explaining thing's a little deeper if you think it would help?

Also, did you experiment with leaning forwards and back?
This is another key point i forgot to mention... YOU DON"T LEAN forward or back, you have to try and keep your body locked in the position and use your leg as your balancing tool... I can swing my leg so much now im comfortable in the hang 5 my foot sometimes touch's the rear peg!!lol This is a fundamental part i forgot to explain.. Maybe a follow up video is needed... What you guy's rekon?

Im really pleased this is aiding people and getting you out there trying it... The main thing to remember is to never give up... Im still learning, and have only really learned the basic's but was lucky enough to get this down..  ;D

Hey again. Spent a lot of the day workin further on this trick. Watched the second installment from khe killah. props, brotha. Anyway here are my observations/experiences so far:

1) Press your foot on the front peg (PUSH on it) just before you push the bars down. This is helping me learn to get into the FW steam too.

2) Get enough speed. I know it's scary, but you are not gonna get very far along if you're crawling around. Just do it 50 more times at a decent speed and it won't seem as scary.

3) Doing the wrist snap thing Matt Wilhelm recommends in Ground Rules seems helpful with locking into place. Go from your palms pointing back towards the rear to popping them down on the grip until they are pointing down and pushing the grips down.

4) Lean your head over the bars and front tire further if you're arse-bombing too much.  Remember your head is really heavy!

5) You really are gonna need a hell of a lot of patience...

A small piece of advice that may help out all you hang-5 newbies......remember that you are pushing the bike forward.

Keep your hips over the pegs. By doing this you keep your weight down the center of the whole steer tube assembly, once your hips are over the center simply push the handlebars away from you. You can use this principle to pull a hang-5 from any speed because your hips are the center of your own mass and doing so keeps the body from flailing around excessively.

As long as you keep the hips over center you can actually lean your upper body forward or back a little bit & even bend at the knees.....just keep the hips over the pegs (center of steering).

Hope that helps out too.

just a small bit of advice that really helped me on this from my friend danny.

"ride the front wheel and not the bike" in a hang 5.  helps me understand the balancing more. seems i focused so much on resting my arse on the seat before, but now i concentrate more on actually rolling on the front wheel.

hope this helps.

honestly for me, i learned to get to the balance point by going slower, requiring less force to push on your bars. then gradually pick up speed

this is my progress so far.
im not leaning forward enough so my balance foot is fighting forward to counter act it... as you can see

Yes b_ron... Looking good my man!! Feel's good don't it ^_^ Little advice, may help but may not?! Lower that seat just a touch and it should make you tilt the bike just enough to counter the back end. If you have to push the bars a little further to make the seat touch your arse it may make you lean forward a bit more... Just a thought! Awsome tho... Soooooo stoked to see this thread getting everyone on those hang 5's  ;D

Well you got it a bit better than me so i'll defer to your wisdom on the speed thing. Either way will probably work with enough effort i think. With stuff like peg wheelies it was easier to learn them fast and then learn how to do it slower, but those are 2 different tricks so ?¿? i dunno.

A couple of tips.

Dont let that balancing leg come to far forward to soon.Try keeping it back, in the same place  you launch from. I saw in a couple of the vids that the balancing leg comes forward way to quick. Hold it back for a longer hang 5.

Try and bail completey over the bars and off the bike.

Lastly not a tip but advise . Some days are better than others dont get upset if you can and then cant. Just keep doing it.

I've even had dreams about nailing it where it literally felt like I was coasting it! The bails section really helped a lot. Thank you again and nice work. B-ron, try tightening each stem bolt one at a time alternating between twists. Just tighten a little at a time and make sure the steerer tube is free of any and all lube like grease or tri-flo. Tightening down gradually will give a more even bite for the stem to hold onto with.

this massive "learnin Hang 5" project is takin a bit of a toll on my left palm. Calluses are startin to blister and split! Ahh but i'm getting much better everyday. God this trick is takin me forever to learn. The main thing i'm focusing on now is keeping a lot of pressure on the peg foot as you get into position and throughout the trick. For some reason i keep swinging my balance leg too forward for no apparent reason; gotta cut that out. Last thing is I had been puttin my foot on the peg right at the ball of my foot, when it seems to work better with the peg right behind the ball of my foot.

Gonna go spend awhile on it again today. When i get frustrated w/ Hang 5's i go mess w/ funky chix for a bit.

B-ron, try tightening each stem bolt one at a time alternating between twists. Just tighten a little at a time and make sure the steerer tube is free of any and all lube like grease or tri-flo. Tightening down gradually will give a more even bite for the stem to hold onto with.

yea thats what ive been doing.
but now i have a new problem, with my short steerer tube and a quamen stem. whenever i tighten the top bolts, the quamen clamping system will make the stem shaped weird because there is nothing to clamp onto towards the top of the stem (because my stem is too short)

so whenever i tighten the stem, it will warp a little, unless i keep it very loose

so im trying to trade my stem for one with a shorter stack height or my fork with another with a longer steerer tube

I will try to get a short vid up of how I am doing on hang - 5's soon, once it stops snowing/raining.  That's right, it's snowing in texas woot!

The past few months I have really been focusing on improving them and I am finaly able to get a few good clockwise rotations now on a good day.

My my current issue is trying to find a comfortable speed.  If I go too slow they are not as scary & easier to keep going and going.. but not as fun.

And then when I speed em up just a little, once I get into the carve and get a couple good spins going I feel like I am going too fast and CANNOT slow down, which is pretty scary and usualy results in me bailing or just quickly letting the back end down out of fear.  I'm sure the more I do it the more comfortable I will be up there though.... &  Would eventualy would like to be able to get these going backwards too.  I'm pretty much to that point where I could start trying to turbine them and try to keep em going backwards but I am thinking I should wait until I have more success on the backards karl cruiser before even attempting bw hang 5.

Bah I always struggle when I try recording myself.  I am trying to record more sessions now so I get more used to it.

Anyways here's me trying to learn how to keep the hang 5 carving right.  I'm too lazy to edit so fast forward is your friend.

So long as hang 5s remain a hard trick to learn, you will be helping people :p

Ok so couple things,
this is a street frame - im too cheap to buy another bike for only flatland
the setpost is about as high as it goes lol
and i convientantly snapped the chain lastnight, so thats why the pedals are going all over the show.

there is a heap of bad bad ones in there, and a couple of ok (for me) ones. sorry its so long, but i figured the more mistakes i'm making - easier for you to see whats going on. and no sound is better than wind lol

Thanks in advance

youre about the same level as vic and I with hang 5s haha, except i jump over my bars instead of riding out :D:D
you fall backwards more than forwards maybe lean forward?

i tried to force myself to jump over the bars but i could never get used to it... i got hit in the back of the leg with the pedal and its making it a fun time to walk haha maybe i should jump over the bars again, wouldnt have got me if i could jump lol

i get the feeling the seat doesnt make into my ass a whole lot.. my longer ones - the seat seems to float 10cm below my butt. - that bad?

any tips for getting used to using the leg for balance? mine is pretty lazy... ( i use the other leg for steamrollers, but cant hang 5 with that foot for balance)

Hey Sirius0005, looking good bro! Your on the right path, so keep it up... My advice is try going just a little slower, and when you "pop" it up try also doing it a bit slower! It all happens so quick that your not having alot of time to counter-act the balance point. I will add a new video in the next couple of days of how my hang 5's are going, i got em locked and even do a few tight circles! But im impressed mate so stay focused and add another vid as you progress.. Peace

Nah, not really... I think when it comes to the swinging leg don't think about it too much it will kinda do it automatically....

i find when i get the seat up properly it just feels 'comfortable' as weird as that sounds lol, and the leg does its thing like you said :)
They getting better alreay, had a good wee session on them just before.
Although when i get a wee roll on the wheel starts to lean or turn on me. then it starts rubbing on my leg and the frame goes too far out to the side (with me sitting on it) - any tips / ideas?

I CAN FEEEEL IT. Getting very close and getting a real taste of the proper balance point. Still haven't managed to leap over the bars when I pitch one forward. Maybe I'm too pussé but it just hasn't felt right yet. Consequently I've been eating a lot of crap in the ensuing tangle. I've been fingering this trick for like 5 months now! MUST GET IT. Your foot is sitting really oddly on the peg. It's almost as if you're standing on the arch of your foot rather than the ball closer to your toes. That's something I might change in order to have more control over the front of the bike because doing hang 5s like you are there feels very bad to me.

This is a good point...I learned hang-fives way BITD on the arch of my foot...and I have a hard time controlling my hang-fives.  I look at modern riders who have them dialed, and most of them are on the ball of their foot.

Also, I learned rolling stuff mostly with a stiff straight leg, and that's something I need to work on.  Everyone tells me to bend my knees.  It makes it really hard for me to learn double footed balance.  Should have learned correct "technique" the first time!

This is something I constantly have to teach to newer riders because for them the stiffness helps to maintain the point, but they don't have total control over it. It gives away the long term for the short term perk of learning a new trick, when in actuality they haven't learned to master it at all. It makes learning things down the road incredibly difficult for people who learned their tricks this way and it's something I tend to push hard against. It's difficult because the arch of ones foot is kind of a natural balance point, but in flatland it leads to considerable difficulty transitioning from one thing to another later on.

This also goes for how people land in certain switches. When I started learning big jumps and transitions from one trick to another and couldn't spot or feel my landing as well, landing on the arch of my foot was something I was always very careful to try not to do. Now when I land a big jump say from mccircle to wheelchair or crackpacker, I've gotten to the point where landing on the arch is essentially a "touch" because the control over the trick I land in will be sacrificed for want of simply getting into the trick.

But I'm also crazy anal over details like that so I could be out of my mind. :)

No, no...What you're saying is basically the same thing Adam DiClaudio has told me.  I asked him about where to place my foot, and his reply was, "Well, what do you want to do out of it?"   He thinks about what he does, much like you.  I wouldn't call it "anal".

I also have a hard time turning rolling tricks, and I think this is because of my stiff leg.  Need to learn to relax, and guide the bike.  I've also been practicing keepin' my damn fingers of the brakes.  I learned hang-nothings, no footed can-can and candybar hang nothings BITD using my brakes!  It's more like a "stoppie" than a nose wheelie or hang nothing.  Just need to show some restraint, like you have told me before.

Anywho, sorry off topic.  Well, not really...but didn't mean to make this thread about me.  Need to re-learn and MASTER these tricks.

flatland is like golf in a lot of ways: each trick is like a different swing with tons of little techniques involved, and if you learn the wrong techniques, it's REALLY hard to unlearn them.

idk if someone already said this (it might have been in the video) but with my experience with learning hang 5s (before i bent my seatpost and decided to take a break to avoid breaking it completely lol) i found that instead of trying to "pop" the back end up, i tried to slide it into the balance point. this way i overshot it and undershot it less, because i pushed the bike into position gradually. even when you FEEL like you're doing it slower, it's still happening fast, just concentrate on not throwing the frame into the balance point but pressing into it slowly.

that's a really good point. I'm still trying to learn these and I'm used to keeping my leg straight and stiff, but that means I just about always go over the bars when I get a decent roll going. When your knees a bent you've got lots of wiggle room for your upper body. If you keep your legs straight, your legs can't move and the wiggle goes up to your upper body, but your body can't move very much as it's relying on the legs, so that's why people always go over the bars.
Legs should do all the balancing work, compensation etc. Upper body is should only stay in position.

I've always known this but I've been learning hang5s with a straight leg most of the time. When I do get rolling my legs and body are pretty much locked in 1 position. When I bend my knees I can move around more, but it also feels a bid dodgier.

But I'll start listening to my own advice now and force myself to learn with bent knees and see how that goes.
