Title: Martti asks a question.
Post by: Martti on July 05, 2009, 01:46:12 PM
Just been wondering why there is only less than 3 people doing kickflip style in the world? I am dissapointed that kickflip style never broke through.

KGB gives a free frame to the first guy who comes up with a video here with 3 different kicflips in the same combo.
Or,
first guy who comes up with an original style kickflip.

And, big surprise give away for the one who comes up with a 3 different combos and each combo contains:
1 kickflip
2 original switches (unseen)
Personality in all combos is a must.

Also a special price for the one who shows in the video at least a good try. And if someone blows our minds with a completely new style, letīs talk more what we do about it. Ok guys, I want to see you show your skills. Thanks!

Ever since I learned the bw halfhiker I've been trying to learn to kick flip it. I can actually role  cross fott bw hitchs for a small amount of time until the skin on the inside of my legs burns off. LOL ^_^. I guess i need to get  a long seat post again and start trying it. This a great promotion for KGB.

I think this is one of the coolest things to come from a flatland company yet!  Not only helping promote their product but also promoting progression in flatland by dropping a challenge like this!!

Also, a side note to some of you who are trying to learn hiker kick flips and such... no one said that it needed to be a kick flip from a hitch hiker.  There are other tricks to kick flip in and I'd love to see those.  Kick Flip hikers have been done.  Let's see something new.  Kick Flip cliffhanger variations??? Kicks out of elephant glides or half packers...  If I could do any of these tricks I'd try this.  Looks like I will have to think outside of the box and apply a kick flip to my current trick repatoire.

Props to viki and martti for doing this and throwing something out to get riders to progress and push the sport and also support and promote rider owed companies!
This is what we need.
Time to practice, I tried a few a few years back, I always loved kickflip style tricks and was part of something I wanted to learn.
RIDE hard =]

Wow! Thanks for all the positive feedback! And for me to keep flatland alive we need to keep it progressing.
And remember my words in the beginning of this topic. We are also looking for new styles and new switches in this topic. It donīt neccesarily has to be kickflip, any progression weīll see here looks good and we make the decission after we see some new stuff.
Keep it going!

Kickflip style seems kind of like what happened with Zach Shaw and the 360 backflip... it was so far ahead of its time that it took years for anyone else to get to.... that, and Martti and Justin Miller pretty much shut it down for everyone with all the bomb variations they've thrown down over the years  ;D  It'll be cool to see what folks come up with!

SERGI8,
we are interested to see the cliffhanger kickflip. Unfortunately I havenīt seen it done before. Iīve heard that Cory from Vancouver did it long time ago but havenīt seen it so far.
Please post a video of it. Also Iīd like to see the elephant glide kickflip!

And thanks all of you who are taking this challenge!! You keep flatland alive! Letīs push it to next level! P.s. I am taking a part on the "new style" competition as well. I have some good ideas which will take some time to produce once I have something to show I will post it up here.

Just a quick tips:

1. Be patient with kickflips (do not get dissapointed if you donīt learn it in one or two weeks, just keep trying and eventually youīll pull one and you will be a happy guy)

2. Be careful (easy to crash, so at your own risk)

3. Practice and practice more

4. It is a whole another story to get them dialed after you learn it. But it is possible as well. Keep trying!

5. Once you learn the teqnigues of kickflips you learn a lot of how your bike works in other tricks as well. You will get a lot more control on your riding.

6. I go ride now to come up with a new style on this video competition!!!

Martti,

I have footage of Cory Strat doing Cliffhanger 180 Kick Flips, 2 in a row. I used them in the "Mixt" bonus section. Eugene Collins does them in Crack Packers also in "Mixt"

I like your idea to push progression and motivate others, ride on.

What do you win if you complete the challenge? ha ha.

Are Death Truck Kick Flips possible? What about Bar Ride Kick Flips?

Chad,
thanks for reminding me... Long time since I checked mixt so I have a blackout! My bad. I really like the one Eugene is doing in a crackpacker, I felt bad that I didnīt thought of it first  ^_^

What I am going to win is myself. If I can come up with a new style after all the struggles I had I will consider myself very satisfied. I am hungry again which makes my brain work on a creative mode again. If I can come up with the style I have in mind a lot of people will laugh their assess off and be confused if it is cool or not, hahahah.

Iīve always dreamed of doing barride kickflips and I KNOW it would be possilbe. I just cannot do a proper barride. Anyone? Chad?

I think we can change flatland into a good way again. We all just got to push each other to come up with grazy styles like in the old days!!!

Donīt get me wrong here. There are grazy guys at the moment like Chad (extremenly different style), Adam, Mathias, Raphael, Viki, Alex, Terry, Melo brothers plus many more to mention and the undergrounders out there. (sorry leaving some names out but I got to get going). But more can be done in my opinion by more people.
Keep pushing!!!

Peter,
Iīve been watching your video few times now and the style you have on that hiker kickflip is so smooth and consistent that I really belive you can do few in a row with very short roll in between... I spoke to Aapo today about it and it would look so nice if you do them really quick after each flip!!!

Flip, roll 1 second, flip, roll 1 second, flip, roll 1 second and so on. Wowo. Thatīs new stuff right there. Keep pushing.

Many thanks for the kind words Martti. To be honest, i dont know if i could do 10 in a row. 5 or 6 yeah, but i dont know about 10. I think i would drive myself insane. Plus the wheel im on now is 28spoke. I doubt if it would hold up to it  -_-

Fak kickflips they are too hard to get many people to participate, at least it appears so.. hopefully I am wrong :)

I want to see some more inventive wheel switching and bike varials!
edit:  or even better yet, combine the 2!  Like in mid mcircle, whip the frame around like your going to land on back wheel but at the same time flip it upside down land in upside down megaspin or something.  :o

A kickflip is an awesome, amazing trick.  But it has to be done so quickly and perfectly that if the g pub blinks they won't even catch it.

Martti/Viki, when you are trying to come up with a new or original trick, do you find yourself stumbling into these types of tricks, or is it a more methodical process where you have a deliberate goal? I've always found original tricks just kind of "happening" instead of thinking about them beforehand, but I'm curious as to the way in which you approach this.

Well, I could talk about this subject till tomorrow morning so letīs try to make it short then.
Iīve been going through in creativity many aspects from having dreams of tricks while I sleep to forcing myself to create new tricks till I canīt sleep because of the stress and everything between.

So I would say that let the tricks come to you and sometimes try to think of new things. And just get into the flow of thoughts of new tricks. Most of them will feel impossible to reach but it is then only up to you what do you want from riding. If you think of a new trick and you feel like you could do it then go ahead and try it. Try it for couple of hours and analyze the situation again. Then next day again and so on. Try not to give up, once you feel like it is impossible to do after few days trying it then give it a break. Let your body work while it rests and youīll be amazed how these couple days off make your body work differently and more accurate. Even you rest your muscles are working on coordinations.
So sometimes you just got to force yourself to learn the tricks no matter how hard they feel like.

Progressive riding is not all about just having fun and letting the tricks come and go to your head. You got to make yourself think further sometimes if you want to progress. But, progression and originality is not for everyone. But I would be happy to help the ones who has this progressive way of thinking on their ridings. That is my whole point here.

Just to answer shortly on the actual question. Sometimes they come and go to my mind as well, but every time when a new trick comes, I will give it a hard try.
But I like the feeling more when a lot of grazy ideas are flying in my mind.

On the subject of how original tricks come about, I believe its a little bit of everything. Creativity, The determination to make that creativity happen, accidents or luck when they do just happen or even taking a piece of someones idea and running with it. Like when Dylan Worsley took every trick to the pedal and became like the master at it. He had seen some Peregrine rider back in like 87' or 88' doing a Rope-A-Roni on the pedal. He took that idea and ran with it.
Dont ever, especially in this day and age, think an idea of yours is too far-fetched or impossible. Back in the mid-nineties, several pro flatlanders were asked where they thought flatland was going trick wise. Most of them didnt really give a serious answer, but Chad Degroot, I believe jokingly, as its hard to tell when he was serious and I didnt see him working on this, said he would like to start seeing more kick-flip style tricks like in skateboarding where you are flipping the bars with your feet instead of your hands and such. Like I said, I dont know if he was joking or not, and I dont know if Martti saw that interview, but Chad never brought them to life. Martti , on the other hand, made what others thought was a joke, a total reality. Now look at the topic we're on. Not wether or not they are possible, but how to make even more variations of it. More and more lately, Ive come to the realization that NOTHING is impossible on a bike. (See: Flatland Bikeflip) If you think it up, stick to it as long as it takes to make it reality. You never know, You may be the one to unveil the next "New Style" of flatland trick.
Ride hard everyone, and Martti, you always have and always will be, The Man.

BTW, TJ, just stick to whatever you are doing for original tricks because it seems to be working for you. I came across another video of yours today, "Solo Session Part I" I believe, and once again I saw some really awesome tricks that I havent seen before. I already mentioned that one to you before, (Which I think would still be great now, You said it was old footage) but there were several original links I saw you do. Honorable mention, the crackpacker around the bars to spinning hitch hiker was awesome.
Im by no means claiming to be any kind of authority on whats original, but since Ive been hurt, Ive had time to watch alot of web videos and still feel you have some very original and difficult links.
I just thought I would throw this out there. People get so caught up in your arguments with everyone else, that I think they may have forgotten what a badass rider you are.

Thank you for the kind words Back4Good, and thank you Martti for the insight into your thought process behind original tricks.

I'd be VERY curious to talk about some more specific tricks that you learned over the years that really seemed to break a lot of ground towards newer trends and what not, or even do a fully fledged interview. There is a lot I think a lot of people would enjoy hearing about including myself.  -_-

I'm not super original, but when the opportunity presents itself, I try to do my own thing. I'd rather have an over all style of riding that most people can't just up and copy (half regular and half opposite seems to have done the trick so far).

Martti

CJ

Its funny this thread comes up...and its funny you mention death truck kickflips...Today while falling over and over out of 2 footed Dtrucks.. ON my way falling forward out my left leg clipped the left pedal that was forward..And while jumping off my rite foot and reaching forward with my left, my jeans and the movement hooked the pedal and i landed sideways next the bike in a stick b position...I know it was a complete accident, but it had me wondering.

Also are backwheel "kickflips" allowed? I only have one i wanted to unleash at voodoo, but it would be an honor to pass it on to VIKI as the link is a "barrow" of his.

This is not the first time that KGB supports riders. I have two friends from Panama that were given a frame and some bike parts. My friends are really humble people, but their riding level is very high. I would really like to thank you guys on behalf of the Latin American community. You rock!

Yes, it is an inspirational thread- but come on, 3 riders?  There were probably more than 3 before you did your first one.  Trevor did x-foot hiker to backpacker in 95...Dylan did hiker k'flips pre 1997...Andrew did s.f steam k'flip to halfpacker in 97.
They are a hard trik on both the body and the bike.  I have destroyed a couple front rims learning dic-flips only to never have it dialed.
Hiker flips only took me 9 years to learn and when I was done my leg was sticking out a good inch or two from all the missed attempts during that 2 hour period.
Now I have brand new 360 kickflip/180 bike flip that I am real close to- but while at the Berry Jam I missed the pegs, sat on my bar and bent it down at least 2".
These feather light bikes we ride cannot take how many tries it takes to learn these k'flips.  I know my bike right now is wrecked from them; hint, hint...(I won't send you a video of my ridiing but I could keep that footy of you in Toronto/'98 off youtube in exchange for a frame; ha ha.)
Title: Re: Martti asks a question.
Post by: ASC on July 07, 2009, 06:28:49 AM

You have a good understanding of your process, thank you for sharing & giving, sometimes riders need to hear from their "Flatland Gurus/Pros" a little more often in an open format way and setting...N

That pegless rider is very smooth. I like the transitions and trix he is doing.

Here is an idea for a new trick....I am working on learning myself but am prolly a year or so from getting close to trying (not landing, just even trying).... Cliffhanger with 360 bike varial to forward hitch.

I'm a mid-level rider and I'm close to learning forward hitch as well as cliffhanger so performing this trick is long time coming in my opinion, I'll never give up the fight tho.

Cory,
please donīt take my words too literally. Point is and was to motivate people, not to take credit for anything. I think I took my credit already from riding I am not asking for more, I just want to see new guys coming up with new stuff.

If you are talking about that trevors trick on Jinx video 95 that in my opinion was not a kickflip, Justin is doing the same trick now with a kickflip. Trevor did it and does it without flipping the handlebars.

we are interested to see the cliffhanger kickflip.

Martti

Sweet one Snoop, keep it up and you will pull it!
If they're no-handed and flip with your feet I think it's a kick flip, maybe pressure flip if one foot stays on a peg...
Ride on homey.

This video is awesome, very inspiring to me. I'm stoked that we can do completely different tricks with the same concept. This is an untapped avenue, there are many more pegless tricks and combos to be done!

This is also awesome!

During one of my trips to Amsterdam I remember watching Bram VerHallen kick flip Half-Packers in the middle of each turbine, the Dutch are dope!

Nothing too fancy, and like Effraim said, more of a 'pressure flip' then a kickflip...But here she is

Sweet.

Let's see some originality from everyone!

Big props to Martti for this thread.

I consider myself blessed/fortunate to witness Martti push himself and our sport/art firsthand. He would get off the airplane, put his bike together and begin to ride. Almost every time he'd pull his first trick and then tell me he was ready to film. He always had new, original, progressive tricks. Some times they took days to capture on camera but he would never give up. Once he had it in his head that it was possible he wouldn't stop thinking about it, even if his body was too tired. He would rest (body, not mind) and get back to business. I absorbed his determination and self-discipline and applied it to my own dreams.

Much respect for all the riders that created something different (too many for me to list).

Stay positive.

Whoīs going to do first following trick: Cliffhanger to jump over the rear tire to Hitch hiker??? I donīt have balls to try it anymore  ^_^

p.p.s. you could do it all spinning as well....
post a video please!!!!!

That kickflip is just the tip of the iceberg for me...What is supposed to happen immediately after the kickflip is what's causing me a lot of problems...Hopefully I can get it soon though.

Which specific kickflip are you trying to do? Let me know and perhaps I can help out.  There is always an explanation for a mistake and misunderstandings.
M

I'm trying to do that kickflip, then pivoting underneath the bike on the front peg (if that makes sense?), some days I feel super close, other days it feels like such a lost cause.

Wow, Martti's post really brought out the big guns.

Great riding from EVERYONE.

I didn't think Alex's thing was a kickflip...I thought it was more of like an around the world type thing...but it was definitely cool and what do I know.

What would the definition of a kick flip be anyways? Does it have to be where the wheel lifts off the ground? Or is it just the flip or switch of the wheel without use of hands?  Because in that case both alex and dez did kick "flips". I agree with the second definition...
Title: Re: Martti asks a question.
Post by: Bomber Moran on July 09, 2009, 05:33:04 AM
IMO kickflips are rotations made using your feet and should be done while the kicked tire is in mid air..the feet is also not touching the peg/whatever during the rotation..

hope that makes sense.LOL

I saw Alex go around the wheel, not vice versa.  Let me know if I missed something.  I feel stupid questioning this cause his link is dope, but I'm just trying to make sure I understand what a kickflip is.

First off, i would really like to congratulate Mrs. Kuoppa n' Gomes for the opportunity to us to show our humble skills gathered over long hard yrs of practicin'

I was the one who edit the Leo Claro pegless footage. Leo (short for Leonardo) is an amazing brazilian rider who has joint our sport since 1986. He's 36 age now, seeme like a kid in vid. For the past 20 yrs, since I begin to ride flat', i have been seing all sorta tricks from him, from the old school braked ones to the nowadays trends like pumpings, scuffless n' stuff. He is able to ride bothsides, but actually he is more like counter clockwise spinning style o'riding direction.

Anyways, Mr. Kuoppa, if one o'my fellas deserves some prices, you could sure talk to me, i got'em addresses.

peace,

=c=

ps. Me and Leo have seen together the kgb Impulsivity DVD. Well, what we got to say is: Kuoppa has the hardest tricks weve never seen bfore. Gomes has got a brilliant style and criative links ever. The whiplashes x-foot is outta this world! You DEFINITIVELY have written yo names into the book of flatland history for sure, together Kevin and Chase!

In my personal opinion on the trick, I'm in steamboat position, and I still consider this to be behind the bars body position.  I allow the pressure my foot puts on the peg to flip the wheel when its about to turbine.  I would consider mysel dong more of a kikflip then an "around the world" type thing.

There are unlimited new tricks with the use of the rollercoaster. Im trying to figure out how to make one out of the Geisha and not the Taska. The taska is just to damn heavy.

That no footed Tailwhip was sick. So many possibilities with that stuff. Ross Smith would get a kick out of that video. The style was very clean.

Thanx martti, it does work.. i guess i got comfortable with my riding and did not ask expect to much of myself aslong it felt fine just riding, so i charged and went for it!! proof right here!!!

And just get into the flow of thoughts of new tricks. i am trying a new switch, i will take a while tho, as pretty much everytime i miss it im getting close to the pavement with my head  ^_^

Thank you Navid! I trust that it was your first trick of your session and that is a big proof right there for yourself that you can do hard trick for yourself right in the beginning of your riding session... Everyone should get inspired for such different idea for a video clip. Good job.

Perhaps I'm biased being an old guy but sometimes I feel the newer riders forget to look backwards sometimes. I can see some interesting flips into some not so often seen or less obvious positions. Like hitchhiker flip to karlcruiser. The kruiser itself isn't hard but to land in it is another story. I'd like to see a flip where there is no contact with the bike throughout the maneuver(has this been done yet?). Say hitchhiker flip to steamroller. Think about that one. The beauty of it is you're landing in a simple trick the hard part is co-ordinating the flip and backend to make it possible. Again, I don't know if it's been done but I see it as possible. Hope that helps someone.

Seppl has always been one of the most underrated pros out there! Iīve always been spying on his riding at the comps and he is doing very sensitive stuff in terms of keeping up the balance.
Learn something from his video please and keep this thread going on, as Seppl said, for flatlands sake. Any other pro riders why donīt you post new videos here?

Not a kickflip, but I don't think I've seen anyone hit this switch, I've been working on it for a little bit here and there but it's proving to be pretty hard, here's a good attempt

Consistency is only the way to win the comps. Consistency over difficulty that is new school.
However, I watched your clip but there is some problem with the file because it didnīt play it smooth? It was difficult to follow up the link.

Hi.
Good to hear that some one is trying to learn hang10 to kickflip to halfpacker. With this trick you need to be careful and patient. The most important thing is the point where you decide to jump / kick.
The right point to jump is somwhere little less than 90 degrees from where you started to roll the hang 5. Just a tiny bit before 90 degrees.
And try to do it with little more speed than you are used to. You might crash but it is worth it. It flips faster.
Once we get our website open I will explain better.
Keep in mind. That specific kickflip is very difficult. It drove me grazy literally. HAH.

thanks martti

my butt always hit the end of the bars.
its drive me crazy my temper always hit me up
i will cut the the bars if my temper will not control hehehe.

i try hang 5 straight, before i kick i do i little turn degree then kick.

my speed is normal not fast as you are.
i can kick out in a normal position
but my probs is fear to jump back on pegs.

whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?..
hehe

Please check from my video sections on the method I use. First I land on my left foot on the peg and the right foot kicks up in the air and lands on the peg (tiny bit later from my left foot)

If you have problems that your butt hits the bars then jump a little higher.

Will you be the first person after me pulling that trick? I havenīt seen anyone do it so far.

whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?..
