Title: Online video battle main thread - RULES & questions/suggestions here.
Post by: ondo on June 18, 2009, 06:16:27 PM
The rules:

* To participate in a online battle round, you must be signed up.
* To do that, you must send in a qualification video in the sign up active period.
* The qualification video must not be longer than 50 seconds. (check other video rules)
* The qualification video will be used to evaluate your skill level and be signed up for the right group.
* The video will be used in the first battle. Rider can't change the content of it anymore.
* Video link has to be sent to online battle organizer ondo via personal message
* Ondo has the rights not to allow a rider to sign up, if he's going for a class which is too low for his skill level based on qualification video and/or other his videos online.
* Ondo has the right to disqualify a rider if there are any thoughts of entering a weaker class on purpose.
* Disobeying these rules and/or making false weak qualification video will result in disqualification.
* Sign up is active till all the free spots in each group are taken. Minimum 8, maximum 32, average 16. Ondo can choose the number of spots in each group and change it in progress of sign up.

Videos

* Your online battle videos have to show only your run for the competition, performed by yourself.
* Videos should be in a quality, so the run is totally clear for the viewers.
* No slow motion, looping and other effects are allowed. Zooming in to make the view clear is allowed.
* Editing, changing views, in a middle of a trick is not allowed.
* Videos can be edited, they don't have to be one shot filmed.
* Tricks should be in frame from start to end. Any trick out of the frame doesn't count.
* Battle runs have to be filmed in the period from sign up start till round finish. Material filmed before the existing round isn't allowed.
* Run length shouldn't be longer than the limit in each -final.
* If the video has a title, then it can be longer as the title length.
* The video should be uploaded in easy viewable media sites and the video settings have to be set to public view.
* After the battle, the videos should be left online for viewing purposes.
* It is advisable to send the video in before the battle, to make things faster. In this case, the video can be private, but on call should be made public.
* If video contains mistakes, it is possible to re-post it, if the battle period is still active.
* If the rider don't want to or can't re-post it, if ondo allows the fact, video can be used in battle, but judges take the violations in consideration.
* The run can be few seconds longer, if the longest combo is on beginning and there are no short tricks, that could be deleted.
* Each battle video must be different. Only beginners can repeat their single tricks and combos. Adding a variation or a link to a combo, counts as a new combo. Run variation is the main goal.
* Ondo has the right to allow the use of extra seconds or other reasons and not to accept it in case of breaking rules.
* Quarter-, semi- and final rounds add more time limit to the run length, it depends on class. These limits are posted in the given class topic.

Battles

* Ondo announces a battle between 2 or 3 riders. From that moment riders have a amount of time - 4 days (if not announced different) to send his run to ondo.
* Exact time is visible on the announcement post, so it's clear how much time is left. (ondo is on GMT +2 time zone)
* Extra time or other period variations are possible only with the permission by ondo.
* When ondo has both videos, they are posted on the first and last post of the particular class thread & poll and judge voting is opened.
* Poll votes are just for viewers and don't take any part in the battle result.
* Winner of each battle is determined by judge votes.
* If a rider doesn't post his video or is disqualified, the other rider still has to post his run and take a uncontested win. If it's in a situation of a top 3 battle, then the inactive rider recieves 3rd place.
* If a rider takes an uncontested win, he can repeat the same combos as in the uncontested battle won. Only with ondo's permission the rider can use the same material from the uncontested battle.
* Ondo has the rights to follow on with the next battle if some of the judges are late and the result by votes is already clear.
* When the winner is announced, next battle period begins.
* If a Round is sponsored TOP 3 places of each class recieve prizes.

Judges

* Judges have to give their vote as soon as battle videos are posted.
* The vote should be posted on the particular class thread.
* Puting the vote bold and adding explanantion would be even better.
* Judges have to give their explanantions if asked.
* Judges have to take in consideration video rule violations and repeating tricks or combos.
* If a battle is between 3 riders, judges have to post their TOP 3.
* Judges must base their votes not just on the riders run in the current battle, but taking previous runs into consideration, since variety and progression is the main key of the contest.
* If a judge can't do his job on a time period, he should contact ondo in advance.
* Judge personal can change.
* Judges recieve a reserved spot in the class they enter and can send the qualification video only when their first battle starts.

Good luck!

Best trick section? 30 seconds of any trick or link the rider makes up or thinks to be original or something that hasnt been touched on in a while by flatland etc.No class system just who ever enters.

what about team battles?

or crews?

two minutes?

and the bracket thing I was talking about. if you know you have signed up at the beginning you know its basically four brackets down to two then the final.

EX:

i know its not possible if people dont register early, but just thinking it'd be visually nice to place in the orignal post as a running update.

Team battles- no. And two minutes are too much. The semi finals and finals could be longer.

About the bracket- this time I'll check that there are a even count of riders, so the bracket works. But maybe I could just type it like this, don't want the pictures:

xxxx----
            I---- xxxxx
bbbb----

:D Oh damn that's funny.

Hmm, I'll check your vid again, not so sure, you rode pretty well.
If I remember you were battling ronny I think. No wonder :D

The thread should be locked during battles during voting. Both videos should be submitted at the same time.

And you shouldn't share your opinion on peoples riding ondo.

Good one about locking.
But it is not possible to submit them at the same time, of course it would be fair.
Maybe it could work like this:
The rider A says that his video is ready and waits for the rider B. As they both are ready they post the runs, but I think not everybody can be by the pc or internet by any time of the day.

The solution is simple...When riders upload videos they send the links to you....and then you post them at the same time...that should work -_-

Well this is my fav post in here and the Beginner Learning one by TJ, before all this, one of my fav post was about parts when "Furball" had his "lets spill onto info take". Furball you made parts interesting, for someone who does not Flatland, I learned some.

Anyway whomever wins we'll toss something in, but this should not be about prizes, more about the "Art of War"/Battles concept only to prove to oneself...I also love the fact that we all can be judges...this is super great concept ONDO!!!

Best wishes...Neela

How about a more Direct Method.. Instead of waiting for people to sign up. Send out personal Inviations and set up a Cap for Sign ups...Its a marketing thing. If its wide open then people are way to lax in general. If there are limits then people will hurry up to make sure they get there spot. Put a deadline for sign up and a cap on amount of people that can participate...that will definatly help dirve numbers.

Keep on Riding!

There should be at least 8. Because the first are quarterfinals- 4 proceed. Then semifinals- 2 get further- and final.
If more than 8, then 16!

..Put a deadline for sign up and a cap on amount of people that can participate...that will definatly help dirve numbers.

Great idea. Thanks. I'll put a cap for 16 riders each class. But if it isn't reached, then the first 8 riders will get in. Hmm, deadline, for example 3rd July.
I'll be away for a week after 23rd. But I'll sign up everybody when I'll be back.

Today,I was talking to another rider about filming me for Masters class, but I do have just 1 question;

Is it for only" one video per rider" or would there have to be more "follow up videos" after you move up in some sort of standings or rankings?

If it is only one video per rider.  I think I might be able to swing it, but if it has to consist of multiple videos then I may have to pass, because it would be kinda a 1 shot/day deal on getting our schedules  coordinated to do a video run.

Thanks =)

There are multiple videos, but that's not a problem, because you will battle at max 4 or 3 times and with intervals. Or you can have just 1 day for filming?

It would be great to reach 16 riders in each group.

Attention: Competitors,

Please try to invite 1 more rider to your perspective class. I was looking most classes have just about 8 riders right now. If each of us get 1 more rider a peaice to join then we will easily read our goal of 16 riders per group.

There are ateast 3000 memebers here on Global-Flat alone. I am sure we can find 24 more riders to participate.

Promote...Promote....Promote...We got to keep i going...don't let up till we reach or goal by our deadline!!

Keep on Riding!

I trully love being apart of the active community. Here is a Grand Idea if its not already in palce. Make a specail page on Global Flat that will Archive the Winners of each battle. Along with the year and month that they won. If that is started now then it won't be so hard to keep up with latter on. I was thinking Battle Hall of Fame!

Another reason to get people to sign up because there name would become apart of the permenate records for Global-Flat. I really do believe in this Global Online Battle. I think it can become a VERY LARGE event someday. With prizes at the end of the battles.

Okay lets take it another step further and give Points Recieved for each Battle that you particiapte in. Like First place gets 100 Second gets 90 and so forth. At the end of the year we Announce the Gobal Over all Winner. From the last sets of Battles it looks like it took about 2 maybe 3 months, winter will kill some riders so it would have to wrap up before winter comes. I could see handeling at least 3 Online Battles in 1 year maybe 4 as long as there are not too many delays.

For next year if we were to plan it out just like any other event and have dates for each sets Round of Battles along with a Leader Board. I think we can take these battles to Higher Ground!

Keep on Riding!!

I like the winner archive idea. But how it is gonna be? Like a topic where I just post all the winners?
There will be prizes!
The point system would be strange, because it isn't possible to compare riders from different groups as they will get similar points. Maybe it could be by the votes recieved?
But okay I red it few times and understood. :D
Thanks for the ideas!

We have already 9 riders in experts, there should be definately 16 in experts!

Hey Ondo,

I understand what your saying because is really not a 1,2,3,4,5 with out doing a losing bracket...and that just seems to take  way to much time. I guess points from votes could work. But what if we structured it around the Rounds as well..Making pass the first round would give you 100 points. Next Round 200 Points and then you can have a clear 1stplace for 1000 and 2nd Place 900 3rd Place 800 4th Place 700. I think depending on votes alone could become skewed if some one only had 10 votes and won the battle and another person had 20 votes and won the battle it would not be as fair to the person that rode just as well and recived just 10 votes.

I know if we can hammer out some numbers we can make something work that would be fair.

Got to go to work..hahaha

Keep on Riding!

Can I join the beginners?

I watched your old videos again. Oh, I hope you haven't progressed that much, taht you should be in experts, he he. But yes, you're signed up!

And really I'm thinking damn, the experts will be high level. I haven't been riding a lot these days and I won't be.

I honestly think there should be another class. Intermeidate. I know it makes it that much more difficult to run the battles having another class. But at the same time it provides a fair balance for the True Beginners and those that are not ready to compete at the "EXPERT" level. I would not say my riding is at a Beginner level anymore but I am definatly not a expert by today's standard either. I have always pushed for more classes in comps. There are enough people we just need to market the idea to get more people to sign up and particpate.

Addison if your reading this can you make a flyer for this event and submit to Ondo for his Stamp of Approval. We need to keep promoting this on every site. Plaster the Internet with Flyers. Promote promote promote!!

Keep inviting people...some of the people I invited have joined up. If everyone can particiapte in the promotion we can have all classes full in no time. Send a personal message to some of your friends on your friends list.

Keep on Riding!

here is what i think about all this classes : riders should be placed in classes by time of riding not their level of riding. why? let say two riders have identical combos but one who is riding for5 years is a litle but smoother and gets more votes than other who is only riding for about 2 years. but if smn is at the same level in half as much time is obviously a lot better imo.
peace

Why does time make a differance? I have been riding my bike since 19...now 41. Still making progression but not nearly as fast as others. According to time means that anyone with X amount of time should be at X level. That is not always true.

Okay just for gigggles if there was a Intermediate class who would sign up?

Ondo;

I would only have a few hours to throw something together.
I might be able to get in touch with a few other riders in the Cleveland area , and maybe go from there.

I will confirm my placement(or not) in the next day or so.

Thanks ever so much for the info.

Take Care

not that it should be at X level, but if smn is capable or dedicated so much, that can learn the same trik or combo or whatever in X ammount of time and the other in X x 2 amount of time, 1st one is clearly better rider. like i sad
if smn is at the same level in half as much time is obviously a lot better imo.
+ its not fair if

so i stilll think time makes a big dieference

I think intermidiate class should be given a try, as for amount of years im not sure it will work because different riders count there riding time differently, and some people ride for fun and others ride and train more, so basicly years spent riding would just make a bigger mess in my opinion..

ye but these videos don't decide who is a better rider, its more about who is a better rider in the videos, just like a contest, and to top that in contests you see 20 year old rider competing against 27 year old rider and nobody says a thing

Title: Online video battles - Registration
Post by: Mr News Bot on June 25, 2009, 12:03:31 AM
Regular forum visitors probably already noticed the online video battles that were going on in the forum lately. Our forum member Ondo came up with the idea and does an amazing job organizing the battles. Basically everyone can take part by signing up for one of the three classes (beginner, expert, master). The only thing you need is an account in our forum and a video cam+YouTube. The first round is over now and the winners have been announced (beginner, expert, master).

The next round will follow very soon so sign up now! The maximum number of riders per class is 16.

Ondo, throw me down for beginner class i guess....if theres still room.
i know ill get my azz handed to me in expert these days, and i really havent been riding much the past 2 months..mostly just at jams n stuff.

this should inspire me to get crackin again...not slackin.

i still believe another class is needed in these battles tho.
the beginner class is a mix of true beginners, intermediates/advanced beginners, and people like me who just dont apply enough effort to their riding, or just dont ride much cuz of other reasons.

i think there should be a beginner class consisting of just "beginners", and an intermediate class where people who might be a bit further ahead can compete. u know, just make it fair to everyone entering so everyone can have the same chances of moving to the next round.

whether another class is added or not, its all in the name of fun.
best of luck to everyone in ALL classes.

Its going to be On like Donkey Kong!!! Whoooaaa! Another idea to to help wth the voting is a email contact list. A reminder that its time to vote. I read message on Global-Flat everday I can but during the last round I was checking the thread not always finding the right time to vote. Email Remiders with a direct link to the thread would be sweet. The only other Idea I was thinking about was a Post on the Main News Page as well. Leting everyone know whats going on. Ondo is going to be so Shocked when he gets back at the total responds this go around.

Yes Joe your right...but I am not even close to a expert level as of today's standard. I am what you call a Intermediate Rider. I have a few tricks under my belt and I am starting to put them together in links. Now if my hitchiker was spinning...or cross footed...or Turbined then Yeah I would be right in the mix. I would gladly join a Intermediate Class if one existed.

Keep on Riding!!

30 seconds each run

then avery quarterfinals or half and so on 15 seconds added to video

talking after video only after the voting ends

for 3rd and 4th place a best trick video

I've got a new bike coming in on friday so I don't know if I'll be used to it enough to actually pull any of my tricks but this will definitely motivate me to get used to it faster :)

I've been riding a total of 3.5 years spread over the last 10 years, lol. I just started riding after a 5 year absence 2 months ago.

its not about the velocity of the riding but 1 minute-runs are long, when you must do other tricks in every next battlevideo! so 30 seconds are ok i think to show what you can do...now we are not only 5 players...

So, the battles will take place there!

Still 2 expert spots are free!

So what is the schedual looking like? I Can be away from home working a few days on any given week. If I know when you need me to film if neccecary I will do it earlier rather than not. Did you also determin a new length of time. Are the first battles a random order or will we have 1-16 Qualifications to see whom we battle? Like 16 vs 1 ect.If it is random can you draw out brackets so we can see how the battles will flow with dates by our names so we can get prepared to record.

Keep on Riding!!

Alright here is my opinion for what its worth. I completely understood the no intermediate class when this first started. However, This has gotten big enough that even with a 16 rider cap on beginner, people are being left out. On top of that, there is a good 8 riders that belong in an intermediate class if there was one. With some of the guys that are entering beginner, its not even a contest anymore. So now you have people wanting to enter beginner that are being left out because the cap has been met. Then you have guys in that class that dont belong and are gonna kill the true beginners.
Now that this thing has grown, I think its time to add the intermediate class that sooo many other riders/participants have been asking for. I cant see where it will be any more difficult to vote on one more class.
Now the guys that werent ready for expert, but arent exactly beginner can have a legitimate class. Their spots in the beginner class can be filled by the riders who wanted to enter and are being left out. Plus, the winner in beginner has a class to move up to. Last battles winner was not ready to step straight to expert, but could have moved up to an intermediate class.

Just my opinion, but the addition of the intermediate class seems like the most logical/fair solution. What fun is a beginner gonna have competing against a rider who is just below expert status but not quite there? How accomplished would that same rider feel to win the beginner class anyways? When this was smaller, I completely understood your point of view, but now that its gotten bigger, I think these battles can more than accomodate the addition of another class. Not to mention, there may be EVEN MORE participants as I know several riders who are simply not participating due to not being beginners or expert.
Just my opinion for what its worth,
-MIKE

I totally agree. I would feel a lot more comfortable in an intermediate class but tried to go beginner(I was a little too late) because I definitely can't compete against the next class up.

I would be so stoked to ride in a intermediate class. I bet there would be about 8 of us in the begginer class that would ride in intermediate. It could free up some more spot so that everyone that wanted to ride could. I was talking with one of the riders that oringally signed up but then got bumped from the confusion but would gladdly ride if given the opportunity too.

Keep on Riding!

Ok, now I see, that there are more than 4 riders who want the intermediate class.
Ok, I'll create it, but the problem, that there are just 3 groups promoted and there isn't no deal about prizes in the 4th group! Maybe I can ask for something for the 1st place, but the other groups will recieve prizes for top 3 places.

I'll move some of the beginners to this class and the riders who were left out, back to beginners.

Intermediate list:
raddad67
chaincranker
DaviD (dave0)
Budz(is not Rodney!)
Huko
louisflat

Beginners are doing Single,2 Wheel tricks, Maybe linking 2 basic tricks togehter like Infinity Roll to Smoothy

Intermiedate are linking a few tricks togther Like Hang 5 to Steamrollers or Mega Spin to Decade.

Well I cant do links such as megaspin to decade, but my links are more advanced than infinity roll to smoothy.

Like fire hydrant to squeaker kind of thing.

when the last beginner signs up!

just lottery. But I'll put out those who are busy in a period of time.
Should I keep the battles random? Or already post a battles schedule? It would be good, but if something changes, then it's a mess.

This message is for all the people reading and participating in this thread. My self and Clint Majors were pretty succsesful in activly searching and asking riders to particiapte in the Masters Class so we could have maxiumum participation. Instead of continuing to look for people in this thread, reach out to your friends and fellow riders that you know can ride well enough to compete in the Master Class and personally ask them to ride in the competion. Maybe you know someone that is not on Global-Flat. You can have them sign up for an account and get them started. To get this last spot filled its going to take some personal efforts of members of the community. I am sure we can get this spot filled today if everyone that reads this message contacts 1 friend and ask them to particpate.

Keep on Riding!!

Hm, if there are videos then there will be comments, those pages were so long because of some arguing goin on. :D But if you mean searching for the battle videos to vote- they are reposted in the last and in the first post.

I'm very satisfied, look we got every group for 16 riders, just one beginner left.

kind of a silly question but just to clear things up.

suppose on my first video i do a hang 5 -> cliff hanger -> 720 bike flip -> out

i can still do it in the second video, not using the same footage?

Not a silly question at all because I was just talking on the phone and we were wondering the same thing. Could make for a very stratigic battle if we can only pull our hardest tricks 1 time.

It was the same in last round with ronny. You can use the same tricks, but you must change combos. It is hard to explain and to do in real, but that's the point riders shouldn't repeat their tricks and should show as much as they can.

If you can do a combo long as your run time, you can overspend it a bit. Like few seconds easily.

edit: woah, lots of work with this.

If you have any questions about the video lenght, please ask them before you post the video!

I'm still open to suggestions.

question about the 4days time limit? Since everyone is in a different time zone. Some one may not have a full 4 days because of the time differance. It would be nice if there was a counter to show how much time is really left from the day that you post. So everyone is clear about the 4 days. I think your about 8 hours ahead of me right now.

Well I'm not so strict about the day, sometimes I can't get to my pc. But it doesn't matter the day time, it's just 4 days from the time I post, no matter what time it shows you.
But in case, yes, I'm 8 hours ahead and +2 hours from 0 point. But it doesn't matter.

Fixed the rule about overspending time limit:

For example: If you got two combos: 26 and 32 seconds long. If you put them together in that order, then you get 58 sec and the combo did start 15 sec before the end(as mentioned before), but the main rule wich corrects it all: If your run is over time limit, it is allowed only then, IF THE LONGEST COMBO IS IN THE BEGINNING!

just skimming last few pages, am I correct in assuming:

1) 1 minute length video.
2) If you make it to the next round, you need to shoot another 1 minute video of more stunts.
3) You CAN use same stunts in subsequent videos, however, variety will help out.
Thanks for enduring this one.  ;D

Nop, first 8 battles are 45sec, next 4 are 1min, next 2 are 1min 15sec, the finals= 1min 30sec

A note:

If you want to battle in a particular period of time, then just send me a message and say in which battle you could enter. The maximum lenght of a battle is 6 days, often less.
Just send me a message and say in which battle you would like to be. For example after the count of days. That would fasten the things a lot and some would know when to check the forum.

Global Flat Online Battles Scoring

The Global-Flat Online Battles have been an important part of our online community. Ondo had done an amazing job organizing and maintaining order for everyone to enjoy posting videos and participating in the voting. Awhile back I suggested that the battles instead of ending but continue for the year by keeping points that carry over from round to round. Ondo brought up a very good point that with it being in a battle format there is no clear placing for each person. He then suggested that we some how use votes as points. What I have done is taken that idea and turned into a Excel Spread Sheet that would keep track of a scoring system that I have developed. I will explain what I have developed.

There are 4 ways to receive points.

1.    The First way you get points is to submit a video. This is important because not everyone has been submitting videos. We have a few uncontested wins. Depending on the class that you are in determines how many points you receive.

•   Beginner Class 100
•   Intermediate Class 110
•   Expert Class 120
•   Master Class 130

This is broken down with a +10 increments giving the advanced classes a bonus. The bonus is not so large that some one from a lower class can’t take a overall global win for the year.

The Exception to this rule is if a rider receives a penalty. It will be broken down like this

<5 sec -10% votes -10 for Submitted Video
<10 sec -20% votes -20 for Submitted Video
<15 sec -30% votes -30 for Submitted Video
<20 sec -40% votes -40 for Submitted Video

If your battle is uncontested and you submit your video you will receive the points for the submitted video.

2.   The second way you receive points is from the votes that were cast. Each vote = 1 point.
If your battle is uncontested the are not votes from the community. The winner of that battle will receive 1 vote to make them the winner. The other participate will not receive a point.

3.   The Third way is to win the Battle. Winning a Battle gives you 100 points.

4.   The Forth way is a bonus for percentage of votes that you when by.

50%-59% = No Bonus
60%-69% = 30 points
70%-79% = 60 points
80%-89% = 90 points
90%-99% = 120 points
100% = No Bonus (It was a uncontested win so no bonus will be given)

Those are the four ways to receive points. Those points are calculated and saved up for the year. At the end of the year we would have Top 3 Beginner, Intermediate, Expert and Master Class. We would also have a top 3 global winner. All classes are lumped together giving everyone a opportunity to win the title. The riders with the most points wins.

Here is the Excel Form that I have been working on. It still needs a little tweeking but it seems to be working good.

http://bmxfreestyler.com/globalflabattles.xls (http://bmxfreestyler.com/globalflabattles.xls)

I am volenterring my services to help out with this if Ondo and the Community see it as a viable resource to help keep track of points so we can crown some over all winners! Giving the people that particiapte the most and doing well some props!!

Keep on Riding!!!

Mark

Hey Mark,
That sounds like a really cool idea but would be a bitch for whoever is running it. I'm sure Ondo already has tons of work to do just for the next few months running these battles, let alone doing it year round.

Now if we could have some sort of automated way for generating the battles. Maybe even some web-service built into global-flat. The service could let people enter or leave the competition as they see fit. Then it would take care of scheduling battles between the entrants. Send messages/emails to the people when it's their time to battle. Then they can submit their video link to the service and there would need to be some moderators to check it and just make sure it's not cheating (no repost of old videos, etc) and check for time/penalties. And the system would automatically set up all of the battles/posts/notifications/voting/results.

I think if some sort of system was put together than this idea would be very viable. Without such a system it would be nightmarish to organize.

Is anybody here a web developer and wants a new project to work on? I could probably learn to do it (software engineer is my career) but I don't really have the time outside of work and riding to take on such a project.

I think you should toss out the bonus points for percentage won by, because some riders are in the wrong class some need to be up a class and some down class by the looks of the battles so far.

as much as mark's idea seems very good, i think it would generate too much work, and all the stats written down also depend on how many people vote..

Its really not as hard as it may seem. The only user input is Name,Votes,Submitted Video. The Excel sheet does all the calculations. I didn't intput all the info that you see on the form. Its generated with formulas.
You really don't want to know how long it took to figure out how to make the Percentage of Votes Bonus. My son and I sat here for hours trying to make it work. We finally came up with the correct formuula. It was a last minute thought to help give seperation other wise the only real seperation is in votes and class. I do understand the concern with people not being in the correct class. I think that will always be a issue unless there is a qualifier to place riders in a class.

Instead of disabling it. Lets meet at a happy medium. Instead of Bonus points let turn it into Points for Both competitors. We need that 1 more variable in there to help define a clear winner. So my suggestion is this. 53%= 53 Points. It gives another variable in for both riders. The issue of riders being in the wrong class is trully a different issue from points being collected but this will allow both competitors to generate points. I will work on the formula to calculate % in to points.

chaincranker- Your Idea is on point! We just need a someone who knows about this kind of stuff to make it happen. I was vollentering to enter in the information not asking Ondo to do more work. Until we can get it generated Automaticly it can be another contribution to the community from me.

I am Trully Excited where the Online battles are evolving to. I can't wait to see what happens next.

umm from the very basic course i had at school about school i found out that you can easily make excel or any basic database recieve information by an automated process using an .asp format page.

it could be made with a page to fill up using html form then simply use ASP to send it, although im not sure how to do it, and im not sure its the most effective way.

anyhow, it can be done pretty easily

http://bmxfreestyler.com/globalflabattles.xls (http://bmxfreestyler.com/globalflabattles.xls)

I spent the afternoon making changes to reflect the above conversation. Now the percentage is equal to points. However if there is a Uncontested win the rider recieves 50points not 100. The average win would be just above 50. I think that is fair. I have also change the lay out a bit to clean it up and get rid of some of the error gardge that was floating around. It really gives you a clear view of whats going on.

Ondo- How will you determine the next set of rounds..is there a system that your using? I don't have formulas for the rest of the rounds becuase I don't know what the plan is.

Enjoy!!!

just a quick tip for people filming themselves....

keep your water bottle...or backpack...or whatever other object you choose at the edge of the screen or on both edges..left and right...

you may need to check it a few times...but nothign sucks more then pulling a combo and then realising you were off-camera / too far to the side...

good luck

hope this helps

Why is the table on right lower side in every group is named beginner group?
And in the last battle "iluminati" should be without the ! sign.

My system is called pieces of paper. It's a pretty advanced lottery technology.
I can't say any plans until quarterfinals, then it will be easier.
But in experts the next battle will be:
Ovidiu M (the_ripper)
vs
misterpola

pieces of paper is a nice method for the first stage of battles, although for the next stage of battles (quarterfinals/semifinals) i think it would be much better if you chose people who did their previous battles earlier.

meaning: suppose A vs B, B wins and gets to quarter finals.

don't make a situation B has to battle again in a few days

I have generated many of the forumulas already so as each battle is over it will update after I enter in the information.

If you do not have Excel on your pc you can now view updates as a web page.

I've been following these battles and have made some observations, in no way intended to offend or anger, just some basic things I think that future competitors should be mindful of before signing up:

1. If you are not riding, don't enter in hopes of things changing. be riding, then enter.

2. If you do not have a way to film yourself, it's going to be impossible to make a video.

3. If you do have means to film yourself with your own camera, that is perfect, but get familiar with how to edit the video. It will save you a lot of headaches at crunch-time.

4.  Pay attention to the battles; with so many people dropping out, if you are entered, you need to be checking the thread daily. You may be asked to compete earlier than expected.

5.  If you've entered and know what you'd like to do for your video, it wouldn't hurt to go ahead and start filming and just sit on the video; that way when you're called, bingo. done deal.

I think this online battle is a terrific thing, and I've listed these things only in hopes of making it more successful, and not as negative criticisms.  I hope I'm not out of line saying this stuff, but these are issues that I've seen that I think can be improved upon to make this thing smoooth.

Hey Everyone,

I have have working very late each day trying to finish up the spreed sheet for the battles. The sheets I was using didn't calculate past the first round of battles. After pulling my hair out I finally have all the formulas I need to make it work proplerly. I even added some cells to by highlighted to find high scores faster.

WEB Version
http://bmxfreestyler.com/globalflabattles.htm (http://bmxfreestyler.com/globalflabattles.htm)

Excel Version
http://bmxfreestyler.com/globalflabattles.xls (http://bmxfreestyler.com/globalflabattles.xls)

I will have to go back to add videos again. Was anyone using that function of the sheet? I also took out the Highest votes at the end because it really didn't make sence past the first round. Anyhow you can find the highest votes for each class on each class page.

Keep on Riding!

Mark

August 12 Update

I am not sure why but the Web Version is acting funny and adding graphics that I didn't place.I am trying to figure it out. The Excel version still works great.

Happy Birthday Ondo!!!

David- Thanks for the feed back. I think I know what your talking about. I have gotten it this far. Not sure if I can pull it off. The Rank is Global positioning. If you select just Intermeidate it will and then by score it will place in order but leave the global rank instead of the intermeidate rank. I will have to give it some great thought to figure it out.

http://bmxfreestyler.com/globalflabattles.xls (http://bmxfreestyler.com/globalflabattles.xls)

New Updates

It now shows you a Overall Rank and Class Rank in the Total Group page. If your good about sorting you can sort by class and show just one class or if you wanted to know the 1st rank in each class you can sort by rank and it will show those for riders. It now also highlights in a pale yellow for the riders that didn't make it past the first round. It will highlight  the riders name in green for the 1st rank rider in that class. It is interesting how things are playing out. Very cool to look at the stats. I hope everyone enjoys

Keep on Riding!

P.S. Doing the Web page is just now working correctly. I will try and see if it will work latter with Clints program.

The Riders are randomly picked out at first. I placed each battle as they came up in a circular fashion. So first battle was Top Right, 2nd Top Left, 3rd Bottom Left..ect. From there we can flow the plan of who will battle who. The time that the battle takes place can still be vary it doesn't effect who will battle who.

Thanks for the comment. I have been spending a ton of time creating and updating.

+1

1st of all, great work on the excel sheets mark, really nicely done.  It does take ALOT of time to put that stuff together that well!

I am completely ok with however these battles are chosen.  I do agree with luke that it appears that all the quarterfinals have been picked already based by the excel sheet, and the first quarter final of expert is luke and spix just as the sheet shows.  I did think that they would be randomly picked at the time of the next battle as luke was thinking.  This way riders wouldn't know who they are competing with until the battle.  Not that knowing is a bad thing either..

Who is picking the battles ondo, raddad or both of you?

Are the quarterfinals battles already picked, as far as who is competing with who?

Anyways good work with the battles and good luck in Estonia ondo!

Thanks for the feed back. I created the spred sheet to help out with keeping track of the points that I had suggested. I asked Ondo if he liked the direction I was going and he gave his stamp of approval. The way I programed the spread sheet determins who battles who during the time they enter the brackets. This way everyone can know what's happening next. The first round defianly works out randomly because of peoples schedule. After that its all planed out. I guess you can say I help taken out some of the guess work. I don't have a clue if anyone is watching the points but its pretty darn cool how things are playing out. In Intermediate Global flat reporting is winning in points but I had more votes. He gained more points because of how much he won by.
Anyhow I hope everyone enjoyes the battles and the stats that are being generated. Clint and I were talking about making some trading cards from the battles with stats from a perticulare battle. I think its neet. I am not a numbers person but I love all this information.
If I am corect Ondo is using the pattern I provided. I am not at home so I can't see everything right now.

I was choosing randomly the first round battles. Now when the bracket is filled, I just follow the bracket. You can see everything there. And I'll post the quarterfinal battles in each group as they start. Just as in experts now.

Guess who's back.

Got 4th place in Estonia, Extreme battle event.
I'm very satisfied. Because just 1 of the rest riders is riding less years then me.
Got through qualification. 4 riders advanced to finals and then there was battle format. But I lost both of the battles, kinda messed up, didn't land a lot of combos and was exhausted already. But I landed last one f*cking sweet combo.
The floor was great, but got a bit slippery later. I wasn't used to the wood floor. But that's ok.

And the party after the comp was awsome. f*ck! I was the only one not drinking, but hell, I had so much fun. Laughing all the time.
Thought that I was gonna stay 2 nights there, but I reconsidered. Went home this evening. And now I'm here.

A thanks goes to estonian and finnish riders!

Don't wait for your battle and then just say that you can't ride. Send the video as soon as you can!

The Online Battles have Pushed me harder than I normally ride. This last Q final battle with Clint "A very close friend of mine" We both have taken very seriously and rode very hard for the camera's I even did 2 new combonations during my filming and that was very Monumental for me because I rarly land stuff and this time I was able to learn new combonations because of my determinations...all because of the ONLINE BATTLES!!

Thank you so Much Ondo for getting things started and motivating so many people to keep pushing personal progression.

There's something I've been wondering...

I've been under the impression that we are supposed to wait until our name/battle is called before we start filming (which I think would be more fair), but recently, Ondo, you keep mentioning that we should be filming and sending you our edits as soon as we can.

With the latter method, riders almost have an indefinitely large amount of time to put their edit together, for instance, I can start filming for round 3 now when it hasn't even begun yet.

While waiting for your name to get called raises inherent problems, such as how do we know when a rider filmed his tricks, it is a lot more fair in my opinion.

So yeah, clarification?  Just so we're all on the same page and all.
Title: Re: online battle main thread- questions/suggestions here.
Post by: ondo on August 28, 2009, 12:21:56 AM
I'm just saying it, because everyone is geting busy now and should film something before.
Some may film for round 3, that's ok :D But as I keep in mind, that gaining some time(filming later) is better- I can learn new combos. I think that will keep others from using old videos.

New Registration Page
New Trading Cards. The cards are linked to the spread sheet and stats update when the sheets are updated.

If all participating riders  could email me or post a Great photo of you riding that I can place on your card..that would be very helpful. There are a ton of riders and its taking about 45 min per card so it going to take some time. I just need photos to keep it going.

UM, I was thinking. maybe for the finals, any link or trick could be used, even if its a repeat.

Or maybe just for beginners as people are running out of tricks?
I don't know, its just if I was to make it to finals, my video would probably consist of a peg wheelie, tailwhip and merry go round.

you could just switch 1 trick/switch and it would be a different link..

although im not saying you should give beginners/intermediate the option to repeat...  ;D

Everyone can repeat links(switches/tricks), but not combos!

And at least I'll give my vote to the rider, who shows more variety during the competition.
I know there was some talk going on about not to judge by what rider does in previous runs or somewhere else, but I'm taking this competition as like a real life one, where you have multiple runs and showing the same tricks doesn't help!

ye of course more diverse range of tricks and different types of tricks count more in my opinion, but you can't also expect a person to do something entirely different every time.

With that being said, we both agree with each other and just imply it differently so no point spreading this over large amount of pages.

I have a question,comment,concern...  I am not trying to ruffle any feathers or start any crap, but I don't think it's right/fair to make it to the finals on an uncontested win.  No offense to anyone but for example, this has happen in the Beginner Class.  If I lose my battle here in a few days I would automatically get third and I am competing, when someone else gets an uncontested win and basically has 2nd locked in.  Just stating a minor concern so please don't torch me for it...

But if Trickzta can't post anything and the time is over? That's that. I don't like these uncontested wins, but if someone can't film, there is no other solution. I've been accommodating anyway.
You won't be automatically in 3rd. You'll battle Trickzta for it.

For as much as I don't like a uncontested win, Honestly what are the alternatives? I since I read this dissucssion this morning I started thinking. What are the other possiblites if 1 rider can not submitt video in specified time?

1. Give a Extention- Ondo has been bending over backwards to accomidated everyones schedule.

2. Change order of Battle - Ondo has done this as well but there is only so much that can be changed with out disrupting the whole flow on the contest.

3. Allow older footage from a previous battle with penalty - Ondo expressed his opinon on this option and it takes away from the spirit of battle which is to get out side and ride

These are the only options that I can think of. Can anyone else think of another option that everyone can agree with?

Otherwise Uncontested Win is the best option that is avalible. Personally its not my favorite option but what else is there to do?

Keep on Riding!!

If the person thats in lign to battle..cant battle..then i feel the person he beat out last..should be giving his go..granted he would have to be able to present a video rather quickly..but its still a thought, and keeps the thing going smoothly..as i know ive been getting a lil antsy with some of the fluidity.

Post by: raddad67 (Mark) on September 26, 2009, 08:10:12 PM
Here is another thought as well. I would mean a little bit more work but what if when you sign up for the battles that you send in 4 videos for each round. Prelim, quater, Semi, Final. If you make it to the next round you have either 4 days to send in your a newer video or you go with the one you pre submitted. That would elemitant uncontested wins. Riders would not have to worry about things coming up during the month that prevents them from filming. It would also mean Flow of the Contest would be more consitant. Like I was saying if you do make it past your round and you wanted to re submit a vide you would have the 4 day grace period to do so or you go with your orignal submission.

See what happens when we keep talking...Ideas start flowing!!!

It's not like I like these damn un-contested wins, I like people to watch my videos! my first video I have like  350 views, my second and third, like 70 (and I know like half of those are my mom showing the video to her co-workers)...but I also don't think I should be punished for it: I've submitted all of my videos on time with no alterations to the schedule or extensions, my videos have all been hardcore progression from me, and in my opinion stood a great chance of winning the battles I was in.

-raddad style idea to work from-NEEDS REFINEMENT

maybe next time everyone can submit videos at once (so like all 16 videos) and then people go and rank their top 3(4,5,10 I don't know) and we kick out the 4 (or whatever) with the lowest votes. repeat. this way you get away from the battle format problem where the second best person can be taken out first round by the best, and therefore not get second (or third or fourth) overall... we would have to use post/pm votes since I don't think you can assign values to our polls...
Anyway I've seen other online competitions work like this and it seems to generally be accepted as a fair way to go about it...

I'm really not trying to come off as a whiney jerk.  I understand that uncontested wins are going to happen.

An idea: maybe in this case you have the finals... The loser would then face the loser of the semifinal battle... In my case is particular... I've been really sick with pnemonia and have had no computer... I don't think I am going to be well enough to film a video by monday... So, maybe you have the final between trikzta and flatwax and then I would face the loser for 2nd and 3rd?

When a rider enters a real life contest, they have at most typically 1 minute to show their stuff, sometimes even less.  Four days should be ample time for anyone competing to do a couple tricks and film them.  I know that sounds harsh, and I hate to come off that way, but it's true.  The lagging takes interest from the total radness of the online battles.

Solutions? If it looks like you're not going to get the video done at all, let Ondo know ahead of time.  Like ya'll, I don't like seeing uncontested wins either.  How about; if one guy is unable to get a video done, a second chance is awarded to the last rider that lost?

edit: I just saw that SNOOP said pretty much the same thing already. my bad :)

Jim Mckay came up with a very clever and fool proof way to rid problem of uncontested battles for the 1st round. The only way to sign up is to submit a 45 second video to Ondo along with the class.

If there was a 2 week sign up period. There would be enough time for people to get something on video and have stuff ready for the next battle as well. There could be a thread in Media or in here called After Battle Video to show case the tricks that didn't make it into your vid or because you didn't make the next round.

Awesome!!

I have this idea about uncontested wins.
If someone signs out and can't post a video twice(like for 2 rounds) he receives disqualification for the next competition.
What do you think?

About the video sending during sign up- it's great!

Ok, I think next round I'll be more strict. It's becoming a chaos because of rider personal problems.
Next round there should be just maximum 2 extra days in emergency case and I shouldn't give such exceptions, just because guys are closer to the final.

How someone decided to set up their bike should not count against them.
So long as there are two wheels, a frame, and handle bars, it should not matter.  Counting votes against Ondo for his lack of cranks is as audacious as counting votes against Chad Johnston for his pegless bike.  After all, a flatland bike has 4 pegs, right?
Title: Re: online battle main thread- questions/suggestions here.
Post by: JFos on October 19, 2009, 09:48:01 PM
your bike is still a bike with or without pegs.

Websters definition is:

Bicycle

Definition: Bicycle
Bicycle
Noun
1. A cycle that has two wheels; moved by foot pedals.

Verb
1. Ride a bicycle.

crankless ness isnt riding a bike.

this defintion doesnt point out pegs or brakes.

you cant cork bats and when you get to bat you dont suddenly just get to decide to use a tee.

so your saying anythign goes no matter what advantage it gives?

not saying people shouldnt set THEIR bikes up how they feel best or fit to.

To compare cranklessness to riding without pegs is silly Tyler. There is no advantage to taking the pegs off other than weight. Chad didnt take them off to save weight.. While 100% of the reason to take your cranks off is to "softball" it.

I think it IS an issue.

why should we draw the line at two wheels? Because I mean its freestyle right?

Why couldnt i just walk around doing the michael jackson with a pair of bars in my hand?

but how about taking this idea serioulsy.

Why dont we vote on it?

You can chose to ignore the results or whatever...I mean this things ALL YOU.

If we can collectively decide who wins...with obvious flaws we can define what a bike is collectively. Right?

Your not riding a bike by any existing definitions other than Tylers.

can we use training wheels?

wheelie bars?

Just putting it out there, early bicycles didn't have cranks. (Look up a "Dandy horse")

It wasn't even until the 1860s, more than forty years later, that they actually put a crank on the front wheel.

I'd have to agree with this. No room for error. Or have a panel of 20 registered judges.
There is alot of friends voting for sure.

Crankless? Well each to their own. I personally don't like it alot, but would NEVER not vote for someone simply because I disagreed with their bike setup, geez.
Crankless, brakeless, seatless, stemless, chainless, pegless, whatever, its your bike.

I agree now with the misterpola's idea.
But will the vote posts will stay or they gonna be deleted later? Because it'll be such a mess if there are like 2 pages of voting for each battle.
There are 2 things which can't be solved about this idea:
- People will know the results before voting
- People can change their vote by editing

I don't know about the judges though. There aren't a lot voters anyway, so I think it should be open to everyone, maybe just that post count..

Tyler thats a one time adjustment and i dont think ondo's ever ridden flatland with cranks to feel that variance..

Dunno.

and rad255 the modern definition is with a drive train. They explain the same exact evolution in the definition of bike and pointed out the first thing to RESEMBLE a bike. We might not even be defined as human based on an interpretation of what human is in 8 million years.

i dont realy care what the guy does. If anyone followed the argument over the various threads i was more concerned about how someone thinks they have knowledge on something they arent familiar with. And this ego.

I do think its unfair however to enter contest's with clear advantages over other riders.

Tyler, had ondo picked up a crankless bike two days before the batles you might have a point about getting use to weight changes. i mean you have to deal with the same thing lets say if your bike was stollen  the day of a contest and you rode a S&M Sabbath in 2009. Your not going to find anyone riding a 40lb plus bike. But atleast the dissadvantage your giving yourself is changing from one bike to the other.

I dont want to hinder freestyle which can go on freely on any corner across the globe...I just think standards should exist if your going to have competitions. Sure this issue would be ten times more important if we were talking about differences in thousands of dollars in prizes/booty.

Or it might be serious enough if we took what we were doing serious enough money asside.

If a crankless rider and cranked rider lets say were clones and did the exact same lines and style to the T....could you realy give a vote to the crankless guy?

I give clear kudo's when I'v' judged contest's to people who have done the same tricks lets say without brakes. Flips without brakes are tougher. obviously that not the only consideration...a squirrely flip without brakes loses on style.

Guys without legs in this day can outrun top athletes with legs. i dont realy think we should be entertaining the idea of chopping our legs off to be less than human. not saying people without legs arent human because of the complexity..just my legs feel pretty damn human and I dont think human evolution is going ahead without legs.

Ego would be explaining to established pros how shaky their hitchikers are.

Or getting on newbie flat vids asking "whats so special?"

the "he who smelled it dealt it" defense is flimsy.

If i think you have a run away ego that doesnt equate to my ego in any way what so ever.
'
2/3rds?

good but its still just a "one time adjustment" and its still not a bike.

im not searching for way's and means to quarrel. it landed in my lap the instant you started acting like a dick actually. My ego if it existed wouldnt allow me to give the compliments i've given you.

i believe in what i believe enough to talk about it..unlike lots of people.

So you stopped running cranks to create a new challenge for yourself kind of like how Chad dropped his pegs?

no,  you did it so you wouldnt ever have to deal with cranks moving...cranks hitting your shins...cranks hitting your heels your toes...maintaining cranks...all you have to do at the end is make sure you get to home base. The back pegs.

Cane whe get a locked thread  for just video submissions.  No talk. I want to be able to go to a thread and see all the vids back to back with no interruptions.

You mean like look back at the previous battles? I could repost all the videos in the main threads 1st post..
Title: Re: online battle main thread- questions/suggestions here.
Post by: ondo on October 25, 2009, 07:23:53 PM
i guess you could do that but i was thinking a new thread all together with all the vs battles so one could view the progression. Some of these guys are really stepping it up. Could easily be one of the most viewed threads of all time. and even give some unknowns some spotlight.

Oh, yea right. When this competition ends, I'll post all the videos in a new thread in general section.

I think if we have Pro battles, There should be some sort of $ involved. They pay no $ but can have the opportunity to win $. I have thought about this for some time now. If we had enough people contribute we could make a very nice purse. I would be willing to put up some $ just to see the INSANE videos I know would happen. Just think if we found 60 people to donate $20 bucks to the Pro Purse. That would definatly be insintive to have Pro riders put together some bomb links. Also good ads for their sponsors too!!

Keep on Riding!

Sounds great.

I think I could sell my soul to get sponsors for the next round. Probably gonna send some information to some bike companies. But it would be better if someone else wrote the message..

If anyone has an idea or a potential sponsor for the battles, go for it.

Said it time and time again... A paypal sort of..pot..like a texas holdem..big tourney bracket..and a few weeks/months time frame to get the word out. Would definately work, and i think the interest would be insanely high. Now... I do think the pros should have to pay aswell, just like an entry fee for a contest.."You cant run something, without atleast an entry fee." just makes the purse that much bigger...And also could evnentually fund its loan site dedicate for this reasoning alone.

sorry for being so vocal lately.  so much rain.    but there should also be a way to deal with the uncontested wins. maybe have that rider battle the loser of the comparable battle of the same bracket.

yeah there could be a plate round?

would probaly be better in an open tournament format though

It would be fun to have smaller whiplash battles or turbine battles. Like how many times can you turbine a steamroller or how many whiplashes can you do in 1 minute or something like that.

Like a global-flat record book. ;D

(Apologies for the noob post in advance... but...)  This is SO awesome!!!  I haven't ridden flat in 20yrs. and I don't have my bike yet, but now I'm just dying to practice.  Fantastic idea, who ever came up with this! I get so competitive when it comes to flatland.  I remember an old friend of mine learned to Grasshopper and I spent hours, during a rain storm!, literally crying my eye's out until I finally got it down.  I just hated anyone having a one-up on me.

Hey Ondo, when are these battles starting again?

it's really cool that I'm starting to recieve that kind of questions more and more lately.

so. I'll open a topic in the general section about the judges and some sugestions of course, but I have an idea about the sign up, so it won't start already. Probably after 2 weeks. And the battles would start somewhere in april. The 1# battle comp started in begining of april, so it's okay.

I'm kinda judging by myself, but it's really a lot of snow here in Latvia and when the pavement started to dry, it snowed again, oh. And I believe it's a problem with riding for some too. Sorry, for this delay, I know that some have practically summer all year long, but let's wait a bit shall we.

can we repeat tricks, say, if it's a better ride out or smoother?
as beginners our bags aren't as varied as the other classes.

Ondo right now I can't upload videos because my email is "temporarily" suspended (at least I think that's why I can't upload) but as it stands right now I can't do another video if I happen to make it past the first battle.  I was wondering if someone else could take my place if I can't get this fixed soon?  If not then that's cool but I'd hate to take up a spot if I can't even continue past the first video. Thanks.

I think you have different solutions:

1) just tell me to leave your battle the last one till things get clear

2) upload the video in a different video site and/or with a different e-mail

Not because of i want to win..
I just really think these classes are f*cked up.. beginners is gonna look like intermediate, and intermediate is no intermediate anymore..
Look at this BEGINNER video:

Second 2010 year flatland battle. (http://vimeo.com/11961460)

I signed up for intermediate but this guy is as good as me, or even better.. Hang 10's.. i can't do that!

Look at this INTERMEDIATE video:

GF Bat Round 3 (http://vimeo.com/11347621)

X footed Nosewheelie's?

Denny Battle Video #1 (http://vimeo.com/11117951)

thousand turbines + barflips

I do respect these riders alot, nice flow and styles but I just don't think its fair for the other competitors..

Ondo said this was a WEAK battle and that this was close to Beginner class:

what! if this is beginner, then I'm really gonna sign up beginner next time!

One thing is for sure these online battles really push people to progress.
When I first submitted my video over a month ago I could barely link anything, now I can link 2, 3 even 4 tricks together.
I'm out every night & I've been riding hard every weekend busting my ass, never before have I ever felt progression this fast.

I've also noticed this with other beginner riders, we are ALL pushing it so damn hard.
I think a bunch of us beginners will be moving up to Intermediate next round, which is great and why these battles are so helpful and amazing.

Hey Wouter,

I think you're being too hard on yourself and not giving yourself enough credit. You can't ever really look at it as "I can't do THAT trick, so that guy is better then me" because they'll always be someone doing something you can't do. From what I recall about your runs, you were really smooth and were progressing really well with your tricks; I think you did a steamroller to crackpacker combo a few times, and I honestly have only landed that link maybe 5 times in the past. The thing is, I don't practice it... just like you probably haven't practiced Hang 10's as much as Hellzcat has. Don't beat yourself up because you don't have EVERY trick in your pocket right now.. besides, who's to say Hellzcat hasn't watched your videos and been like "damn, can't do that! That guy's good!" lol  Everyone can't always be at the same point with their riding, and some guys spend a lot more time on certain tricks then others. Also, since flatland is based upon progression, you have to expect that every contest the overall level of riding will step up in each class... watch contest footage from any Japan comp and look at the beginner/novice class. It's absolutely nuts, but like always, there's riders at the top and then riders that are new to the sport... within every class, there will always be "seasoned" riders and "rookie" riders. Rookies feed off of the seasoned riders and step their game up to eventually be at the top of their class next time.

Bottom line, you're a good rider with a solid foundation with 2 choices: push harder or give up. Choose wisely  ;D

wouter, don't think of these online battles too much.
i would somewhat agree that the classes might be a little messed up. the first 2 videos, i would put them in one class above. (i think the first guy was in beginner since the first round?)

but yeah, i got knocked out on my first battle when i know i'm better than some of the other beginners that won their first battle. never really stopped me from riding. there will always be some that will be better than me in my class. i did the online battles just to show the global flat community what i got and am not afraid to show it even though i suck :P
i ride not to win these online battles, but to progress and have fun. there is no better feeling than progression for me. almost no other stress from life can change that.

ONDO,

A question about the rounds, when is the closing date for ONLINE BATTLES 2010?

Neela

have no idea. this one will end soon. then sign up for the next one could start in July. hmm maybe it would be by the end of September.

can't say exactly you know.

I have to say, i am really loving these online battles. I just had found out about them probably a week or two after the sign ups for the 3rd online battles had ended. I will certainly be participating in the beginner division next time out and i really cant wait. So my question for you Mr. Ondo is when will the next round of online battles be scheduled to begin? Hopefully fairly soon so i am able to put in a lot of time before school starts again!

nothing is scheduled, but as you know, the 3rd round will end in about 10 days, the sign up for the next round could start around 10th July.

don't forget that sign up is only with qualification videos, so get ready!

well, I mean, the sign up could start pretty fast, but as in this round, it toke a long time for everyone to send their videos in and you were already anxious.

I'm going on a trip to Germany in probably 12th July, back on 24th maybe. I could just leave the sign up open, or I could open it after I get back.

Well, suggestions, please.

how does everyone else feel about it?

Ondo, just keep me posted on the closure date for 2010 battles, (I am in the mode of flip of coin, meaning time to take a trip).

If the closure is to bring about a Round 4 in the various categories, we'll support the finial riders who will place first only.

Cheers,
Neela

Since you just completed or completing Round 3 is there going to be Round 4?

I take Round 4 would head into July, Aug so I'll check in now and then only, but I will not be around.

I want to give prizes for final Round whenever it ends, and only to the riders placing first.

Okay, great! :)
i'm sure someone will let me know if this is dickish, but
didn't a lot of us wait for the winter to be over so you guys
were able to do this?  why do those who waited for you guys
not get the same consideration? while your winters are cold,
our summers are extremely hot and humid.  i have to ride
at night just to get anytime at all. a lot of us southerners are
having a very hard time getting anything dialed, and it would
be nice to have a little more time to prepare. hell, it'll be july
in just a couple of days.
flame me if you want, but i remember the outcry, when some
of us wanted to go ahead and start, because your weather sucked.

My suggestion would be to start the next round in the beginning of the Fall, mid September.
That would give people plenty of time to work on new tricks & links over the summer.

Also I think it would be cool to have some kind of Plaque & Trophy made up for the winners, I think it would be cool to have something to hang on the wall.

Winter is when I ride the most. The heat is more detrimental to riding than cold weather no matter which way you look at it. Riding in the cold is an inconvenience, but riding in the heat is straight up dangerous.

Why is KHE dragging their feet on the prize packs? It's almost been a month now.

I haven't taken my bike out of the house in almost 2 weeks because of the 105 plus degree Vegas weather running rampant right now. I remember trying to ride when I first moved here and dealing with a gnarly sun/heat induced migraine the whole next day... at night it's still in the 90's, so that's not much better. Plus hot wind on top of all that. Suuuuuuucks...

wow thats friggin hot at night!! how come you moved there zoffy?

I still ask myself that every day, PZA... haha... actually, Vegas is pretty cheap as far as cost of living, so I gave it a shot. Basically, my mortgage on a 3 bedroom house in Vegas will only net me a tiny studio apartment in Northern California (my home region). But, I guess you get what you pay for... =P  actually, Vegas weather is great. It's just the summers that suck balls...

Man Vegas weather sounds like Texas weather.  The humidity here though is just brutal because of the Gulf of Oil in our back yard.  You know it's time to stop riding when breathing starts to feel like you're being water-boarded.

If it's still hot like this next round you can count me out.  The trophy idea is cool

it wears you down.....can result in crazy things happening like constantly walking around in a pair thongs and speedos or less  ^_^

haha  ;D

5Hane what time are you riding.because hypothetically i can still ride everyday when its not raining. but i ride from 7- 9

Usually from 10am to around 1pm or so.  Any later than that and I get loopy from the heat ...humidity is what's really killing me though. I work nights so my schedule is a little weird.

welp I had been tossing around the idea of just toughing out the heat and going on with the next round but I guess the hand of god decided to make the decision for me. My camera died on me today. Lots of whirring and a bit of grinding, then bleeooooop. nada. Oh well.

Thanks for posting up the prize list, Ondo! I think I'm pretty much retired from the battles for now... fun times, but I'll be sitting out the next few rounds because I'm really shut down till at least September - October for decent riding time. I'm planning to still tape a few random links every so often to put up for fun, but no more online battles for me. At this point, I'm sort of itching to compete in a real live contest again just to see if I can hang  ;D maybe another KOG if I can scrape up the funds for a trip to Japan next year or whatever nearby event pops up in the U.S.

This isn't entirely true.  I've received no email or reply to my PM to you asking for the addresses.

I've since contacted the winners myself and gotten the info, but it's the principle...  to end on a good note, these battles are great for riders and I will always support their passion to progress, at whatever level of riding they are at.
keep riding!

maybe you can ask some your friends.. for example I have a sh*tty camera, so I always borrow a better one from a friend.

I'm doing really good. Riding hard all August, going to events. Right now front wheel is still f*cked up, so riding just backwheel, still it's so awesome, a lot of new tricks!

good luck, man!

I think that dude up there is saying

our submited battle video is to be against all other submitted videos
with voting taking out the videos that win the least.

kind of like how american footbal teams play eachother
3 wins to 5 losses
instead of how it is now - if your first battle and you dont win
its over for you right away....   and not so much fun that way I guess  maby ?
Title: Re: online battle main thread- questions/suggestions here.

I am also thinking of joining the next battle group as it motovates me to film my riding
wich I have been wanting to do for some time now....

last battle I was put in intermediate group against rad dad video
and I lost to him...   im wondering if my skill level is more beginner or intermediate ?
this is all the footage I filmed that day of my riding for the 45 seconds of video  lol

btw - how long will the video be if I do enter ?   my riding seems to take a good while if I have a rolling link   so im not shure if I can even fit it in 45 seconds   lol

3. Who decides what class you're in?

1. When sign up is open, you send an x minutes long qualification video, which is then used as the first battle video

2. Next round will start on March or so

3. You can sign up for a class, but me and/or judges will check if that's the right one.

Basicly I get the videos and I know the level what each group should be, so I sign them up in the right group. If I have problems choosing the class, I discuss it with judges.

With only one round this year, is the format going to be the same as previous rounds? Or will it change?

It's gonna be the same. I know it's a bit tough in a way, but it brings some extra action and is different than ground tactics..

The rules basicly will be the same, will work on some adjustments..

There won't be any common judging standard, it depends on the judges, but in my view, yes, originality is an important thing!

there's a list of riders who have signed up, so we're starting the competition when there are 16 riders in each class!

Don't worry, just go out next weekend and film some good stuff! 50 seconds long..

I hope to see some edits of out takes from filming, after this round; i.e. crashes and stuff like that. Those are great.

If you want the battles to be random, and don't want finger pointing at one person, here is the solution.  Please think about how easy this could be and don't dismiss it as to complicated because it is not.

Judges are trusted parts of these battles, correct?  Include judges in the random process of picking battles using the below system.

Here is the system to pick random battles

#1) When ondo gets all 16 riders in a group filled he assigns each rider a random # 1-16

#2) ondo then PM's four out of the five judges his list of riders with their assigned numbers
(these judges could be called the List holders)

   - If it is a class that ondo is judging he sends the assigned rider list to only three judges
and he is the fourth List holder.

#3) at the same time he PM's the "list holders" the list of riders with their assigned number,
he also PM's the 5th judge and tells him to pick the random battle numbers (This judge
would be called the Battle Picker and DOES NOT get the rider list with assigned
      numbers from ondo)

#4) The "Battle Picker" judge submits a random battle list of just numbers to the "List
Holders" for all 8 qualification battles like this example list I made.  It took me 2 minutes
to make this list I just typed the numbers 1-16 and then cut and pasted to make sure I
didn't use the same numbers twice. easy!

Example of Battle Picker's list

Battle 1 = 9  Vs. 2

Battle 2 = 14 Vs. 11

Battle 3 = 5 Vs. 16

Battle 4 = 7  Vs. 10

Battle 5 = 15 Vs. 4

Battle 6 = 6  Vs. 1

Battle 7 = 13 Vs. 8

Battle 8 = 12 Vs. 3

#5) The finished random qualification list of riders names for all 8 battles are then put in the
forum for everyone to see by either ondo or one of the list holders that now knows the
       randomly picked battles.

#6) Repeat steps for the quarter finals.

                                                        Benefits of this system

- Now 4 judges and ondo know which riders are going to ride against each other.  ondo or anyone else can't change these battles because all the judges will know about the change.

- The Battle Picker would change for the quarter finals, and the finals wouln't need one because it is only two riders.

- It would take cheating between one of the "list holders" and the "battle picker" to fix the battles, or between ondo and a "battle picker".  So at least two people would have to be in on it to cheat, so judges wouldn't want to risk their integrity by asking the other to cheat..  Plus, the battle picker would not always be the same judge.

- Nobody could point the finger at only ondo for anything,  and since ondo rides in master it may look more fair to the other riders in master.

                                                              Problem Solved

Thanks for the good system. Yes, this looks good and we should take it in action next round..

I like the randomizing site too, that's really easy, still it could involve cheating..

Ondo,  I noticed you are not making a new post for the battle videos in Round #6 within each thread, but just replacing the previous ones with the next battle..  I would suggest you do it the way you used to, so people won't miss battles, and in the future the thread can be looked at and see exactly how things went down..

Could you also please let judges KNOW when battles are beginning and what categories they are judging? I was under the impression I was judging everything and that the battles hadn't started and I was sorely mistaken to find out a whole round had already passed....?

Anyway, it's possible to watch the videos on Twitter.
