Title: Long distance flatland.
Post by: AddisonM on May 17, 2009, 04:25:06 PM
Whats the greatest distance you've pedaled on your flatland specific bike?

I'm debating if I want to try and go from Toronto to Kitchener today.

how far is far?

My roomate thinks I'd cramp half way. It would be about 15 km/h for 10 hours, I'm starting to realize it's a silly idea, I still want to try it though.

15minits by car to get to the station, then the train takes a while to get to NYC, but depending on where the train stops, by the giant postoffice in the city, so from there ride to any spot where i am going

ha ha this takes me back! i had a trials mtb single speed geared 20-16  9 years ago. me and a mate used to ride a 26mile round trip to a ride spot every day for months . The 13 mile trip there was a ball ache as it was mostly uphill , going home  was ok though. The  worst thing about micro gearing is people laughing at you while driving past as your legs are going round at 20mph while your bike is going at 2mph. i had enough and learned to drive now i am lazy  fatter and struggle to balance  hence the name........

don't do it
10 hours? thats way too long for pedaling even on a regular bike.
even after a few km you ass, feet and back will die. flatland bikes are not for travelling especially for this long distance.
imagine something goes wrong (puncture, chain break) you'll be stuck in the middle. and if you're planning to carry a big bag that's even worse.
you should find another way of getting there.

Do it!  Just to see if you can.  Might take all day...but could you imagine the sense of accomplishment!

ive ridden 30 miles straight on my bike...

top speed is 32 miles per hour (big gearing ;)  28/9) i ride around with not aim when aim bored, and can ride forever without hands zipping inbetween cars.

Guys at the bike shop i work at are always telling me to get into racing.... they didnt believe i could do 32 on my bike till they put me on the computer xD

This was taken from an interview with a friend of mine...   it tops all of ya's.  :)

I remember hearing about a trip you made earlier this year where you rode your bike 80kms to another town... what's the story?
Well it was in a town called Hyden in that great state Western Australia. It was either wait a week for the bus, or ride to Merredin. I got my provisions at le marche, & hit the smooth asphalt, the whole trip was flat as the deux flats I got 'flat out bro', anyway back to the freakin story; so I rode about 80kms the first day & arrived in Narembeen were I had my beauty sleep. I woke up the next morning & proceeded to question my sanity for this journey of self discovery, then I rode the next 70kms to arrive in Merredin - "go figure".

I'm not on crack, I just think it would be quite a journey, I'll probably pass on the idea, for now.. sometime this summer I'm going to try it.

you wish to ride 113 km
you perform futile tasks
you can talk the talk but
you cannot walk the walk
you cannot do a whiplash but
you aspire for whoppers

Dude you're going to be in pain.  That would be a challenge on a road bike, but ridiculous on a BMX bike.  What comes first to mind is the fact that your ass will weigh much more on your seat since it's lower.  Your ass will wear out faster with time, and also with distance, since you cannot go as fast.  I guarantee that pain/friction in your ass will stop your trip very shortly.

Road bike dude.
Nothing like the rush and less stress when hauling in lifetime riding.

he wishes for a journey
he wishes for a "trip"
he wishes for an escape
his labours to escape failure are fruitless

Hmm sounds cool, just make sure you arent running your post slammed, no plastic seat, a break would help just in case you might need to stop before a beer bottle hits you in the face.
And a try rig a back pack onto your bike or a small bag for small necessities, like water, tube, and a few tools, who knows what the road in front of you will be like.
