Title: Macneil seat mods
Post by: the beard on January 01, 2009, 07:06:12 AM
very fast (15min) mod to the mcneil seat to make the back of it shallower, and easier to grab. I'd like to fill the cavities with something that is smooth or can be sanded smooth. I'm open to suggestions. I rode it tonight and it feels a thousand times more comfortable to grab than stock. The back part of the seat had about 5/8" material removed, so it's quite a bit thinner.

Could fill it with bondo, or would that be a bit too heavy?

yeah, probably so; I'm a weight freak. The one other idea I've had so far is that expanding foam.

That sounds like a much better idea.

Looks really good, I might do this myself - let me know when you find out how to fill those holes

they look really nasty atm, but if you can get a good solution to the holes then im all over it.

will do!

*the edges look a bit funky in the shots, but they've all been sanded and deburred, so no sharp spots :)

Nice mod, I like it, looks good. You could use a hot glue gun to fill in the holes....Russ

Its hard to tell the size of the holes but id be more worried about catching a finger in there rather than the sharp edges.

A layer of fabric or somthing over them would stop your fingers going into them, its just how to fasten it all down.

Plastic welding is the solution. Using the piece you cut off, weld it back over the holes with this.

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/PLASTIC-WELDER-KIT-FOR-CANOE-KAYAK--ALL-PLASTIC-REPAIRS_W0QQitemZ180315776813QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20081223?IMSfp=TL081223123001r5359 (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/PLASTIC-WELDER-KIT-FOR-CANOE-KAYAK--ALL-PLASTIC-REPAIRS_W0QQitemZ180315776813QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20081223?IMSfp=TL081223123001r5359)

Second option would be to cut it from the inside somehow with a dremel or grinder, removing all the unwanted areas, then bend it over the holes and finishing it off nicely with a file. Then you will need black silicone, and sparingly seal it up.  Cure time is 24 to 48 hrs.

that welder is pretty cool, but seriously expensive. tomorrow I hope to get this thing done. I'll let ya'll know how it turns out and post a pic. to EZChris: those holes are fairly small. I wasn't able to stick a finger in one, which is good :)

RTV .. its a silcon type adhesive.. trust me.. turn the bike upside down, put something in the holes.. rough up the inside of the holes so the adhesive will stick and then fill it up to the top. Its really light, you can get it in black to match the plastic, it sticks and forms really well long as you dont play with it too much, it will cure in about 12 hours AND, its removable. It will take some cuts but once you chunk the big peices out, you can just use a pair of needle nose pliers and pull the rest of the stuff of..

DISCLAIMER: i have never tried this on plastic. We use on metal on my job for temp patching of pressurized areas... I think its made for metal but im 90% sure it will work on plastic also..

Jim you could try 3M Window-Weld Super Fast Urethane.... it's like RTV but dries more like a solid plastic...I used it a lot for modifying motor mounts on cars.

They sell it at Autozone and Advance auto...I dunno how it would hold up to repeated drops though...I dunno what really would hold up to that other than the original plastic mold other than hardware???

Well, the seat mod is pretty much done. I feel good about it. In a little bit once it's cured I'll try it out, but it seems like a success.  I used Great Stuff expanding foam (under $5), masking tape, wide chisel, a rag, some solvent, and a hair dryer.

I don't have pictures of the actual removal of plastic (step 1), but here's how I did it-keep in mind I have access to a LOT of tools.  First I 'drew a line' with masking tape on the outside of the seat marking the material to be removed. Next, I used an angle grinder with 80g paper to trim down the seat to the desired size.  Next, I used a jitterbug with 240 grit paper to remove flash and smooth out edges. A die grinder with maroon scotchbrite was used next to smooth the finger-holds. Finally, a pad sander with grey scotchbrite was used to give the entire area a silky, even finish.  I took a burrwhip to the insides of the pockets and removed the burrs. Finally, I blew out all the chips with air.  Keep in mind I had a shop full of tools on hand. much of this can be done with tools more readily available to the general rider.

this first step proved to be a really good idea. it kept the foam from getting all over the place.

a shot of the stuff I used to finish the seat; just things on hand.

I put a bit too much in there :)

chisel was used to pick off the excess, and tape was removed. I sprayed solvent on the rag and cleaned up the overspray.

I am impatient by nature :)

and the finished product, light, soft, and paintable.

*mods, please move this to the "How To" section

Nice work Jim!  Never underestimate the creativity of a flatlander.

How sad is it that this seat has to be modded (is that a word?) so that it is usable?

Macneil are you paying attention?  Please for the love of god, go back to the drawing board on this one for next year.  Someone please go to the powers that be at Macneil or through Travis Collier and have them address this.  All they have to do is get there hands on the KHE watanabe seat flip it over, look at the hand hold and somehow marry that design to their seat.  It's not rocket science.

Supplies:
Hack Saw
Plasti-Dip
Masking Tape
Screw Driver
And some time

1. Cut down the seat a little past your liking
(http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p22/djreactor/seat%20mod/pics_000.jpg)

2. Take the 4 screws out formt he seat and remove the cover and hardware
(http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p22/djreactor/seat%20mod/pics_001.jpg)

3. Tape off the inside of the seat so it doesn't drip through "Make sure to tape against the screw holes so the don't get covered in the dip"

4. Flip seat over and tape off area around handle so it makes a little pool above the seat
(http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p22/djreactor/seat%20mod/pics_003.jpg)

5. Make sure you prob up the seat so the dip flows evenly
(http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p22/djreactor/seat%20mod/pics_004.jpg)

6.Fill that bad boy up!!

7. You may need to shake it around to fill in any areas with air bubbles but now we play the waiting game.

I filled mine up to the top of the tape. Once it dries, I plan on smoothing it out with a razorblade and a file.

I'll update this once the thing dries!!

ENJOY!!

i think expanding foam to fill the gaps and then a layer of plasti-dip might be lighter?

Today's progress:
Well after about 14hrs of dry time the plasti-dip was only 1/5 of the way dry. So it seems like filling it with the dip will take forever with the whole process. I was going to do the expanding foam at first but, I wanted to try this first. So instead, what I did was remove the tape from the inside section on the seat and removed the remaining "Still Liquid" plasti-Dip and filled it with the expanding foam.

Now also. I made a foil-bowl :P and poured the plasti-dip in to. I took the rear section of the seat and dipped it into the bowl. I also grabbed a small paint brush and did the this grips section so it would have more of a KHE feel to it.

In the end this will be an overnight process. This thing should finally be done tomorrow!!

I'll keep you posted!

the Mcneil is the lightest pivotal flatland seat to my knowledge...I mean basically it's the only one.  cut up it's lighter. on mine, I took off, just guessing, maybe an ounce. maybe. expandable foam is light as sh*t, so I figure I broke even or lost a couple boogers' worth of weight. it's a silly question, but I'm glad to answer  ^_^
Title: Re: Mcneil seat mods

OK, here's the weight:

340g "as per Flatlandfuel
345g "after modification"

That would be a weight gain of 0.0104 lbs.

Final Product!!!  It's not perfect but it's feels much better than the KHE seat!!

I wouldn't mind trying this again.. It was more of a trial and error process.

Hope this helps everyone!!!

I think if that seat had a rear grip like the 99er, it would be the most perfect seat on the market. Shame it has such a weird feeling to it. I have big hands, so my fingers get jammed up into the bottom. I'm just using it for back wheel stuff so I'm not squatting on a painful plastic seat, but still... for damn near 30 bucks... It should be nice to hold.

but still... for damn near 30 bucks... It should be nice to hold.

if this thread had a motto, that would be it, exactly. it's my hope that somehow by the existance of this conversation, an updated version will be available in the future, geared more to rider input. which I would buy and buy again. for however long I ride.

Mcneil, the people have spoken. we want a slimmer, more comfortable back and shorter nose on your seat in the future.

Mcneil, the people have spoken. we want a slimmer, more comfortable back and shorter nose on your seat in the future.

It doesn't need to be slimmer. It just needs to have rounded grips. What is there now jams your fingers into the bottom of the seat and isn't practical at all. I mean it works for some, but it's not nearly as comfortable as a 99er was.

And yeah, shorter nose. I don't think prostate support is among the primary concerns of most riders.

word. honestly i think colony or macneil should do it up.

seriously make the handle smaller, rounder nicer on the hands. cuz the deep thing is
honestly horrible on hands I have big hands too.. its just not even enjoyable to ride.

Note-havnt ridden it yet. but still i know its gonna.

But anyways somthing soft like the khe seat. and def short front.
like at least shoter like where the bolt is on the seat take that much off.

but im having mine modded;)

so for now ill be content, but like jim said i would buy it till the end of my riding days
if they made it. so SOMEONE MAKE IT. xD

RIDE HARD

I just did these two mods. Both the grip handle and cutting the nose. I was amazed by how much more responsive the bike handled with the new grip. I still need to fill in the back and am thinking of using black permatex silcone as a filler. Hot glue work out really nice on the seat I practice on before doing my colony seat. best seat grip in my opinion is the one on my diamond back seat which is way old
its just hard plastic but is all rounded and smooth you don't need seperate finger holds just a nice area. Of course my opinion is biased because its only my third seat but i've tried the mcneil and its nasty

I cut mine too, plus replaced the old damaged fabric with leather from an old briefcase (because why not..!)

I found that hot glue works better than staples for stretching and mounting the fabric.

I didn't fill the holes,i sanded them down good, and it feels good this way (at the moment,i need a session to check)

I made a small cut with a razor for the allen key insert on top.Looks better without that gray pivotal logo

After so many years and still no company made an improved model of this seat..

After the cut it feels WAY better, like a normal seat for people with normal hands!
