Title: Who remembers Orbit BMX Media?
Post by: letsgo on October 20, 2008, 06:30:03 AM
This was one of the coolest magazines I had seen.  It was like Cream but 10 years earlier.  It was packed with photos of flatland.  Does anyone know who did this mag?  Are they still in the riding scene?  It was from NYC.  Here are a few pages from the Winter 95/96 copy that I have kept.

I totally remember Orbit... the first issue I was lucky enough to find is the same one you got those scans off of. I just recently bought Orbit #0 off of Adam Guild a few months ago! lol
I actually want to get another copy of issue #1, so if anyone has one to sell me, let me know!

Do you know if Adam has any more issue he wants to sell ? I had a few issues but lost them over the years. I found issue 0 on ebay awhile ago.

Firstly, I do apologize for the Thread Necro. But seeing as how when I google Orbit BMX Media this is the first reference that pops up, and that I have information directly relating to questions asked herein, I feel that it's somehow justified.

You see, my name is Laurence Richard Mabie, publisher - photographer - creative editor of Orbit BMX Media. Before I tell you all the story of how I came to find this thread, let me first thank you for remembering and saying such positive things about a project I put so much heart and soul into. After all, BMX Flatland had given me so much in life, I felt I had to give back in only the best way posible.

I recently uploaded a video I had come across, a VHS tape of raw footage from a Levi's commercial stuntwork casting call. The Video's name on YouTube is called "A1R5N1P3R revealed." A good friend of mine, TITANSUSA heard the magazine name I mentioned in my intro, and being a Professional Online Gamer, he of course Googled it =) So today, we're in a chat on PSN, and he tells me about this thread. Reading the comments definitely made my day, and I thank you all, I sacrificed alot and put my heart and soul into publishing a high quality magazine highlighting Flatland and under rated riders. I do believe I was the first to pay respect to Cory Nestazio (I know I just butchered his name, sorry about that).

I am heavily involved in competitive gaming as well, held #1 in Combat for a game called Warhawk, and #1 in Team Deathmatch for a game called Metal Gear Online. Trying to explain different facets of ones life online is often a fruitless venture, full of ye rights and sure sures, I suppose there are lots of liars out there. But this thread has done alot to validate all I've told about my BMX adventures, LOL. How many people claim to have partied with Jay Miron and Dave Mirra, etc, especially with the video games they spawned (I personally can't stand playing video games based on riding, I rather just go out there and ride tbh).

My contact info is:
YouTube.com/A1R5N1P3R
Flickr.com/photos/A1R5N1P3R

You'll find some pix of Orbit BMX Media on Flickr, as well as other Graffiti magazines I've published. I'm actually in a few text books for having started 2 of the first Graffiti magazines (ever). Martial Arts and Fine Art are also areas I've made a mark on, and I'm currently involved a bit more in motorcycles. If there's, any questions you'd like answered regarding Orbit BMX Media, feel free to ask in this thread, and I'll answer as best as I can.

Ye that was me =) Thx for the kind comment and for remembering. First time I did that in public was the AFA Masters in Austin, Texas '87 i think. There was a how-to spread in American Freestyler august 1987, and in Super BMX & Frrestyle (I don't recall the issue). I used to surf down staircases as well, but meh I stopped doing that =( Crazy Carl Silverman of Freestylin' fame took pix of me Surfing down stairs. If anyone knows what happened to him please tell me =/

Adam Guild as well, he was a cool guy, very skilled and down to earth too. If anyone has contact info on him, have him post here. I remember leaving a big 'ol stack of mags with him to sell for himself, glad to see he's done so. That's what Orbit BMX Media was for me, a way to hook up friends.

Loved that story about the Brian Tunney cover shoot.   The closed subway station sketchiness.  Great mag Larry,  you let us crash at your place for one of the X-trials comps in New York,  thanks!

Thx alot Louis, Adam is cool people, NYC got really crazy from '97-'02 sucks we lost contact.

Brandon Fenton, lol sry about mislabeling pix. With all the organization, and the pix that went into my issues, it's a wonder I didn't get more wrong =( Good to see you here tho! Awesome to see people still involved.

Wookie, that pad was really sketchy. Shame you weren't around for the duplex in Brooklyn. But ye, I remembering having like 15 people sleeping over at once >_< was happy to do so. The cover of OrbitBMXmedia#1 was fun to shoot, what I remember most was how stoaked everyone was to be where we were. You should've seen everyones face when I explained what we were about to do, lol. So worth it. While we were waiting for a train to pass, they were buggin on what was at one time a busy station. Fun times indeed.

The only shame is that people didn't get to see OrbitBMXmedia#2 but oh well.

LARRY!!!! Zack Yankush aka Catfish here. Orbit was one of the best. Almost as good as watching Larry crank top speed into Manhattan traffic in a surfer. So many good times with that dude.

Big ups Larry.

Brian Tunney of New Jersey was on the cover of OrbitBMXmedia#1 - Miron had the centerfold tho.

BTW - Zack, do you remember the rides we would get together in NYC, 300 strong? No I'm not talking about that critical mass garbage, I'm talkin' 100% BMX rogueness.

Larry!!!!!!! Wow dude what are you up to? Still in the NYC?

I was reading this thread on here about how uncool flat was BITD and I just wanted to say that coming from a guy who experinced a lot of it first hand that the 90's flat scence was a tight knit community of friends who rode together partied together and helped one another get from contest to contest. Because we were not spinning tricks a hundred miles an hour in a smalll area shouldnt take away from the fact that times were good. Its a shame that a bunch of people who werent even there to experience most of it can come on line and attempt to  butcher that great era..Im sure Larry you can attest to what im saying..

Much props to Cory Fester for his thoughts and opinions about that situation...

Larry...keep in touch.. hit me up on facebook  if your on..

Adamguild, been awhile, hope all is well.

Hmm. Flatland for me has always been a spiritual thing, funny considering I'm a native NewYorker and concrete is my soil. To me, Second Avenue during rush hour traffic is as much a river as the Colorado during spring melt. While most flatlanders kept to lots and garages, I prefered to hold onto MTA Buses while Surfing, Barrides at 35 miles an hour, I was more of a coaster. Though I did dig brakelss in the rain. So arguements amoungst riders never mattered to me, my arguement was always with life and death, jumping across the gap at 61str Train Station, or doing drop ins off elevated subway cars just to terrify commuters, and to let them know they live in my city. Graffiti fit this mindset well.

My advice to anyone regarding what could be called Flatland, is to not worry about what is said, concentrate on what is done. Mainstream riders, I'm sure, are completely unaware of the invitationals that were held, without cameras, just to keep the artform alive. If, when in the grasshopper and miami hopper stages of the artform, we worried what others thought of us, the craft wouldn't have become what it is today.

Truly harnessing and manipulating the power of the wheel is an artform. Some call it Street, others Dirt, Ramp, Rogue or Flat, I just Ride and adapt to my environment. Now you have me staring at my bike...

Instead of riders criticizing each other, the focus should be turned toward those who hype the sport beyond it's bursting limit, compromizing it's image and eventually driving it underground again. What I attempted to do with OrbitBMXmedia was put a content rich, heterosexual experience in riders hands. I do believe OrbitBMXmedia was just sexy enough, just edgy enough to maintain what could of been a balanced community, because as riders, in life we strive for such balance. Instead of supporting Orbit, the media machine took what they saw and gave you all Tread, and BMXXX. It was around this time that I started to back up a bit and shield my ideas. I won't say that I'm to be counted out, just I'm waiting for technology to allow me the venue to launch my next project, and we're almost there.

A1R5N1P3R explained (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VsolwgeLh4#normal)

A video I uploaded to YouTube, detailing some of my personal publishing history, including Orbit BMX media. This topic isn't irrelevant just yet, there is a bit more to come, but nothing I can confirm at this time. If you are a fan of Orbit BMX media, it's great news. Enjoy this short vid for now though.

Also, some stuntwork I did a while back:

The video I descibed in my initial post on page one:

Larry?  I assume they call you ^ Larry?

Hey, just wanted to let you know that I was there at the 87 Masters Series in Austin when you busted out that Surfer Nose Wheelie.  By far the coolest, hardest trick up to that point.  Amazing.  It's still hard for me to fathom.

Oh, and Adam traded me a few issues of Orbit for a frame.  He wants to start riding again, but is slowly plotting his "revenge".  Anyway, I never saw Orbit when you first put them out, but I got to see some now, and it is/was an amazing publication.  Great work.

Oh, and thanks for posting these videos.  Awesome.  Love it.

This thread is far from dead, and this post is right on topic.

I can't recall which email was associated with my global-flat account (A1R5N1P3R), so I made a new one. At any rate, after much procrastination, I finally began posting copies of OrbitBMXmedia on eBay. Working on creating an Amazon author profile, until then eBay is the way to get your hands on this piece of BMX history.

Also, if there's a store portion of this forum, let me know. I don't have an endless supply, so...

I think it's very cool that people remember Orbit, and other zines and videos that served as stepping stones.

Is it my imagination, or was Tread Magazine a direct result of Orbit? and was OrbitBMXmedia responsible for the flurry of "orbit" named products?
