Title: Aging riders
Post by: Dion on August 19, 2008, 04:00:20 PM
I was talking to an older guy (like in his 50's) and we were chatting about BMX. I told him about my age and wondered how long I'll be able to ride for. His response was something to the effect of:

Modern BMX is relatively a young sport compared to others. Take surfing... or even skating... for example. You see a bunch of old guys in their 50's and 60's still surfing... I'd imagine that someday BMX can get to that level and I wouldn't be suprised to see guys BMX'ing all the way into their 50's.

IMO, BMX and skating are MUCH more abusive than surfing, but do you think in the next 10-20 years we may see guys in this age group still riding? Or do you think that BMX is far too abusive on the body, forcing people to quit?

I see a lot of old guys MTN biking and skiing... but again, their crashes are far less than in BMX. I think that injury will stop people from really riding. But in the future, I also think it will be more comman to see guys in their 50's riding around BMX bikes and not doing many tricks (due to injury). Even I am WAY toned down in the street department just because I don't have the nerves I used to and I don't want to disable myself.

What do you think?

Yes, people will still be riding into their 50s.  What will be interesting is to see how skills decline.  I personally have only seen skills decline because people lose interest and/or stop practicing, not because of aging itself.

Pete Brandt is 38+. I'd like to see a 14 year old in better shape than him.

I think as long as your joints are good you could ride flatland into your 60's personally. It all depends on how well of shape your body is. Look at all the older folks who still jog. Back and joint problems I think is what would hinder a person. But that goes into any aspect of physical work.

Skating I don't think so.. I used to skate street...the impact on your joints is horrid..there is no give to polyurethane wheels and a wooden board to land. I found myself even as a teenager hurting more from skating than BMX ever.

Street riding and park, etc BMX. I don't see those guys riding as long as flat though.

I'm 35 and I swear physically I am not any different than when I rode when I was 15... I swear.

Just my 2 cents.

The Hawk is going to be 41, and still skateboarding. Older riders tone down the aggression but then you have the exceptions who will and can still pull some heavy tricks. Tony Alva is catching up to 50's, I think he might be 50 or 51. He still curves pools. Jay Miron does yoga and rides flatland, he will most likely still keep riding in his 40s and onwards. There seems to be a good number of Flatlanders in their late 30s still kicking it despite tendon break down. You all know who they are. Cheers to RadDad!

As a whole actions sports riders are getting a taste of the coming of age. Riders will always have the love for these sports since its ingrained in the blood. I know I can't ride skateboarding anymore, mind you I still try and taught little kids a few weeks ago. You'll never see me going down hill unless I drastically alter my body, but can do it if I went back to a strict training. I can't wait to get a road bike, I still can hold up riding k's, and anything that is a test in the endurance. Considering I'm the same age as hawk, I'm doing pretty good despite the recent chubbs around the hips, and such...moderation is the key and not being anal in ones outlook helps. Keeping the body active is important, people don't even walk anymore...N

Jose Yanez, who originated the backflip on a bmx bike, is 50 years old now and still dirt jumping and doing flips. Then you have people like Rick Moliterno, Kevin Jones and Dennis McCoy who are well into their 40s and riding better than ever.

As long as the body's willing and able, we should keep with it...  Let's face it, we're al young at heart, and will keep going as long as reasonably possible.  I turn 39 in a few weeks, and have more passion and comittment for riding now than ever before.  A while back, I thought I'd quit at 40, but no way is that going to happen...

The only thing that holds me back is time - the lack of it - to be able to ride more... I know that Dion and a lot of the other older guys have the same 'problem', but hey, we wouldn't be on here if we didn't love it!

What was it Tom Waits said about loving 'til the wheels fell off?  Makes me smile - and keeps me rolling!

I think we are the first generation of people to keep doing things and not let age or people that say "Are you not a little to old to be doing that sort of thing". Get our way.

Also I think flatland might be suited to the slightly older person like myself. The falls or spills are not so heavy, not like vert ,street or dirt. Also I dont think I would have had the patience's or focus when I was younger.

Surfing, skating and riding are all abusive if you push yourself too far, too fast. I think an aging flatlander with a lifetime of riding under his belt could still session. have some fun. Maybe not progress anymore, but still bustin tricks.
Maybe because the sport of flatland is so young we haven't got 50 year olds yet. So we have to wait to become them.

I am glad to hear you guys talk about age. I was skeptical about starting back up at the age of 33. My wife thought I was crazy and some of my neighbors gave me some greif. Now that I am relearning some tricks they have changed their minds and think its cool. Some of my old riding buddies are also buying bikes after I took the first step. It has been at times a little hard on my body, but it gets easier as time goes by. I cant think of a better way to get a good workout. ;D

I turned 31 this year, and only took up Flat from age 28.  Part of me is disappointed I didn't take it up from my teens, but another part of me is satisfied that those tricks that always impressed me when I started, that seemed almost impossible, I can already do  :)
There are about a handfull of trick that I still wanna do, and are currently working on, and if I can them all by the time I'm 40, then I'm a happy man.    I'll never be pro, but I love each and every session of riding, and will continue to do it for the enjoyment of it, well into my 40's and hopefully 50's.
The only downside to riding at an older age, is that recovery takes longer than it did in my teens.  I'm pretty fit, and in great shape for my age, so it's not a struggle to ride a 3-4 hour session.
Just look at Mark Dandridge, a.k.a. Rad Dad.  Bustin decades and half-hikers at a ripe 'ol age.  lol   Sorry Mark.  :)

Pete B. and i was talking about how long he was going to ride competition
wise last night as i am staying at his house at the moment as i was on the
Central Coast staying with another pro flatlander but im in Fresno now baking
my ass off in the Central Valley heat!

anyways, there is no limit as long as you are able to ride and progress to an
point you still enjoy riding and can ride and im 47 years old and still ride tho
i am limited to riding because of health issues..i still ride!

i think Dion you need to shut the fook up and just go ride dude and you
know i speak straight out and wont hold my words back for anyone and
as long as you enjoy riding and can progress then go ride and dont worry
about how much longer yopu are going to ride for.

just watched some olympic round up stuff and thers a few people in ther 40s winning medals, a 41yr old woman took 2 silvers in swimming, and some argentinian cyclist in the team was 43 and won gold, and a 49 yr old runner doing well,
so if the body and mind are still willing then u should be fine, just remember to warm up first

Pete is FIT he'll be riding until he absolutely can't. And seeing a guy 3 years older than me riding like a 14 year old busting out combos like these 20 year olds do...well it was quite an inspiration to be honest.

Mutt,

Let me clarify. I'm not complaining... this is a honest to goodness question and I actually look forward to seeing older riders in the future like surfing has. I'm also curious to see if others think there will be more and more 50 year olds riding BMX bikes in the future. I think it's cool that you're still so involved in the sport and was jazzed to re-connect with you. I'm not worried about how much longer I'm going to ride for - interesting that you read into my thread that way.

BTW, that was a nice choice of words toward:

1) A guy who rides daily (me), and pretty much DOES STFU and rides (just got back from a 3 hour solo session)

2) The same guy who thought of YOU first when I got back into it (that's how much I respect your passion for the sport) - knowing you're the go-to guy to re-connect with old friends.

3) The same guy who looks forward to riding with you everytime and drive my ass 50 miles + to do so. Not because of your riding skills, but because I like you as a friend.

You're always complaining about people talking sh*t... check your own words, buddy. I'm your  friend, and friends don't tell friends to STFU unless there's blows to be thrown or unless they want to make enemies.

I like you... please don't create a situation that would lend me toward not liking you.

I'll see you in Manteca.

*sorry for the thread jack, guys. Forum drama is for kids - so that will be the last of that kind of stuff coming from me.

Hey, as far as I know there are no 50 year old riders. So why is it a bad question to ask? No one really knows the answer. Can someone ride into their 50's? Yes. Is it likely? That is the question. No one knows how difficult flatland will be for a middle age guy. I supect it will be back and knee problems that plaque us. I remember it was a big deal that Brian Scura was in his thirty years ago. Now we have guys including myself who are creeping on 40. Who knows.

My two cents.  I'm 35 and ride, and my Dad also is know to do a little stuff too like infinity rolls, peg hops, and such, and he is 67.  He does it just because he likes it, and isn't that the point?  What level you ride at doesn't matter as long as you have fun.

36 and will continue to ride no matter what.  Personally I need to get in better shape (lose weight) and making the effort to work out to lose weight and in essence improve my body for riding.  That is the hard thing for me.  Going out and riding is easy.  Going to bang out pushups, pull ups and crunches is hard.  I ride my Street bike for my day job so my cardio is getting better all the time.  I don't have any nagging injuries so I am ok there.  To me the biggest obstacle is time.  I need more time to do everything I want to do.

I think this is an interesting topic as well.

A lot of non-riders out there seem to have a stigma against seeing an adult on a BMX bike. I sometimes get asked by acquintances if I've given up "that little kids' hobby" yet.

To me, adults riding BMX bikes should be no different than adults playing basketball at the gym or tossing a football in the park. Maybe someday BMX will be accpeted as a sport for all ages, but I don't think we've reached that point yet.

I will be 38 on 8/24 and I can honestly say that I have beaten the crap out of myself street riding in the last 3 years. My body is just tore the phuck up. I honestly think that my hardcore riding days are done, definatly for this year.

Damn this gal needs some heavy bass and WUUU. Its GrindHouse so kick it, Beat it, Riders Only! Don't like it, stick'em back to soccer and hockey!

You know what else is annoying, when they ask if I have kids....HELL NO! Do I look like a baby pusher! Now don't get me wrong I love kids. I always say YES, I have many, a community load I even put up with letting them listen their EMO music during events...just letting off some jive.

Yeah,  I think I would like to be the Yoda of flatland. Limping out to my bike and barely able to peddle and then getting a little warm and busting out my McCircles. I'll do this in my 60's but I doubt it in my 70's. You break a hip at that age and you die shortly after. I'd rather die another way as much as I do enjoy flatland. Hopefully we'll ride out as long as possible...

36 in November.  A few injuries that required surgery over the years.  I can't ride as long or as often as I used to.  But that is because there is more to my life than JUST flatland.  Family, home, and work prevent me from riding not age.  Still get out a few times a week and usually have fairly intense solo sessions for 3 hours max before hamstrings start cramping/stiffening up and I can't balance as well so I call it a day.  Have plans to make a spot to ride in the next year or two at my house so it will be easier to go out and ride everyday for an hour or two.  No end in sight!

Im not very old but yea Im not growing younger eh..I wish I would've started with BMXing way earlier than I actually did. I am more concerned about getting hurt or even disabled now when Im a little older and a bit wiser, haha..Thats why I never really got into street or vert, I simply dont have the guts for it. Same goes for skating, I want to get started but it feels like I'll just hurt myself..

I definatly think someone thats old can do whatever as long as he/she has got the will. My dad's some 60 now I think and he jogs and skiis alot. So I definatly hope I'll manage to ride even when I get older..

Man...you motivated me...this is true flatland spirit

Every day i go riding and see 50 years old man who ride a bike (not bmx). He has a good, realy good body shape and don`t care about people who think :"hah, old man...What are you doing, go home and relax".

I think if you will ride every day you would have a good  body shape with a power to ride even in 50 years. In 50 you can looks like 37-45 years old man, i try to believe in it... Because the tango dancers does :)

Ride if yours body can, even if you are an oldman! :) Ofcourse if you want.

Good words, thanks! But i think that you can be a pro level rider. I`m sure! Flatland  don`t need a strong body or teenager body (it can be strong to ), just a balance and practice...

I'm 37, and ride, but not hardcore. It's cool. I ride less than I used to, but that's a matter of 'drive' not age. I also ride my road bike a lot.

Been to the last two York jams, and there were more old schoolers there than young riders!  A few guys were there with their dam kids riding too!

It seems reasonable to ride at 50 if the rider lives healthy. Who's the oldest known flat rider by the way? Mutt?

that's awesome Mutt. big props. older riders know stuff.

has anyone else heard of this Buddhist Monk that rides? meh. it may be a flatland myth, I don't know, but I heard a story one time of him showing up at a comp and jamming on the sidelines. They said he was at least 50 then.  it's probably been 4 years since I heard it told.

That's cool man..hold an Oldies But Goldies Jam. Maybe now is the time to hold one of these jams. There seems to be solid number of riders in their late 30's and a few hitting early 40's.

the weirdest thing about a thread like this is that it's a question that can't really be answered. bmx is still young and know one knows how long they'll be riding other than saying they will until they can no longer do so. there was this great interview with Scott Towne in an old issue of Dig where he said "No one knew that you could be an adult and ride. Back in the older magazines, if someone was 25 and still riding, it was a huge deal." Dennis McCoy is still making finals in vert and he's 41. Dennis can't ride flat that much anymore because of his wrists but he's adapted and still rides.

if you love riding then it shouldn't be a question that you're in it for a good, long while. just help those younger than you get in and stick with it the best of your ability.

the only problem i see as age is passing is wrists and knees.
i have problem in both.
i am 26 and i ride for 11 years now.almost daily if you except some surgery and other stuff.
i rode street also for 1-2 years when i started.
i think you can get  many problem in your knees from flatland as years passing.
i just changed my handlebar and went from one with 1.5 degree backsweep to 5 degree.
i also lowered it and cut it much smaller, with that way i can control my bike much easier but in almost every session my wrists feeling pain now.
i dont know if it is from the tricks i do or from the handlebar but if i dont do something fast it might cause my even serious problem in the feature.
and yeah if you do just rolling tricks i dont see a problem as years passing
if you do tailwhips, decades, turbine tricks you might hurt easily.
shoulders can also get hurt as years passing.

i start my fall quarter in University on Wednesday and
i just figured out my weekly schedule for classes, studying,
university work and i am going to be able to ride like 4-5 times
a week and now that we have 4-5 flat riders at the spot during
the week then ill be going almost no where in travel time during
the week. The only time are the weekend Saturday sessions at the BBT,
VALLEY and SAN JOSE, that i will be traveling and Sunday, we usually
have a session at THE SPOT in Danville which is 5 minutes from the
house.

i dont think anyone my age does as much riding as i do plus everything
else i do and I AM PROBABLY THE OLDEST FULL TIME FLATLANDER out
there right now!

My plan is to Retire in about 30 more years when I am 70. I think by that time I will reduce my riding to 2 wheels but ride the occasional wheelie down the street!!

Keep on Riding!

old people rule! ;D
ill be 35 in December but my body feels like its 55+.
inside, i feel like a teen. ^_^ :P
im gonna ride til body parts start falling off or stop working. i just cant help it.
a few DRs told me i shouldnt ride cuz of my back being jacked-im riding again anyway.
my ankle was about the size and shape of Texas this past Sat at the BKNY Jam, but i still rode a little anyway and jacked the ankle twice as bad as before.
bad lungs, bad catchers knees, wrists.
everytime i get on my bike i sorta get that magical happy feeling like when i was a little kid and still believed in Santa Claus and Easter Bunny and sat up all nite waiting for them to show up...anyone remember that feeling?! this helps me thru any pain i might be feeling when i go out.
riding makes me feel good. when i was jacked up and couldnt ride for those years, i got so depressed and almost gave up on life a few times. getting back on the bike helped get me back on track again and hard alcohol bottles out of my hands. still love  tho! ;)
bmx is in my blood...rider 4 life.
props to all u old cats gettin back on bikes again and also to the ones who never put the bikes away after all these years!
my hope is that the kids startin out will find the same love weve found on our bikes, and not just do it cuz they saw it on tv or You Tube or to try and fit in with their friends...let them love it just cuz they fkn love it.
RIDE ON!

I'm 36 and I ride.  I have a flat bike, and a f*ck around/street bike.   I competed during the AFA Masters days, and once as a pro.  Im just as capeable now, as I was when I was 16, but I work out a lot and stay in good shape.
