Title: Northcoast Flatland Battle, Wheelnuts Jam, Harlee Cup
Post by: Mr News Bot on May 07, 2008, 02:15:19 PM
Global-flat team member Balint Gabor aka Spix wrote a article about the Harlee Cup V. Check it out: Harlee Cup V.

Andy Wood is organizing the Wheelnuts Jam in the UK: "Birmingham Wheels Park, host of the 1983 European BMX Champs has seen its fair share of BMX history over the past 3 decades.  Sadly the curtain may be about to close on the legendary venue as the developers move in.  Wheelnuts Jam is a dirt comp and flatland jam which aims to rekindle the spirit of the bike park as it was when they had anything up to a thousand riders turning up to race meets. The flatland is on a concrete roller hockey rink.  There will be DJs, a merch and repairs stand, refreshments and prizes."

Last but not least Brian Rybak informed us about the Northcoast Flatland Battle which will take place on May 24th in Cleveland, Ohio, USA.

Sorry Jesse, we had it planned out months ago.  Then moved the location indoors to an upscale mall in downtown with balconies on both sides of the contest area!  I had to make the call on later announcement or possible rain-out.  We plan on making this an annual event so I'll get the word out early next time.

Keep an eye out for additional sponsors and updates on pre-jam, afterparty and the like.  Thanks.

Could this be the key to getting cleveland flatland organized again?
I sure hope so.... seems I missed out on the huge scene.... when I first started riding, the first time I went to chenga, there were every friday flatland jams.... There must have been 20 riders back then...
That would be awesome if this were an anual thing....

Thats not too bad of a drive really.... I-90 is a straight shot there...
And there really doesn't seem to be too many events within decent driving distance lined up for the summer either... I wouldn't miss it if your within driving distance!

this will be a great event..and alot of great people have taken time away from thier families and busy yet hectik schedules to help make this happen... like rybak had mentioned..it was better to find this upscale indoor mall area to have the comp then it would have been to cancel at last minute due to an outside venue and allways changing conditions in the midwest in may.... and also this gives rybak more time to spend on other things than watching the weather channel everyday...lol...thanks again to everyone that has helped out...and plans to help out in anyway...thanks again..and hope to see all of you there...tim   ...p.s..... if you need more info..head over to the website ...the direct link is in the events section...thanks.

Just spoke with Scott Powell about a Pre-Jam @ Chenga II the night before.  He was down with that,  have to come up with some fun and games for that too.

Trying to work out a better deal for hotels if anyone is interested in that route.  I currently have a nice one for like $69 a night right by the airport which is by chenga II.  But still working on something cheaper.

This sounds like a fun contest.  I have been to the venue where the contest is going to be, and it should be awesome.  In fact, I can't believe that they are going to let us ride in there.

I don't think that there are going to be many contests this summer in the US if any, so this should be an event to go to... especially if we can make it an annual event.  Let's show our commitment to flatland events in the US and get a good turn out.

There should also be some big pros there.  I just got off the phone with a few who plan on going too.

See you there.

Matt

thanks matt for all your help and pushing flatland forward in the right direction in the u.s.a. ....like matt had mentioned...i cant believe we will be able to ride there as well... hope alot of you make it...because yes...there are not very many comps in the states...and hopefully this year people take notice and help or push more flatland events like this..and voo doo in the following years just like scott .terry.and brian are...now only if i could change the rain...lol...tim

Yes, the venue is awesome!
This is a really good opportunity to get some serious flatland exposure... The galeria is almost always ass-packed full of people... I can't think of any american contests that have been in a crowded mall environment since I've been riding... I've only seen videos of stuff like that in japan.

I have confirmation from Matt, Terry Adams, Steph Cerra, and Justin Miller so far... with a dozen others in the works.  Also, the AM class prize sponsors are adding up.  Drumming up some local media spots to get more people out to watch.  I'll keep you posted.

I am dragging chris out of seclusion for this one too but I don't know if he will ride yet.  There should be a pretty good turnout for such short notice.  Look at how indy jam blew up and they started out very small the first year.  With planning this year may be great and if it goes annual it may get huge!

short notice?? you have 2 weeks what are you guys complaining about!

Just kidding.  I completely understand and appreciate everybody that has changed their schedules, scraped together a couple bucks for gas$$ called their buddies, emailed some locals for a place to crash and all that.  Additional sponsors that have stepped up that didn't know anything about it when I called or sent an email.  Doing my best to get some extra media exposure not only for more spectators at the event but to get the pros a few opportunities to get coverage they can show their sponsors.  Legends Chris Young and Dave Schaefer will be just a few of the judges.  Thanks again for all the support so far guys.  See you soon.

Yep, two weeks!  This week is Cleveland bicycle week all sorts of bike to work rides, bike advocacy stuff,  a bike to the movies at the Natural History Museum which I got a spot for Elusion to play in this big screen theatre.  Want to make sure all the local comp print flyers get done and out this week.  Apparently there is some big video-game tournament in Cleveland the same weekend too.  Thanks for the props Scott, your advice was a huge help.

I have Elusion playing at Bike to the Movies tonight at the Museum of Natural History.  Prime the cyclists in the area abit for the event.  Some print flyers will be at the event.  Working on a few other tie-ins this week.

Got to ride today for a bit too.  First time in a couple weeks!! My riding time has turning into promotion time.  Felt good to get out for a few hours.  Cops showed up at the park I ride at to investigate some guy "trying to mess with some underage girls".  I steered clear of the whole thing and didn't get kicked out nice.

I'll keep you guys posted.

I have been passing out tons of flyers for the event!  I think we will draw a nice size crowd of bmxers, bike messengers, mtn and roadies, as well as a hipster coffee shop kids.  That's just from the pool of people I have contact with.  I have no idea what the morning TV show will draw in?  Am prizes still rolling in.  If any competitors want to send me a quick bio that we can use during the comp it may make day of registration a little quicker.  I'm working on a short form for riders to fill out to inform the crowd about the riders.  AMs too!

I've promoted the hell out of the contest to all my clients, friends, friends of friends, and random strangers at the bar... Do you know if sirkins shop has fliers yet? I forgot to call and see if they have them... my friend at tareasa's pizza said he'll hand out fliers with the pizzas if I can get him some...
Hook it up!

See everyone next week!

More prizes showed up today.  Some Revenge T's, Grips and kevlar beaded 1.95 tires.  Big thanks to Sean McKinney for the hookup.  I know how hard it is for small companies to give out product and I really appreciate the support.  RideBMX sent out some T's and a few DVD's, probably give them out to the spectators since their mostly street stuff.

DJ and sound system is taken care of and should be dialed.  Confirmed the Friday Fox 8 morning show TV spot 7:45 Steph C and myself with the host.  1,000 flyers distributed to bikeshops, cool bar and coffee shops and record shops in the area.  Web flyer all over regional bicycle sites.  Stoked!

I will have a form for the competitors to fill out at registration with just facts about themselves and music preferences for their runs.

Friday night pre-jam at Chenga 2 should be a blast too.

Thank you Brian for the hard work you've put in.  This only came to my attention only two days ago (my fault for not realizing how close Cleveland is), but I'm making sure I'm there just to support your efforts and flatland.

Got another box of Am prizes today.  From QBP, the US distributor of KHE.  Swiss miss bars, some Alchemy and Jessup pegs.  Stimulator pedals and a some other cool items.

We're looking to come in on Friday for the jam...just haven't been able to find any info regarding what time it takes place yet...anyone know?  Oh, and address could be helpful too for all the directions I'm going to be printing off tomorrow.  Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

The Friday pre-jam is at Chenga 2.  Guys will be coming into town all day so its pretty loose as far as start time.  Basically, anytime from 4pm til 10 or later depending on who is working at Chenga that night.

chenga.cc  is their website.
14700 snow road | brookpark, oh 44142  is the address.
It's pretty close to Cleveland Hopkins Airport if that helps at all.  PM me if you need any more info for Friday or Saturday.  Leave me a cell # if you can.
Oh and we'll have some directions to the afterparty at the comp Sat.
Thanks.

Awesome.
The format for the AM qualifying will be one minute and a half run.  Finals will be the same time with a last trick option.

Pros.
1 two and a half minute qualifying run.  Finals top 8 seeded in brackets for one on one battles.
Battles will consist of 2 one and a half minute runs with a last trick option at the end of your second run.

time limits will be enforced during the battles to ensure that the competitors get equal time.

Steph Cerra just rolled into town.  He's doing the Fox 8 local morning show with me tomorrow.

Dane Beardsley registered today.  Andy Cooper is coming too, I don't think I mentioned that before.  Also, Dave Petrin and Ron Monis are coming out with Matt Wilhelm.  Not all the guys will make the Chenga Jam tomorrow but I think there will still be alot of guys there.  Can't wait.

He let me ride it for a few... I was actually very impressed with how that bike rode... If I needed a frame, I would most certainly put that at the top of my consideration list...
People may fuss cause its like 5lbs, but the frame felt real solid, and rode really good... the way matt had his bike setup, you couldn't even tell it was a 5lb frame..

Thanks to everyone who organized, supported, and participated in the comp.  I had a lot of fun hanging out and riding with everyone.  Although the turnout may not have been extra large, there was a lot of good riding.

Between getting to see Terry Adams pull his first whopper ever to some of the Am guys like Prasheel and Alex Poirer throw down there was a lot of good stuff going on in both classes.

If this contest happens again it should be one that you go.
